Amelia slept fitfully during the flight. She was awoken by one of the men roughly shaking her telling her to get ready. She looked around and saw the others all stirring too. The men were looking out of the window looking concerned.
"WE GOT CRANKS." One of them screamed into his walkie-talkie, she couldn't hear the response. They landed roughly and the men grabbed them each by the arm and pushed them out of the helicopter and towards a building. She ran with Newt as the doors the building opened, more men funnelled out of the doors and starting shooting at something behind them, she put her head down and ran faster. The door was slammed shut behind them and they were suddenly in a massive hanger. The men pushed them further into the building and through a small door in a room. "Stay here until we have the situation under control." And with that they were locked in the room. Thomas and Amelia both immediately started hammering on the door to be let out but stopped when they heard Frypan mutter an astonished 'whoa'. They turned around to see a table laden with more food than any of them could remember seeing. Manners went out of the window and they all started shovelling as much food as they could into their mouths. Having had their fill they sat (or lay depending on how much they had eaten) waited to be let out.
Amelia sat opposite Thomas and Theresa perched in between Newt's legs as he leaned against a table. Thomas's brow was furrowed as if he was deep in thought as he stared at the door.
"You ok Tommy?" Newt asked.
"Who do you think they are?" The boy questioned eyes never leaving the door.
"I dunno. But they've fed us better than we've eaten in three years so I'm up for giving them a chance." Newt responded rubbing Amelia's arm. She tilted her head up to smile at him but stayed quiet. She wasn't quite as trusting as he was and like Thomas she wanted a bit more information before she made her mind up. A creek came from the door as it opened flooding the room with light from the corridor, the Gladers all jumped to their feet as a new man entered.
"Sorry to keep you waiting, but we had a bit of a swarm on our hands." The man looked them all over. "Come with me lets get you settled." They followed behind him as he led them through the building.
"You can call me Mr Janson. You're lucky we found you when we did, we got you out before WCKD could find you."
"What is this place?" Thomas pushed.
"A waystation of sorts, a sanctuary. You won't be here long, we'll be moving you on as soon as we can."
"Are you taking us home?" Thomas, again, spoke.
"No, I doubt there's anything left of where you came from, no we're taking you somewhere safe, a refuge where WCKD will never find you again. How does that sound?" He turned and gave what Amelia assumed he thought was a friendly smile but looked more sinister than that.
"Why are you helping us?" Minho asked.
"Lets just say the world is in a bit of a precarious situation right now. The fact that you kids can survive the flare virus means that you are the best chance at humanity's continued survival. Unfortunately, it also makes you a target, as no doubt by now you've noticed." He swiped a card at a door opening it. "Through this door is the start of your new lives. First things first, lets do something about that smell."
Amelia couldn't remember the last time she had felt so clean. The shower in the glade had been a bucket of cold water attached to a pull cord, the one she'd just had however was amazing. She left the cubicle and discovered that her clothes from the glade had been replaced by some clean ones. She walked out and over to the others between Newt and Minho.
"You smell funny." Minho sniffed the air. "Sort of lemony?"
"I smell clean Minho, and for the first time in three years I washed my hair with actual shampoo instead of the shitty soap they gave us in the glade." Amelia rolled her eyes at him.
"I think you smell lovely." Newt supplied and was greeted by fake gagging from Minho, Frypan and Winston.
"You have to say that lover boy." Frypan laughed and then grimaced when Newt hit him about the head. He was about to retaliate when a door opened to their right and they were ushered in and each taken to a cubicle where they were looked over by a medic.
"Wait, what is that?" Amelia heard Newt ask from the other side of the cubicle.
"Just a little cocktail. Calcium, vitamins A through Z, pretty much everything you guys have been deprived of out there. Try to relax." Came the reply. She didn't have to wonder what he was asking about for long as her medic turned to her with a large syringe full of orange liquid and she grimaced as she was injected. Thomas was in the cubicle opposite her watching Theresa who seemed to being dealt with separately.
"Ok, all done, you can go now, some one will take you to join the others." Amelia's medic told her. She hopped up and moved over to the rest of the Gladers, and they were led down a corridor and through several double doors to a canteen. A canteen full to the brim with other people. They earned a few looks as they entered and went and sat on a table next to a group of guys.
"You guys new?" One of them asked as they sat down.
"What do you mean new?" Newt asked sceptically.
"Did you just get out of your maze?"
"You were in a maze too?!" Frypan exclaimed, Amelia had forgotten that neither he nor Winston had been present when Thomas had confessed about the other mazes and his involvement in swapping Amelia. The thought of Thomas made her realise that he was not part of their group.
"Hey, where's Thomas?" She asked the other Gladers.
"That guy wanted to talk to him, yanno the one that told us we smelt." Minho shrugged as he turned to the guys from the other maze clearly unconcerned.
"He'll be fine Ames." Newt reassured her before something caught his eye behind her. "See, here he is now." Sure enough Thomas was walking towards them and sat down, catching Amelia's eye he shrugged as if to say everything was fine.
"Hey Thomas, these guys were in another maze listen." Minho said excitedly.
"Was it just the one girl in your maze?" One of the guys asked leering slightly at Amelia. She grimaced and leant purposely into Newt who chuckled slightly beside her.
"For three years it was just Ames, then Theresa came up." Newt responded.
The guy faltered slightly in his leering and looked shocked, "Wait? You've been in your maze three years?" They nodded at him. "Shit that's horrible. Our first guy got there ten months ago, we thought we had it bad." Amelia wasn't shocked by this, this many mazes she guessed they all had different start dates.
"Have you guys been here long?" She asked trying to get a bit more information.
"A couple of days. That kid over there's been here the longest, nearly a week." He nodded to a slightly odd looking boy on the other side of the canteen.
"His maze was nothing but girls." Another boy piped up.
"Really?" Minho sounded intrigued and Amelia rolled her eyes at him.
"Yeah, some guys have all the luck." Leering guy replied.
"Good evening Gentleman, Ladies." Janson entered the canteen with a clipboard, the chatter died down as they all listened. "You all know how this works, if you hear your name called please rise in an orderly fashion and join my colleagues behind me where they will escort you to the eastern wing, where your new lives are about to begin." There was some scattered applause from a few of the other mazes but Amelia raised an eyebrow, she couldn't shake the feeling of mistrust she had. She watched as around ten names were called and the owners of the names rose and followed two guards through a set of double doors at the other end of the canteen. There was a disheartened sigh when Janson announced that was all for today.
"Now now don't get discouraged if I could take more I could, but there's always tomorrow, your time will come. Go on eat up." And with that he followed the chosen few out of the canteen. The guys from the other maze turned back towards them looking disappointed.
"Where are they going?" Minho pondered out-loud.
"Far from here, lucky bastards, some kind of farm but they can only take in a couple of people at a time."
Amelia was about to ask more when Thomas jumped up from his seat.
"Hey Theresa! Theresa!" Sure enough Theresa was being escorted past the canteen, she looked around as Thomas shouted her name but disappeared as a door swung closed behind her. Thomas was at the entrance now.
"Where are they taking her?" He asked the guards on the doors.
"Just running some more tests. They'll be done with her soon."
"Is she ok?"
"She'll be fine." The guards voice was final and Thomas walked back over to them. Amelia could tell that he too didn't trust the place they had found themselves. She walked beside him as they were they were taken to their sleeping quarters.
"You don't trust them either huh?" She asked him quietly so that the others didn't overhear.
"There's something odd about this place." He replied before glancing around. "Maybe we're just being paranoid, everyone else seems fine. We could just be crazy people who can't trust a good thing." He grinned down at her and she smiled back.
"Never thought I'd hope to be crazy." She laughed as they came to a stop at a door. One of the guards swiped a card and showed them inside. It was a large room with bunk beds, Amelia found herself staring longingly at a bed suddenly aware of how tired she was.
"I got top bunk!" Frypan called out and made for a ladder, Minho beat him to it however and, bypassing the ladder entirely, hoisted himself up onto the top bunk.
"Too slow." He grinned smugly down at Frypan.
"I could get used to this." Winston muttered as he settled himself down on a bed.
"Yeah, its not bad!" Newt said cheerfully. A loud clanging sound came from behind as they were locked into the room, they turned and looked slightly apprehensively at the door, unsurprisingly none of them particularly enjoyed being trapped inside four walls.
"What do you think they want with Theresa?" Thomas was looking at Newt.
"Look if there's one thing I know about that girl is that she can take care of herself. Don't worry about it." He added at the end, Thomas remained unconvinced.
"Look Thomas maybe its because she's a girl?" Winston supplied.
Amelia raised her eyebrows at the former slicer. "And I'm what Winst? The cats mother?"
"Sorry Ames. I always forget you're a girl!" Winston dug himself further into a hole.
"Will people stop saying that! Its getting quite offensive!" Amelia crossed her arms and pouted as the boys laughed at her. Newt rolled his eyes and pulled her down onto a lower bunk, she let out a grunt as she landed heavily on the bed.
"No funny business please. I do not need to be kept awake by 'oh Newtie' all night." Minho sniggered.
"I have never, nor will I ever, in my entire life, called him Newtie I'll have you all know." Amelia growled.
"I dunno yanno Ames that time I caught you two I think you called him that." The runner fired back clearly enjoying the wind up.
"No I absolutely did not!" "No she didn't!" Both Amelia and Newt cried at the same time.
"Wait? You caught them together Minho?" Frypan's voice sounded from the darkness.
"Yeah it was a horrendously scarring event, one I don't think I will ever recover from." Minho responded dramatically.
"Was she naked?" Frypan chuckled out, Winston laughed loudly.
"Oi Frypan can you stop thinking about my… Girlfriend?" Newt paused questioning the name slightly, they had never actually had to call each other anything before because they hadn't been publicly together. "Naked please. Or I will have to thump you." He finished off as Amelia kissed his hand that was wound around her.
Frypan laughed loudly. "I think the real question is…" He paused for dramatic effect. "Who won the bet?"
"Ah yes! I had two years and a month!." Winston practically shouted back.
"I had fourteen months." Minho added.
"I said that they'd started the moment Newt had come up in the box." Amelia could practically hear Frypans smirk.
"What are you guys bloody on about?" She was getting a bit ratty now.
"We had bets on how long it would take you two to actually get together properly." Winston cheerfully said and Amelia let out a groan as even Thomas joined in the laughter.
"So go on then put us out of our misery!" Winston squawked.
"What's the time frame? Since Amelia was in the maze or I was?" Newt queried and Amelia whacked his chest. "Ouch!"
"Shut up why are you giving them ammo?" He chuckled at her tired and irritated voice.
"Come on love there wasn't exactly a lot of fun to be had in the maze, can't blame them for finding something to interest them." She rolled her eyes but relented slightly. "So time frame?"
"After you came up mate." Minho sniggered.
"In that case, eight months, one month after I did my leg." Newt supplied and Amelia could hear the hint of pride in his voice and smiled despite herself.
"Taking advantage of an invalid Amelia, how very daring of you!" Winston joked and they all laughed as Amelia groaned and pulled the covers over her head.
"So who won the bet?" Thomas asked joining in the fray.
"Out of the three of us Minho was closest but I think Alby might have actually had eight months yanno." Winston said and a wave of quiet fell over the group as they remembered their fallen leader.
"So you two having been doing the do for two years then!" Frypan interjected into the silence trying to bring the conversation back onto happier things.
"Right I think that enough from you shanks. Shut up and go to sleep." Newt cut the conversation off good naturedly and snuggled down next to Amelia.
"Can't believe you told them." She whispered but couldn't help but smile.
"We'll never hear the end of Minho winning that damn bet." Newt grinned at her and kissed her quietly before pulling her against his chest. Amelia's eyes got heavier and heavier until she eventually fell asleep.
They were awoken in the morning by the door opening, blinking rapidly Amelia's eyes adjusted to the light and she saw Newt sat on Thomas's bunk with Minho talking quietly. Newt smiled at her when he saw she was awake and caught her up with the conversation.
"That kid who's been here the longest climbed through the vent last night and showed Tommy something weird." He looked sceptical as he spoke.
"What do you mean by weird?" Amelia pondered before jumping slightly. "Wait Tom you climbed into the vent with some kid you don't even know without telling us! Don't be a prat!" She threw her shoe at the brunette and he dodged it easily looking sheepish.
"I'm sorry, I didn't want to trouble any one, I wont do it again." He added catching her stern impression.
"Make sure of it. Anyway what did you see?" Curiosity got the better of her.
"They took someone in on a stretcher, they were covered up but apparently they move a few in every night." Thomas told her eagerly.
"But you couldn't see them?" Amelia asked unsure of what use the information really was.
"No but it could be something?" Thomas looked at her with desperate eyes clearly seeking someone to be in his corner.
"Well, we can't really do anything with could be's." Amelia began and Thomas visibly deflated. "But I agree its odd, we'll keep an ear to the floor and see if we can find out anything else." Thomas smiled at her and Newt raised an eyebrow, she shrugged at them both before going to shower.
They spent the day asking the other maze kids for any information they had at all but they all had very similar stories. It seemed that most of them had been pulled out of their mazes and brought here, the Gladers seemed to be the only group to have actually escaped before the were found. Thomas was clearly unhappy that they had been unable to gleam any more intel and at dinner that evening had pushed around his food gloomily instead of actually eating. Janson had entered shortly after they'd finished eating and called the names of another few kids to be taken to the supposed sanctuary.
"I wanna know what's through that door." Thomas said determinedly staring at the door which the chosen kids were going through.
"Now, we've been over this." Newt sounded irritated at this point, "You said they were covered up so you don't know what you saw. It could have been anything under there."
"I know exactly what I saw. They were bodies." Thomas retaliated. "Aris said they bring in a new batch every night."
"Who the hell is Aris?" Minho asked equally fed up of Thomas's constant suspicion. Thomas nodded over at the kid in question. Amelia fought the urge to laugh. Aris was sat on his own examining an apple in great detail, not exactly a convincing ally.
"Well, I'm sold." Sarcasm dripped from Minho.
"And last but not least David. Thank you for your attention, enjoy the rest of your evening." Janson lowered the clipboard he was reading off and turned and followed the kids through the doors.
"Okay until we know anything for certain we should just keep our heads down and try not to draw any attention to ourselves, alright?." Newt said diplomatically. Amelia couldn't help but agree, she didn't trust anything about this place so she preferred to keep out of the limelight for the moment. Thomas however seemed to disagree. He jumped up and walked purposely towards the doors.
"What's he doing?" Newt sounded frustrated.
"I think he's drawing attention to himself." Amelia replied watching as Thomas was stopped by a guard, unable to hear what was said she assumed the guard had reminded him that his name hadn't been called. Thomas turned around and Amelia breathed a sigh of relief that immediately turned into a gasp when Thomas suddenly made a bolt for the doors. The Gladers all jumped to their feet and ran to his aid as the guards pushed him. Newt grabbed hold of Thomas and pulled him back as Janson came back through the doors and looked at them incredulously.
"What's happening here? Thomas, I thought we could trust each other. You know we're all on the same team here." Amelia grimaced as he spoke, she did not trust the guy one bit.
"Are we? Thomas rivalled back. Janson looked at them all and turned to the guards behind him.
"Get them to their bunks." One of the guards grabbed hold of Thomas and the other caught Amelia's arm roughly and pulled her back through the canteen entrance.
"Get off her!" Newt shouted and he was pushed hard by the guard holding Amelia. They rounded a corner and were shoved unceremoniously through the door to their room and all groaned as it was locked behind them. The boys rounded on Thomas.
"What the hell was that about?" Minho sounded throughly annoyed.
"You didn't really think they were just gonna let you through?" Newt clearly wasn't impressed either.
"Nah course I didn't." Thomas reached into his pocket and pulled out one of the cards the guards and Janson had been using to get through doors. Amelia laughed, he was damn persistent they had to give him that. "I'm gonna find our what's on the other side of that door."
"Right okay." Newt nodded but continued to look sceptical.
"Newt they're hiding something okay? These people are not who they say they are." Thomas insisted.
"No, Thomas you don't know that!" Newt finally snapped. "The only thing that we do know is that they helped rescue us from WCKD. They gave us new clothes, they gave us food, they gave us a proper bed! Some of us haven't had that in a long time." Thomas tried to interrupt but Newt cut across him. "Some of us A LOT longer than others." He squared up to Thomas. Amelia moaned, none of this was helpful. Before she could interject however the vent suddenly flew across the room. The kid from the canteen appeared and looked expectantly at the group.
"Thomas, you got it didn't you?" Aris asked and Amelia looked at him impressed, the kid was smarter than he looked.
"Yeah. Yeah I got its lets go." Thomas raised the key card up and turned back to Newt. "Look maybe you guys are right maybe I'm just being paranoid. But I gotta find out for sure." And with that he followed Aris into the vent. Newt turned around to say something to Minho but was distracted by a hand hitting the back of his head, hard.
"OW! Amelia what the hell?!"
"That wasn't nice!"
"What wasn't nice!?" Newt held his hands up in surrender at the tiny girl.
"Throwing the 'we've not had a bed longer' comment at him!"
"But its true!"
"I know its true but it still wasn't nice! He's trying to help us. Look I don't necessarily agree with the way he's going about it but I think he's onto to something. I don't trust this place either okay?" Amelia half yelled.
"Okay okay I'm sorry!" Newt replied. "I just don't want to believe that this isn't a good thing." He sighed and sat on their bunk.
"I know what you mean mate." Minho said from his bunk. "This is the first proper bed I can remember, ever. I don't want to believe that it might be the last because we've ended up somewhere worse than the maze."
"Me neither." Frypan spoke quietly and Winston nodded his agreement.
"I don't either guys, and I don't think Thomas does as well. But something isn't right here and we just need to let Thomas do his thing and hopefully he'll keep his head on straight enough to not do anything too stupid." She sat next to Newt and squeezed his hand tightly. She hoped and prayed that hers and Thomas's suspicions were wrong.
She didn't have long to wait to find out.
