Chapter 12

The sky was grey as they continued their journey. They managed to purchase an oxen for the Princesses to sit on while the boys travelled on foot behind Wes. All of them were looking down as they entered the mountain pass.

Dora appeared from Wes's saddle bag and asked with a smile, "Isn't a great day?"

Wes said nothing and continued to look down. He moved ahead and stopped next to Danny. They both looked at each other, but said nothing and continued on. A wall divided them each.

Dora continued to smile as she said to Wes, "I see Pretty Boy isn't talking to you and you're not talking to Pretty boy."

Wes looked at Dora, still not smiling. Dora then offered, "Well you know, you can always talk to me."

Wes however said nothing and turned his head back around. Dora at first was taken back but then looked on the bright side of things, "Well….just wait till Wes finds out what I've done for him. Then that frown will turn upside down."

Cujo barked angrily at Dora, which Dora immediately got angry and said, "Snap dragon?! Just for that, I'm not talking to you!"

Cujo huffed and crossed his ears over his eyes, showing he wasn't talking to Dora either. The Princesses stopped the oxen, which caused Sam to stop.

All of them felt guilty for what happened in the village, causing the engagement between Wes and Danny to be broken. Valerie was the first to speak, "We're sorry for what we did Wes."

"You inspired us to follow our hearts, and we repaid you by ruining your relationship with the General." Paulina then said, feeling really guilty since it was her letter that Danny found.

Wes shook his head and said, "No. You girls just opened my eyes to how broken it was."

Wes gave them a small sad smile as he said, "I'm indebted to you girls."

Paulina placed her hand on Wes's for comfort, showing that they were there for him during this time. They caught up with Danny and the other boys. Wes fell behind the back while the boys walked side by side with the girls on the oxen.

"Keep a sharp eye. This is Bandit Country." Danny ordered them all.

Tucker then looked at Valerie and then smiled as he thought of a way to speak to them, without directly speaking to them.

"I sure wish we could talk to the Princesses Dash." Tucker said loudly for them to hear.

Dash was about to remind him of the rules Danny had ordered them to follow, but he looked at the girls and then realised what Tucker was doing and followed along, which caught the girls' attention.

"Oh yes Tuck! I also wish we could talk to them, but as you know orders are orders." Dash said.

"Yes, but if I could talk to them, do you know what I would say?" Tucker continued.

"No Tucker. What would you say if you could talk to them?" Dash asked, continuing.

"I'd tell Valerie that she's the prettiest, funniest and the most extraordinary girl I've ever met." Tucker answered, making Valerie smile warmly at him.

"I would tell Princess Star, that she's not only the kindest girl I have ever met, but she is also like fresh ginger on the rice bowl of my life." Kwan then spoke. Star smiled warmly and giggled while blushing.

"And I would tell Paulina that she is one right babe." Dash said and then winked at her, which caused her to blush and fanning herself with her fan.

Danny looked back and realised that they were in love. He pulled out and looked at the Yang necklace that belonged to Wes's father and remembered what he had taught them, which differences can make you stronger. He began to think that maybe Wes was right. Maybe, no-one should be forced to marry someone they don't love?

In his heart, he still loved Wes no matter what but now, he felt like he made a huge mistake and couldn't bring himself to tell him.

Wes looked down at his necklace. Dora came out and asked him, "Wes, are you okay?"

"My father said before we left, differences can make you stronger." Wes said, showing his sadness. "He didn't realise that Danny and I were just too different."

Dora suddenly began to feel guilty but didn't want to show it. She climbed up the front at Wes came to a stop and said, "Well….you know you always got me. The old team? Right?"

Wes gave her a small smile and said, "Yeah. You're always looking out for me Dora. You're the best friend I could have and I don't know what I'd do without you."

Dora's lip trembled and she couldn't fight it anymore! She had to tell Wes the truth! She burst out with a yell, making Wes jump in surprise.

"I can't stand it anymore! The only thing wrong with you and Danny is me! I'm the one that got between you!" Dora admitted, her head hanging down in shame.

"What are you talking about Dora?" Wes asked confused. "It's not like you made the carriage go into the river."

"Okay…that was an accident….following several attempts that were on purpose." Dora said.

Wes's face dropped and then he enquired, "And it wasn't you outside Danny's tent?"

Dora chuckled nervously and nodded, admitting it was her outside Danny's tent. Wes frowned and asked, "You woke Danny up after I left?"

"It wasn't easy neither. That man can sleep, let me tell ya!" Dora said.

"Dora what is going on? What did you do to make you do all of this?" Wes demanded, now getting angry at his friend.

"You getting married! Everything was gonna change! When a you get married, the husband's ancestors take over guardianship which means I was gonna lose you….and my pedestal!" Dora finally revealed.

"You're telling me, you got between me and Danny so you can keep your job?!" Wes asked, now very angry.

"I'm sorry Wes!" Dora apologised, feeling so guilty about what she did. "But…you and Danny are so different."

Wes's eyes widened as he realised something and said, "Wait a minute! We're not as different as I thought. All those problems….they weren't us….they were you Dora!"

Dora looked down. Wes smiled and began to race ahead as he said, "I've got to talk to Danny and tell him I love him."

"Wes, I'll make it up to you. I promise." Dora offered.

But Wes shoved her into the bag as he said, "Forget it! You've helped enough."

"DANNY! Danny!" Wes called out as he began to catch up.

Danny stopped and turned around, but then suddenly an arrow was fired straight past his head and hit the stone wall on the side.

"AMBUSH!" Wes shouted.

"BANDITS!" Dash shouted as ropes fell from the cliffs above and several bandits both human and ghosts began to attack.

"Keep close and protect the Princesses!" Danny ordered.

Dash, Kwan and Tucker each grabbed the girls hands and led ran off to protect them.

One of the bandits saw them running and ordered his men, "You two get the gold and you two come with me!"

The other two bandits chased after Dash, Tucker, Kwan and the Princesses, while the others stayed behind and fought against Wes and Danny as he changed into his ghost form and ecto-blasted two of the bandits away.

Wes stood beside Danny and said, "I got your back."

Danny gave Wes a small smile and then went back to the fight. Wes dodged the human bandit's kick, while Danny froze one of the ghost bandit's solid in ice and then ducking and tripping one of the other bandit's off his feet.

The girls and the boys continued to run, but Paulina tripped over. Dash ran back and tried to keep the bandits away from her, while Tucker and Kwan stayed to protect Star and Valerie.

Wes ran over and grabbed onto the rope, swinging around before kicking off the wall coming round at full speed and kicking the leader right in the face, knocking him unconscious. Danny and Wes suddenly heard a scream and recognised it as Paulina!

"The Princesses!" Wes gasped and the two ran to catch as fast as they could.

"Take your hands off me!" Paulina demanded as she struggled in the bandit's grip, one of them was trying to rip the gold bracelet off her wrist but it wouldn't come off.

"It won't come off!" The bandit shouted.

"Then we'll take the whole package!" The ghost bandit said and threw Paulina over her shoulders and began to run off with her.

"TAKE YOUR HANDS OFF HER!" Dash roared in anger.

Tucker and Kwan jumped off from the top of the hill and began to fight against the bandits. Danny and Wes arrived to help, while Star and Valerie remained at the top of the hill and began throwing rocks at the bandits, trying to help as best as they could.

Two of the bandits once again grabbed Paulina and began running away.

"DASH! HELP!" She screamed.

Dash gasped and shouted, "PAULINA!"

"DASH!" She screamed once more as she was being carried off.

Dash was about to go after them, when Danny stopped him and ordered, "Hold them off! We'll save her, I promise. Wes, let's go!"

Danny grabbed onto Wes and began to fly after the bandits that took Paulina. They caught up as they were running across a rickety old bridge that stood between the two cliffs. Danny grabbed onto the bandit's legs, causing him to trip over and Wes grabbed onto Paulina as he did.

She put Paulina behind her and ordered, "Run!"

Paulina ran straight back to the other side while she and Danny thought off against the other bandit. Dash and the others made it over there and Paulina ran straight into Dash's arms and embraced him. They suddenly gasped as they turned to see the human bandit blasted Danny with a gun, causing him to change back into his human form as it cancelled his ghost powers.

The bandit then punched Danny straight in the face. Wes caught Danny in his arms and helped him stand back up while the bandit ran. They were about to go after them when the ghost bandit held a sword and cut one side of the bridge's rope.

Wes and Danny struggled to keep their balance and the bandit cut the first rope once again. The others gasped at the sight, but Wes grabbed hold of the rope and then Danny's arm, trying to keep them falling to their death as the bandit's ran off.

Wes gasped as one part of the rope snapped and they screamed as they fell but then stopped as the rope stopped, but the rope was already breaking a bit.

"Danny hang on!" Wes shouted as he struggled to hold the rope and Danny.

"Wes…it won't hold us both." Danny said, despairingly.

Tears began to fall from Wes's eyes as he knew what he was implying. Wes shook his head in denial and said, "It will…it will Danny….just give me a second…I'll think of something…."

The rope began to break away more. Danny then spoke in quiet sad voice, "Wes…"

Wes looked down at him as Danny finished, "I'm sorry. I…I love you. Never forget that okay."

Danny's hand suddenly loosened and slipped out of Wes's grip. He began to fall to into the mist below.

"Danny! DANNY!" Wes screamed as Danny disappeared and….he was gone.

Tears began to fall form in his eyes. Wes's heart broke as he realised that his love was no more.

After managing to pull Wes back up, it began to rain. Lightning struck and the night sky was grey. The boys and the girls took shelter inside a cave. Comforting each other as they mourned the loss of General Danny Fenton, a friend and fiancé to Wes.

Dora and Cujo peaked out from the bag and saw Wes standing where the bridge once stood. Both of them looking down in sadness and Dora, also looking down in tremendous guilt. Now fully believing what happened was completely her fault. If she hadn't messed with Danny's and Wes's relationship, none of this would've happened she kept thinking to herself.

Wes stood there, not caring about being soaking wet from the rain. Tears continued to fall from his eyes as he looked down at Danny's sword in his hands. Wes never got to tell him that she was sorry and that he still loved him.

Memories flowed through his head. From when Wes first met him after joining the army, saving his life from the avalanche, him sparing his life after Wes was discovered, the many times he had come to see him after she had saved China from Vlad Plasmius and when he proposed to him.

As lightning struck once again, Wes could see Danny's eyes looking at him through the blade of the sword. With a mournful scream, he raised the sword and stabbed it into the ground and began to cry his eyes out. Wes's heart broken with sadness and grief. He stayed there kneeling, holding the handle of the blade as he continued to cry.

When morning had come, the rain had stopped. Tucker, Dash, Kwan, Paulina, Star and Valerie all walked up and stood behind the mourning Wes as he just sat there, quietly with his eyes closed.

"Wes….we're ready to go through with the wedding." Valerie said.

"No." Wes said as he stood up. "Your orders are to take care of each other."

"But…" Kwan was about to protest but stopped.

Wes then said as he opened his eyes and said with determination, "Losing Danny will not be meaningless. No matter what it takes….I'm finishing this mission."
