Throughout the rest of the week, we worked on our sound. For now, we're only going to do covers simply because we aren't ready for originals yet.
Usually, practice ends because Jirou gets irritated with Bakugo. On the nights we didn't practice, Denki still came over to do homework.
Today we get a break from both practice and homework. Today is our beach trip. It's not as warm as it was last weekend but Ochako doesn't think it will matter.
Mio and I rode with Denki, although I'm pretty sure she'd rather ride with Bakugo.
Denki let me pick the music, which gave me a flutter. It might not mean anything but I still think it's sweet.
When we got to the beach, Mio and I followed the rest of the girls into the changing room.
I felt self-conscious, "I should've brought the one piece. Who am I kidding, wearing a two-piece? I'll look ridiculous."
Mio rolled her eyes, "We had this conversation at home. You're wearing shorts and your top has ruffles that cover your stomach, you look amazing."
I sighed and gathered every bit of strength to walk out.
Mio smiled at me, "Besides, the ruffles make your boobs look huge."
My jaw dropped, "Mio! That's it, I'm putting my shirt back on."
She grabbed my arms, "Stop it, come on."
We met up with almost everyone on the sand.
Denki stared as we walked up, I thought I saw a faint color of pink on his cheeks but before I could really look he turned away, "I'm going to the water! Who's with me?!"
I blushed as he pulled his shirt off. Denki shirtless… I never thought I'd see that in a million years and I can't say I have any complaints.
Before I knew it, he, Kirishima, Mineta, Mina, and Momo we're all running for the water.
I looked at Mio, "Was it something we said?"
Mio shrugged, "I don't know, he's a spaz."
I laid my towel under an umbrella and pulled my book out, making myself comfortable.
Mio laid between me and Bakugo, passing out after a while.
"Are you going to spend this time reading?" Tokoyami asked as he sat on my other side.
I nodded, "Oh, yeah, the sound of the waves makes for good concentration."
He laughed before being called over by Todoroki and Deku.
I went back to my book.
Mio sighed after a while, waking up, "Bakugo and I are going to get some food, want something?"
I nodded, "Water, please."
She nodded and followed Bakugo.
I tried to get comfortable again with the book but I shivered from the cold.
We really should've come last week.
"Getting cold over here?"
I looked up, Denki looked concerned as he ran the towel over his dripping golden hair.
I shrugged, "Somewhat."
He walked away and came back a moment later with his jacket, "Here."
I blushed as he wrapped it around me, "Thanks."
He gave me his cheesy grin, "No problem."
His jacket smelled just like him, I took a deep breath. Sunshine after rain.
He sighed, "Man, I love the beach. Are you going to get in the water?"
I shook my head, "Oh, no, I love the sound of the water but I don't go in. There are sharks in that water. Sharks and I aren't friends."
Denki let out a laugh, "There aren't any sharks in the water. Sharks haven't been on shore since before we were born."
I shook my head, "Says you. For all we know, they're just under the water, waiting for someone with delicious blood so they can attack and have lunch."
He continued to laugh, "Please say you're not serious. That is not what's happening."
I shrugged, "Don't come crying to me when you lose a leg to a shark."
He took my book and grabbed my hand, pulling me up, "Come on, just get your feet wet."
I shook my head, trying to pull away, "No, what if I get stung by a jellyfish?"
He took his jacket off of me, tossing it on the towel, "I'll be the one to pee on your leg and make it feel better!"
I shook my head, "No! I'm not going."
I felt the cold come into contact with my feet, "You're already in."
I looked down at the water around my ankles. I felt a bit of anxiety.
"The water feels great!" I heard Sero as Ojiro and Sato tossed him further in the ocean.
I looked up at Denki who had the biggest smile on his face, "Can I walk back now? It's cold and I can feel them staring at me like I'm soba noodles."
He shook his head, "You came to the beach in a bathing suit you have to get in the water, it only makes sense."
I squeezed his hand tightly and took another step in the water. It was definitely refreshing.
"Are you sure there are no sharks or jellyfish?"
He nodded, "I'm sure."
I stood there, kind of enjoying the water, "Can I sit?"
He nodded, I sat down, running my fingers through the soft sand, this feels so different than dry sand.
Denki took a step away and I felt a jolt of panic, "Wait, don't leave."
He smiled as he plopped down next to me, "Have you been in the water before?"
I nodded, calming down, "Yeah, but not since I was younger."
"Why?"
I sighed and looked out on our classmates playing around us, "We used to go after every one of moms' tours. She'd come home, scoop Mio and me up and put us in the car and make dad take the day off and leave his phone at home. She said it was her time with us. She used to walk Mio and me down, hand in hand down the sand and into the water."
"Why'd you stop going?"
I shrugged, "We got older, dad's job became more demanding."
Denki sighed, "I used to come here with my family but we stopped when I was really young. I barely remember it."
I glanced at him slightly, "What kind of parents do you have?"
He shrugged, "They're nice people, pretty good parents. They do their best."
I nodded, bringing my knees to my chest, "How'd they meet?"
Denki let out a laugh, "They actually met at some concert for some oldies band, I don't think they liked each other very much at first but then they ran into each other again at some car show, they're both gear heads and they really hit it off."
I smiled, "That's cute."
He nodded, "What about your parents?"
I felt love in my heart as I drew a heart in the sand, "Dad was working as a security guard through the academy and he was her bodyguard. Believe it or not, my dad was a hard man before my mom. He wasn't the mushy stuffed animal he is now. Mom teased him. She was a beautiful, gentle opera singer with a silly side and he didn't have a sense of humor but he got a soft spot for her.
During one of her performances, someone with a wild idea my mom was in love with him attacked her and dad rescued her. The rest is history. They weren't together for long before marriage and it wasn't much longer after that Mio and I were born."
Denki looked amazed, "Wow, that seems straight out of a romance book."
I nodded, letting out a small laugh, "It does."
"Maki! Denki!"
We turned, hearing Mio calling us, "We're gotta go."
I stood, walking back up the shore, "What's up?"
Mio sighed, "I'm not feeling good, I think it's something I ate, Bakugo will drive me back."
I shrugged, "Well, I'm coming too."
She shook her head, "No, don't worry about it. I'm just going home to rest."
Denki shrugged, "I can take you home, Maki, it's no problem."
I sighed, "Are you sure?"
Mio nodded, "Dad's waiting at home for me with soup."
"Okay," I hugged her, "Feel better."
She walked away with Bakugo.
I sighed, wrapping my arms around myself, I didn't feel too comfortable without her.
Denki took a step closer, "Would you like to go home?"
I looked up at him, should I? It'll make Mio angry.
I sighed, "I don't know."
He shrugged, "Okay, why don't we go get some food and you decide after?"
I nodded, "That sounds good."
Denki and I grabbed our things and I pulled his jacket back over me. We walked down to a dumpling shop not too far from the sand.
Denki rubbed his stomach, "Man, the water makes me so hungry."
I smiled, "It made my mom hungry too, she used to take us to this international buffet in the middle of a shopping center near the beach we went to. It had food from all types of countries. I loved it."
Denki's jaw dropped, "I've never been to one of those. I love foreign food."
I giggled, "I love potatoes."
We ordered our food and made ourselves comfortable at a patio table.
Denki sat back, taking a deep breath, "I'd love to live on the beach someday. Wake up each morning, breathe in the fresh ocean air. Oh! I could learn to fish!"
I couldn't hold in the laughter as I pictured him in those rubber coveralls and net hats with hooks in it.
He frowned, "What? You don't think I can pull it off?"
I shrugged, "I don't think there's much you can't pull off."
He let out a nervous laugh.
I can't believe I said that.
My embarrassment was interrupted when our food arrived.
Denki smiled at the food, "Oh, thank god, I could eat a horse."
I smiled, taking a bite.
As we ate, Denki kept making jokes, making me laugh uncontrollably. He's funny which only makes him more attractive.
After our meal, we walked back to his car. I noticed most of the cars were gone.
I raised my brow, "Did everyone leave?"
He shrugged, checking his phone, "Todoroki texted me, he said everyone is meeting at a ramen shop in the next town over. Wanna go?"
I shook my head, "I think my social battery is pretty low. I can find another ride if you want to go, though?"
He shook his head, "I said I would take you home and I will."
I bit my lip, "Denki, I know you like hanging out with everyone, I can call my dad."
I felt his finger under my chin, making me look at him, "I'd rather ride with you home."
I felt the rush in my heart and the heat in my cheeks, "Uh… okay."
He held the door open for me, "Your carriage awaits."
I sighed as I watched Denki's hands move on the wheel. He's a confident driver and I'm envious over it. He knows what he's doing and he's not hesitant.
Denki glanced at me, "You okay?"
I was surprised he noticed me, "Uhh, I just have a question."
He nodded, "Shoot."
I chewed on my lip, feeling nervous, "Where'd you learn to drive?"
He raised his brow before letting out a soft chuckle, "My mom and dad took turns teaching me. Why?"
I shrugged, "You're a good driver."
He smiled, "Thanks. How much driving have you done?"
I shook my head, "I've driven once with my dad and never again. Cars are heavy and dangerous machines."
He let out a laugh, "They're not that scary, and besides you're in control of the big machine."
I shook my head, "I can't, especially not with my dad."
He raised his brow, "What do you mean?"
I shrugged, "You know the stereotypical mom that panics if the car moves an inch?"
He nodded.
"Well," I sighed, "He's worse."
Denki shrugged, "I could teach you if you'd like."
I was shocked, "Uh… no, I… I can't accept that offer. I don't want to hurt your car."
He shrugged, "If you do, my parents will have it fixed by sundown." He shot me a devilish smile, "I'd love to teach you."
I bit my lip, looking away from that evil smile, "I'll think about it."
The rest of the drive, we listened to music, both of us singing along. I didn't anticipate him singing with me but I really enjoyed it. He got dramatic and to some songs, he changed the lyrics.
I couldn't stop laughing.
His words rang through my mind, 'What I'd give to wake up next to you every morning.'
I don't know if he meant it or if it was a joke but definitely would love it.
Those beautiful amber eyes and I bet that yellow hair with a black stripe would be cute all disheveled.
I can only dream of what that looks like.
