Chapter Twenty-Nine

FBI building…

Outside the interrogation room…

Stan was finishing telling Megan what he first told Alan, about the offer and how he got involved with mafia and Alan couldn't help but feel sadness for his friend. From what Stan told him, Alan knew that he had no idea as to what he was getting himself into, since this man, Lawson, was able to pass himself as a legitimate businessman and fooled Stan into thinking that it was a good business deal.

'I wish Stan felt like he would've been able to tell me or someone as to what he found himself in, all of this could have been avoided.' Alan sadly thought to himself

Alan tried to keep in touch with Stan about the business at first, but as Margaret got sicker, he was only able to talk to Stan at least once every month or so and the conversations were usually short and they were only able to start regularly talking again a few months after Margaret died.

'Even though we have a better idea about those bodies, I have to wonder, where is Lawson? I mean we haven't heard anything about him during this entire case, so where could that man be?'

As if to answer to his question, David came into the interrogation room, motioning for her to come with him and they entered the room Alan was in where David had some news to share.

"So Lawson, the man Stan says contacted him, was one of the bodies that we found, as it seems one of his men turned on him and killed him and hid the body."

"Do we have a confession?" Megan asked, a bit too eagerly

"Yes, Raymond admitted that he was getting tired of following Lawson's plans and decided to take matters into his own hands. He killed Lawson and put his body in one of the buildings, thinking it wasn't going to cause any problems, but that wasn't the case." David said, before hesitating to say anything else

"What kind of problem?" Megan asked, now concerned, both about the case and her boss, who is still in recovery, last she heard.

"Raymond is demanding protection as he is afraid that he is going to suffer retribution from his fellow gang members if and when they find out that he killed their boss without telling them."

"Okay, I will talk with the director to see what he has to say about it, in the meantime, have you heard about Don's condition recently?" Megan asked, knowing Alan was worried about his son, as they all were

"Yeah, good news, they just moved him into intensive care and they think he will only need to be there for a couple of days." David said

"Oh, good." Alan said, who sounded he was about to cry

"Any idea when he will regain consciousness?" Megan asked

"Don't know but the doctors think it might be a couple more days before he wakes up." David said, giving a sympathetic look to Alan, who still looked worried about Don

"Well, at least he's alive and in the hospital." Megan said

"Can you take me back to the hospital, David?" Alan asked eagerly

"Sure, I was going to head back there anyway as the Director wanted to get an update about Don's condition in person at the hospital, as well."

"Why?" Megan asked, curious about why the director would want to be there as she grabbed her coat on the way to the elevator.

"Don't know but we will soon find out." David said as they left, wondering what purpose of having Merrick there and why he was so keen on hearing about Don's condition but the first thing on their mind was their determination that he was going to make it and the bad guys are going to go away for a long time.
