CHAPTER 7-SKYPAW
I stalked up on the mouse. I was downwind of it, so it didn't even notice me. I pounced when a loud rustle startled it. I still managed to catch it and held it in my jaws when my brother; Thistlepaw; emerged.
"What were you doing!?" I hissed quietly.
"Hunting! I nearly caught it and you came and startled it!" Thistlepaw yowled loudly. Birds called alarms and the prey wasted no time scurrying away and I whipped around to Thistlepaw.
"There went all the prey!" I growled.
He looked around, flattening his ears.
"And that isn't stalking! The mouse noticed you! You were even upwind! You made such a racket I though you were a fox. my white tail was bushed up in hostility and anger. Thistlepaw lowered himself even more.
"I came to hunt after Nightclaw said the same thing. I ran off to show her I can hunt." his eyes glinted once mischievously and he snatched my mouse.
"Hey!" I yowl.
There goes the last of the prey, I mentally scold myself. Nightclaw sat in a clearing, eyes shining with pride at Thistlepaw.
"No he didn't!" I pant. Nightclaw turned to me and I met her emerald green stare.
"What?" she meowed.
"I-caught that-and Thistlepaw-took it-to try and-impress you-and said-it was his-but I caught it-" I managed to choke out through pants.
Nightclaw sternly looked to Thistlepaw, who now seemed very interested in the pebble of sand by his paws.
"Thistlepaw, you have failed this assessment," Nightclaw snapped.
Thistlepaw whimpered.
"I had rather you openly admit that you haven't been training correctly than take prey from a senior apprentice; your brother no less!" Thistlepaw visibly flinched as though Nightclaw had struck him. Technically, she did. Thsitlepaw hated being reminded that he was the last apprentice; a moon late; and that even though he was the same age as Jaypaw, Rainpaw, and I, he was still a younger 'paw. He sauntered away, everything drooping.
"Rest up," Nightclaw mewed softly. Thistlepaw perked up at that.
"We have to train you on everything tomorrow, so you need to have your energy!" She hissed, rushing him onward with occasional flicks of her nose or bats on the ear. Thsitlepaw dimmed once more. I retrieved the mouse and managed to surprisingly find three squirrels and shrew before eating my shrew, chatting around with Jaypaw and Rainpaw, before going to my moss nest at moon-high.
