Dinner Time – 400 words
This ought to be interesting, Callen couldn't help but think. Hetty had an idea which never bored well for anyone. Especially when it involved something like this. This being cooking. Christmas cooking to be exact. Hetty thought it would be a fantastic idea for each of them to cook a part of a traditional Christmas Dinner the way they would do it at home and then they would bring it all together in some sort of Christmas mash up. Because that couldn't go wrong in any way, could it?
Sam got the ham, Deeks those little sausages, Nell the stuffing, Eric the roast potatoes and Kensi the mashed potatoes (because that really was the safest thing for her to cook).
Of course, Hetty hadn't trusted any of them to do the actually cooking of the turkey, which was fair enough. None of them, despite what Deeks said, claimed to be chefs.
Callen, well, he got the carrots and Hetty had refused Deeks' idea of Kensi swapping with him because apparently they were even easier than the mashed potatoes.
The only problem was that he didn't exactly have a traditional way of making carrots for Christmas dinner or any other parts of a Christmas dinner. It wasn't like he had a lot of memories of it growing up. Sure, the odd foster home had had it but not all of them. And even fewer had let him participate, never mind pulled out all the stops for it like Hetty was wont to do.
And what was a traditional way to do carrots anyway? Surely everyone did them the same way - just shoved them in a pot of boiling water until they were a bit soft and called it a day? There was really nothing to it.
Then Callen remembered that he did actually have a few traditions around Christmas. But it wasn't from any foster home, no it was his last and true home as a child. Hetty's. She had taught him how to do carrots...
So that's what he did. He honey-glazed them, added a few herbs and a dash of sugar and baked it until they were soft and almost caramelly. They smelled so good he almost didn't want to share them.
Callen proudly put his wrapped dosh among everyone else's. He looked up to see Hetty give him a proud look which he couldn't help but return.
