Chapter 16

The next morning everyone was up early and had a good breakfast before they headed out for Virginia City.

"OK everyone ready? Let's get going."

Ann and Adam drove the wagon first until they got to Elko. Then stopped to get something to eat and let the horses rest and have water.

"How are you doing sweetheart? You look a little tired."

"It's been a long day so far Adam. How much longer to the next town? Is that where we're going too stop for the night?'

"The next town is Battle Mountain . It's a real small town. I don't even know if they have a hotel there."

"Oh really."

"Don't look so down my dear. We can always camp out when it gets dusk."

"I remember those wonderful camp outs way back when with you."

"Let's keep that our little secret alright."

"Adam, horses are watered and everything still tied down. Ready to go."

"OK, let's go."

It was getting dusk now and they had passed Battle Mountain and it would be way after dark before they got to Winnemuca so they decided too camp out for the night but the way Ann looked now, it might be for two nights.

"Ann, what is wrong with you? Honey, talk to me."

"I don't know Adam. I'm just a bit hungry I guess."

"It's more than that Ann. Come here and sit down for awhile."

"OK, Adam I have to make supper."

"Not until you're feeling better."

"OK OK."

"Pa, Ann isn't feeling well, we might have to camp a couple of nights."

"Whats wrong Adam?"

"Don't know. I told her too just sit down for awhile."

"Well, lets get things set up and get Ann too lay down for awhile."

"Ya, thanks Pa."

"Adam, she isn't with child is she?"

"No Pa, I don't think so. It's to soon to tell. Isn't it?"

"I don't know for sure. How long have you two been together?"

"About three months. But one of those I was gone on the cattle drive. And then a couple weeks on the ranch."

"Well, it only takes once son. At any rate, give it some time. You will be able to tell by the end of the month." Adam had too stop and think about that one for a minute.

"OH ya, I see what you mean pa."

"Takes a while huh?"

"Ha, ha, ya sometimes."

"Ann sweetheart, Pa made some stew. Would you like some?"

"Oh yes, thank you. Oh this is so good."

"He does have his moments. How do you feel now?"

"Better now Adam. I am tired however."

"Your bed is ready. Come on, I'll tuck you in."

"My bed, what about our bed?"

"Mine is right beside you my love. And Pa put up a blanket for privacy for us so you can take off your clothes."

"And you yours?"

"Yes, mine also. Now come on to bed will you."

"Gladly."

The next morning everyone but Ann was up at dawn and packing up. Adam had too check on Ann to see how she was feeling.

"Ann sweetheart, how do you feel this morning? Are you well enough to ride?"

"Adam, yes I think so. Is there any coffee made?"

"Yes I think so. I'll get you some."

"She needs some coffee."

"How is she? Can she ride this morning?'

"I'll see how this goes down."

"Ann, here you go. Try too drink it all."

"Thank you Adam."-"Oh, it taste good."

"You going too be alright now?"

"I think so. Yes, I'll get dressed and be right there."

"Alright sweetheart." Adam gave her a kiss

They managed too get to Winnemuca before dark and they were going too take a hotel room for the night. Adam was going too take Ann to the doctor there but there wasn't one in town. So he was going to ask her tonight if she thought she might be with child.

"Ann, have you noticed a change in your monthly cycles?'

"Adam, why do you ask me that?"

"Have you or haven't you?"

"Well I don't know. No I don't think so. Why?"

"I was just wondering if your feeling ill might be because you are with child."

"OH no. Adam I never thought of that. You have been gone so much how could I be?'

"Sweetheart, it only takes once."

"Yes you're right about that. I don't think so however."

"As soon as we get to Virginia city I'll take you you to see our family doctor."

"Alright Adam."

"Let's go and join the family for dinner OK."

"OK, I am hungry."

"Ah huh."
