Chapter 14: Velvet
Perhaps if Coco hadn't put her machine gun in her purse, it wouldn't have been so heavy.
"I'm going to see if we can get moved up to first-class," Coco announced when they arrived at the gate. She flipped her hair as she turned to Velvet, handing her the purse. "Can you watch this?"
"Sure," Velvet smiled, but the second Coco handed her the purse, she was dragged to the floor by its weight. Panting, Velvet pulled it up and rested it on a chair. She looked around anxiously, hoping no one had seen that.
There were two other girls already at the gate, staring out the window at the massive plane in anticipation. Velvet thought about going up to them and saying high, but she wasn't sure what she would say. What if they made fun of her ears?
"Come on, Yang! We're going to be late!"
Velvet turned to see a short girl in a red cape pulling her golden-haired companion to the gate.
"Ruby, give it a rest," Yang laughed. "I'm always late, it's part of my charm. You don't want to mess with my charm and ruin my chances with Prince Jaune, do you?"
Ruby grumbled. "You're so slow." She turned and saw Velvet, who smiled nervously. Ruby gasped, her hands flying up to her cheeks. "Hi!" she cried, exploding into rose petals and reappearing next to Velvet. "I'm Ruby Rose, and this is my sister, Yang,"
"Wassup," greeted Yang, leaning over to wave hello.
"And this," Ruby pulled out her sniper rifle and turned it into a scythe, "is Crescent Rose,"
"Whoa! That's a great weapon!" Velvet pulled out Anesidora and snapped a quick picture. "Just in case," she thought.
Ruby hardly noticed. "I know! Isn't she beautiful?" She cuddled the blade of the scythe close to her face. "Crescent Rose is my baby… She's so amazing, and she can-"
"So, what's your name?" Yang asked, knowing that once Ruby started cuddling her scythe, it would be a long time before she came back down to Remnant.
"Velvet," Velvet smiled, as Ruby continued fangirling over her weapon.
"Oh, sweet! You're that Faunus girl, yeah?"
"That's me…" Velvet muttered, scratching the back of her ear in embarrassment. "Here it comes," she thought.
"And who exactly are you?" asked a new voice
Velvet turned to face the speaker. A girl with long black hair, amber eyes, and a bow on top of her head stood behind Velvet with her arms crossed. Another girl with a ponytail stood beside her, glaring at Yang.
"I'm Yang," Yang said, not noticing their hostility. "You might have seen me on the Report. The profile picture I sent in was of my dog, Zwei, but I guess they found an actual one of me to use for the show. I like punching things," she punched one hand into another to demonstrate, "Let's fight!"
"No, thank you," said Velvet quickly, but the black-haired girl seemed to seriously consider the possibility for a second.
"Don't bother, Blake," the girl with the ponytail said, putting a hand on Blake's shoulder and pulling her away. "She's not worth it."
"Was it something I said?" Yang asked, bewildered, as the two girls walked away.
"I'm not sure," Velvet admitted.
Yang shrugged. "Oh well. Some people just don't know how to handle competition," she cracked her knuckles.
Velvet laughed. She was about to ask where these girls were from when a voice yelled at the flight attendant stand, catching her attention.
"That's absolutely ridiculous! Do you have any idea how ignorant you sound? Let me talk to your manager!"
Velvet squeaked. She grabbed the bags and ran over to Coco.
"Can you believe this?" Coco demanded, turning to Velvet. "They say they can't upgrade the flight to first-class because there are Fours and below among us."
"As well as some… unsavory passengers," the woman at the front desk pointed out, raising her eyebrows at Velvet's ears.
Coco's eyes flashed. She flung out her hand. "Purse."
"Oh no,"
"Coco, really, it's not a big deal, it's a two-hour flight, and-"
"Purse, Velvet,"
Velvet laughed nervously, trying to diffuse the tension. "Unsavory passenger might be an accurate description. Do you have any idea how many carrots I ate on the way up here?"
"Now."
Velvet sighed and gave in, handing Coco her two-ton purse. In one, impressive movement, Coco transformed the handbag into a rotary cannon.
Instantly, the girl with the silver eyes appeared beside her. "Oh my gosh," Ruby sang, her pupils dilating to the size of dinner plates. "Is that a Gatling gun?" she swooned. "I love it!"
Coco didn't respond, instead aiming her weapon at the flight attendant. "As far as I see, the only unsavory passenger is you, and I see no reason why you need to be on this plane at all. Upgrade the flight," she ordered menacingly.
The flight attendant panicked, and did as she was told, and, while Ruby squealed over the weapon and Yang tried to approach the girls that had rejected her earlier, Coco turned to Velvet. "Two-hour flight or not, the Adel-Scarlatina clan rides in style."
Velvet tried to hide her smile. Coco was such a dork sometimes…
