I hope you enjoy this new chapter and please take a moment to read my new GG tale... It was something I thought about as I watched GG over Thanksgiving. Its a different start for Logan and Rory.
Shira Huntzberger looked around at the small inn she was standing in front of, a look of slight distaste formed on her face. The place was quaint but not up to her standards. After looking around outside one last time she walked into the door and glanced around to find who she was looking for and after not seeing her she walked into a small library and studied the décor.
"What are you doing here?" came a harsh voice from behind her.
Shira turned around and studied the woman in front of her for a long moment. These two women had been working together on and off for over 10 years and she knew that neither of them was willing to let everything they had worked for fail now. Each of them had done questionable things but it was all to ensure the best for their children, they were the mothers and to them they knew best.
"Lorelai, we have a problem," Shira stated as she looked at the woman. "Logan knows."
"How could you screw that up?" Lorelai seethed. While her relationship with Rory was currently nonexistent, she knew it was just a matter of time before her daughter came crying to her. She had expected it a few months ago after she had told Shira that Rory was pregnant and she was pretty sure it was Logan's. Shira told her she would handle it with Logan's fiancé and from everything Lorelai understood it was taken care of, but Rory still never reached out to her. Her phone calls to Emily also seemed to end and Lane avoided her in the town as did Zach.
"I'm not sure what happened," Shira sighed as she sat down on the couch. "Mitchum and Logan somehow figured out that we had known and then set lawyers to threaten Rory. I originally thought she had a miscarriage," Shira stated with a shrug. "When I went to see her after the lawyer visit she was in the hospital."
"What," Lorelai exclaimed. "She was in the hospital and you didn't tell me!"
"I figured you knew," she retorted. "You always talk about this bond between the two of you I assumed you knew and were working to ensure she never contacted Logan again." She studied the brunette woman with a thoughtful expression. "When was the last time you talked to your daughter?"
Lorelai sighed and sank down into a chair next to her. "Not since she told me she was pregnant. I have been waiting for her to contact me but she seemed to cut me off as well as Emily."
"She is living in the Gilmore mansion," Shira informed her. "She is definitely becoming the lady of the house, there were maids."
Lorelai thought about what she was being told and the feeling of betrayal bloomed in her. After everything she had done to keep Rory out of that life she was now immersed back into in. Both women fell into silence as they thought about the turn of events. "So, what happened today?" Lorelai finally asked knowing it had to be bad if her partner was here in person talking to her.
Shira started telling the story of the confrontation from that afternoon and that now Mitchum was filing for divorce and she was stuck in a tiny apartment and cut off from everything.
"You're an idiot!" Lorelai yelled when Shira was done talking. "What are you doing here? What if you are being followed?"
"I need money," she calmly replied. "And you are going to give it to me."
Lorelai couldn't contain her laughter. "Why the hell would I do that?"
"Because you wont want anyone to find out everything you have done over the years," she replied smugly and watched as rage filled the other woman's face.
"You wont want your involvement to come out either," Lorelai replied but some of her confidence in those words were unsure.
"I have nothing left to lose," Shira replied with a smug smile. "However, what you have done… you don't want your involvement to get out to this town now would you?"
The next day was a flurry of activity with Rory being released from the hospital. She was thrilled to able to go back home but not looking forward to the week of bedrest that may extend longer depending on her check up the following week. Paris had planned on visiting in a few days and Rory had made her promise to take it easy on Logan and she begrudgingly agreed. Paris had lots of opinions on the agreement that Logan and Rory had and since she had already given Rory her thoughts and opinions she felt she also needed Logan to feel her wrath as well. While Rory was an idiot she was at least faithful but Logan… to her he was still the spoiled trust fund idiot and needed to finally grow up. Paris just hoped that this pregnancy would force him to realize what he had and he didn't run and shirk his responsibilities. While there was no doubt that Rory would be an amazing mother and this child would be lucky to have her the jury was still out on Logan and she didn't have much faith he would step up.
Rory had also offered a guest room for Logan so they could try and talk more, and he could assist with getting the nursery together. A large part of her wanted to shut Logan out completely, afraid of getting her heart broken again or find out that he was just like Christopher. The thought of Logan turning out to be her dad, the dad she had when she was a child, terrified her. The problems between them were nowhere close be being fixed but they both held out some hope. Logan was thankful for the chance Rory was giving him and he knew he needed to step up and prove to her that he was in this, not just for her but for their child. Rory was able to get a recommendation for a couple's counselor and they would have their first session in a few days, Dr. Dave Jackson would be coming to the house since Rory wasn't supposed to leave. Emily would be staying for another day, she knew that Rory and Logan needed time to try and work through things and she didn't want to be underfoot.
Arriving at the house was a flurry of activity. Logan was amazed at how the maids acted with Rory, this was no normal employer/employee relationship. Both Paula and Ingrid loved working at the house, and it was evident that both women looked after Rory and made sure she had everything she needed. Livy, wasn't due back for another day so Paula had immediately worked to set up a light lunch and organized dinner from an Italian place that Rory loved. Colin had dropped off Logan's bag from New York and one of the maids had already unpacked everything and promised to have his things cleaned or dropped off at the dry cleaners. As Logan settled into the room he took in the comfortable feel or the room that reminded him so much of Rory. Her touches were throughout the home and it amazed him to find a society home have such a comfortable feel to it, there were the antiques and priceless items, but they were mingled with casual items. As he explored the house he was happy that their child would grow up in something like this but it pained him to know that Rory had created this life, this home without him.
Logan and Rory soon developed a routine but neither wanted to address the elephant in the room. Both were afraid of what could be said in anger and had silently agreed to hold the heavy topics until the therapist was with them. Soon the day of the appointment was there, and Logan and Rory sat in the parlor both looking apprehensively at the older man in front of them.
"Now, Rory and Logan," he started after the introductions were made, him insisting on them calling him Dave. "This needs to feel like a safe place for the both of you to talk openly and honestly with each other. I just have two rules, one is that you don't interrupt each other and the second is to count to ten before responding when you are upset. Nothing said in anger will help you two move forward. Now, Rory why don't you start tell me why you suggested therapy."
Rory took a deep breath and looked between the two men. "I have been seeing Dr. Choo and she had helped me a lot to understand my actions and why I have done certain things and behaved in certain ways. I know I am horrible with communication, I run instead of dealing with things." She let out a shuddering sigh. "These are all new revelations. With Logan… I've realized that we don't talk and with us having a baby soon I think we need to work through our issues to… I guess parent together."
Dave smiled and looked at Logan. "So, Logan, why did you agree to therapy?"
He looked at Rory for a moment and took a few deep breaths. "Rory suggested it and I want us to move forward. What I want is the whole package, marriage, kids… but since finding out I was going to be a dad," he sighed and closed his eyes for a moment. "I've been told that I don't communicate, I hide and don't express how I am feeling."
"So, you've been told," Dave said looking at him intently for a moment. "Do you agree with what you've been told?"
"At first, no," Logan stated honestly. "But the more I thought about it and the more my friends pointed out certain things I know they are right. I hold everything in when it comes to Rory and I don't… I don't talk and I don't tell her how I feel."
"And why is that?" Dave prodded.
"I'm afraid. I feel like whenever I need her the most, she leaves me. I needed her when I proposed, I couldn't imagine my life without her and she said no, I was destroyed. When she came back into my life, I didn't want to let on how much I need her and when I entered into an arranged marriage… I needed her to tell me not to do it, to give me a reason not to do in but she left again."
Both men heard Rory's sharp intake of breath and Dave looked at her. "Rory, how do you feel about this?"
She took a few breaths before talking. "I feel like he leaves me to. He proposed at my college graduation without ever talking to me about it and when I tried to tell him I needed time he left me. When we ran into each other five years ago I was afraid to tell him I still loved him but I tried to show it by making trips to London and staying longer than I needed to… but whenever I wasn't there he was out on dates. When he told me about the engagement… for me it was more proof that he wasn't as invested in us as I was but I couldn't stay away. I needed him. I feel," she let out a small, choked sob. "I feel like I am never going to be as important to him as he is to me."
"I have always felt like I come in second place to her mother," Logan countered. "Even when we dated in college if her mother needed her, she went running. Her mothers opinion has always mattered the most to her."
"Your right," Rory sighed. "And that is something that I have been trying to work on. Growing up she was all that I had. I never realized how… toxic our relationship was, how much a deferred to her wishes until recently."
Both sat in silence for a few moments before Dave asked, "what changed now? Why did you suddenly realize this?"
"Therapy," Rory replied and closed her eyes for a moment. "I guess I had started to realize some things as I wrote my book, but after I found out that I was pregnant…" She trailed off knowing she needed to explain this to Logan, how her insecurities and her dependance on mother caused her to be afraid of everything. "I told my mother, and it did not go well. She completely shut me out, just walked away from me. She had her wedding ceremony and then the next day… I was still asleep and she came into the room wanting to talk. She asked me who the father was and when I refused to tell her until he knew she lost it. There were accusations of me being a trust fund brat and that I had whored myself out to an engaged man… She told me that she and Luke were going on their honeymoon and I needed to be gone by the time they got back. I was not the person she raised and she couldn't be around who I had become. After she left I started thinking about all the other times she had shut me out, times she pushed her opinions on me and I broke down. I ended up having an anxiety attack and started therapy after I left the hospital." She paused as she tried to get her words together and calm down. "I think I had subconsciously known for years that I caved into what she believed was best. My entire life it was me and her, I had no father, no relationship with my paternal grandparents and she alienated my from my maternal grandparents. It was her and I against everyone and she had… from a young age I was taught that all I needed was her and I felt… dependent on her, I owed her for sacrificing her life so she could have me and raise me. I was terrified of losing her, disappointing her…its why I had never told her that Logan and I had reconnected… and after we did I started spending less time with her, phone calls were less often… I wanted to put my happiness first for once but with him never really showing me he wanted me it just… I guess in some ways reinforced in me that I would never be enough for anyone."
Logan sat in shock at her words, he always knew that Lorelai had a deep hold over Rory but he never would have expected her to act the way she did when she found out Rory was pregnant or how she had controlled Rory throughout her life.
Dave looked at the two of them and saw them processing everything. "Our time is almost done for today, but I want you both to think about what you want. What you each truly want from the other going forward. But first, I want to know why you both are here, why you are putting yourself through this."
"I love him" Rory sighed and the say time Logan firmly stated, "I love her."
They both looked at the other and they each felt hope that maybe they could work though this and more forward to create something for them without the expectations of others and the disappointments of the past.
