Chapter 11: The Last Day
Waking up groggily, I was relieved to see Seth was still with me. He had kept his promise to stay by my side last night. He was awake, looking at the drawing again from the night before. His finger traced over his wolf body absentmindedly as he tried not to wake me.
"Sorry…" I whispered.
He was surprised when he heard me speak, and looked confused. "About what, Han?"
"Your sleep was ruined because of me last night," I muttered. "All over a stupid dream."
He sighed. "I slept. I only woke thirty minutes ago. I'm just glad you were able to sleep without any more dreams last night. I really wish you never begged to be told about Alice's vision though… you weren't mentally ready for that kind of stress after just learning about werewolves and vampires so recently. It's only been two weeks today since you saw Jacob and I phase for the first time."
I grimaced. "Feels like a long time ago honestly. I was out of it for like two days after."
He nodded. "Yeah…" he kissed me softly on the side of my head. "Let's not think about vampires or werewolves today. Let's just have a lazy day. You told me you like Disney movies. I'm not a huge fan, but I'm willing to become one. I know you told me your favorite movie is Mulan. We can watch that first while we eat some breakfast. Jacob and your dad left a few minutes ago to head to Forks, so it's just us. Embry will be over around ten."
I shut my eyes, so glad Seth was so understanding. I felt like I could never give anything to him in return. "Okay… I… I like that idea."
He got up off the bed and stretched. Then he turned and scooped me up. I gasped as I was lifted from the bed. "Seth! I can walk ten feet to the kitchen!"
He smirked. "I know. But then it wouldn't be a lazy day." He carried me into the living room instead and sat me on the couch. "Cereal?"
I blushed and gave a small nod. "I can get it… you're the guest." I went to stand but he leaned forward so he could put his hands on the top of the couch and block me.
"Don't move from this couch. You'll probably slip on a spill in the kitchen with how clumsy you've been lately."
I pouted, but he was gone before I could protest. I heard the clanging of bowls, and the scattering of cereal. The fridge opened and shut. Liquid poured. The fridge was opened and shut again. Seth came back with two plastic bowls of off brand cereal, however his bowl was filled to the brim with barely any milk.
He set his bowl on the coffee table while he handed my bowl to me. Then he opened the cabinet beneath our tv and skimmed through our VHS tapes. He found the one he needed, and put it in. Soon Mulan was playing on the screen.
Seth and I stayed like that for a while. We ate our breakfast, watched the movie, and Seth let me lean against him with no complaint. At 10am Embry came in. We had put in Aladdin now, and Embry walked in with horror.
"No! Don't tell me you let Hannah go Disney again?!" Embry smacked his forehead. "Do you know how long it took Quil, Jake, and I to get her out of that phase?!"
I grabbed the remote and turned the volume up.
Seth shrugged. "Hey. I'm enjoying it."
Embry huffed. "Whatever. I'm going to rummage the pantry before I get stuck hearing mushy music." He disappeared into the kitchen.
I heard Seth sigh. "You didn't tell me they were so controlling in the past."
Embry came back in with a bag of chips. "I heard that Clearwater! Watch it!" He stepped over to the recliner and plopped down. As he ate the chips, he said, "I'm surprised you're not watching Mulan."
Seth shook his head. "You're two hours late. If you want to see the pretty female warrior though we can watch it again after this."
Embry was horrified. "No!"
I smirked. "Hey, Seth. I know what I want to watch after this."
He twirled my hair on his finger absentmindedly. "Yeah… what's that?"
"Cinderella."
Embry groaned. "No… that's my least favorite one."
"Then it's a definite," Seth agreed.
It was around noon when Jacob and dad got back to the house. Embry was pouting on the recliner as the fairy godmother started to sing "Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo" and twirl her wand.
Jacob came in with horror. "Seth! What have you done?!"
My dad sighed. "Looks like he brought the Disney addiction back." Dad wheeled into the kitchen, wearing a button up and black pants. Jacob was in a nice white button up and dress pants also.
"I let you babysit and you bring back middle school Hannah!" He looked over at Embry. "Why didn't you stop this?!"
Embry sighed. "They were already two movies in. It was too late."
Jacob sighed. He started to unbutton his shirt and spoke while he did. "Quil will be here at six so we can drive over to the party."
Embry groaned. "You're still going to that? I thought she punched you?!"
Jacob smirked. "She'll be glad to see me. But Sam won't let me go unless you both come, and you all owe me one for covering your shifts the other day."
"Hey?! We've been covering your ass to help out with Hannah so you can go flirt with Bella. We don't owe you squat," Embry snapped.
Jacob ignored him and headed to his room. Embry huffed.
Seth seemed thoughtful. "Does make me want to see the Cullens lair. Maybe you could snap some photos?"
Embry shook his head. "From what I hear there's nothing that exciting. No coffins or moates. Boring."
We watched movies for the rest of the day. Seth really meant it when he said he was not letting me do anything but be lazy. After Cinderella I let Seth choose from our VHS collection. He surprised me when he shoved in Beauty and The Beast. I looked at him puzzled. He shrugged. "My mom liked this one when we were kids."
I smiled. "See. You secretly have a Disney heart."
Seth hugged me closer. "Maybe that's why you're my soulmate. To bring back out the Disney in me."
Embry scoffed. "Thank goodness it was you and not me then."
Seth sighed. He whispered in my ear, "Embry's secretly jealous I imprinted on you and he didn't. I think he had a secret crush on you growing up."
Embry snapped with warning, "Shut it Clearwater…" he didn't deny it though and this made me blush. No wonder Embry kissed me. I only felt bad I never returned his feelings.
"Sorry, Embry... you were always just an older brother to me…"
My werewolf friend waved me off. "I'm okay, Hannah. Just know I care for you and that's all that matters. I'll find my imprint one day. I'm a patient guy. Plus, at least I got out of Jacob's wrath. Poor Seth will have to suffer the overprotective brother from now on."
At ten to six, Quil came in the door. We were watching The Lion King. The song "I just can't wait to be king" was on its second verse.
Quil was shocked and ran in to confirm what the others already knew. "No!"
Embry sighed. "Yep… our hard work has been ruined."
I sighed. "I like this better than all your action movies. There's no singing in The Gladiator and Lord of the Rings just drags."
Jacob entered wearing a regular plain shirt and some cut offs. He tossed a shirt at Quil, and one at Embry. I guess they decided going to the party shirtless would be too rude. Jacob spoke as he came in front of the TV. I pouted as he blocked the view and Seth protested. Jacob paused the VHS player and looked over at me. "I'm going to the party, but I'll have my cell. Call me if there's any issues. Don't stay up too late rotting your brain with Disney princesses. Tomorrow we go back to educating you on real movies."
"You're not the boss of me," I muttered.
"But I know where the breaker box is," he threatened.
I stuck my tongue out at him. He was amused. Seth laughed. Quil and Embry snickered. Once they were gone, I settled back against Seth. He hit resume on the remote.
An hour passed. My dad wheeled in around seven and joined us for the last movie we watched. Dad picked this one, and as we ate some fish we watched Lilo and Stitch. Dad liked this one because it was centered in Hawaii and made him feel close to Rebecca.
The movie was just about an hour in when suddenly the front door slammed open. Dad and I jumped. Seth had heard whoever it was approaching. He wasn't thrilled by the harsh entry though.
"Sam?" Dad asked. "What's going on?"
Sam came into the living room. I was alert as I saw his serious expression. "Jacob has called a meeting here. Alice Cullen saw that the newborns are coming to Forks. They are working for Victoria, and their target is Bella and the Cullens. We're forming an official alliance with the Cullens to fight them."
Seth stood. He was horrified by this news. "When are they coming?"
"Friday. We're meeting the Cullens in a few hours to learn how to fight the newborns. One of their own has experience with this type of fighting. It's important everyone comes."
Seth was horrified. "No! What about Hannah and the other imprints? We can't all just leave La Push."
"Collin and Brady are going to stay behind with Hannah while we train," Sam said.
Leah, Paul, Jared, Collin, and Brady suddenly came in the house. They had heard what Sam said. I suddenly felt self-conscious. I had brushed my hair and gotten slightly ready for the day, but I was in my sports shorts and a tank. I knew the pack had seen me in a worst state though, so I calmed down.
"Geez. Can't catch a break for five minutes," Paul muttered. Then he glanced over at the TV. "What the hell are you watching? Who's the blue smurf?"
Jared caught the movie in his view. He rolled his eyes. "Educate yourself Paul. That's Stitch."
"How do you know that?" Paul was amused. "Don't tell me you're into little kid movies?!"
Jared scoffed. "As if. Kim likes this one. She makes me watch it a lot."
Seth flicked the VHS off seeing that we weren't going to get to watch it much anymore. As he did, Jacob's Volkswagen pulled into the drive. Him and the other two came inside. My dad immediately went straight and serious as he switched to his Council role.
Sam spoke once Jacob, Quil, and Embry were in the crowded room. "What time are the Cullen's expecting us at the clearing?"
Jacob answered, "At 1am we plan to head that way, but the training won't actually start until three. We'll watch them until sunrise. Carlisle said it's a good idea we get there a little early and circle the area to make sure it's clear. We don't want any newborn spies who can go relay their worries to Victoria. He also said that Jasper needed a quick hunt. The empath wants to be at his strongest so he can show us just how crazy newborns really are, or something like that. Carlisle wants us all to take in the scents of the Cullens too so we don't accidentally kill them."
Seth spoke up. "I still think I should stay back with Collin and Brady. I don't like Hannah being here with so many of the pack gone."
Collin pouted. "Aw. Come on Seth. I know we're the newest members but have some faith in us."
I rubbed my arm slightly. "I… I don't want Seth to go… I have a bad feeling..."
Sam sighed. "I know you're anxious when he's not here. But we need him to come see the training just for a little bit. Seth won't be fighting in the clearing since he's still the youngest apart from Collin and Brady, but he will be guarding Bella and you with Edward so he needs to be prepared."
I hung my head. Seth frowned, knowing he couldn't go against Sam. He stood and turned to look down at me. "I'll be back, Hannah… as soon as we're done I'll be with you again. You just get some sleep, and in the morning I'll be right by your side." He leaned down sandwiching me between him and the couch, and he kissed me softly on the lips as his seal to his promise. He pulled away to make sure I understood.
I nodded. I wanted to believe him.
However, my dream from last night kept replaying in my mind making me nervous despite his reassurance. My eyes shot to Collin and Brady, who smiled at me with comfort. Two werewolves protecting me was better than none I guess.
My brother stepped over then and sat down giving me a hug. He kissed me on the forehead, whispering, "I'll be back. Dad's here though if you need him. We'll only be gone for a few hours. Get some sleep, Han. Love you."
The pack left. All but Collin and Brady. As I was left to watch them file out I felt so scared suddenly. I didn't want to upset Collin and Brady by not trusting they would protect me, but not having Seth made the uncertainty come.
My dad noticed my anxious expression and wheeled over to grab my hand. He gave it a squeeze. "I'm here, Hannah… I will protect you too. But it doesn't seem there will be a threat tonight. We can all relax. The pack hasn't smelled a vampire in our territory since the one that came here. And the Cullens would've told us if anything changed with Alice's visions… Just try and get some rest. We're all here… you're not alone..."
I nodded. He pulled me up just a bit so he could hug me to him. He kissed me on the side of my head, and whispered, "I love you sweetie. Nothing is going to get to you without going through me first."
Later that night, I had showered and drank some tea to try and calm my racing heart. But something in my gut unsettled me. Even as Collin sat with me in my room looking through my sketchbook, I couldn't lay down and sleep. The night was about to become very long and endless.
Collin and Brady took thirty minute shifts each. Since they had to not just protect me but the whole reserve they were swapping out to not get too exhausted. On one shift around 3am, Collin noticed I still wasn't asleep. I was sitting on my bed hugging my knees tight to me. He tried to cheer me up by telling me embarrassing stories about Seth so I would calm down and sleep. It did cheer me up a little, but I wasn't tired.
Brady came back, and Collin rushed off again. We sat in my room still, the desk lamp illuminating the area to give some light. As I hugged a pillow, Brady looked over my sketches and told me what was going on. The Cullens were all practicing different attacks and defenses against the newborns. The wolves were just observing. He told me also that Jacob and Seth wouldn't shut up about how worried they were about me. I smiled slightly. It felt good to have protectors sometimes.
Collin was back once more at about 3:30am. He looked a little anxious this time. He didn't come in the house, and instead called Brady outside. I saw the interaction from my bedroom window. It was apparent to me, even in the dark, that something was wrong. Brady nodded and raced back into the house. He came back to my room looking on high alert.
I was worried. "What? Is something wrong?"
He didn't answer. He grabbed my arm and pulled me to my bed from where I had moved to the window. "Hannah. Stay here. Sit absolutely still. Don't leave this house for anything. Do you understand?"
"Brady… what's wrong?"
He didn't answer. He left the room and went down the hall. He spoke something to my dad and I heard my father tell him something back. Brady was back again to my room. He was shaking.
"Brady?! Tell me what's happening?!"
"She's here." Brady glanced over at me. "She somehow knew the majority of the pack would be gone tonight. The leech is coming this way..."
I was horrified. Then I understood. "Me… she's coming for me… to hurt my brother… and the pack..."
Brady knelt in front of me grabbing my hand. "Collin and I will fight her… as long as we're standing, she won't touch you. We will protect you for both Jacob and Seth. But you have to stay inside. Promise me, Hannah."
But I couldn't. I didn't make promises anymore.
Third Person POV
The werewolves sat in the clearing facing the Cullens as the family practiced different maneuvers. It was already over half an hour past when they started training, and the sun would be rising soon. Jacob was engaged and excited about the fight, while at the same time concerned about his sister. The other werewolves were amused by Jasper's knowledge of war. Seth couldn't sit still though. He hated not being with Collin and Brady protecting Hannah. Leah heard his thoughts from where she sat beside him.
She'll be fine, Seth. Collin and Brady are young, but they know how to fight. They will protect her. But there's no way Victoria will go there tonight. There's no reason to. You heard the vampire chick Alice. Hannah and Bella will be together in three days while the rest of us fight the newborn army. Alice sees her sleeping in the tent. She'll be okay.
Seth let out a breath and looked back at the fight. He tried to believe his sister. Leah was right. There was no reason to fear. Victoria had not shown herself for days. She was letting her newborns do her dirty work. She was probably preparing for the attack on Friday.
As Jasper and Emmett were about to lunge, the wolves caught a thought in their mind. They all were shocked when they heard Collin's panic.
Leech… east… Coming.
The wolves were confused. His thoughts were all over the place. Sam immediately took charge. He stood quickly and stalked towards the treeline. Collin! Think slower! What are you saying?!
The Cullens noted Sam's sudden concern and the pack's restlessness.
A vampire! Coming straight for La- Shit! The wolves were stunned as a flash of red shot across Collin's view. A vampire landed in front of him, and her crimson eyes were full of fire and determination. Redhead! Victoria!
"I see my puppet's friend was right. That werewolf loverboy and his pack aren't here," she hissed. "Fools." She shot forward and jumped over Collin. She took off towards the reserve. Collin snarled and chased her.
The werewolves were horrified. Jacob and Seth were already running. Emmett and Jasper stopped their fight as they sensed the pack was in distress and saw the two wolves take off.
Edward was shocked and infuriated as he read the pack's mind and saw Victoria's intention. He snarled. "No! How did she know?!" He looked back at the others who were confused. "Victoria is headed towards La Push! Collin is pursuing."
Alice was horrified. "How could I have not seen this?!"
Quil! You're the fastest of us! Go, Sam ordered. Quil jerked and took off in the direction towards home. The other wolves took off to follow.
"Alice! I need you to concentrate!" Edward grabbed his sister's shoulders. Alice grabbed her hair. Her eyes snapped open. She finally figured out Victoria's plans through the images in her head. "You and Emmett go!" Edward ordered. "Take the shortest route!" Alice and Emmett rushed off to follow.
Carlisle looked over at Jasper. "You, Esme, and Rosalie take Bella back to the house. Edward and I will go."
Esme was heartbroken. "It's happening, isn't it? Alice's vision?"
Edward grit his teeth. "Maybe we won't need to fight Victoria. Maybe we can kill her tonight." He stepped over to Bella and kissed her. "I'll be back."
Bella was heartbroken as she finally understood. "Save her, Edward. Please. This is all my fault."
Edward shook his head. "No. This isn't your fault, Bella... Victoria is pissed at Jacob and the wolves. She knows Hannah is important to the pack… she must have vampires with gifts working for her. She knew Hannah wouldn't be guarded well tonight. This was the chance she was waiting for. We let our guard down… but hopefully the younger wolves can stall long enough for us to save her."
He and Carlisle raced off into the woods then, following the scent of the wolves and the other two Cullens.
Seth was in a panic as he followed Quil who had managed to zoom ahead. His mind was only on Hannah as he feared the worst. Jacob was horrified and blaming himself over and over again.
Jacob felt it all was his fault. He had let his guard down and Victoria found out about his human life. She learned about his family. She was pissed at him for defending Bella and helping the Cullens, and now his sister was about to suffer.
We can't be too late! Please! Seth sped up, his eyes blurring. He should've never left her. He should've fought Sam's order. He should've stayed when Hannah begged him to.
Sam heard his thoughts. This is my fault now?!
Everyone! Keep focused! Embry snapped. Hannah and Billy need help!
Hannah POV
A howl rang in the distance. Brady headed to the window. The sound of the front door opening was heard, and I wondered who it was. For a second I could've sworn I heard my dad's wheelchair on the ramp. I was too frozen to my bed to ask though.
"Collin!" Brady shouted. "Speed up! She's almost here!"
The sound of a tree snapping echoed outside. I gasped and my heart started to pound painfully in my chest. A snarl rang from a wolf. A hiss followed from what I could only assume was a vampire.
Brady turned to hug me. I was shaking and crying. "Hannah… the pack will know by now. I'm sure they're on their way. No matter what happens to Collin and I, just remember our duty is to protect humans. And you and your father are worth dying for."
I was horrified. Brady moved back to the window. I stood from the bed and managed to see what was happening from around him. A pale woman in dark clothes looked to be jumping from tree to tree. Collin was in his wolf form and smashed his body into the tree she landed in. The large trunk snapped, and the vampire jumped out of view. Collin did as well just as the massive pine crashed, and I heard more of his snarls. Then I heard a heart wrenching yelp. I watched with horror as the massive wolf body flew into the window scene before us hitting the ground and tearing up earth as he slid.
I cried in horror, "Collin!"
The red haired vampire appeared beside his body and smirked as she looked over the unconscious wolf before her. A snarl rang from Brady. He knew he had to go help him.
"Hannah! Stay here! I mean it!" Brady jerked my window up and smashed my screen out. He quickly climbed out of the window, landed on the grass below, and erupted into his giant dark, ashy-brown fur form. He raced after Victoria in the dark yard, just as she was about to grab my cousin again.
She jumped away from Collin so she could dodge Brady. Brady quickly slid to a stop and turned in her direction lunging towards the vampire. They moved so fast, I had trouble keeping up in the darkness of the early morning. All I could see was Brady snapping at her and her white body jumping out of the way. But then she jumped up in a tree and Brady couldn't reach her. Her eyes shot towards me from where I watched in the window. She grinned.
"Call off your mutt, or I kill them both."
Her words sent shivers through me. Brady snarled and looked back at me. He shook his head telling me to stay back. Victoria took his distraction.
"No! Brady!" I covered my mouth as Victoria crashed down on him and smashed his body into the dirt. She grabbed his muzzle hard ready to snap his neck.
"NO!" I had grabbed the window sill in horror. "Brady!"
She looked back at me. "Hannah… do you really want your friend to die?"
My eyes filled with tears. Brady snarled again.
She smashed Brady into the ground one last time, his head hitting the earth hard, and he fell unconscious like Collin. She jerked him up grabbing his muzzle and jaw ready to snap his neck and kill him.
"No! Stop!" I panicked. "I'll go with you! I'm the one you want! Just leave them alone! Please!"
She smirked. She dropped Brady on the ground. Then she stepped over his unconscious body towards me. I could see he was still breathing though. Despite the terror, I was relieved both of the werewolves were not killed.
She crossed her arms as she stood in the yard. Her dark eyes kept on me. "Come out… I don't have all morning sweetie."
I felt my heart pound painfully in my chest. We all knew why Victoria wanted me. My brother and the pack had killed her friend Laurent, and now my brother was protecting Bella from Victoria. Victoria wanted to make my brother suffer by either killing me or turning me into a vampire.
"Delaying it won't matter. Either you come out, or I come in. It's over," she hissed. "You're mine now. Your foolish pack finally gave me an opening, and they will suffer for their mistake."
A gunshot went off. Victoria didn't even flinch as the bullet hit her in the face. I gasped and looked at the other end of the yard to see my dad had wheeled outside with his Winchester. "Stay the hell away from my daughter you leech!"
"Dad!" Before I stopped myself, I ran through the house and outside. Racing around the house barefoot, I saw with horror that Victoria had already lunged at my father and was holding him so that her one hand was on his throat and he was being strangled in the air. His chair was on its side. The rifle was across the yard snapped in two. My dream flashed through me again.
"The father," Victoria hissed. "Maybe if your little girl isn't enough to warn the mutts tonight to stop interfering I'll come back for you."
I panicked. "No! Let him go! Please!"
She dropped my dad and he landed with a gasp in the grass. He coughed as air entered his lungs again. She turned her eyes towards me. I could see from the sudden light of the moon that appeared from a small break in the clouds her fire red hair. It was almost like a campfire. Her crimson eyes sparked in the night.
I broke the distance, knowing it would bring me closer to her. I didn't care. I had to check on my father. I fell beside him on my knees. He was shaking, but when he felt my hand on his arm he grabbed my arm and choked out, "No! Go! Run Hannah…"
Victoria stood right beside us. She crouched in front of me on the other side of my dad. Her cold stone hand grabbed my chin and I immediately felt frozen in her grasp. "My minion told me you were the mutt's twin…" She jerked my head from side to side to observe me. My heart pounded in my ears. "You are quite pretty. Too pretty for me to have even guessed that werewolf was your brother. Thankfully that blanket's scent and the blood on that cotton brought me right to you." She inhaled, and then grinned. "Good. You smell human still. I feared you might have turned into one of the wolves and my time would be wasted."
My father sat up using his arm to keep him steady. He grabbed Victoria's arm with his other hand. She was amused.
"Get your filthy hands off my daughter, leech! Kill me, but leave Hannah alone!"
My dad's words horrified me. "No! Stop, dad!"
Victoria released my chin, and she smacked my father's hand off with ease. He gasped and fell back to the ground. Victoria stood and stared down at my father. "Sorry, but this is personal. Laurent was a brother to me, and your werewolf boy killed him all to protect Bella." Her ice-cold hand grabbed my arm suddenly and jerked me up from my father. "So I'm going to make him pay." She jerked me to her side and hissed in my ear with her cold breath, "Say goodbye to daddy. He won't want you after I'm done with you tonight."
My dad was grimacing in pain. My eyes filled with tears. I stared at Collin and Brady, both in heaps on the ground unconscious. I looked back at my father who was cringing in pain. I found my voice. I couldn't really believe this was the end. I never would've imagined my death would be by a vampire. But I had to surrender. I couldn't watch my dad, Collin, or Brady die. I wanted to save them.
"Dad… It's okay…" My whole body shook and had turned to ice. But I wanted to tell my father I forgave him. I wanted to give him closure so he wouldn't blame himself. "I'm sorry for being so angry before… I love you so much… tell Jacob and Seth I love them too..."
My father tried to push himself up again. "No… Hannah…" he grabbed Victoria's pants leg. "Please! Don't! Turn me. Not her!"
Victoria hissed. "You? I need the young and strong. Not the weak and old. You'd be a waste." She used her other barefoot to shove my father's arm off her. He was forced to let go. "I know you hate my kind. When your daughter turns, we'll see just how much you truly love her."
"Go rot in hell," my father hissed through his pain. "I will always love her. You're wasting your time… this will hurt the pack and my son, but they will still stop you. Your last day is around the corner you bitch."
She growled. She shoved her foot into my dad's side and he was forced to roll a few feet. He fell unconscious from the force.
"No! Dad!" I tried to pull from her stone grip. She held me firm.
"Your father's insult just sealed your fate more," she growled in my ear.
Victoria was no longer patient. She jerked me up into her arms. Everything was a blur of black shadows. Air hit my face as if I were in the back of a fast moving truck. Then just as we took off, we came to a stop. Victoria dumped me on the ground. I gasped in pain. Trying to sit up, I saw we were still surrounded by trees and forest. I knew we were far from civilization though.
She sighed. "Those fools. Leaving such untrained pups to protect their beloved pet. Kind of made this too easy." She turned to face me. "It does sadden me they don't care as much about you as that brunette." She didn't sound sad though.
My eyes widened as the lady with red hair stepped towards me like a predator to her prey. I tried to stand and back away, but I hit my back against a tree behind me. She smirked as she eyed me with her crimson orbs.
"Hannah Black… I finally have you alone."
I was in tears. I shivered. "Why are you doing this? I thought Bella was who you were after? How did you even learn about me?"
She answered with a cheshire grin. I could still see her well from the moon that kept its presence above. The full moon was like a horrifying omen. It was almost a celebration of this moment.
"I did some snooping. Well, my partner did at least. He took a few of Bella's things from her house. He stole a book that had an old Christmas card sticking in the pages. It was a picture your family took in the past. I had seen your brother's human form and wolf form during my time in and out of the area after the Cullens left, so I was aware from the picture that it was indeed him. A younger version of him, but definitely the mutt. And then I saw his twin sister beside him in the photo. So innocent. So pretty. I knew it would torture not just him but the werewolves as a whole if I took you away. From the way they protected you so strongly these last few weeks, I could tell they deeply care for you."
I swallowed. "Why… why me?"
She stepped closer and her fingers grabbed a strand of my black hair. "I considered trying to figure out where your other sisters were, but I decided there was no fun in that. Why go after the unprotected, when clearly you mean more to the pups." She slid her nail along my cheek. I whimpered. "I'm aware your wolf friends and the Cullens are working together to protect that Bella girl. Right now I hear they are training on how to defeat my newborn army when we attack in a few days. I'm tired of your werewolf brother and his pack's interference. So this is my way of showing them I'm not happy."
My eyes widened. "Your newborn army? So… you really are the one behind the killings in Seattle…?"
She smirked. "I don't control the newborns. My partner does it for me. Precaution since the Cullens seem to be able to watch me. These newborns are a distraction. My favorite puppet Riley is a fool of course. He believes I love him and will do anything I ask. But there was only one man I ever loved, and that girl Bella caused him to meet his end. Bella took away everything from me. And now she is being protected by both a werewolf and a vampire. It's so annoying. What is she to them? Why is she so important that my mate James and my good friend Laurent had to be turned to ash?"
She suddenly slammed her hand into the wood beside me with rage, and the tree behind me trembled and cracked. She moved her other hand from my hair, and then her fingers slid to the vein on my neck. "So the way I see it… an eye for an eye. Your brother and his friends killed Laurent. I get to turn you then."
My heart skipped a beat. My memory shot back to that vision I had so long ago. A white wolf with topaz eyes. A wolf and a vampire in one. Alice had seen it too. Her vision was finally happening. Only it didn't feel like the wolf part of me would emerge. I was about to become a vampire and nothing more.
I was fearful. I tried to save myself. "I know you're angry and feel alone… I… I've been there. You feel like there's no happiness in sight. But… this won't solve anything. Killing or turning me… and killing Bella… it won't bring James or Laurent back. It will just make you more of a target to my family and the rest of the pack. You have a chance to run. To escape."
She laughed. "Oh, sweetie. Your innocence is so pure." She sniffed against my neck, and I felt her let out some air after a moment. "No worries, Hannah…" She spoke my name almost seductively. I shivered. "I won't kill you. I know that would make things too easy. I'm going to turn you into the one thing your family hates more than anything."
My eyes widened in horror. I knew it was about to happen. The realization made me go into fight mode. "No!" I quickly tried to break away from her, but she stopped me by grabbing my shoulder and shoving me hard. She pressed me to the tree and squeezed my shoulder causing my bone beneath to crack. I let out a scream of pain as my whole arm felt like knives.
"Of course, you could've changed into a werewolf and saved yourself. But I can see if that were going to happen you would've already." She leaned in towards me. She gave a cat-like grin again, which I could see even under the dark shadow of the tree. "Tell me one last thing before I dig into you… How does it feel that the werewolves left you only protected by these useless members of their pack? Those pups barely breathed on me when I knocked them unconscious. What were their names again? Collin and Brady?" She brushed her ice cold thumb against my ashen and cold cheek. "Doesn't it break your heart that they sent their strongest members to protect a human that has nothing to do with their kind?" She chuckled. She didn't actually want an answer. She continued. "What fools… abandoning their own princess to save an annoying useless brunette. I can't wait to turn you and show them their error."
I tried one last time to stall. I knew the pack had to be coming soon. I prayed they would make it. "Why turn me…?" I tried not to show my fear. "Why not just kill me?"
She smiled. "Because, my dear… if I turn you, then it's your werewolf lovers that will have to kill you." She pulled me forward so she could whisper in my ear. "And if they let you live but banish you, then you can come help me kill the girl that destroyed everything."
I shook my head. "No… I wouldn't help you hurt Bella..."
She breathed a laugh. "I don't really care either way. At least I can have my revenge on your brother and those other mutts just by knowing I took away the thing they love and they failed."
A howl suddenly rang through the air. More howls followed. Victoria's eyes widened. She hadn't expected she would be discovered so soon. She probably didn't know about the wolves ability to communicate through their thoughts. I was certain Collin and Brady had told the pack in their mind what was going on before they passed out.
"Damn it!" She suddenly jerked me from the tree and shoved me down. I fell onto the forest floor in agony. "Sorry, sweetie. I was enjoying our time together honestly. You actually made me care about you like a sister for a second. But it looks like I'll have to speed this up and end our discussion."
She suddenly crouched and grabbed my broken shoulder: I gasped from the pain. She yanked me up and grabbed my chin with her other hand. Her breath brushed on my neck. Her teeth grazed my skin. "You seem like a sweet child who's already suffered. I wish it didn't have to come to this, but you're my best way to show them how pissed I am. Hopefully they don't kill you when you become their enemy. I'd love to see my creation in the future."
I screamed. It was time, and I was scared. Tears fell, sobs escaped, and I struggled against her hold. "No! Please! Jacob! Seth!"
She opened her mouth. Her teeth pressed to my skin. I stopped breathing as terror overcame me.
She bit. Hard.
The sharp pain as she pierced through my flesh was blinding. Then her venom burned into me. Once she injected me with just enough, she pulled away and vanished, leaving me in the dark of the woods. I dropped back to the forest floor. My insides filled with fire immediately from the stinging slice in my neck. I writhed and screamed alone for only a moment. Steps entered the area. I couldn't see who it was though. My insides were relentless.
I screamed again and jerked as knives pierced through every fiber of my being. My broken shoulder didn't even hurt anymore because the fire took over that pain.
"Hannah!" A vampire girl I was pretty certain was Alice from my brother's description landed beside me suddenly. I could see her tiny frame in the moonlight through my foggy gaze and tears.
I had only been writhing on the ground for a minute. They were a minute late. My fate had clearly been sealed. The fact they were only one minute late was a clear indicator that the supernatural world had wanted this. This was my destiny. Alice's vision was always meant to happen.
"Emmett! Quil! Go!" I watched through my pain as a large burly vampire and familiar chocolate brown wolf blurred by in the direction Victoria had fled only a second before. My vision darkened then as fire shot through me. I screamed loud as every part of my body burned.
Alice panicked. "Hannah! Hang on! I'm going to try and suck it out." She pulled me up just enough to reach my neck and shoved her mouth to the spot Victoria had bit. It was too late though.
Something snapped within me. My body shook violently. I knew what was coming. I could feel something that had once been dormant clambering out of its pit and through my whole body. The wolf had awoken.
I shouted with fear over the fire, "No! Get away!" I was afraid I'd hurt her. I knew she was in my line of attack. She knew too. She released me and jumped back just as my body jerked and the wolf emerged. As my whole body twisted and morphed, the venom raged on. Then white fur exploded around me and my wolf form appeared.
As canines took over my teeth, I snapped and grit them as my insides continued to burn. I howled in agony. I couldn't stand and remained on my side. The venom raced through me even in my wolf form. It wouldn't stop. It was happening… Alice's vision was happening…
A dream… I wanted it to be a dream… but I knew it was not. I was a werewolf, and soon I would be a vampire too.
Hannah! Oh my god! She's been bit and is turning in her wolf form! Embry's voice shouted from somewhere. Hannah! Hang on!
I suddenly heard more voices in my head. I saw flashes of images as the wolves rushed my way. I saw another form of thoughts as Quil and a very muscular vampire chased after Victoria through the woods. She was cackling with thrill. She had succeeded and hurt the pack. She got her revenge.
More fire shot through me again. I whined and clawed at the ground. My wolf body was on its side and I could hear the frantic heart in me pound painfully.
"Hannah! I'm sorry! I don't know what to do," Alice cried. She was nearby and in distress as she watched me writhe in agony: my insides felt like nonstop flames were eating the inner parts of my flesh.
I could feel another sensation though. As the fire raged, I felt a rush of coolness as something inside me fought back. Fire and ice. Vampire versus wolf. The cold hit the hot, and while I burned one moment I cooled the next. My wolf teeth were still grit but my whines had ceased.
Jacob arrived in the field. I saw in his mind what the scene before us really looked like. Alice was standing a few feet away from me, her eyes full of nothing but despair. I was laying in the grass on my side, my snow white wolf form still pawing at the ground and my pointed ears pressed to my head as the pain continued. I could see I was not as large as the other werewolves. While they stood over five feet, I was probably a foot shorter. I was smaller than Brady. I was the shortest of the pack by a long shot.
The voices were still in my head, but I was more focused on the change inside me. Another clash of heat and ice hit, and this time it was at the valve of my heart. I whined again and shut my eyes harder.
No… I had to stop it. I could sense in me that the venom was trying to poison me and my wolf genes were fighting back. I knew that the goal inside me was for one to kill the other. My human part of me was pressed away, protected by the wolf. The venom was mad because it couldn't find the vessel it wanted. It hit my heart again. The wolf genes hit it back.
No… I knew I would die if this kept up. I could feel the venom slicing at my heart like burning coals while the ice tried to simmer the heat and seal the damage. The voices continued, and I could hear more wolves had arrived in the area. So had some of the Cullens.
"No! Please! Don't leave me Hannah! Please don't."
Seth… it was Seth's voice that suddenly awoke the human inside me that had gone dormant. The venom hissed, sensing the human awakened, and attacked another part of me that started to emerge. The ice followed. The battle continued, but my damaged heart still beat.
"Rosalie, Jasper, and Esme are with Bella," Edward suddenly said as he answered an unspoken question. "They took her back to the house."
Bella… human Bella…
I wanted to be human again. I didn't want to feel the fight inside me anymore. The ice and fire crashed into each other repeatedly, and my human self was jerked all around. The pain was calming though as the venom was distracted.
Stop! I begged the monsters in me to stop their fight. My human self was trying to escape the grasp of the venom.
No! I want to stay human!
The venom let out a final roar as it raced through me again, leaving what was still human and shooting instead to my bones and other parts it could find to hide away. The ice tried to chase it, but it was too slow and instead stopped the chase and raced to my heart again to protect the organ of my life. My human self stayed safe, however it was tired and sore from the battle it had endured.
As things calmed inside me, I felt my heart slow and the pain ease. The venom burned for a moment more, but then like snow falling on a campfire the fire evaporated as it settled into my bones and tissue. The ice remained at my heart, the wolf part of me satisfied by the victory. My human self climbed back to the surface.
The voices of the other wolves became clear again, and I saw through their eyes as my wolf form started to sink away. My body stayed curled up, but I could feel my hands and feet return as the voices faded away. I knew I was naked as my human form came back, but I was too tired to really care. I could still sense the venom in me, but it was calm. The ice had scared it enough to protect me from the pain. My human self soared again inside me. My heart was tired though and pounded slowly.
Something warm draped over my body. As I felt my energy was spent, I let my head rest on the forest floor. Exhaustion finally took me over.
