Chapter 13
Sam pulled the Impala up the driveway and stopped at the house before shutting off the engine. He rubbed his hands down his jeans legs as he sat there not sure why he was nervous. Sam liked Mama Edeline, but he was still unsure of himself and what she might want him to do. He shook his head and pushed his doubts away as he got out and walked toward the door. He knocked and waited for her to answer.
"Hello young man," Mama Edeline greeted him once she had the door open.
"Good morning," Sam replied and stepped into the house when she pushed the door wider to allow him inside.
"How did your weekend go?"
"Well, I worked on my psychometry power since Dean was there. The first time I accidentally did it I couldn't break the connection and Dean had to help me get out of the vision. Missouri had me read a happier memory from a personal object and that helped. I was able to do it twice and got out myself. So, I guess it's getting easier and I'm learning control."
"That is good Sam. Tell me, when you say Dean helped you out of the first one, what did that feel like?" she questioned.
Sam leaned back against the couch and thought about it, trying to pull up those memories to answer.
"It was like…I'm not sure how to describe it…Like I got an extra boost in power and was able to break the connection, I guess. He broke the hold it had on me."
"Interesting dear. Would you mind going and letting Elias in, he's been outside for a while."
"Sure, is there anything else I can do to help out?"
"His food is in a cabinet by the sink, if you would put out a scoop and be sure he has water."
"Okay, I'll be back in a few minutes." Sam got up and by the time he got into the kitchen he heard Elias yip at the door wanting in. He opened the door and smiled down at him reaching to scratch his ears. "Hello fellow, are you hungry?" Sam opened the cabinet and found a bag of dog food. He put out a scoop and refilled his water bowl before leaving him in the kitchen and joining Mama Edeline back in the living room.
"How are you doing on astral projection dear?"
"It's easier, but I still can't make myself be seen," Sam answered.
"Have patience young man, you have accomplished so much in such a short period of time. You should be proud of it. It will come as you grow stronger."
"Thanks for the vote of confidence. I hope I can live up to it," Sam said shyly, he wasn't used to being praised like this especially for what some would think was bad.
"So, young man, is there something you want to work on?" she asked him, wanting him to feel like he was in control. She seemed to sense that he wasn't always allowed this option, since he habitually followed Dean's lead, and knew it upset him sometimes when he was not allowed to make choices for himself.
"Gee, I don't know," Sam replied as he mulled that over for a moment.

Dean was in the kitchen waiting on Missouri, after he gave Sam his keys to drive to Mama Edeline's to meet with her. He poured another cup of coffee and looked up when Missouri joined him.
"Are you ready to begin Dean?" she asked.
"I guess," Dean shrugged. "Where do you want to do this?"
"It's a nice day, would you like to sit on the deck?"
"Sure, fresh air will be good. Do you want a cup of coffee?"
"No thank you, I'll fix a cup of tea. Go on out and I'll join you shortly."
"Alright." Dean opened the back door and stepped out onto the deck, looking around at the new day. He set two chairs on either side of a small table for them to use and sat down. The air was full of noises of the day creatures that were out and about during this time.
"Why thank you Dean, this is perfect," Missouri offered when she saw he had fixed a place for them. "How are things going with Mama Edie?"
"She's an unusual person and gifted. She's helping me learn how to access what powers I have, so I think they're going okay."
"That is good to hear. How are you holding up? Any problems with anything?" she asked. "I know you haven't had a lot of time to digest what happened to you and how you are now, changed from what you were."
Dean let out a slow breath as he thought about the questions. He couldn't say there were problems, maybe some speed bumps, but not really problems. They were only into their second week of training now and he thought Sam and him were doing pretty good. They were training and learning what their limits were and how to make the most of what each had been thrown at them.
"You know, I haven't really thought about it since I've been back. I mean, once I got my body back, I had to take care of Sammy and get him off the demon blood. And that was my number one priority. I didn't really think about myself and still haven't. I guess the way I look at it is what happened can't be changed and this is the new me now. I'm learning how to live with it and use it to my advantage. Sammy and me, well, neither of us are the same person we were six months ago. We'll find our place in this world again and kick it in the ass. Excuse me for that."
"I'm glad to hear that Dean. Sam is going to need all the support he can get as his powers come out. As I told Sam, you need each other to get through this. You are each other's anchors and a shining light in a sea of darkness. Sam supports you as much as you do him, and you balance each other. Alright, enough of this. What were you working on last week?"
"I was trying to move from one place to another," Dean told her.
"And how did it go?"
"It was a bust. I couldn't even move an inch," Dean huffed. "Sammy said I was trying too hard."
"Sam may be right honey. You can't force it. You have to allow it to come naturally. Now, stand up and let's see if we can work on it."
"Okay," Dean said getting up and standing about six feet in front of Missouri. He shook his body and got ready to try and move.
"Just relax Dean and think about what you want to do. Picture it in your mind, maybe that'll help. You just want to hop a few feet. I doubt that you'll be able to go very far since you are limited. It's just a snap of your fingers and boom, you at there."
"Picture it, you can do this," Dean mumbled to himself as he raised his hand and fixed his fingers to snap them.

"When you get to where you want to go, try to focus your powers on making yourself corporeal. You still won't be able to interact with anyone, but they should be able to see you and hopefully hear you," Mama Edeline explained to Sam. "Why don't you try it."
"Alright," Sam nodded. He drew in some slow, even breaths and after a few minutes, he pulled away from his body and drifted out to stand by the couch. He looked down at his limp body and studied it for a moment noticing he was barely breathing.
"That is good young man, I see you have that part down with no problems," she praised him.
Sam looked over at the older woman wondering how he was seeing him do anything. He looked down to Elias who was sitting on his haunches and was watching Sam. He looked from Sam's body to where he stood now, and Sam got the feeling Elias was Mama Edeline's eyes.
"Try going somewhere and see if you can become more solid."
Sam pictured the only place he wanted to go and brought his brother to mind. Before he knew it, he was standing on the deck at Missouri's where Dean was standing near the steps. Sam watched him with interest, wondering what he was doing.
Dean wanted to do this, just once at least, and he touched the demon inside of himself, pulling on his powers as he snapped his fingers. He opened his eyes quickly when suddenly he was unbalanced and found he was standing at the steps with one foot on the deck and the other in the air, throwing him off balance. Dean's arms flew out as he grappled for the railing to keep falling down the steps.
"That was good honey," Missouri clapped her hands. "But I think you need to work on your landing."
"Shit!" Dean cried out as he caught the post before falling backwards on his bottom.
Sam watched all this happen in slow motion as Dean saved himself and started to grab him but realized he couldn't do that. He started to laugh as Dean pulled himself back onto the porch and straightened up, getting himself under control.
"That was close, but I did it," Dean gushed out. "Sammy?" Dean asked when he saw a shadow standing by his empty chair that looked a lot like his brother.
"That's good Sam, you've almost got it," Missouri told Sam, smiling up at him.
"Where did he go?" Dean asked when the shadow was suddenly gone.
"I think you got him distracted with your sideways shuffle," Missouri laughed. "You were so graceful honey."
"Crap, he'll never let me forget this either."
"I think maybe you should try out in the yard where there is less likely to be an accident."
"Yeah, good idea," Dean said stepping from the deck to the backyard where he tried to make himself hop again.
Sam was trying to get his breath as he dropped into his body laughing hard. It took him a moment to get himself under control and looked at Mama Edeline who was looking at him with her head cocked sideways.
"Wherever you went must have been a fun place," she commented.
"I went to Missouri's and Dean was practicing moving from one place to another. He actually did it and almost fell off the deck," Sam chuckled. "It was hilarious. I think they saw me for a moment and then I got too distracted by Dean's antics."
"Good, why don't you try moving to the backyard and back a few times and try to work on becoming corporal."
"Alright."
"After that you can walk Elias and we'll try something different."
"Sounds good." Sam got serious and did as requested letting his spirit leave his body once again. It was getting easier each time he did it and he didn't have to think about it as much. Things were starting to come as second nature to him, and he was pleased with his progress. He was also thinking of ways to tease Dean about his fancy footwork.
A/N: The training is moving along, and the guys are learning new skills and their limitations. Thanks for taking this journey with me. I do love reviews. NC
