Chapter 12: Questions
Outside the goat's lair, Kipo and the others wait patiently on the patio with glasses of water which Dave filled with a jug, Kipo fidgeting in place as she stares expectantly at the cave entrance as if Spike was about to walk out any second.
"Do you think he's alright? I thought I heard him scream before." Benson wondered as Dave filled his glass.
"Oh, he did. But the goats know what they're doing, so we shouldn't interfere." Kipo reassured, looking unconvinced by her own words while Mandu watched her worryingly before the group spotted the goats exit their lair with a cauldron of cheese.
"Where's Spike?" Benson questioned just as Spike exited the cave as well, everyone going wide-eyed at his appearance as he had slit eyes and all of his limbs had formed into scaly claws as well as grown a tail that dragged along the ground. Spikes clothes and face being covered in cheese while he had a vacant expression as he stares off into the distance with a twitchy eye.
"Umm, Spike. You alright, buddy?" Benson asked, Spike glancing at him with an ominous look as his forked tongue darts out, startling Mandu who hid behind Wolf.
"Yeah, no. He is not alright." Dave stated, drinking from the jug.
"He's fine, we just made him make cheese." Ida said as she places the cauldron over the fire.
"By himself?" Kipo worried with an anxious glance at Spike.
"We set him on fire!" Bev smiled happily, everyone staring at her with shocked looks.
"R-right…so what did you learn?" Benson asked.
"We learned that Spike's powers aren't as natural as Kipo's." Ida informed, getting everyone's attention including Spikes.
"Not natural, what's does that mean?" Kipo asked.
"We don't know, we need to consult the cheese." Florabel replied as the three goats gather around the cauldron before sinking their hooves into the cheese, Spike watching them do this with an irritated look as he hissed out his tongue.
"Oh! They did it again!" Dave cried.
"Such a waste." Benson sighed.
"…..Still gonna eat it though, right?"
"Oh, definitely."
"SHHH!" Wolf shushed the two angrily as the goats began chanting.
"Feta, Gouda, Chevre, Fromage." The goats chanted as they swayed side to side.
"What are they doing?" Spike whispered to Kipo.
"Predicting the future with….the cheese." Kipo paused, getting a look from Spike as the group watched the goats.
"Feta, Gouda, Chevre, Fromage." The goats continued to chant before opening their eyes, their pupils rolling into the back of their heads as their eyes began glowing blue.
"You weren't born with the mutagen like Kipo was. Your powers were given to you only recently and forcefully." Ida explained as the cheese began to mold into the shape of Spike strapped to a table while slowly turning into a komodo dragon, causing the group to gasp.
"I-I transformed into a mega?" Spike stuttered, glancing at his claws "That's good, isn't it? I can change back."
"No." Ida interjected, "The beast within you forced its way out, and plans to try again until it frees itself."
"But after you lost your memories there's been nothing but confusion for both you and the beast." Florabel explained, the cheese changing to Spike and a komodo dragon standing back to back.
"You're both trying to find yourselves. Both trying to remember who you are." Bev continued.
"And the dragon is starting to remember." Ida added as the cheese molded into a scene of the dragon growing larger then Spike before devouring him, causing everyone to flinch.
"You must seek the place where you first became a mega, only there will you find your memories." Florabel stated.
"What about the anchor?"
"Go Home. Go Home." The goats said in unison as the cheese molded into the cliff before molding into a damaged looking house, the image sinking into the cheese as the goat's eyes returned to normal, removing their hooves from the cheese.
"Home?" Spike uttered, exchanging looks with Kipo before turning around and walking away from the group, everyone watching him worriedly before Kipo followed him.
"Spike, wait!" Kipo shouted, running after him into the forest until he stopped, "Just talk to me, please."
"She did this to me…why?" Spike asked himself.
"She?"
"Dr. Emilia!" Spike hissed angrily, "She has to be the one who did this to me! She knew about my powers and she was there when I lost my memory….What else does she know that I don't?"
"I-"
"And what about the anchor?! The sisters didn't explain that part, how am I meant to change back?!" Spike ranted, gesturing to his current appearance as his tail swayed around violently and uprooted blades of grass.
"Spike, I'm sure we can-WHOA!" Kipo cries as Spike's tail smashes through a tree trunk and cause it to plummet towards her, Kipo only narrowly jumping out of the way of the falling tree and avoiding being trapped underneath.
"Kipo! Kipo, I'm sorry! I-" Spike fretted.
"No, it's alright, I'm fine." Kipo assures showing Spike that she was unharmed, "Spike, everything is going to be okay, you just need to calm down."
"How can I?! I only have a short time before the dragon gets his act together and decides to take over and here I am not even sure if my name is Spike, I mean what parent would name their child Spike?!" Spike vented, catching his breath as he slowly calmed down, "….Where do I come from, Kipo?"
"I don't know, but we'll figure this out….together." Kipo reassures softly, taking Spikes hand in hers as she gives him a gentle smile, Spike gripping her hand gently as his body slowly reverted back to human, "See? We're already getting somewhere."
"….Thanks." Spike uttered before being hugged by Kipo.
"You're not alone. Everyone is here to help you, don't forget that." Kipo says, Spike hesitantly returning the hug as the two embraces in silence. Kipo realizing they've been hugging for too long as her cheeks redden, taking a step back with a nervous chuckle, "W-we should probably head back, don't want the others worrying." She flushed with her cheeks reddening.
"Oh, right. Totally." Spike blushed, rubbing the back of his head with red cheeks before the two made their way back to the others.
