I was hoping to get this chapter out before Christmas, but whatever. I chose to take a few days off to get through the holiday and have myself a break.
[Jaune]
Jaune pushed through some of the many doors of the Academy on his way to the Alchemy Laboratory. On his way there, he passed by several indoor vivariums where more exotic herbs were grown. Plants collected from other continents and brought to Dr Oobleck and Professor Peach's attention. Most of the species were unrecognisable to Jaune unlike what was grown outside in the courtyard gardens. Those were at least native to Vale.
I wonder if we can get some cuttings? Dr Oobleck might want to trade gold or artefacts for them, but I think we could make a deal.
It cost money to maintain this menagerie, so a generous donation ensuring that end would free up some seeds or saplings. Dr Oobleck might not protest if the team could build their own greenhouse to maintain an additional supply of the plants. He would sleep soundly knowing some of his species could survive in case something happened to the Academy. Those soldiers could have burnt everything to the ground if they felt like it.
As he reached the final door, Jaune could hear talking on the other side. One surely sounded like Nora bouncing around and discussing whatever came to mind as Ren listened and interjected as a reply. From the lack of bodies, Jaune guessed they were the only people present. Even better since they needed to discuss this in private.
Blake took care of Yang, Sun, and Ruby, so it's my turn to get everyone else.
Jaune knocked twice and waited a moment before entering. The voices inside dulled to silence and Jaune took that as his cue to enter. Opening the door, he revealed the lab was devoid of people aside from those he sought out. Not even the professors were here today.
"Hey, Jaune," Nora called out, waving a hand. "What's up?!"
"Blake found something, but what about you guys?"
Ren was working hard, mixing something in a small mortar and pestle. Between him and Nora were the alchemy bench and all of their ingredients. Most of which Jaune recognised as they were basics of a healing potion. Some wheat stalks, mushrooms, and alchemical solvent.
Though, the other herbs were still a mystery to Jaune.
"I'm trying to improve the basic healing potion," Ren explained, adding the ingredients to a small pot to boil.
"We wanted to see if we can make it more potent," Nora added on. "I thought it would cut down on the weight we have to carry around. But... We've been trying for a while, and it hasn't worked yet."
That's cool...
Potions might not seem like a lot, but they added up. Jaune had to drink some just to get that extra weight off him. Extra stamina from those same potions made things even better since he could go farther without being winded. Though Jaune knew of strength potions, those were hard to make since the ingredients were harder to come by.
"Won't that kill your kidneys," Jaune asked, swirling one of the prototypes Ren had concocted. From his inexperienced eye, there was nothing wrong with the potion. It was better than anything he'd made yet. "Your body's got to filter that out somehow..."
Toxicity was another thing to worry about. Sure healing potions were all well and good, but they were able to destroy internal organs if taken too much at once or if your body could not handle it. The only ways Jaune knew to get around it was to make a less concentrated version of the solution. Ren seemed to be modifying the formula itself.
"That's part of why we're experimenting," Ren said, going to grab some more herbs from a cabinet. "Dr Oobleck said we could try and if it worked, he wanted to test it out for himself. So, we're trying to combine different healing plants to see if we can make the healing more potent and less toxic."
Kinda figured he would have that solved it by now... Probably no demand since the original stuff works fine.
"But you said Blake found something," Nora asked with a curious look. "What was it?! Is it really cool?! Ruby hasn't said anything to us!"
I'm getting there...
Jaune pulled out Blake's notes and set them down on a small table he pulled over. She lent him a copy of her notes detailing some of the many things found deep in the dungeon. Though, the only thing she hadn't given him was the map, so Jaune was going to pitch the gameplan without that.
"Blake's been sitting on this for a while, but she found some underground ruins that go on for miles," Jaune explained, showing the pair some of the diagrams and drawings Blake made.
The Faunus' notes were extremely detailed. Enough to navigate entire portions of the crypt on those alone. She'd marked out traps, chests with possible loot, and entrances she had not gone into. Though, she went to great lengths not to mention where the dungeon's location was in the book.
Blake was keeping the location and details separate. If one was lost, the loot was safe for now since she was the only one who knew everything. Jaune thought it was a good idea because someone might have been able to jump him and steal the plans along with the map if Blake had given both to him.
"And you want both of us to join you," Ren asked, raising an eyebrow. He was also scanning through the notes, taking in every detail possible.
"Yep."
"Yes," Nora answered immediately, nearly shouting and giving her answer.
"I don't see a reason not to," Ren calmly expressed, handing the notes back over to Jaune.
"Yeah, we need the money," Nora explained, taking a quick look through the notes. "If we want to get a house, this is better than going on a bunch of quests!"
"I see what you mean, Nora," Jaune agreed, leaning back in a chair. "If we find enough down there, then we might be able to buy something in the city and have a bunch left over. When Weiss and I got done with our task, we had twenty thousand Lien and a couple of really good weapons."
"Twenty thousand?!" Nora's jaw dropped as she repeated the value.
Didn't last long, but it was something. Don't know what Weiss, Blake, or Sun did with their Lien, but it looks like they blew through it pretty quick...
"These ruins will have more," Ren added on. "Given their size, I would guess at minimum, forty thousand. Only, that's dependent on how much survived and what we can get to."
Ren was right about that. These ruins might have been half-collapsed at this point. The ones Weiss and Jaune had gone into were filled with water, or the passages were sealed by fallen rocks. Luckily, the word wall was in the most conserved part of the citadel and didn't get closed by the structure's age. That also meant a lot of the loot was hidden from them. Jaune guessed they might not recover more than half of total loot from this one section.
"But, when do we want to go," Nora asked, keeping her voice low. "Someone else might find the cave before we do."
"We're meeting tomorrow morning in the same place we met before we started questing," Jaune clarified, leaning in to keep his voice hidden. "I want to leave the next day, so we can get down there as fast as possible.
Use the time to gather everything you need, but we can also buy stuff along the way. Keep that in mind." With that, Jaune got up and collected the notebook.
"Then we'll make as many healing potions as possible," Ren stated, clearing the table of his previous experiment. "Better to have some now and not have to buy any."
[Weiss: The Next Morning]
"Oh, who's a good boi," Yang cutely repeated several times to Dreizehn. The puppy squirmed in her lap whilst licking her face excitedly. His paws pressing against those balloons she called breasts, pushing them up and emphasising their size.
Dreizehn had quickly become a hit amongst nearly everyone in their group. Weiss had seen almost all of the girls still in the dorms come up to pet him once. However, Yang and Pyrrha had fallen in love with the dog at first sight. They couldn't resist.
Since then, her new pet was, to put it simply, spoiled by her companions. Dreizehn was probably getting more affection now than he had ever in his entire life. With three hundred plus girls here, and another three who were feeding him scraps of food from the table and letting him cuddle in bed, how could he not be? The dog was the most popular creature in the Academy at this moment.
Weiss had no problems with that. In fact, it was quite beneficial. Yang and Ruby owned a dog themselves and knew better than anyone how to take care of it. The Brawler had even begun to teach him some simple commands like 'sit' or 'lay down.' So, allowing her friends to have some time with Dreizehn was not an issue in the slightest.
The dog jumped down from Yang's bed and picked up one of the ropes they made into a toy. He then walked over to Weiss and dropped it at her feet, giving the girl a begging look. Dreizehn wanted to play some more, so Weiss obliged, grabbing the other end and allowing him to pull against her strength.
Right now, he was not able to outmatch the Mage, but it would not take long before fully grown men were at his mercy. The dog was likely at a measly level two or three at the moment but would grow as he aged. Most animals didn't get farther than level fifty, but more often than not, never reached that point. If he was with adventurers, it was likely Dreizehn would blow past level fifty and sail onwards.
Hmmm, if I take him on any quests, I need to make sure to get him some armour. Maybe Yang or someone else can train him to be an attack dog as well, so he can defend himself?
Weiss knew she would eventually take him on quests, so she needed to make sure Dreizehn could be safe. Keeping him back would only do so much, but stray arrows or errant monsters didn't care. Luckily, with Jaune's healing magic, she wasn't as concerned about him. Their group had a somewhat capable surgeon on hand with someone who could close the wounds after the object was removed.
I should ask Jaune to make some armour then... Making kit for people and animals is not all that different. The shape is what changed and how they wore it, but the principles stood.
"Hey," a person called out from Weiss' side. She turned and saw another girl standing at the headboard. "Paladin said he needed you for something. Don't know what..." Without any further details, the girl walked away, having delivered her message.
Jaune...
Weiss didn't know what he could have wanted right now. It sent a shock through her, which landed and remained in her stomach for some time. However, she didn't hesitate, grabbing Myrtenaster and calling Dreizehn to follow her. The pup complied, trotting next to her as happy as he could be.
Departing from the dorms, she found Jaune standing outside the building and leaning up against the nearby columns. The boy was kicking around a rock whilst reading through a small book in his hands. Frankly, he seemed out of place compared to some of his peers as he acted like a regular teenager when they were serious warriors. Though the same could be said for Sun, and Ruby or Yang on the other side.
Weiss figured that part of Jaune was what made him more approachable. He would have been much duller if he dropped the boyish demeanour and adopted a sombre persona. The same went for Ruby as well.
As Weiss walked over to him, Jaune looked up and saw her. He smiled and put the book back in his pocket before addressing the girl. The boy seemed very excited about something. Weiss was curious about it.
"Weiss, we need your help," Jaune began, clasping hands together. His tone was straightforward and didn't seem to be hiding anything.
"Who is 'We," Weiss replied before he could go any further.
"Blake and I," Jaune corrected, laughing nervously.
Weiss didn't even bother to deign a reply to that. She turned and began walking away from him before she said something regretful. There was no way the Mage would join in on some scheme Blake cooked up even if Jaune was in on it. Surely, she'd duped him into doing something illegal, and Weiss would have no part in it.
"Wait, Weiss, I haven't even told you what it was yet," Jaune pleaded, raising his voice as he followed behind. When he reached her, the boy stepped in front of her and stopped her exit. "Blake found ruins, big ones. So, I need your help to get past any of the traps down there." He pulled the notebook back out and turned a few pages in to show her some diagram. "Just look at some of the stuff she found!"
Weiss was prepared to smack him for stopping her like he did, but decided to hold off. The book made her pause out of interest and courtesy. So, she snatched the notes from his hand and began looking over the diagram.
It was a large door with runes scrawled all over. Weiss recognised the language but didn't have a way to decode it on hand right now. However, she understood it was legitimate and not some fabrication because it was too well made. There was no way Blake would have been able to come up with that on her own. Someone else possibly, but few were willing to sit down and write out nearly an entire book's worth of details on ruins just to fool some first-year students.
"So, what do you think," Jaune asked, leaning down into her field of view.
"I think she found an underground city from before the Golden Age," Weiss explained her thoughts. "Though, I don't trust her intentions one bit!"
An Assassin would not be so trusting over what appeared to be a considerable sum of money ripe for the taking. No Thief would do anything out of the goodness of their heart because there was always a catch. It was something for something when it came to them, and they could easily backstab you if they so pleased.
"I'm getting that," Jaune grumbled, kneading his face. "But everyone else wants to meet up in about an hour to go over the details as a group. It's probably going to be the same deal where we split all the money and loot evenly, so if you want a say, you need to come join us. Just behave yourself and don't give Blake the satisfaction she was the bigger woman."
Errrgghhhh!
"Hmmmmpfff," Weiss huffed poshly. She turned and began walking to the meeting place. "You really think I can't control myself?! I'll show both of you!"
"I'm already worried..."
[Ruby]
Ruby was so excited she was about to explode. The Reaper couldn't wait any longer for Jaune and some of the others to show up. Her mood emphasised by how her legs swung back and forth rapidly. The girl sat and waited on top of the front row of desks, just hoping someone else was going to walk in the next second.
Next to her was the gambeson and chainmail she'd bought the previous night. That trip made even better by Blake showing up and giving her whole spiel about the dungeon. Once, the Faunus helped her and Yang pick out a trustworthy vendor for the padding, the sisters ran home and began preparing for the trip.
Ruby was delighted with the armour Blake had recommended. It was black with red accents and the hems, matching her colour scheme. This set was a low collared variety with diagonal leather straps which looped into some clasps. After she bought it, a tailor-cut the armour down further to remove some of the extra material but left room for her to grow as well. It was thin enough to fit under the lamellar and very breathable too. However, Ruby understood you weren't going to be wearing it all the time. You were only supposed to have it on when you were in dangerous areas.
"Ruby, you're gonna blow a gasket if you don't calm down," Yang warned teasingly from across the floor. The girl sitting with Pyrrha and looking over some of her kit.
"I'm just so excited," Ruby chirped, ceasing her leg kicking. "If we get enough Lien, we can try some quests over in Atlas! Weiss said we could go up to the Mage's College too, and look around. There was also that underground city she explored!"
Vale had lots of cool things, but other kingdoms had their own interesting landmarks. If they didn't get to them now, there was no way the whole group would ever go at once. That was the entire point about the trip up there, so they could all hang out and enjoy Solitas.
"Now, I'm not dogging on Atlas or Atlesians, but Vacuo is the place to go," Sun interjected, gesticulating while making his point. "Warm sandy beaches! Tropical rainforests on the coastlines! Fresh fruits hanging off the trees that are fair game! Best of all, it never gets cold!"
Oooo, that sounds nice... But I don't want to get a sunburn.
Ruby was not exactly built for that environment. Her skin was rather delicate when it came to the sun.
"I'm surprised you weren't talking up how pretty the girls were or how hot the guys were," Blake pointed out dryly. "Didn't exactly put any bait on that hook..."
"Oh, they are, trust me, prime example right here," Sun replied, leaning back in his chair with a goofy smile. "Not everything's about girls, though. I like to hang out and take a nap in my hammock from time to time. Vacuo is perfect if you can find some shade to relax in."
Everyone looked at each other with a confused look. What he'd said sounded so unSun-like nobody believed him. Sun was the type of guy to go pick up girls or try to get them to go out on dates using his charm when the group was out in the market. It might have worked on Ruby, but not every other girl was buying it so easily.
"You kind of made it sound like a vacation spot instead of a place we can explore," Yang pointed out, continuing the conversation. "Ruby's whole plan was for us to go fight monsters or crawl through some ancient city like we're about to do."
"We have that too," Sun explained, feeling annoyed that he had to keep selling the destination. "There's a bunch of cities that sunk into the desert a while back, and sometimes one or two get uncovered because of a storm. But most of our monsters are either super weak or totally overpowered like the death worms."
"Death worms?"
"Yeah, think of a worm with teeth," Sun described, pausing for only a second. "But a million times larger! These things are like the size of a ship! We kill them all the time, but they keep coming back..."
"That sounds terrifying..."
Ruby wasn't disgusted by worms, but ones the size of a galleon and were predatory did not sit well with her. Zombies were fine, so were goblins, but that was crossing the line. It kind of made her rethink her opinion of the kingdom. The cold might have been preferable.
"You guys have dragons," Sun exclaimed exasperatedly. "What gets scarier than that?! At least we know when the ground is going to open up and try to swallow us! You could be walking around out in some field and not know anything was about to attack you until it landed!"
"Don't forget all of the other draconids," Yang added on. "We have cockatrices, basilisks, wyverns, and a bunch of other flying monsters! No real dragons, though."
Ruby was kind of disappointed they were all dead. Dragons were monsters but were very intelligent. They only wanted to defend their lairs and nests. Unfortunately, adventurers back then killed them because they wanted to get to their loot or thought they were threats. She saw it as a waste as possibly eliminating an entire species meant nobody else could see them. Only skeletons in museums were left as far as society knew.
The sound of the doors opening to the classroom stopped the conversation momentarily. Everyone looked in that direction and found Jaune and Weiss coming in with Ren and Nora following behind. As they entered, Jaune read the room and probably felt the argument they were having hung around.
"Did we interrupt something?"
"They were arguing about who's monsters were scarier," Pyrrha explained, using her neutral position to give the facts. "Sun thinks dragons are scarier than Vacuoan death worms."
"That sounds terrifying," Jaune exclaimed. "What's a death worm?!"
"You don't want to know..."
With that out of the way, everyone took their various seats while Jaune and Blake got upfront. The two used some tacks to pin a map of Sanus onto the board. Jaune then handed a notebook over to Blake who opened it to an unknown page.
"All right, we've both told you guys a little about what we're doing here, so I'll cut to the chase," Jaune began, sitting on the teacher's desk. "This is the big one. We're set for cash as long as we can haul everything out of this dungeon. Blake's done a little scouting ahead, so we know about two or three miles down the passage she explored. However, the rest of that city is completely unknown to us. So, since Blake's done all the leg work for the team, it's her show-her rules." Jaune gestured to Blake for her to begin.
A whole underground city.
Ruby hardly believed it when Blake told her. The girl's mind immediately went to 'How did they build it?' If this thing was larger than Vale, they had to have spent decades tunnelling through rock or dirt to make it happen. All of that effort just for them to eventually abandon the city and leave it to the dead.
"Okay..." Blake started flatly, not being used to speaking in front of a crowd. Her mind took several moments to come up with something to say. "...So, this dungeon is located in the Pantan Swamps. It's technically not a part of Vale like most of the southern portion of Sanus. We're completely on our own once we pass Mountain Glenn. But there are several cities along the coast and further inland we can travel through." She gestured to the map, showing a path marked out. "Sun, Yang, and Pyrrha should know this area pretty well because we've travelled this path before, but that can change any moment. Factions compete for power over the city-states, trade routes, or resources in Vale and throughout the southern region. We may run into armies moving around, so we need to be very careful about what to do if we encounter them. There's also the Church. The city of Grosche is between us and the dungeon. I made sure to mark out a path that takes us far away from there. It's going to take us longer, but we won't have to contend with any Inquisitors or Templars."
Templars? Probably some kind of special warrior for the Church...
"Question, though," Sun interrupted as Blake paused, raising his hand high. "How the hell are we supposed to get all this gold back to Vale, if we find any down there? We could barely move any of that stuff we found in the last dungeon around. There's no way we're walking it back here..."
"Yeah..." Ruby agreed, immediately siding with Sun. "I don't think we could. It would slow us down way too much."
Bandits would be able to ambush us if we're not careful...
"Why not rent a horse and cart," Nora suggested, glancing around the room. "One of us could front the money now, and everyone else can pay them back once we're done."
"Good luck trying to get that cart through the swamps," Sun replied, shrugging his shoulders. "Mud's like two feet deep, and a whole team would get stuck and die from exhaustion."
"Even if we put the gold on saddles, the horses wouldn't be able to make it through," Pyrrha added on. "From what you described, Blake, the dungeon's too far from any major roads for us to walk it back and forth either."
Blake and Jaune shared a look before the boy spoke.
"I'll try to talk to Ozpin about it," he expressed. "Maybe those ruins will convince him to help us out. Dr Oobleck would want some of the artefacts to study."
Ruby was confident Professor Ozpin would throw them some kind of bone. He liked Jaune and Ruby, so he may be more willing to listen to any bargains. The Reaper just hoped the price would be something they could afford. If the tomb turned out to be a barren trove, then they might be stuck repaying a debt too large for the group to handle.
"I guess that brings us to the next point," Ren interjected. "How do we want to split the loot?"
"Fairly and evenly," Blake declared, leaving no room for her words to be twisted. "If someone wants something, they can have it, but their share of gold will be smaller depending on the price."
"We should also give people gear depending on their class and style of weapon," Jaune added on, crossing his arms. "Like, for example, we find a sword. Yang doesn't need it because she doesn't use blades. Gauntlets can be all her's, but Blake, Pyrrha, Weiss, and I would have dibs on other stuff. If nobody wants or can use it, then we sell it for the best price and split up the gold."
"However, I would like to see whatever magical items we recover," Weiss requested respectfully. "There may be some items we can use better if I familiarise myself with them."
"Huh?"
"She wants to study the enchantments and see how they work, Yang," Jaune clarified. "If we can make use of an enchanted ring now instead of later, it's gonna make our lives easier."
"I don't see any problems with that," Ren spoke in agreement. He looked among his companions whilst thinking of something else to say. "Does everyone want to take tonight to complete their preparations and leave in the morning? We can grab whatever else we need in Mountain Glenn before heading further, so don't feel any pressure."
"Maybe we should discuss the ruins themselves," Pyrrha asked before anybody could agree to break for tonight. "I would feel more comfortable if everyone was on the same page now."
Me too...
"Nothing wrong with that," Jaune agreed without pause. "Better to be prepared instead of improvising." He gestured to Blake who began flipping through the book.
"From what I understand, these ruins are typical of pre-Golden Age civilisations," Weiss described. Everyone turned to her as Blake went through the notes. "These cities were not too advanced compared to the next era; however, they make the modern kingdoms appear to be nothing more than remote fishing villages. I would say, these ruins may be around a thousand years old, but are likely younger."
"What should we expect," Pyrrha asked, pressing for more information. "I have never been inside one of these tombs before. In Mistral, it's forbidden."
Maybe they respect the dead more?
Valeans were usually concerned about getting the dead into the ground. There used to be a whole system of honour and tradition that came with it, but most of the time, they just want to keep the soul from turning into a wraith. Different culture from the rest of Remnant regardless, so Ruby was prepared to see how others dealt with their dead.
Wonder what it's like for Atlas and Vacuo?
"Traps, lots and lots of traps," Sun replied in a reluctant tone. "More traps than you can imagine! Draugr are okay to deal with because they're stupid zombies most of the time, but they can set up ambushes too, so it can get kind of dicey. Some are tougher than others, but a lot are basically like undead city guards. If we find the main treasure room, there could be a boss hiding out there. We didn't run into one during our task, but this ruin is in better shape than that one."
"Any mimics," Yang asked with a raised eyebrow.
"None that we saw in the first dungeon," Weiss said.
"There might be some in the antechambers," Blake added on, slightly countering Weiss' statement. "I did not check any of the chests or items personally, so be careful and don't pick anything up randomly."
"From the notes, they say the ruins are in pretty good shape," Ruby pointed out, jumping back into the conversation. "Is there only surface damage or are there rooms we can't get into to?"
Jaune was adamant about the loot lost during a previous expedition. Maybe they needed to bring a pickaxe along with to get into those locked rooms? Someone could be assigned to break into there while the rest moved ahead and cleared the rest of the chambers.
"There was one stairway filled with water," Blake explained, turning to Ruby. "If someone wants to check it out, you can, but it would be better to circle back after we go as far as we can in the tunnels. Once we reach the treasure room, it might not be worth it to spend the time."
Guess I'll just remind myself of those rooms... If we get stopped, then I can check them out.
"We should also agree on a place to quit," Ren proposed earnestly. "If there's too much gold for us to take safely, then it may be a good idea to seal the tomb, so no one else can make it inside. That goes for any injuries we cannot treat with Jaune's healing spells or Weiss' stitching as well."
"I'm with you on that one," Yang agreed, gesturing over to the boy. "If one of us gets hurt, then maybe two or three of us can take them back to a nearby town to get help. Everyone else could start packing or clearing out whatever rooms are left."
"Does that work for everybody?"
Ruby looked around the room and found no one protested. The risks were too significant to abandon caution if one of their group was injured. They were effectively alone out there. It was a startling thought just thinking about what might happen during their journey.
The first big step! Planning!
For an operation this big, I would think adventurers would spend a shit ton of time planning and scouting before considering going down inside some ruins. These ruins will be more akin to the Dwarven Ruins from Skyrim and the Elder Scrolls series, so they'll be pretty fucking dangerous. (Not the in game ruins, but within the lore.)
