DISCLAIMER: I do not own Dr. Stone! :)
To my awesome reviewers (24/01/21): Hello, GeneralLurker, DracoSoull, Too Lazy, PuppyCake, neko-alme, and taking it easy! ^_^ Thank you so much for reviewing the twenty-ninth chapter of No Stone Unturned! Kohaku tried to explain, but from Kinro's level of understanding afterwards, it didn't go as well as she wanted XD Since this fanfic is still in Season One, some of it will seem like a walk down memory lane :) Kohaku may have gotten a unique result, but she tried! XD I'm pretty sure Senku made cola for the others later on in the manga, although Gen was the only one who defected for a carbonated drink XD I'm so glad that the first chapter of this fanfic helped you like Ruri more! I really like her character and her connections to Kohaku and Senku. She really cares for both of them, especially Kohaku! :D I think Kohaku and Chrome have that connection of being the only two people in the village actively trying to help Ruri, and their own friendship, as well! :) I'm sure Senku has a soft spot for Suika - she's so sweet and helpful! :D I'm happy you liked that scene! I was so excited about including it there, because Kohaku does very special things for Senku! :) I hope that means you liked that chapter! XD As you can see, I ship them too! They're really great together! :) I'm glad to hear that, especially since the chapter you're about to read now will be about sand, too! XD I hope all you enjoy this new chapter, and thank you again! ^_^
Chapter Thirty: (S01 E10b) Silica Sand (Days 01-03)
It wasn't everyday that Senku witnessed somebody undergo a class change from sorcerer to scientist, but it happened on the first day of their month-long countdown to the Grand Bout.
"So," Chrome asked as he jogged after Senku, "what will we create with science next?"
"There's something that's just as important as iron that we need to make…"
He proceeded to tell Chrome about glass, and halfway through his explanation, they were joined by Kohaku, who had just finished Kinro and Ginro's morning training, and Suika, who had been watching them.
"With glass," Senku said, approaching Suika, "we can finally remove this…" he suddenly lifted up her watermelon mask, "…and reveal Suika's face to the rest of the world!"
After Kohaku's panicked attempt to put Suika's mask back on her head, and her and Chrome's shock when Suika's face seemed to wrinkle up, Suika explained her "fuzzy sickness" to all of them. In response, Senku said to her that her eye problem was a non-issue in the modern world, and told them to get some digging gear to gather something that they would use to make glass.
"Gather something? Isn't it in Chrome's collection already?" asked Kohaku.
Senku shook his head.
"Nope; there wasn't any silica sand in the shed of science. But I saw something else that's a good clue for where we can start digging. We just have to ask Chrome to take us to where he found it…"
One difficult climb later – why did so many scientific things involve climbing? - Senku grasped his chest and took deep breaths in an effort to take in more air.
When he felt like he could breathe properly again, he instructed Chrome and the others to go to different parts of the mountain side and hit the rocks with the tools they brought – he, Chrome, and Suika chose to stay relatively close together, but Kohaku placed her shield and weapons on a stretched piece of leather before climbing several feet up the mountain and deciding to dig there – and, in the process, reminded Senku of the gorilla Chrome always claimed she was, but he valued the lumpless state of his head too much to mention it out loud.
Unaware of Senku's thoughts, the newly minted scientist placed his hand in one of his pouches for a moment before taking a large piece of translucent crystal and holding it up for everybody else to see.
"This was where I found these baaad clear rocks as a kid!"
"Are we going to collect those shiny rocks, Senku?" Suika asked. She had put her watermelon mask back on, but Senku could hear the smile in her voice. "They're so sparkly!"
Instead of answering her right away, Senku studied the ground, and, after choosing a spot where the stone looked the most brittle, he took one of his iron tools and hit the vulnerable area. After just one strike, the stone cracked and revealed transparent sand that Senku scooped up in his hand.
"Rocky outcroppings like this are the perfect places to find silica sand!"
Compared to iron sand, silica sand was ridiculously easy to gather, and they all filled their baskets within two hours. After they returned to the camp and ate lunch, Senku asked Kohaku if she could crush the sand they had gathered into even finer powder while he and Chrome fetched the crushed seashells and dried seaweed from their swimming excursion over a month ago.
As Kohaku used the large stone rolling pin – which they had originally crafted to make foxtail grass flour for the ramen – to grind the silica sand, between intervals, Suika would take the finely crushed sand and place them in her emptied basket. The two of them repeated the process while Senku and Chrome worked next to them – Senku slicing the roasted seaweed so that more of it would fit in the vessel they would use later, and Chrome checking the crushed seashells and using a makeshift mortar and pestle to crush shell fragments that were a little too large for their purpose.
The strenuous nature of Kohaku's task – at least, more strenuous compared to what everybody else was doing – reminded Senku of what she had been doing that morning.
"Hey, Kohaku, how did your training with Kinro and Ginro go this morning?" Senku asked, curious about how the first session under their new alliance had gone.
She stopped moving for a moment to think, then started pushing and pulling the stone rolling pin once again as she replied, "It could have gone better, but it was only the first day. Kinro's more advanced than Ginro, just like I expected."
"More advanced? Does that mean that he was the one who taught Ginro that special technique of his?" Senku chuckled.
"You mean Ginro's Let Somebody Else Handle It technique?" Chrome chimed in, grinning. "I know Kinro's his older brother, but that's an original Ginro technique for sure!"
While Suika giggled at the name of Ginro's special move, Kohaku smiled and replied, "That might be the only 'battle' technique where Ginro has more experience than Kinro – well, that and waving his spear around. Ginro actually has a really flashy fighting style. I was expecting him to be more panicked during training, so having something to work with was more than I expected."
"Wow!" cheered Suika, clapping her hands, "so Ginro is a great fighter!"
"Ahhh…" said Kohaku, averting her eyes and focusing back on her task, "that might be saying too much, Suika…"
After crushing all the silica sand, Kohaku left them to fetch hot spring water for her sister. During the next two days, Senku and the others were preoccupied with making ramen, which they would need to bribe the villagers into helping them melt the silica sand and other components to make glass.
(End of Chapter Thirty.) (24/01/21.)
I. My personal comments: Like last time (during the iron sand days), I'll be showing what their days and weeks were like, but this time, for the month leading up to the Grand Bout... and this time, more Kinro and Ginro! :D
II. Question of the day: What do you think about their discussion of Ginro's special technique? XD
III. A tiny request: Thank you for reading my fanfic! :D If you've read this far, I hope you'll consider taking an extra minute to leave a review for Chapter Thirty ("Silica Sand")? :D Reviews really mean a lot to me as a fanfiction writer, and all kinds of positive, negative, and/or constructive reviews are very welcome! ^_^ Even if it's the year 5738 or something, I would love to hear your thoughts on this chapter! :D (By the way, I'm "fireflyhwufanficwrit" on Reddit and "firefly-hwufanficwriterrrrr" on Tumblr :D)
