XI. PEOPLE
THE PRIVATE SESSIONS
LUXANA "LUX" LEBLANC, DISTRICT 1 FEMALE (18)
When Hestia had jokingly asked Lux why she had volunteered, Lux didn't have to think twice about her answer, and neither did she have to think about her real answer either.
I don't want the glory, though I wouldn't hate having some. I don't want the money, I have enough. I just don't want to strain my relationship with my parents.
All the Careers had secrets. Even Lux.
She couldn't bear the thought of what would happen if she told her parents she wanted a normal life. She didn't know what would happen if she hadn't volunteered to kill, which Lux knew she had never wanted to do.
Had Lux grown up in a non-Career district, the district 1 girl would certainly be different. Her parents could be said to have spoiled her rotten. Lux got everything she wanted, but the pressure for winning outmatched wealth sometimes.
Her parents weren't the people who would abuse her if she didn't- just the type to be terribly disappointed, and honestly that was worse to Lux.
She had to live up to their expectations, though she didn't want the cost to be her own life.
Lux was second for her session, after Merlot for the private sessions. Her district partner's confidence was never an act which Lux couldn't say for Hestia or maybe even Tempest. The other Careers were so much of wild cards in Lux's book. They were all so unpredictable and much smarter than the teens Lux had thought she'd be going in with.
To be fair, she thought she'd be going in with idiots.
The Gamemakers were quite literally on the edge of their seats as Lux entered the room, flashing them a genuine smile. It wasn't just to curry favor with them, it was the person she was and would always be.
They said the arena changed you, but Lux couldn't imagine it ever changing her. Even in her teen years, which were almost over one way or another, she'd held onto her sanity just as much as she'd done as a child.
And nothing challenged your sanity like being a teenager.
Flicking on a few buttons absentmindedly, Lux entered the simulation room with high hopes.
Her sword was strong against the golden figures generated by technology, but as she struck them down she felt different than she ever felt at the training center back home.
Lux knew why.
When the electronic figures disintegrated, she imagined Tempest's shocked face as the district 4 girl stared at a wound. Or reserved but opinionated Angelo. Or flamboyant, gender stereotype-bending Merlot. Or proud Hestia who was really gentle if you got to know her. Or fast talking Nero, whose train of thought Lux wanted to learn how to keep up with.
These are my people, these are my friends. How can I kill them?
It didn't matter when the Gamemakers clapped in admiration, or when Lux heard one of them call her "the Capitol's darling" as she left the room.
To be the Capitol's darling everyone else would have to die.
And while Lux had stupid desires just like everyone else, Lux had never been that selfish.
REYENA JENSEN, DISTRICT 10 FEMALE (13)
"Reyena Jensen," Reyena called out to the chattering Gamemakers.
Inside she huffed. They're ignored the next Victor. They're ignoring Panem' future queen.
This thought gave her the courage to yell, "It's me!"
The Gamemakers immediately turned in their seats to see the delusional little girl who had just screamed to grab their attention.
Reyena grinned. "You're well trained!" She clapped her hands together, and the Gamemakers looked dumbfounded. "Good. I show you my skills now, right?"
"Yes!"
"Oh, okay! Great!"
Reyena had to suppress a smirk as she picked up a few throwing knives. Out loud, she mused, "Wait, how do you hold these again?"
One of the Gamemakers huffed in exasperation and turned away and a few others did too. Reyena was pleased.
Perfect.
She was aiming for a lower score to fly under the radar especially since the boy from 2 had seemed suspicious lately of Rey's innocent facade. He was one of the smartest Careers, including the girl from 4, who Reyena absolutely hated.
Some people she just didn't mix with, you know?
Reyena found that Demeter had been getting a little too close to her new ally. They would both have to be disposed of, immediately. Same case with Bailey and Artemis, though Reyena was less concerned about the latter surviving the bloodbath. Bailey was too trusting of her and Reyena could take them out easily.
Hurling the knife, Reyena faked a pout as it completely missed the dummy. "Shame."
A few Gamemakers rolled their eyes and continued chatting, except for a young redhead who looked at Reyena with pity. She shot him a cheeky grin.
Reyena then moved onto the snares. After all, it was easy for one to be too much of a long shot. She rolled up the sleeves of the dumpy training uniform (they were making her break a few nails on the road to her eventual victory, and making her wear terrible clothes if you didn't count the parade, and Reyena had been very frustrated when she found out what she had to wear) and began to work on the snare.
Once the district 10 girl finished making the snare she let her hair loose and as a test, tossed it into the snare.
The cage shut immediately, and the redheaded Gamemaker clapped.
Reyena held her head high as she strode out of the room after being dismissed.
The Careers weren't gonna know what hit them, cause Reyena Jensen had strategized, planned, and was ready to go.
BAILEY BREARMON, DISTRICT 11 "MALE" (17)
Bailey felt their heart racing as they entered the private sessions. Artemis and Reyena had gone before them, and poor Reyena had looked terrified.
Actually, she'd looked just as happy as she usually did.
As much as they hated to admit it, Reyena was going to die in the bloodbath. But Bailey and Artemis were going to make sure that wouldn't happen.
On that subject, Bailey was worried about Artemis. The boy from 10, despite his cheerful demeanor, was hiding something. At times his mood would completely switch and Artemis would brush them off brusquely. Reyena didn't seem to know much more than Bailey did, and she shrugged whenever they asked.
The Gamemakers were rowdy and chattering- but there's four of us left, are they going to watch? they asked themselves.
Bailey stood there awkwardly until a younger Gamemaker gave them an encouraging nod. They cleared their throat.
"Bailey Brearmon, District 11," they called out. They had to wait a second before all the Gamemakers turned in their direction.
"Thank you," they said meekly. Inside they were seething, something just so rare for gentle Bailey. The district 11 kid was actually angry- why did they have to do this? Fifty years were long enough, not just for them but for the younger kids who had to do this too.
Artemis was so creative, and Reyena more brilliant than Bailey could ever comprehend. They were all friends, they knew, and if Bailey was the only remaining one in the bloodbath it would kill them.
They had to keep their friends alive, even if it came at their own personal price.
Maybe that was why Deiondra stayed away from them. She seemed to want something safe, and Bailey couldn't stay safe themselves. They wanted Reyena and Artemis to stay alive, but they weren't sure if he could keep themselves that way.
The few Gamemakers that were watching had a languid air to them, and Bailey felt their heart quicken with the nerves. What do I do? They wondered. Yes, they had a strong, tall build good that should be good with weapons but they hadn't practiced much. Maybe a sickle? Bailey did use one for farming back in 11. Oh, to be safe in the fields again.
They gripped the sickle like it was their lifeline, and in fluid, sharp moves began bashing up the dummy.
Did they have to do this? they wondered. With each strike they felt more nauseous.
Bailey wanted to drop the sickle and refuse to go into the Games but they knew that wasn't an option. They were free to be as stubborn as they wanted at home, but, of course, now they had to be nice for the Capitol. A lapdog, like the Careers were.
Blinding white filled Bailey's vision and with a blast of force the sickle slammed into the dummy, and Bailey stared in horror at the plush, faceless head they'd decapitated.
Now all the Gamemakers were paying attention, but Bailey felt sick. They continued bashing dummies with the sickle, but with less conviction. Their force was still there, but not the feeling.
If the Gamemakers were trying to turn Bailey into an emotionless killer, they might very well succeed when they got to the arena.
TRISTAN SOL, DISTRICT 12 MALE (15)
They wouldn't watch; Tristan knew it even before he walked into his private session, being second to last.
Everyone else in his alliance had come and gone with mixed results. Euan had exited with a large grin on his face, Lyana and Aspen seeming merely indifferent, and Peri's optimism still remained as the room emptied with just the district 12 pair left.
The dark-skinned girl from Eleven rose, fidgeting, as she was called.
Truth be told Peri had become much more positive after they'd met their other allies to the point where she almost tended to be a bit of a doormat with constant compliments.
The alliance was proving much stronger than Tristan had thought it would turn out. Either Peri's brightness was rubbing off on him, or his own had returned, but he knew they stood a chance. If it was them against the Careers, a strong group of five, at least a few of them could survive.
It wasn't selfish to hope that he'd be the one to survive- was it? Tristan was a survivor. Three years of reapings had gone by seamlessly up until now, and he was the oldest kid in his family now, even when disease had wracked it. The Careers never had to deal with worrying if their family would lose a member overnight, he thought bitterly. And bitterness was not something that was common about the district 12 boy.
But there were good things about Twelve too, Tristan thought despairingly.
Name six things you like about your district.
My parents, my siblings, school, friends, Sk-
He stopped. He'd almost said Sky.
See, the Capitol took Sky from you too. Now they're taking your survivor status as well, along with any hope your family has.
Tristan ignored the voice. I can win.
His name was spoken over the loudspeaker, and he felt himself rising out of his seat and walking into the gym if he was in a dream.
He'd known they would ignore him, but it still stung when he saw the Gamemakers crowded over a dish of fish. No! He wanted to scream. Please! I can do this!
There were a few Gamemakers who were still sober and were giving him maybe 75% attention which, to be honest, was more than Tristan could've hoped for.
He started with the snares in a grassy area the Gamemakers had even provided with a few actually live rabbits. Tristan felt sweat drip down his neck as he frantically assembled the snare.
Fingers moving quickly, he tied a last knot. One of the small rabbits wandered over to his trap and stepped onto the plate, nipping onto the grass Tristan had set as "bait". Breathing heavily, Tristan waited to see the rabbit be hung.
It wasn't. Instead its weight turned the snare into some sort of elevator and the rabbit rose into the air on Tristan's snare. Looking fairly bored, it hopped off, still chomping grass.
Shit. Tristan stole a glance at the Gamemakers, who looked amused at his demonstration.
I have to prove them wrong.
This registered only briefly in Tristan's mind, but he stood with conviction and made his way to the weapon station.
Palming a dagger, Tristan let out a breath, silently making a wish that he wouldn't fail. The blade contrasted sharply with his hands, the cold steel burning against his sweaty fingers.
He slashed at dummies with the dagger. He was fighting for his life, he really was. The fact he had to was frustrating enough but Tristan continued until the dummy bore several marks.
The Gamemakers clapped- well, at least a few- and finally excused him. Wiping his brow, only one thought registered in Tristan's mind:
It's going to be ten times harder in the arena.
DULSCHE WILDGAZE, HEAD GAMEMAKER
While most of the other Gamemakers had gotten drunk towards the end of the private sessions, Dulsche had mainly remained sober. Most of all, young Gamemaker Mattias Creed had given the tributes even more attention than his superior.
Dulsche prided herself in being a perfectly organized person who was always ready for anything, which was why she had given her full attention to her tributes.
They were hers, the tributes.
Dulsche snapped her fingers, and an Avox brought forth a notepad. Tesandri was her name, Dulsche vaguely remembered from a file years back, though Dulsche would be lying if she said she cared.
The Gamemakers began to work, and disagreements spouted as Mattias jotted down predicted placings.
By far the most exciting session had been the girl from District 2, but the other Career tributes had also been pretty strong. There had been some highlights from the outer district kids like every year, but then there were some that tended to just blend in with the crowd.
Dulsche had taken a personal interest in a few of the tributes- the boy from 5, the boy from 9, and the girl from 3. Her daughter, Scylla, had been begging to meet Lux from 1 and her son, Achilles, supported Nero from 2. Both twins were only six, so too young to bet, though Scylla had told Dulsche she'd set up a betting ring at her school. Despite the kids's ages, their brains naturally worked faster than others. Achilles had Tourette's syndrome, and was often bullied, but Scylla, the fiercer and bolder of the twins, tended to make the "bullies" learn a lesson.
Dulsche was glad to have an open home where she felt her children could say anything if something was bothering them. When they were in their raw childhood, Dulsche and her husband had adopted the practice of randomly asking their children what they were thinking about. Dulsche therefore always knew when her children were lying to her, and was relieved to know she could trust what her children said.
"People, what are the notes so far?" Dulsche called out over the clamor. Mattias handed her the pad.
Merlot Montague, District 1 Male
Merlot was by far the most exuberant and well-rounded tribute we met during the sessions. While he is currently the favorite with the Capitol, Merlot proved not to be just a pretty face, also boasting exceptional skills with even executioner swords. Some sources in district 1 tell about a brother as well years ago- maybe ask about family life at his interview?
Predicted Placing: 2nd
Score: 10
Luxana Leblanc, District 1 Female
Luxana greeted us with a friendly smile and showed expertise with many weapons, mostly a bow and a spear. She seems slightly overshadowed by her larger than life district partner, especially at the parade, but also seems to be the darling of the Careers in a sort of way. She is definitely one of the gentler Careers in her pack and may shy away at her interview, so dig past this. Her gentle side will be a weakness in the arena, and she showed it at her training session as well.
Predicted Placing: 6th
Score: 8
Nero Blastaries, District 2 Male
Nero seemed not only physically fast, but mentally sharp as well. His preferred weapon was f ire , and he might've torched the room had we let him- but the district 2 boy simply burned up one of the simulation rooms. Nero showed us how he works well with two-handed weapons as well. He seems to get along best with Tempest from District 4 in the pack, but also has unique relationships with the others. The Capitol people might be overwhelmed by his fast train of thought at his interview so try and slow him down a touch.
Predicted Placing: 3rd
Score: 9
Hestia Mclearson, District 2 Female
From the very moment Hestia entered the gym she exhibited self-assurance but very little actual confidence which she seemed to try to hide. Despite this obvious anxiousness for her session, she performed very well in general with great skills with throwing knives and short swords. She doesn't seem fully at ease with the rest of the Careers and doesn't seem to trust them easily either. This will serve her well, and the fact she seems the most prepared out of the pack.
Predicted Placing: 1st
Score: 10
Tesla Miller, District 3 Male
Tesla swaggered in with an air of arrogance even exceeding that of Merlot Montague. He had obviously trained, but his age is a worse factor for him especially since he's the youngest out of all the Careers but seems to act like the oldest. However, we were forced to give him a larger score than he deserved with pro-Capitol parents who might flip should their son die. Try to see if there's a different side than his over-the-top confidence to Mr. Miller at his interview. He seems to have allied with the Careers, but they've been seen gossiping about him behind his back and may backstab him quickly.
Predicted Placing: 12th
Score: 8
Arden Goldenrod, District 3 Female
Arden greeted us with a fierce defiance that we rarely see in outer district tributes, so she perked up some interest with us Gamemakers. She seemed very flexible and was decent with a weapon for an outer district tribute, but was also incredibly clumsy and possessed a somewhat loud nature. Miss Goldenrod has allied with Miss Ashez from 11, and they seem to understand each other in a way beyond friendship, in a way. Miss Goldenrod has seemed angry the whole time she's been in the Capitol, and rumors of a failed volunteering are circulating, so it might be dramatic to ask about this.
Predicted Placing: 15th
Score: 6
Angelo Marris, District 4 Male
Mr. Marris showed experience with a fauchard and was quite agile in general. However, it was shown through his training days he prefers stabilizing facts to taking action. This may be credited to his background, though. Years ago, he was part of a murder scandal concerning Evelyn Marris, the main suspect being the mayor of District 4. Because of this Angelo must have been determined to avenge his mother, because he showed that he too was not simply a brawny career with analytical senses. Angelo seems to have connected best with Merlot of District 1 in the pack.
Predicted Placing: 5th
Score: 9
Tempest Trinidad, District 4 Female
Tempest seems to have reluctantly taken up the role of leading the Careers to herself. She immediately asked for an opponent to fight with. We sent out a Peacekeeper, and Tempest armed him with a knife while she was unarmed. While it took the majority of the session, Tempest eventually disarmed the Peacekeeper using her martial arts skills only, largely impressing us. However, we took to note she made a few rash attacks that could've ended up with her losing in the end- and of course in the Games there's no room for error. Despite this, Tempest is sure to fly far. There has been some gossip about the district 4 female never seeing the ocean before- this could be an interesting topic at her interview.
Predicted Placing: 4th
Score: 10
Nico Benetiez, District 5 Male
Nico took our interest right away, being an outer district volunteer. He has allied with the Careers and seems to deeply admire them, but often questions their thinking in a way of friendly concern. Whether this is Class A manipulation or simply friendliness is to be determined- but the other Careers seem to be tiring of it. Nico demonstrated a wicked ability with a Scottish Dirk knife, a type of thrusting dagger but little expertise with anything else. However, his personable attitude has charmed the Capitolites already so we can expect to see much from him. Mr. Benetiez also seemed very agile and fast from a few sprints he did. Asking why he volunteered will probably bring up a "big dreamer" outlook.
Predicted Placing: 7th
Score: 8
Ayla Maxwell, District 5 Female
Ayla seems to be a very detail-oriented, focused person, and she showed this with achieving nearly 100% accuracy. She was also a volunteer and seems the type to be fiercely dedicated to her siblings, especially since she volunteered for her older sister and seems to take the maternal role with her family. She seems the clingy type, though, and has latched onto her alliance with the Demeter Jarniven from 9 with a fierce determination to keep hold of- whether this is just a bargain for life or something more lies with Miss Jarniven.
Predicted Placing: 20th
Score: 4
Avven Herro, District 6 Male
Avven is yet another of the exceptionally strong and tough males in the Games this year. He showed expertise with camouflage of all things, but also worked well with knives. These will surely work to his advantage, but what might not do so is his obvious alliance with his weaker district partner who he is too nice to let go. She may drag him down in the end, but Avven seems to possess a fuel that can't be extinguished easily. The Careers have seemed to target him for his larger build and skills, but should Avven be able to avoid them it's likely he'll outlive most.
Predicted Placing: 9th
Score: 7
Audelia Glidden, District 6 Female
Having allied with Avven even before the pair arrived in the Capitol, Audelia might be able to survive for a bit because of her skills with technology. She seemed to even have fun while building several drones at a speed Capitol mechanics could envy. She shows a free spirited personality that does not like to be grounded, and often is seen bickering with Avven over the smallest things. However, she is a bit of a pipsqueak and possesses very little physical strength.
Predicted Placing: 18th
Score: 5
Euan Darling, District 7 Male
Euan has assembled a large team of allies, with all he has special relationships with. While it might be the case with someone else that they'd use these allies to boost themselves, a flaw about Euan we've seen time and time again is his sacrificial personality. He seems to have bonded especially with Aspen from his district. During his session, Mr. Darling showed us above average axe skills and even cooked up a raw steak he requested delivered in twenty minutes. While it didn't finish cooking in time, the aroma was heavenly.
Predicted Placing: 13th
Score: 7
Aspen Meredith, District 7 Female
We've seen Aspen throw axes in practice, but at her session we were disappointed. She presented exceptional survival skills but when it came time for her to practice her axe throwing she froze up and most of her axes landed on the most harmless places on multiple dummies. There were a few good throws in the bunch, though. She has also allied with Euan, the pair from 12, and the girl from 8. It's a larger alliance than what we usually see, so it could either make or break the tributes. We've heard that she and Lyana from 8 will be doing joint interviews, as Aspen is mute and Lyana deaf. Aspen's token, a small wood carving of a violin, was strung around her neck at her session today, suggesting she comes from a musical background. It would pay to ask about this.
Predicted placing: 14th
Score: 6
Linteum Ark, District 8 Male
It was easy to see Linteum was scared to death of us from the moment he entered the gym. Yet immediately he engaged in a "heartfelt" conversation with us, saying he didn't want to die and neither did anyone else, so if we could cancel the Games he'd be deeply grateful. After a moment of humor, we ordered him to actually show us his skills. The poor kid looked lost as he tried to wrestle a bow, missing almost every shot. Unfortunately, Linteum has remained without an ally though he has seemed friendly with Leon from 9. His lithe figure suggests that he's fast, but he lacked the choice to demonstrate it.
Predicted Placing: 23rd
Score: 2
Lyana Alyssum, District 8 Female
Miss Alyssum was one of the biggest surprises in the bunch. She demonstrated an above average ability with knives and a fierce determination to survive. However, with strong Careers, this might not be enough for her to survive for very long. She seemed pretty nervous around us but managed her anxiety quite well given the moment. An interesting thing about Lyana is her deafness yet she still is a more than capable tribute. But we observed a gentler side around Aspen from 7, which might very well be her undoing and both will attend each other's interviews. She doesn't seem very attached to her other allies, however.
Predicted Placing: 10th
Score: 7
Leon Knox, District 9 Male
Mr. Knox showed good skills with an axe as well as the fact that he was quite fast. Because of these running skills, if Leon makes good choices at the bloodbath he should be able to escape, and due to the nature of just his supreme speed Leon has continuously expressed interest in allying with his district partner as well as Linteum from Eight though the former has completely dissed him in that regard. He is in a physical state of wonder as well so he'll most likely place high, though how high is a question of his wits. Leon has shown a comforting side and was rumored to teach little kids back in District 9, so he has a special attachment to younger children.
Predicted Placing: 11th
Score: 7
Demeter Jarniven, District 9 Female
Demeter showed very little physical strength, but the way she displayed her skills was very well calculated and planned out. She sent a flirtatious wink to a few male Gamemakers and while her knives were not at all close to the bullseye she'll be one of the most popular for sponsors from the way she charmed us easily. Demeter has allied with Ayla from 5, who has seemed to fall under her spell, and whether Miss Jarniven is actually attached to Miss Maxwell is still to be determined and revealed through the Games.
Predicted Placing: 16th
Score: 5
Artemis Jade, District 10 Male
Artemis is schizophrenic, as we've learned from his mentor. It's clear he's learned to suppress it. His ally, Bailey from 11, doesn't know of this, and neither does little Reyena who is also allied with Artemis. He missed some training on Day 1 of training, proving he cannot fully hide his schizophrenia, and this will cause him to lose some footing in the arena. Artemis showed us moderate skills with weapons, but collapsed halfway through his session, screaming to someone none of us could hear and had to be escorted out.
Predicted Placing: 21st
Score: 4
Reyena Jensen, District 10 Female
Reyena's session was what you'd expect from such a little girl. She wasted most of her time trying to figure out how to use a knife, which was beyond ridiculous since she had three days of training to learn how. She showed some skills in the snares, and while this may preserve her from starvation it won't from a knife. Reyena also seems to rely on her allies a lot and through the four days we've seen her she has shown no weaponry experience at all, nor has she made the smart choice in choosing to work with some, so it's safe to assume she's a bloodbath.
Predicted Placing: 24th
Score: 3
Bailey Brearmon, District 11 "Male"
Bailey is one of the strongest outer district tributes and showed exceptional skills with a sickle. They show a very promising prospect in the Games and could even perhaps win if they didn't let Reyena, their ally they insist on nurturing, drag them down. Obviously Bailey is empathetic which is definitely an eventual weakness they'll have to face or suffer the consequences. Bailey also showed expertise with identifying plants during previous training days. They have also allied with Artemis, Reyena's district partner.
Predicted Placing: 8th
Score: 8
Deiondra Ashez, District 11 Female
Miss Ashez has allied with Arden from three which already qualifies her to be in the running, but her session proved that too. She is skilled enough with daggers to escape the bloodbath which she showed us by throwing knives and a rough rate of eight out of ten sticking to the target, but her physical physique, while slim, may not be enough for her to match the running speed of faster tributes at the bloodbath. It's a toss-up for Miss Ashez, most likely. She also showed good plant identifying abilities as well as the valuable skill to feed herself off of the earth.
Predicted Placing: 17th
Score: 6
Tristan Sol, District 12 Male
Tristan's session started off with just the opposite of a bang since he meant to ensnare a bunny but ended up giving it the first elevator ride of its life. The rest of his session was a bit more interesting since he managed to use a dagger in a way few from an outer district can. Tristan has allied with his district partner as well as both from 7 and Lyana from 8. Whether such a big group is to remain faithful is to be determined.
Predicted Placing: 19th
Score: 5
Periwinkle Calloway, District 12 Female
Periwinkle began her session with a large smile. We were intrigued because usually most outer district tributes give up by their sessions and Periwinkle was much different. She proceeded to show us a slightly above average district Twelve kid's session. Some of the highlights were a snare much better than her district partner's, and she focused on the survival statin and altogether did pretty well on most of them. However, she was very inexperienced with weapons as we could tell from a short practice with throwing knives. Periwinkle is allying with Tristan, Lyana, Aspen, and Euan.

Hey everyone! This is my longest chapter so far- wow. I hope everyone liked it! I might add in an extra chapter besides the interviews, night before, and the launch/ Dulsche chapter. Some of the characters mentioned even if only in passing will be pretty important later so keep them in your mind!
Also sorry if there are any mistakes like a spaced out spelling in this chapter. I pasted it from Drive and I had to go back and redo all the italics, bolds, etc which got really messed up, and my POV dividers on the past two chapters haven't been showing up, so if you're confused that's why.
In the meantime please fill out the poll on my profile. For clarification these rankings are NOT the story's/ Capitol's rankings.
See you all later!
Tia
