Sitting in the uncomfortable hospital chair four hours later Mike fiddled with Kate's rings in his hand
"Mike…" Swain tried to make conversation
"Loosing the baby will break her" he sniffled
"It's only a possibility Kate and the baby could both survive to live full happy lives"
"It's been four hours, she's gone into Cardiac arrest three times…"
"Mike…"
"This is my fault"
"No" Swain shook his head
"I brought out these doubts, if I'd kept my mouth shut she wouldn't be here" he shifted forward in his chair
"Kate made her own choices, she always has"
"We fought about it, she told me to trust her and I threw it back in her face"
"You had a right to be concerned as her husband it's your job to keep her safe" Swain placed a hand on his arm
"But I couldn't, I couldn't keep her safe she wouldn't even talk to me she just decided to run while I was asleep" he pushed Swains arm off
"She wasn't running"
"Her note suggests otherwise"
"Look you and Kate are just both too stubborn you'd do whatever you need to protect her and she'd do the same, in this case that's exactly what she was doing because the thought of loosing you… Kate can't bare to live with that"
"Swain… I can't lose her, I can't…" he began saying before he jumped up from his chair when the doctor made her way over pulling off her mask
"Any news?"
"The surgery was a success"
"Thank god" he smiled when Swain moved to stand
"She isn't out of the woods yet unfortunately she's been placed in an induced coma to help with the healing process"
"A coma?"
"It's the best way for the body to heal without the stress" Swain assured him
"And… and the baby?" Mike asked nervously
"Your baby is safe and healthy"
"Can I see her?"
"Of course, now just to warn you it might be a little confronting, but Kate is in the best place to recover she's in the room down the hall first door on the right" she pointed
"Thank you Doctor" Mike smiled sadly
"I'll wait for you here" Swain nodded watching Mike move down the hall.
Entering her room slowly Mike took in a deep breath at seeing her unconscious form with a large bandage across her chest, a tube down her throat to help her breath and the monitor near her bed beeping with each heart beat;
taking the empty seat next to her bed Mike ran his hand down her arm and interlocked his fingers with hers
"God Kate…" he held her hand against his lips he started tearing up, fiddling with her rings he slipped them back on her finger where they belonged
"Everything went well, the baby it's… it's healthy and safe" he shifted placing his head carefully against her stomach with his hand still interlocked with hers he began crying silently
"Please don't leave me, I love you" he squeezed her hand in the hopes that she'll know he was there.

Reading the same magazine for the 10th time in the past two hours Swain placed it down when a voice interrupted him,
"Swain, how's he doing?" Bomber approached him
"He's struggling.." Swain looked up from his seat
"Is it true?" Bomber sat next to him
"Bomb…"
"Did Aden really shoot his own sister?"
"No, Aden didn't but his friend did"
"I can't believe I was actually attracted to the guy" Bomber sat back in her chair
"I know this must be hard for you…"
"For me? What about the X it was her brother and she's the one lying in there in a coma" she snapped
"Bomber…" Mike looked at them confused as he made his way down the hall
"Sir, how… how is she?" she moved to stand with Swain
"I think she knew I was there, I mean part of me hoped she knew?" Mike smiled sadly
"I'm sure she did" Bomber placed a hand on his arm
"Yeah um is there any news on Aden?" Mike cleared his throat
"No" Swain shook his head
"Ah well actually.. that's why I'm here" Bomber moved back
"Sorry?" Mike looked at her confused then at Swain who just shrugged
"He called me, some form of remorse I suppose but he's um.. he wants to talk to you"
"To me?" Mike questioned
"He mentioned something about the X and how he'd never meant to hurt her I don't know honestly I was just trying to hang up the call as fast as I could"
"There's nothing I have to say to him that I haven't already said, he does not deserve forgiveness mine or Kate's for that matter"
"Look Boss I'm not defending him but see it from his point of view it's his sister lying in there, his sister who he just found after twenty-four years"
"Yes his sister who he was sent to kill!" Mike snapped
"He deserves the chance to explain, that's all I came to say" she smiled weakly before walking off,
"Can you believe her!" Mike sat down in a huff
"Well…"
"Don't you start"
"She does have a point, dosen't he at least deserve to know that she's okay?" Swain looked at him sadly
"In case it missed anyone's mind he is the reason she's here in the first place" Mike motioned
"But he's not… not really he wasn't the one who pulled the trigger" Swain shifted to sit next to him
"I could have lost my wife, never hold her in my arms again, never kiss her goodnight, never hear her laugh or the way she'd tease me and it is because of him how would you feel if you and Sally were in this situation?" Mike held his hand across his face to block out the bright light making his oncoming headache worse
"No one's saying you have to forgive the guy but maybe.. try and meet him halfway let him know she's ok"
"Swain…"
"Maybe it's enough for now, you don't have to see him or hear his excuses but he does deserve to know"
"I need to go be with Kate" he arose walking up the hallway again
"Just think about it, think about what Kate would want" Swain called after him
"Not now… now I just.." Mike stopped to look at him
"I'll be here when your finished" he smiled sadly at him
"Thanks..".
Sitting in the small police room the next morning Mike sat uncomfortably while he waited for the officers to bring him in
"Mike?" Aden looked at him confused when he was escorted into the room
"You've got ten minutes" the officer answered exciting the room and standing by the door
"What.. what are you doing here?" Aden asked through the silence
"Bomber said you'd called her.. that you wanted to talk"
"I appreciate you taking the time to come here.."
"Let's get one thing straight I'm not here for you or for me what I am here for is because no matter how much I hate you for what you've done I know Kate would forgive you in a heartbeat"
"Mike…"
"Because you're her brother and I know deep down all she ever wanted was to find you"
"I'm sorry…" he began saying when Mike held a hand up to stop him
"You wanted to talk, so talk" Mike looked at him angrily
"How is Kate? I've been asking but no one… no one here will tell me, is she okay is the baby okay?" he instantly asked
"She had surgery yesterday when she was brought in they removed the bullet, but she went into cardiac arrest several times…"
"But she's alive right? I mean she has to be alive otherwise you would have killed me by now" he cracked a joke
"She's in a coma and the Doctors aren't sure when or if she'll wake up" Mike ignored Aden's smart remark
"And the…"
"Jellybean is fine"
"Jellybean that's.. that's cute" Aden smiled
"Why'd you do it? Why come here and pretend to want to know Kate if the plan was to always kill her"
"That was the plan at first.. but then I got to know her, know how happy you made her, how much she was looking forward to being a Mother when she told me she was Pregnant I immediately called it off but the Boss he…"
"Sent that Dion guy to finish the job"
"Yes.."
"Tell me Aden, who exactly is your Boss?" Mike shifted forward in his chair
"I can't…"
"You can't what disclose that information?" Mike snapped
"I would if I could but.."
"If you care anything for your sister, for her unborn child you'll give him up you'll get them to put a stop to that so called 'business'"
"You don't understand what is at stake here Mike" Aden sighed
"That is total crap! We let you in Aden, we let you into our home into our unborn child's life do you have any idea what Kate has gone through searching for you? The heartbreak of constant let downs all she ever wanted was her brother back her brother home" Mike shifted to stand in annoyance
"All I ever wanted was that too"
"Then just tell me!"
"I can't!" he yelled back when Mike moved towards the door
"I did some thinking overnight… I was willing to give you a second chance, willing to let you be in our child's life"
"You were?" he asked confused
"Now I'm not so sure" Mike placed a hand on the doorhandle
"Wait! Wait… I'll tell you on one condition" Aden sighed
"Within reason" Mike smiled for the first time during their meeting
"Promise me you'll look after her?" he looked at him sadly
"I will always, always protect Kate" he removed his hand off the door handle
"His name is Marcus Marvel and he is my Father, but.. he is also the Boss who ordered Kae killed"
"Why?" Mike moved back to sit down
"Two reasons, Kate's father was the well-known Lord of England everybody knew who he was, how much money he had"
"And the other reason?"
"Jealousy"
"Jealousy?" Mike looked at him confused
"Dad was jealous at the life Kate had built herself in Australia, I guess he was hoping she wouldn't achieve to much then he found out she was high ranking in the Navy, married to a Lieutenant Commander and he saw red"
"So what, he killed her Dad?"
"No… that was me, he was my target I was unaware until I came here that he was her Father" Aden sighed
"This is all such a mess" Mike ran his hands through his hair
"Tell me about it, Mike I did not shoot Kate and I know you have no right to believe me after everything I've done but Kate.. she is my sister"
"I believe you" Mike looked at him sadly
"I'm looking at five to ten years here, for being an accessory to commit murder that is why I need you to look after her don't let her ever regret her life because of what I did"
"Sorry fella's time's up" the officer interrupted
"She's lucky to have you" Aden smiled at Mike when they moved to stand
"I'm the lucky one"
"When she wakes up, tell her… tell her I'm sorry" he took one last look at Mike before the officer escorted him out of the room.
