A month later Nora's doctor felt comfortable releasing her. They had stopped trying medications because they were really affecting her balance and making her sick. She told them they would have to find another way because she didn't want to try anymore.
"Mrs. Crane, your husband is here," one of the orderly's announced when they came into her room. "Do you need a wheelchair?"
"I don't think so, but I could use some help with my shoes."
The orderly put Nora's shoes on for her and helped her to stand. "I'll take your luggage for you." The young woman helped Nora make her way to the main lobby. Frasier smiled when he saw his wife. Once she reached him, he pulled her into a hug, "my word, how I have missed you."
"I've missed you too."
Frasier took Nora's bag and walked with her out the door. She walked out and saw her children clapping and cheering, "wait to go, mom!"
"What's all of this?" Nora smiled as Frasier helped her down the stairs. All of the children ran to hug their mother.
"We wanted to make sure you knew right away how proud of you we are," Tony said.
"You're going to make me cry," Nora said.
Henry took his mother's bag from his father. "What do you say we go home?" Frasier walked his wife over to the car and helped her in. She looked in the rearview mirror and saw her kids get into their van and Tony was driving. "You're not the only one who made progress," Frasier said and kissed his wife before driving her home.
Nora was in the kitchen working on dinner and her boys were at the kitchen table working on homework.
"Could one of you help me for a second?" Nora was working on asking for help instead of trying to do everything on her own.
Henry stood up, "what do you need?"
"I need to finish cutting these vegetables, but my hands are too shaky and I almost cut myself."
"How should I cut them?"
"Just make them the same size as the ones I already cut."
"Hey, Tone, mom needs to sit!" Henry yelled.
Tony got up and went to his mother, "I'm fine," she said.
Tony looked at her hands, "Yeah, I don't think so. Listen, we are basically done so why don't we finish dinner while you rest?"
"How are you going to finish?"
"Were you following a recipe?"
"Yes, but..."
Tony had his mother sit on one of the kitchen chairs, "why don't you sit here and we'll ask you if we need help. Let us know if you need anything."
"I can't stop you can I?"
"Nope," Tony said and kissed his mother's cheek before walking away.
"Can I at least have my cane?"
"So you can get up and walk around when you should be resting?" Charlie yelled, "I don't think so."
Nora sighed but smiled when Tony brought her phone to her.
The girls cleaned up after dinner since their brothers cooked.
Frasier and Nora were in their bedroom looking up alternative treatments for Nora on the computer when Tony walked in.
"Can I talk to you both for a second?" Tony asked.
"Of course," Nora said as she turned off the monitor.
"I want to tell you why I was avoiding mom. I felt responsible for mom getting hurt and not being able to protect her and thought my trying to get her out of the car caused more harm. I know now that's not the case, but while I thought that way it was too difficult to see mom hurting and struggling so much. I'm sorry."
Nora stood and hugged her son, "it's alright," she rubbed his back, "I felt that I had neglected to protect you too."
"We good?"
"We're good," Nora smiled and Tony helped her sit. After Tony left, Frasier began rubbing his wife's back and the two smiled at one another.
Nora had asked her husband to not say anything to Frederick about what she had told him the day she checked into rehab. He honored her wishes, but he also found a way around it. One day the doorbell rang and Nora went to answer it.
"Frederick, Meg? Come in," Nora let the couple in, "your father is on a conference call."
"That's okay, we're here to see you," Frederick said.
Nora was a bit shocked and nervous, "well then let's go into the kitchen and sit. I'm sure Meg needs to get off of her feet. It's easier to stand up from the chairs at the kitchen table." The three went and sat at the table, "so what's up?"
"We owe you an apology," Frederick said. "We hadn't realized that we ignored you after our announcement at the party. We've been so busy and overwhelmed, but that's no excuse."
"I'm going to kill your father. I told him not to say anything to you."
"He didn't, Tony did."
"How did?" Nora stopped and then chuckled, "oh, he's good. I told him not to tell you and he goes to tell the son who was in the crash with me so he could tell you and I wouldn't be able to be mad."
"Mama, why didn't you tell me how much you've been struggling? You always taught me to not hold my feelings in," Frederick took Nora's hand in his. Nora and Frasier had kept Nora's suicide attempt a secret from Frederick. He didn't even know she had been in a mental health facility.
"I talked to my doctor at the center about that because I couldn't understand it myself. You see, I have felt guilty about your brother struggling with his emotions and mental health after the accident. I couldn't protect him from that, but I could protect him from what I was going through. I didn't feel right burdening my children with all of this. I should have talked to your father about it more. I'm sorry."
"You don't have to apologize," Meg said.
"Yeah, we're all just glad that you got help because we really do need you in our lives." Frederick leaned in to hug his mama. "Now," he said after the hug, "what should your grandchild call you?"
Nora's face lit up, "have your mother's decided?"
"My mom and dad are going with Meemaw and Papa," Meg said.
"Mom is going with Nana," Frederick told her.
"What about your dad?"
"Grandpa," Frederick answered. "Can I put you down for 'grandma'?"
Nora laughed, "yeah, 'grandma' sounds perfect."
"You're going to be an awesome grandma," Frederick told her.
"I appreciate the sentiment, but I don't think that's true."
"Why not?" Frederick was confused.
"Well, I can't really do anything with the child or any children. I won't be able to hold or carry the baby and I can't play with them or do anything that grandmas do with their grandchildren."
"You're going to get depressed again aren't you?" Frederick was worried.
"No, I'm working through that, but it's true." Nora got up and left the room leaving Frederick and Meg behind feeling guilty.
