Harley's phone was ringing. She hurried from the shower to answer, cursing as shampoo suds got in her eyes. She blinked through the burn and found the small cell phone and flipped it open.
"Hello?"
"Hey doc, I got your message."
Her heart was beating fast and she was out of breath from the run. It had worked, he called her. She felt almost queasy with her excitement, like back when she did gymnastics and she was about to perform.
"It's good to hear your voice, Mr. J. I missed you."
"Well, what can I say? I'm a hell of a guy."
She couldn't help but smile. He didn't seem too angry with her and he called, that was a good sign.
"Why the, uh, love note?"
She smiled at the words, "I needed to see you. I had to break up with Bruce, seems he was too in love with some girl."
She heard him growl, lightly. "Well, that's disappointing, but what can you do?"
She knew he would understand. "Can I come see you?"
He was silent, and Harley started to worry for a second. Then he said the best thing she'd ever heard. "Why not?"
She held in the squeal that tried to escape her.
"I'll text you the place, meet me there in an hour." he hung up.
Harley tossed the phone on the bed and hurried back to finish her shower. She had to get ready for her date. She rinsed the shampoo out and slathered on conditioner as she shaved her legs. There was no telling what Joker would want to do so she decided to be prepared. She giggled at the dirty thoughts moving through her head. She would be patient with him, it would be horrible to scare him off after all she had done for him.
Once she was all clean, she dried off and got dressed. She looked at her reflection, she really hated the new hair color, but had little choice while everyone was looking for her. She decided to just pull it up into a ponytail and worry about it later. She did her make up and slid on a pair of sneakers.
She checked the phone and smiled at the address. It was in the Narrows. She looked at the time, she had a half hour to get there.
Bruce decided to call the number for Joker. If Tessa didn't want to talk to him that was fine, Batman would call Joker.
The phone rang, and rang, and rang. Bruce was about to hang up when he heard the line connect.
"Hel-lo."
"Is Tessa okay?"
"Why yes, it's good to hear from you too."
"Is she okay?"
He heard Joker let out an exaggerated sigh, "Here ask her yourself."
Bruce hadn't expected that response.
"Hello?"
She was fine, she sounded good. "Tessa? Are you and the baby okay?"
"Why wouldn't we be?"
Bruce knew it was a loaded question, but he was beyond caring about her being upset with him. This would be the last time he bothered.
"Tessa, listen please, I am just checking on you two. If you tell me straight up, that you are both fine, I will quit bugging you. I will respect what we talked about before an I will stay away."
He heard her take a deep breath and the let out a sigh. "We are fine, all Three of us."
Bruce felt his body relax slightly. "Good. That's ….good." He took a deep breath. "I will find Harley, and she will be locked up for a long time Tessa. If you would have told me the entire truth, I might have been able to stop all of this before anyone got hurt."
"Its not your problem to solve."
Bruce gripped his phone hard, releasing it before he did any damage to it. Why was she so frustrating?
"Regardless, I will catch her."
The next word made chills run up his spine. "Not if we find her first." then he heard dial tone.
He looked down at his phone, shocked by the sound of Tessa's voice. She was dead serious. Were they actively looking for Harley? The two of them together? The better question was what would Tessa do if they found her?
Surely Joker hadn't pushed her past that point of morality. He dialed Lucius, hoping he would be able to stop them before Tessa was lost.
"Bruce, it's kind of late for business."
"I need to trace a cell number, and keep an eye on it. Use whatever resources we have to try to get a location."
"That is illegal. I did it before because of the baby. That was it."
"It's Joker, I have a cell number that he was using, I am hoping to stop him before anyone else gets hurt."
Bruce could probably figure it all out on his own, but it would cost him precious time. "Fine, I will head back into the office, but Bruce, I expect a raise when this is over."
Bruce laughed "Name it, it's yours, I will text you the number."
He knew he could count on Lucius. He sent him the number and waited. It took nearly a half hour before he heard anything back.
"Bruce, you are in luck, the number is active and on the move. It looks like its headed towards the Narrows, but I wont know for sure until it stops. If I get a location, I will let you know immediately."
"You are a life saver."
Bruce left to get into his Batman get up. This would be his chance to get either Harley out of the way, if that's who they were after, or to get Joker out of the way. Tessa would hate him, but Bruce could live with that. He had no choice.
Once he was fully suited up, he headed down to his private, locked garage and got on his bike. He had made sure to have the super strong tranquilizers on hand. He waited on the address. It had taken another twenty five minutes when Lucius sent him a pinned location.
It was on the edge of the Narrows. Bruce didn't know the area well, but he would figure it out. He sped off into the dark, hoping he would be somewhat successful.
