The horde finally ended, after what appeared to be a eternity. Claire quickly looked around to make sure there wasn't anything around them, as she got up and tried to shake off some of the dirt and mud, while the others did the same.
"Okay.. That was close.." Said Amanda, as they all jumped out towards the road. The horde was no longer visible, nor they could hear it, so they were in the clear.
"We have to keep moving." said Bonnie, as they got their bearings and continued down the road. While it seemed like they were wandering aimlessly, Bonnie had a plan, but she wasn't sure they would agree with it, so she kept it to herself for the moment.
Clementine kicked at some old, crusty leaves that were on the ground as she and Mika walked through the old road. For some reason it felt weird that they went into that community, and left just like that.
"We should have stayed back there. It looked safe, plus there was people there." she said.
"You heard what he wanted. I'm not about to join them in killing others. We have our plan, and we're sticking to it no matter-" the radio on Clementine's waist came to life, with static coming through it.
"Let me see." said Mika, as she grabbed it and tried adjusting the frequency. After several tries, she found a channel with no static.
"Hello?"
"Hello?" a female voice came through, from the radio. It seemed familiar.
"Thank God, I've been looking for this channel for several days now. I hope you remember me, I'm Evelyn, we were trying to stop Lanius, when we got attacked."
Those words hit both of them hard. If she was still alive, then that means she knows what happened at that time, and she might know who are the people that got them all separated.
"You have the right channel, I know I never gave you my name, but I'm the one that contacted you at the bunker. Things aren't going so hot right now."
"The Wanderers. It was all staged. The attack on out base, it was organized by Lanius himself."
Lanius. That was a name she hadn't heard in a long time.
"Is he dead?"
"He fled, as walkers attacked us. But listen, the wanderers wear black tactical armor when attacking others, if you see any of them, just stay away."
"You gave me that warning a little too late. We were attacked by them. Right now, I'm separated from my group, and I don't know if they're alive. But I did find a community, I asked for help, but they wanted me to join their militia." Mika then proceeded to try to tell her exactly where that camp was.
"I have no idea how you got in there without getting killed, but that's Wanderer territory. It's a miracle they didn't recognize you, or kill you. But stay away. I'm gathering everything I have left here in Atlanta, we should be over there in a few h-" Before she could finish her sentence, the channel got flooded with heavy static. They tried switching the channels, but to no avail.
" Damnit. If what she's saying is true, then we're right in the middle of it all. Still."
They were both sitting down on a rock, as a someone fired a bullet at them, missing by several inches. Clementine out of natural fear pulled out her pistol and fired back, as they took cover behind several rocks and trees, as they also fired back.
Clementine fired back, quickly getting behind the tree after firing shots, Mikaela did the same, but from across her, under a large boulder. They could get a quick glimpse at the man.
"Got him." said Clem, as she aimed at his knee, while he was distracted and fired, causing him to yell in pain and fall to the ground.
They both quickly ran over to see who it was.
"They're.. They're... Coming... And they're hungry..." said the Man, pointing towards a pair of people, who were coming towards them, aiming at the man. They were both instantly on alert, aiming their weapons back.
"Well, looks like you did the dirty work for us," said the girl, who was with another man, they both looked out of breath, they holstered their weapons and started to search the man.
"Why did you want him dead?"asked Mika, who still had her weapon in hand.
"He went into our camp and stole shit from us. Wasn't slick enough, we chased him God knows how long." said the man, who grabbed the small bag that was on the body.
"Here," the man said, as he pulled out a smaller zip lock bag, with several bullets in them.
"Uh oh. Over there.." said Clem, as she pointed towards the woods, where several hundred walkers were slowly converging on them.
"Shit.. Go, now!" They both ran, but the man suddenly stopped at the body.
"Kyle, what're you doing?!" exclaimed the girl.
"Hopefully this'll slow them down," he said, as he grabbed the lifeless body of the man and threw it in the path of the walkers, as he caught up and kept running with them, trying to get away from the horde.
"I guess we know what that guy was running from!" Exclaimed Clem, as she struggled to keep her breath steady. She tried not to look back, but couldn't help and do so, looking at the walkers.
Meanwhile, Lee and the others kept making distance from the walkers. The road was barren, dead. At the same time it provided security for them, since they could mostly see everything around.
"You hear that?" Kate pointed towards the curve that went towards the right side of the road.
"Sounds like a engine." said Mike.
They payed more attention, and they could now hear several vehicles getting closer by the second. Before they could even do anything, a convoy of several dozen vehicles came around the corner. Most of them were pick up trucks, with armed men in the back. They all stopped a few dozen yards from the group, and one of them got off.
It was Evelyn, roughly. She had a medium burn mark on the left side of her face, other then that she seemed fine. She, along with all her men, were using heavy weapons and wearing tactical armor.
"Good to see you're still alive and kicking Lee."
"Just barely, but we're missing the others, they-"
"I know what happened. The Wanderers attacked."
Zoey had a confused look.
"Wait how did you know?"
"Your little girl. Before, she gave me the frequency of the radio she had. I figured, I could try to communicate with her the plans we had."
"So-... So she's alive?" Asked Lee. A feeling of relief came over him.
"And so is the other girl, the one that made contact with us, with glasses.." she added, as she killed a walker that had wandered near.
"Mika.. Somehow she's alive too.." said Kate, under her breath. Last time she saw her she ran off into the horde that attacked them.
"So, who's the party for?" Asked Dalvin.
"We're taking the fight to them. The Wanderers end today. We have their main base, Lanius should be there too."
"If you have the radio, tell them what's going on." Said Coach.
"I'll try." she said, as she messed with the radio.
"Hello, anyone read?" Only static came through for a few seconds.
"Yeah hello?!" the voice of Mika came through, her tone was a bit agitated.
"We found members of your group, I'm guessing you'll want to talk to them?"
"Okay, but make it quick."
Lee grabbed the radio.
"Mika, are you okay? Is Clementine okay?"
"Yeah, we're both fine. Look, things aren't looking so good on our side."
"What's going on?"
"Walkers. We ran into a horde, it's bigger then the ones we saw in Savannah and Clay's camp. We pretty much outran them, but we're still moving."
"Yeah, we saw one too, hopefully it's the same one."
"We met two other people, they're okay for now, but I don't know if we can trust them."
"Fuck. Give me a sec." Lee looked at Evelyn.
"Is there anyway you can help them? Please, there's a damn horde out there."
"I can only think of one possible way. Tell them to get to the road as fast as possible, we'll see if we can pick them up on the way."
Lee nodded.
"Okay, Mika? Get to the road as soon as you can, we're going to try to pick you guys up."
"Hop in. We don't have much time." Lee and the others got in one of the vehicles as they quickly took off, driving down the road.
The girl was known as Kenzie, and Kyle was her brother, Clem and Mika learned some time after getting away from the horde. Apparently, they had also been victims of The Wanderers and were eager to get revenge.
"How long until they come around? It's been a while, and Walkers tend to catch up-"
"Shut up." Clem told Kyle, as they waited on the side of the road for anything to come up. After some time, The Convoy arrived. Lee and the others jumped off.
Clementine rushed towards Lee and they embraced in a hug.
"I'm glad you're okay." she told him.
"Me too." Lee looked at Mika, who wasn't looking too bad, except for some cuts on her arms, and the appearance of being tired.
"Thank you for keeping her safe." He told her, as he brought her in for a hug.
"Thanks for coming back. I knew you had in you. Let's wrap this up."
"You know how to use a 50. Cal?" Dalvin asked outloud, as he observed the powerful rifle mounted on the roof of one of the vehicles.
"Why do you need that?" Asked Mike, shocked at the weapon, never seeing one in person.
"We'll need it to knock down their door. Let's go."
Lee and the others mostly accepted Kyle and Kenzie, but he took Mika's advice to still keep an eye on them. They drove towards a clearing in the woods, the vehicle with the 50. Positioned in front of all the vehicles.
"One shot down the middle, and their doors open for us to attack."
"I'll try this shit." said Coach, as he grabbed the weapon, loaded it, and fired. The recoil from the weapon sent him back a few feet, the sharp sound of the bullet firing disoriented everyone for a bit, but looking through the binoculars, they could see that the round put a clean hole in their wall. The members of Evelyn's group started to move in, shooting down everyone in sight.
They all slowly moved in on the community. It was the same one Mika and Clem were in, but somehow they didn't notice it belonged to them. They kept low heads as they kept firing, taking down most of them.
Lee wanted Lanius. The man responsible for the death of Kenny, and indirectly the death of Lakela. He searched the area with his rifle, but didn't see him. After most of them were dead, they moved in on the center of the area, where Sam, appeared, holding a knife in his hand.
"Stand down. It's clear who's won this shit." said Mike, as he made sure nothing crept up on them.
"We were trying to clean Georgia. I've lived here my whole life. And yall are just trying to destroy it, more then it already is!"
"Haven't you opened your damn eyes? It's the whole world that's gone to hell, you, and these damn murderers aren't going to fix anything!" exclaimed Evelyn.
"Now!" Sam yelled. Through the rear of his eye, Dalvin could see a the reflection of a sniper scope in the balcony of the building in front of them.
"Sniper, move!" Everyone jumped out of the way, but the sniper managed to shoot Evelyn in the left thigh, causing her to fall to the ground.
Sam instantly bolted her way and tried to stab her, but she started to fight with him, the knife missing her chest by inches.
Dalvin pulled out his pistol and shot Sam in the back, knocking him over, while the others shot at the sniper. Sam, with the little life he had left, dragged himself to a set of barrels, and tried to get up, but was gunned down by the group."
Everyone focused fire on the sniper, while the small tents around started to burn down, causing a large column of smoke rising into the sky.
Walkers started to enter the compound, Evelyn's men were overwhelmed, they were either dead or were being pushed back.
"I'm going in." Lee grabbed several grenades and entered the main building, looking for his target. In the second floor, he saw the sniper rifle perched on the balcony.
"Found what you're looking for?" Asked a voice. Lee turned around, and was instantly punched by the man, sending him over the balcony, but he managed to hang on with one hand. It was Philip, the leader.
"You're people have always been a nuisance to me. How flattering is it to them see you die in front of them?"
"I can say the same thing." exclaimed Lee, as he spit in his face and quickly climbed back up, getting into a fistfight with him.
Lee wasn't easily overwhelmed, as he held Philip in a lock, and began to apply pressure to his neck, choking him to death. He let go of his lifeless body, and stabbed him in the head.
"Now it's you and me Lee. I know you want this." Lanius came out of one of the rooms, with a black eye, unarmed. Rage instantly took over Lee as he lunged at him. They began to fight, they both got a glimpse of the group, who were fighting off the walkers.
" How do you want this to end Lee? You stay dead, or you die, and come back?" Lee noticed a walker, come out of one of the rooms.
"We're about to find out!" exclaimed Lee, as he grabbed Lanius by the neck, and shoved it into the Jaws of the walker, who then started to tear his neck apart, splattering blood all over. He waited for a bit, then he killed both of them, as he quickly ran back down to help the others.
"Is it done?" Asked Kenzie, as she threw barrels at the feet of the walkers, trying to slow them down.
"We just have to find a way out now."
Amanda, Claire and Bonnie saw what was going on from a distance as they entered the compound from the other side, joining the fight against the dead, taking the group by surprise.
Suddenly, as the walkers were dying out, Carter and Cass came out of the main building, but something was odd. Before Claire could receive them, Carter pulled out a gun.
"Whoa Dad, what're you doing?!"
"This is all his fault. Wherever he goes, he destroys it. The people he meets, he gets them killed."
"You're not taking straight. Put the gun down, let us get out of here and we'll talk about it. Do it for your daughter's -"
"You don't get to talk about them!" He growled, as he fired a shot, luckily missing. Emile nodded his head in disappointment as grabbed a pistol and shot back at him.
"Calm down old man. You're in no position to try to kill of our own. We've already lost enough."
"He's right. We just got back together after days, and just to kill each other? That's fucking stupid!" exclaimed Kate.
"I...I.. You're right. I... Don't know what came over me.. They took us, tried to talk us into killing others.. But we didn't accept.."
"That's nice and all, but could we get out of here before we get killed?" Asked Evelyn, who was now walking healthy on her own, miraculously.
"Let's, before the horde shows up." said Bonnie, as they all got into the vehicles that were left working, as they left the compound behind. Philip and Lanius were dead. The members of the Wanderers were dead. They were no more, and their reign of terror over the area was done.
They could finally continue the path they had originally set, and that was to leave the state. While this hurt some of them emotionally, because they lived their whole lives there, it was necessary after seeing what was happening. There was nothing left for them here.
Clementine leaned against Lee's shoulder, while she looked out the window. While it wasn't the same, it reminded her of when they were riding the RV from the motel to try to get to Savannah. While it ended up being a disaster, they were all still together.
They were on the road for quite some time. As they drove around a road, it was full of vehicles, obstructing the path for them.
"Looks like we're on foot. Get up everyone. Time to walk," said Mike, as some of the group members were asleep. They all got off and stretched, before they scoped the area.
"If we had a tank, we could just role over these shits. Chances are, we find another working car on the end of this." said Mike, as he looked through a set of binoculars.
"Let's not waste time. Just watch where you step, we don't need any accidents."
They all walked through the lanes of cars for some minutes, and after reaching the end, they found a car, it was dead, but with the right things, they could get it working.
"Is that a good idea? Maybe if we just continue down the road, we'll find something better." said Carter.
"Unless there's a car with gas and a working battery down there, I'll take your word for it. We just need a battery from any of these cars, and some gas, it don't have any, apparently." Mike said, he was the one that knew the most about cars in the group.
"I'll go try to siphon some. Wish me luck." Said Zoey, as she grabbed the gallon and a old tube.
"I'll go with you." said Cass, feeling eager.
"Just stay close. And holler if anything." said Lee, who was standing guard with Dalvin.
"Do you have a plan if that car doesn't work?"
"Then we just keep going. That horde... I don't know.. But I feel like if we just keeping going, we'll get far enough from it."
"Hey.. Um.. We just wanted to say thanks for letting us tag along with you guys. We probably would've died out there. So we'll try to do our best to help out," said Kenzie, feeling grateful for not being kicked out of the group or anything.
"Do anything you can. We've all made it this far by helping each other."
Lee walked over to where Cristy was, a bit isolated.
"You've been quiet. Are you feeling okay?"
"I'm just thinking. I saw Lanius leave with my parents, and he came back without them. Seeing him dead, it lifts the deadweight on my chest, but at the same time, I don't feel great, because him being dead isn't going to bring my parents back."
"I understand how you feel. But they're gone now, and they won't do any harm to anyone else again. Got me?"
"Yeah, pal. I got you." She said, smiling a bit. Her parents killer was dead, they had been avenged. And in the end, all that matters is living, killing, and surviving however you can in the New World.
