Moving Forward ch31
Harry Potter and the naughty nundu
By Teddy R Lupin (3rd yr. Hufflepuff)
Every year since I started Hogwarts, my dad and I go on a boys only trip. Last year we went camping in Canada's Algonquin park. The year before, we went to EuroDisney. This past summer Dad woke me up early one morning and asked if I wanted to go on an adventure.
After a breakfast of Dad's banana chocolate chip pancakes, Dad lead me into the yard and told me to sit on this big crate he had out there. When I asked what was in it he said "gifts".
Five minutes later we were on a very hot Savannah, Dad hit us both with cooling charms and what I later learned was a modified bubblehead charm that doesn't pop when touched. Dad told me to get off the crate, he levitates it and we started walking. We walked for about ten minutes when the hair on the back of my neck stood up. I didn't know what was lurking in the tall grass but I was pretty sure I was it's breakfast.
Dad put down the crate and let go a shrill whistle. The next thing I know he's wrestling a giant spotted cat. The thing was twice dad's size. I thought we were going to die. Then Dad yanks the things right paw out under its left side and it rolls onto it's back.
I am not a Gryffindor. I had my eyes closed. I didn't want to watch my Dad get eaten by that monsterous cat. I stood there in abject terror with my eyes screwed up tight, listening to that monster growling just waiting to meet my mother and father in the hereafter.
Then the giggling started. I cracked an eye open to se my Dad rubbing it's belly and cuddling with the monster.
"Spot, this is my son Teddy. Teddy this is my friend Spot." Dad introduced us.
A nundu has the softest fur of any animal I have ever patted. I also found out it has a rough tongue about the size of my torso.
"So Spot, how did things work out with your lady friend? You got any little Spots running around?"
The enormous cat growled something.
"That many? You got busy. Any babies?" Dad conversed with Spot.
"Well let's go meet your lady. I brought gifts."
The following twenty minutes was the most surreal of my life. Racing across the African Savannah on nundu back. If Dad hadn't taken pictures, even I wouldn't believe it.
We came to a pile of giant boulders and there lounging in the shade was Momma nundu and three baby nundu. Dad levitated his crate down, slid off Spot's back and helped me down.
"Well don't be rude. Introduce us to your family." Dad said to Spot.
That set the nundus off on a series of growls, grunts and meows.
"Teddy this is Spot's mate Mrew, his daughter Mew and his sons Mraw and Grrr. Mrew, Mew, Mraw, Grrr this is my son Teddy. Why don't you four go play while I talk with Mrew and Spot." Dad said.
Well it turns out Grrr is a bit of a momma's boy. Afraid of his own shadow that one. Professor Hagrid you know Dad, any chance to make someone feel better about themselves, dad is right on it.
Dad grabs Grrr's front paws and rolls onto his back holding the paws to his shoulders and starts screaming that the vicious kitty has pinned him. He rolled around in the dirt with Grrr for about five minutes when New and Mraw wanted in on the action and pounced him. It was hilarious.
Meanwhile, while Dad and I played with the kids under Mrew's watchful eye. Spot broke open the crate. I heard a bah, then a crunch, then Dad was up like a shot.
"That was for your lady! I brought you the jerky!" And proceeds to beat poor Spot with a rolled up newspaper.
It was an amazing trip.
