Chapter 14
While Mike contended with taking Kaitlyn to dentist and doctor's appointments, getting her hair cut and working on trying to get her a GED, Michelle worked on the house and Tom jumped in to help her. He painted, put furniture together, even 'helped' her decorate. Other friends, including Danny and Kara also jumped in to help.
The house finally came together, and so it was time to fill Kaitlyn's closet and to finally move in. Michelle was able to convince Kaitlyn to go to the store with her, Holly, McKenna, Kara and Sasha. At best, Kaitlyn was indecisive about what she wanted, but she and Holly had become good friends, and Holly had a way of getting through to her.
"How about these jeans? They are a size bigger and pull up rather then buttons or zippers so you can wear them as you gain weight. And these shirts? They are cheaper, but well made, and they come in different colors and styles; so you wouldn't be wearing the same thing all the time." Holly suggested, as she pointed at a shelf with various t-shirts on them.
"I like them, but I get cold so easy." Kaitlyn said.
"We can get you some sweaters and flannel shirts too; and your dad wants you to have a coat of your own." Michelle said.
"I don't want to cost too much money." Kaitlyn said. She had picked a shirt up, and then put it back down when she saw the price tag.
"Those are $12.99 and if we buy three, we get the fourth free; so why don't you pick out four, at least." Michelle suggested.
"And you can mix and match. They have some long-sleeved ones too. Those are all solid colors though." Kara said as she held one up.
"That purple would be really pretty on you, Kaitlyn." McKenna said. Michelle walked over and picked up a purple long-sleeved shirt, along with a dark blue shirt and then one in green and lilac colored.
"Alright, that's four. Let's get you four of the short-sleeved too. Maybe some prints?" Michelle suggested and Kaitlyn nodded.
"I really like the one with little flowers on it." Kaitlyn said. Michelle took it, plus three others with various prints; including stripes. "What about one of those denim jackets?" Kaitlyn asked.
"You can certainly have one, but you are still going to get a good coat." Michelle said as she picked up a denim jacket and put it in the cart. Sasha, Kara and her girls were looking at the clothes to find things for Kaitlyn.
"I know I'm going to be at home a lot, studying for my test, and staying with Daddy. I would really like some comfy clothes too. Those sweats that Holly gave me are so soft." Kaitlyn said.
"We'll get you some of those too, but we want you to have stuff to wear out too." Michelle remarked. Kaitlyn was eying a sweater dress.
"That's really cute." Kaitlyn said as she pointed at the dress.
"Yes, it is. Which color?" Michelle asked.
"I think the dark blue, so it would look good with either brown or black shoes." Kaitlyn said.
"And the denim jacket, but I also think the lighter purple would be pretty too." Michelle said as she put both in her cart.
"Why are you doing all this? I was so terrible to my dad." Kaitlyn asked as Michelle grabbed some leggings and threw them in the cart.
"At one time, yes; but you adore him now and you are keeping him settled. He needs to rest and you are making certain he does that. All I care about now is how you treat him now and that you make amends for what you did say, which you're doing. Your dad wants you to have some stuff of your own, and told me to get you whatever you need." Michelle told her.
"I really regret it. I missed him a lot and I didn't think I would get a chance to make it right." Kaitlyn said.
"He missed you too. Having you back doesn't make losing your mom, sister or brother any easier, but it gives him something to fight for. As much as he loves me and my kids, I was afraid it wouldn't be enough." Michelle answered.
"I am really glad he's had you guys. Mom wanted him to be really happy." Kaitlyn remarked.
"You should tell him that. What about this dress? Kind of like the other ones." Michelle asked.
"Yeah, its pretty. Are you guys going to have any kids of your own?" Kaitlyn asked.
"The subject hasn't come up and right now, neither your dad or I are strong enough for that." Michelle told her. She didn't want to explain to Kaitlyn that they hadn't discussed having a baby, let alone had sex. It was just not that important to them at the moment.
"I guess. I wouldn't mind having another little brother or sister." Kaitlyn said.
"Maybe when things get better. Right now, we have clothes to shop for, a house to move into and your dad has to get back on his feet. Talk of babies later." Michelle gently reminded her.
"Okay." Kaitlyn agreed.
