I am back.
"His vitals are fluctuating," She was listening to the doctors' talk. "Doctor!" One of the nurses looking over the charts called out, "Subject's EKG is fluctuating,"
"Can we not call him a subject, he is as human as any of us," She snapped, "Go check on him,"
"Captain Rogers is coming out of deep sleep," the doctor announced. "Shift him to the recovery room," Rhea said as she walked out of the room.
It was around three in the afternoon when she found herself sitting at her desk reading through her grandfather's notes, when the phone rang, "Hello,"
"Miss Stark you are wanted in Director Fury's office," She heard Cindy Fury's receptionist. "Okay," She said curtly before getting up from her chair locking up the notes in the drawer.
She was walking towards the elevator. 'Serum increased the metabolism by four times,' the sentence floated through her head. She went into a fully automated mode as the wheels turned in her head, she entered the elevator and pressed the floor number to Director's office "Ice in general arrest cell aging along with salt, basically, he was pickled in the sea, Serum's property kept on regenerating his cell, YES!" She jumped up and down in the elevator not noticing the weird stares she got from its occupants. She got down on the next floor and took the elevator to the med bay forgetting about her meeting with the Director. She looked like a kid who got her Christmas present early. She sprinted through the corridor to Dr. Jefferson the senior scientist who was in charge of the recovery.
"Miss Stark," The man looked at her shocked. "I know how he survived!" She exclaimed. She clapped her hands together. The older man smiled at her fondly.
"Go ahead,"
"The serum increased Captain's metabolism four times. My grandfather had noted that alcohol had little to no effect on Captain Roger's system. He attributed that to increased metabolism almost four times of a normal human. Probably the same was with cell regeneration as he healed faster than normal people. Now, Ice in general arrests cell aging and freezing it, along with salt he was pickled in the sea, Serum's property kept on regenerating his cell hence no frostbite. This is the most plausible explanation I could come up with," Rhea took a deep breath as she finished. Dr. Jefferson smiled at her. "That kind of clears a lot." He agreed, "Miss Stark, you are needed at the director's office," one of the nurses informed her.
She facepalmed. "On my way, I will be back," She ran out.
She entered the director's office. "Miss Stark you would be only consulting regarding Captain Roger's recovery,"
"Excuse me,"
"You are showing an unhealthy attachment to your assignment,"
"First, he isn't an object; second he is a national icon so treat him with some respect. Above all of this he is human, serum or not," Rhea snapped. "Which is why I asked my colleagues to stop referring to him as a Subject? If you find that unacceptable I am not going to consider you human," Rhea spat out.
"You are not going to be directly involved with Captain Roger's rehab," Rhea glared at him.
Rhea went to the gym. Right now she could kill anyone. "Stark, want to unwind," She heard Rumlow, she felt like gagging.
"I am not going to be a murderer," She muttered under her breath, "No thanks Rumlow,"
"Seriously Rumlow, leave the kid alone," She heard Romanoff, "I had it under my control,"
"You did, you would have murdered him."
"What happened?"
"Out of all people, you think I would talk to you," She snapped as she took out her swords.
"Right," Romanoff nodded as she walked away. Rhea sighed. She continued practicing.
She was right now taking a break; she noticed it had been an hour since she had entered the gym.
"All Agents Code 13,"
"What the fuck?!" Rhea cursed as she heard the code blared through the intercoms. She grabbed her hoodie and ran to the elevator to the lobby. She saw Captain Rogers run out of the building into the streets of New York. "Wah, breaking it slowly huh?" She thought, she wore her hoodie over her sweaty body as she walked out of the building. She ran through the streets to the direction in which Captain Rogers had taken off.
She was panting by the time she reached Steve. She saw Director Fury speaking to Captain Rogers.
"You have been asleep Cap, for Seventy years," Rhea shook her head, but now there was no point in breaking it slowly.
"I had a date," She gasped, she remembered Peggy talking about the dance. She felt bad for Steve. Peggy could no longer remember things, it broke her. It's been almost a year since Peggy's health started to deteriorate.
Steve heard a gasp from the crowd. His eyes fell on a petite woman. Something about her was familiar. She had her hair in a ponytail and was wearing a pair of leggings and a sweater maybe.
Rhea's eyes locked with his, she saw confusion in his eyes. She smiled a bit before she disappeared into the crowd. There was something she just didn't know. While she felt her heart pick its pace she felt everything else fade when their eyes locked, a tender smile played on her lips. She felt herself floating.
She walked into her apartment drained; she noticed there was a series of calls on her phone. It was from Laura. She opened her phone,
"Hey, Ri I know you might be at work but Cooper wanted to talk to you. Call back once you are home. Love you kid."
She called back, "Ri..." Cooper's voice came out, "Hey Bud,"
"I wanted to tell you something,"
"Yes, Cooper,"
"I want to give Lila a gift, but I don't know what to give." Cooper sounded so defeated. "How about your first set of bow and arrow?"
"You sure?"
"Of course Coop, how many times did she sneak them out of your room?" She asked as she went to check on her refrigerator for ice cream.
THE NEXT DAY.
Rhea put on her very cheery face as she went to Coulson's secretary. She knew he was kind of struck by her. Maybe she could flirt with him and get details about Captain Rogers.
"Hey Jerry," She said as she placed a cup of coffee in front of him. "Tell me that isn't Starbucks,"
"Nope, it's from the café across the street and I have bagels for ya."
"Are you sure you are a Stark?" Jerry asked her as he sipped the coffee. "Why? Because I scrunch my nose at all those high-end shit." She asked as she plopped herself on his desk. Jerry blushed.
"I know you decided to linger around because you need something because you don't do anything more than drop me my coffee and you brought a bagel which you don't do." Jerry looked at her sternly.
"I am usually late, Jer."
"Ah uh, you need something. Rhea, you suck at flirting. You didn't get that from your dad." Jerry tried to take the bagel from her. "No, you will get that if you get me something,"
"If it's Captain Rogers no. Not happening."
"Jer,"
"Nope,"
"Miss Stark," She froze as she heard Fury's gruff voice. "Follow me," She groaned. She got up from her perch and sauntered off. "Hey give me my bagel," She heard Jerry.
"No, Jerome," She shot back.
"I remember clearly telling you to stay away from Captain Rogers Case. You step in only when we ask you to."
"For the last time Director, he is as human as you and me. That man woke up Seventy years into the future. Things have changed. New York is a jungle. That man needs someone."
"Captain Rogers has been assigned therapy and a starter pack for the 21st Century."
"A box of files won't help. A therapist can't answer everything he needs a friend."
"We don't do friendships here."
"Look who's talking." She muttered under her breath."Listen here director, that man has survived a war. For him, all of it is yesterday, not seven decades before. He needs human compassion."
"Are you sure you are a Stark?"
"I didn't know us, Starks was thought to be heartless murderers. And yes I didn't appear out of thin air, I got these humane feelings from my mom and which you clearly lack. If Peggy finds out the bullshit you speak be ready for a good round of ass-whooping. My dad got it. you would too." She stormed out of the room. She dropped the bagel at Jerome's desk.
She turned the corner to her office when she bumped into someone. "Dude watch where you are going?"
"I am sorry Ma'am" Rhea looked up rubbing her nose. Wow, she bumped into Captain Rogers.
"Howard?" Rhea looked at him quizzically. "I don't think I look anything like my Grandfather." She smirked as Steve blushed and rubbed the nape of his neck. "For starters, I am a female."
Steve chuckled "Steve Rogers, Ma'am." He thrust his hand towards her. "Rhea Stark, Captain," She took his hands in hers. A wave of shock went through her. It was her turn to blush. She cleared her throat as she let go of his hand. "I need to go. One done with Captain Pirate, hop into R & D, maybe we can hang out." She said smiling brightly. Steve nodded.
Rhea was going through the reports of Steve's recovery when the intercom buzzed.
"Stark,"
"Miss Stark, Captain Rogers is waiting for you in the lobby."
"Thank you, Nancy," She grabbed her coat and walked towards the lobby.
"Hey," She greeted him. "Hope I didn't come across as a creeper by asking you to hang out with me,"
"Uh, um, no Ma'am but I was quite taken aback." He said honestly. She smiled, "Don't call me ma'am. I feel old." She chuckled. Steve smiled at her.
"Thank you for doing this." Rhea looked at Steve confused, they were sitting in a cafe a few blocks away from the HQ.
"You don't need to thank me. You were my grandfather's friend. He spent a lifetime searching for you. I think he wouldn't have left stranded in this concrete jungle." Rhea took his hand in hers giving it a small reassuring squeeze. "Won't Fury be pissed at you?"
"Fury can stick it up to his ass, that man thinks of himself freaking Odin of Earth." Rhea snorted. Steve looked at her confused.
"Classified information, one day if you take up SHIELD's offer you will know." She said absentmindedly. Steve looked at her, she had straight black hair which was cut short framing her face with brown wide eyes.
"You are staring, Captain."
"Sorry Ma'am," He blushed profusely. She smiled, "Call me Rhea Captain,"
"Then it's only fair you call me Steve." He said she laughed a bit.
"I heard SHIELD gave a 'how to survive 21st Century starter pack'." She finished with a sarcastic note. Steve chuckled.
"They did."
"Did they tell you what to do with it?"
"Whatever the agent said sounded Greek and Latin to me."
Rhea internally rolled her eyes. Starter pack it seems. She scoffed. "Did they give you a phone?" Steve looked at her quizzically. " there is one at my apartment." He spoke.
"I mean these rectangular things." She showed him her phone. "They are more like a portable version of the wired phones we used to use." She explained, "It has apps or applications that help us store numbers." She showed him the app. "Do you have yours?"
"No, I left it at my apartment."
"Ohkay, try doing something if you aren't able to call me from the other phone. I will give you my number." She took a tissue and jotted down her number. Rhea's phone buzzed.
"I need to go. See you soon," Rhea hugged him and left the cafe in haste.
Rhea Stark was different. He had only been in this new world for a few hours but Rhea might be the only person who made him feel a bit better. She had literally barged into his life and Steve realized she was not going to leave him. He smiled at the tissue paper in his hand.
