Chapter 12

The night was very peaceful and quiet. Sho and Haru were sleeping restfully as well. The only sound you could hear was the clock's ticks. Then, it was 12 am. Nothing was happening yet, nothing that can disturb them sleeping.

Although Sho was restfully sleeping, he felt something unusual. It felt like somebody is looking at him! Sho's brain began to process what he felt that made him woke up.

He gently opened his eyes. His senses were correct - somebody was looking at him in his room. It's not Haru!

He immediately sat down from lying and was extremely surprised at the being he saw. He can slightly see the face because his bed was near the window and the figure stood near his bed's footboard. The moon that night was very bright that it reached Sho's room.

It was Spiller! He was super shocked! Mind you, he wasn't looking down. He was slightly looking up. He finally found words to tell the being in front of him.

"Spiller! How come?"

This time, Spiller was tall, like a human! He looked extremely different as well in terms of his posture and the way he dressed. He looked so magical, like he was a royal prince in a different dimension.

Sho was still in shock and didn't know what to do. Spiller's reaction was stiff like nothing happened - the usual him. He decided to speak to enlighten Sho.

"I came back to correct things. I am the only one who can do it."

Everything was still overwhelming for Sho. He had a lot of questions for Spiller but do not know where to start. The two became silent for a moment. Sho then decided to get up from bed and talk to Spiller in a more comfortable space.

He asked him if they can go downstairs and talk. Spiller agreed. They moved out of the room quietly becuase Haru was still restfully sleeping.

They went to the kitchen, and Sho turned the lights on there. He offered a seat and water to Spiller. Sho also sat down, and he decided to open up the conversation.

"What happened?"

Spiller looked in his eyes before answering him.

"I was poisoned and dead. The last thing I remembered in the Borrowers' world was I was in pain."

Sho could not help but notice how awkward it was listening to Spiller as he was referring to the "Borrowers' world".

"When I woke up. I was in a place full of grass and flowers. I didn't see anyone. The place was very empty, except flowers and grass. I walked around until I found a huge tree. I sat under it and tried to observe my surroundings.

To my suprise, a lady appeared in front of me. She was very magical and divine, like a goddess. She only smiled at me. I only looked her. She then spoke and told me a very shocking revelation."

That alone was already very intriguing. Sho thought that there were things in this world that humans did not know.

"She told me that Borrowers were..."

Spiller couldn't continue. He was frowning like he still couldn't believe what he knew. But he decided to continue.

"We were like you - humans."

Boom! It was a bomb for Sho. He slightly oppened his mouth in shock. He couldn't believe what he just heard. He interrupted Spiller's story.

"What?! How come? I mean how did you become like... Borrowers?"

Spiller continued his story.

"I also asked her the same question. She told me Borrowers were cursed. There was a human village thousands of years ago that lived in an isolated area. They lived a very basic life - hunting, farming, having a family, stuff like that.

Like us, they also have a group of hunters. One of them killed an animal one day. It was a deer. They didn't know it was a spirit of the forest - a strong one. As a consequence, the entire village was cursed. They became very little people, including their houses and other stuff, literally the entire viallage. And that's when Borrowers were born."

This time, Sho dropped his jaw in shock. He then drank water because he felt like he suddenly became dehydrated. Spiller drank some water, too. After a short moment of processing everything, Sho asked a follow-up question.

"How did you become alive again?"

"To answer that question, I have to ask you a question first."

"Go on," Sho did not hesitate.

"Have you wondered what happened to the other Borrowers who were already dead, like our ancestors? If a Borrower can come back to life, why was I the only one?"

"Yeah, that's a good point."

"The hunter who killed a spirit in my story was my ancestor."

Sho frowned. Spiller, on the other hand, understood that he was confused, so he continued to explain.

"My ancestor only killed an animal form of the spirit in the human world. He did not kill the spirit completely. But that was a major sin in the spirit world. And the lady who appeared in front of me was the deer my ancestor killed."

"Oh..."

"She is the spirit of preservation. Her name is Freyja. She told me that she saw how the Borrowers suffered and how we..."

Spiller became teary. Sho got a little worried.

"It's okay if you don't want to continue. I'll understand."

"No. I have to tell you all these because you are part of this."

Sho got even curious. Spiller continued.

"Frejya also saw how we give love to others."

Spiller emphasized this, and Sho understood the meaning behind it. He only looked down.

"What made her gave me a second chance to live is she saw my selfless love."

Sho felt sorry for Spiller.

"The reason I came back was to tell this story to the Borrowers and to encourage them to live like we were supposed to."

"How are you going to do that?"

"I will visit them. I am a living proof that we can still have a second chance. I asked Freyja how we can correct what my ancestor did. She told me to visit the place where our original village was and call her there."

"What will happen if you call the spirit there?"

"I am not sure. She can end all the Borrowers' lives effortlessly or..."

Sho understood what Spiller would like to say. He then became teary because it gave him a lot of hope, especially for Arrietty.

"What you are thinking is right. We could be humans again. For me at least, I look like a normal human already."

"I never thought of Borrowers as Borrowers. I always see you as normal humans. Only, you were very tiny."

Spiller could feel the sincerity behind Sho's words. This made him decide on something. Sho, on the other hand, shared his story as well.

"The moment you died, Haru saw something in my room. She said there was a very bright light that came out of my room. She was really scared. I encouraged her to sleep in my room, so we can witness if something happens again."

Spiller was thinking, like he was connecting the dots.

"I was waiting for you to ask me how I came here."

"Oh, yes! That. I forgot."

Spiller looked down and smiled a little. That was the first time Sho saw him smiled.

"I came out of the doll house in your room."

"What?!"

"Yes, the process was very magical. The doll house didn't get big. I just came from there. It was like a portal from another world."

"That was probably where the bright light came that Haru saw."

"I thought so, too."

"I knew it! There was something about that doll house. My grandmother used to tell me to take care of that doll house, so I didn't even bother touching it. I want to preserve it."

"Aaaaaahhhhh!"

Both men were startled with the shouting. They looked at the person who shouted, and it was Haru! They didn't realize she was already there.

Sho calmed Haru down and explained to her what happened. The three spent the rest of the night talking. They came up with a plan on how to visit the Borrowers and on what they need to do about Frejya's story.
