Turning around at the knock of the door, I was surprised to see Cullen, Josephine, Leliana and Cassandra all striding inside, standing before my desk. I was thinking this must be the start of some sort of intervention, though I had no idea what I'd done wrong. Placing the piece of paper on the desk, I leaned back in my chair. "Okay, what's going on?"
They all shared a glance. "We've neglected to inform you of something, Inquisitor," Cassandra stated.
"When we left Haven, we had… baggage, if that's what you want to call it," Cullen added.
I looked between all of them again. "What the hell are you lot talking about?"
"We have a guest still sitting in the cells down below, Inquisitor," Josephine explained, "Someone taken from Redcliffe when…"
"Oh fuck, he's still alive!? Why am I only learning this now?!" They all shared a glance again. "I'm assuming you didn't want to tell me for a reason?"
"We had to get the Inquisition running properly, make sure you wanted to do it, then we had to basically sit you down and teach you everything that came with it. Through everything that's happened, well, we kind of forgot about him. I mean, we knew he was still down there but just didn't think of the fact that, as Inquisitor, it would be you who would determine his fate," Cassandra replied.
"You… forgot about him?" I'll admit, I did actually chuckle at that. "Okay, okay. It's fine. So what do we do?"
"Your role as Inquisitor also includes sitting in judgement of those who have committed crimes," Cassandra explained, "You will decide their fate. You alone."
"A grave responsibility," I stated solemnly. The power in my hands was… a little frightening at times, to be honest.
"It is, Inquisitor," Cullen said, "You may show mercy or you believe the crime deserves the harshest of punishments. Only you can decide."
"The, er, chair you requested is nearly completed, Inquisitor. It will take centre stage in the grand hall. There is still a lot of building work taking place, though that is the story across the fortress," Josephine added, "I believe the chair should be in position in two days. If you wish, you may judge Alexius that same day."
"Quicker the better?"
"It is your right to keep him for as long as you wish, but in the end, justice must be delivered," Cullen replied.
I nodded. "Very well. Two days' time then. Make sure everyone is present. You know who I mean."
"As you wish, Inquisitor."
The morning that I was to judge Alexius, I rose early and headed out onto the balcony. The sun had risen but there was still a real chill in the air. It always took time for Skyhold to warm up. I leaned against the railing and appreciated the virtual silence. Leliana wandered out, feeling her arm wrap around me, resting her head on my shoulder. She didn't ask any questions, knowing what I would be thinking about. We only headed inside when Gawen told us breakfast was ready.
Closer to the time, I changed into what was now considered my Inquisition clothing. Long sleeved shirt and jacket, comfortable breeches. I was now cutting my hair and beard shorter. Leliana and Josephine had both suggested going for a more refined look, particularly as more nobles were now visiting Skyhold.
Taking my seat on the throne, I'd discussed with carpenters about a specific looking throne. I wanted dragons on it. Leliana heard and thought it amusing, and suggested symbols of the Inquisition, Andraste and dragons would be more than acceptable. Though I accepted, the people also knew I was not of this world, so above where I would sit was a symbol of Talos. I hadn't explained that much about the gods I'd believed in with most people, though some were at least curious.
Whatever the case, it would be ready for whatever judgement would occur after I had judged Alexius.
I had asked any mage who wished to view proceedings to come and watch, and plenty of others were curious. Fiona was in the first row, watching with interest. Dorian was near the front as well. He had told me that Felix had been released without question, and was likely on his way back to Tevinter. Josephine took her place nearby and introduced Alexius, more for everyone else attending rather than myself.
"You recall Gereon Alexius of Tevinter. Ferelden has given him to us as acknowledgement of your aid. The formal charges are apostasy, attempted enslavement, and attempted assassination… on your own life, no less."
"We may disregard apostasy, Lady Montilyet. Considering the current climate, no mage is part of a Circle, at least in most countries outside Orlais. If the templars were to have their way, they would all be considered apostates."
"As you wish, Inquisitor. Regarding Alexius, Tevinter has disowned and stripped him of rank. You may judge the former magister as you see fit."
"What do we believe Tevinter are trying to say by disowning him?"
Leliana stepped forward. "According to my contacts, former Magister Alexius was operating outside his remit, Inquisitor. Tevinter do not wish war with the southern lands."
"Very well. Thank you, Lady Leliana." I looked back at Alexius. Any fight that was within him had long since disappeared. He had the look of a man who simply awaited death. "These are some very serious charges, Alexius. Slavery has been abolished in these lands for centuries. And assassination of myself and my colleagues is a most serious charge indeed. I don't take kindly to those who try and kill me."
"I couldn't save my son. Do you think my fate matters to me?"
He said nothing else. "Will you offer nothing else in your defence?" Josephine ask.
"I know what it is like to lose a child, Alexius. I've been unfortunate to experience that twice." I think I just revealed something that only Leliana and Varric knew as I saw the looks from my colleagues. Even Josephine looked at me wide-eyed, jaw dropped wide in surprise for a moment. "What I knew while they were growing inside my wife and partner is that I would have done nearly anything for them, to save them, but what you do is simply unforgivable."
He scoffed. "Your children? My own flesh and blood will be dead soon, then it will all be pointless anyway. You've won nothing. The people you saved, the acclaim you've gathered… You'll lose it all in the storm to come. Render your judgement, Inquisitor."
"Before I render judgement, does anyone wish to speak up for this man?" I purposely looked at Dorian. He met my eyes and shook his head. Otherwise, the hall remained silent. I had a feeling some knew what I was probably going to announce. It had been the only thing on my mind since we'd taken him in. "You served a monster, Alexius. There's nothing more to be said. And what you tried to achieve at Redcliffe could have killed us in all the end. The only justice I can think of is at the blade of a sword. You will die for your crimes, Alexius. But not today. You will be given a final meal to enjoy, a shave and a haircut if you wish, and be given clothing for the occasion. If you face death as you have life, then perhaps the Maker will give you mercy for you will find none within these walls. Guards, you may escort the prisoner back to his cell."
Alexius was led away. There were murmurs from the gallery, but there was not a single comment that suggest people vehemently disagreed with my judgement. I gestured for Dorian to approach first. "Do you agree with my judgement?"
"Whether I do or not doesn't matter, Inquisitor. It is your right to judge him. All the good he once stood for, his integrity, his beliefs… He betrayed them all. I won't say he doesn't deserve death. I just wish there'd be another way, but I simply can't think of one. If you released him to the Inquisition, I simply wouldn't trust him. Ever. And, the thing is, he wants to die. Giving him that is, in a way, a blessing. An act of mercy."
"I think that's how he sees it too."
"Thanks for asking though, lord. I appreciate it."
Cullen then approached, and we went over how an execution would proceed. Having never performed one before, I had to rely on those who had performed them. Unfortunately, Cullen did have a track record due to his work within the templars, admitting that he had been witness to more than one mage being killed. In the end, though, it would be simple. There would be a chopping block, a basket for the head, and I would use the Inquisition blade to sever his head at the neck. He would be given the last rites by a chantry mother, he would be allowed some final words, then I would perform the execution. His body would then be interred outside the walls of Skyhold in an unmarked grave.
Leliana could see I was thinking about it even in bed that night, so the chances of intimacy were practically nil. That didn't stop her from cuddling into me, content to simply lie with me as I thought over the decision. To be honest, there was no other decision I could have possibly taken. I certainly couldn't bring myself to show him mercy, at least in the sense of allowing him to live. I thought the only thing worse than death would have been making him Tranquil, but that would have been seen as nothing but vengeance. Death could at least be seen as justice being served. He was guilty, that much was clear.
The execution was performed early in the morning, before breakfast. Alexius had eaten his last meal the night before, had prayed with a Chantry Mother in his cell, was given dark clothing for the occasion, before being led to the platform. He refused the offer of any final words, but accepted the last rites. He refused the offer of a blindfold, simply closing his eyes as he was gently lowered to his knees. From what the guards had told me, he had remained quiet most of the evening, a model prisoner.
Accepting the blade from Cullen, I held it up for the small crowd to see, before I got into position, placing the blade at the back of his neck. I heard Alexius whispering to himself. I couldn't hear what, but if it gave him peace in those last seconds, then I wasn't completely heartless.
Lifting the blade, I swung hard and true. His head dropped into the basket and his body fell over, blood flowing in spurts. Guards immediately stepped forward to grab the body and drag it away. While others may have taken the head and put it on a spike, my Inquisition was not like that. The sentence had been carried out. A coffin lay nearby, where his body was carefully placed inside, and his head was then placed where it had been severed from his neck. His body would now be burned. The hole had already been dug outside, but there would be no ceremony now. His remains would simply be lowered into the hole and covered, eventually to be forgotten.
Somewhat surprisingly, the mood was sombre at dinner that night. Everyone at the table had been present to witness. Guess it was understandable that no-one would be jubilant seeing someone executed. "Ghastly business," Cullen muttered, "You think you've seen one, you've seen them all, but…"
"He went to his death bravely," Cassandra stated, "No matter his crimes, he conducted himself as one would expect in his final hours."
"Word has been sent to the Tevinter Imperium of his execution," Leliana added, "I do not anticipate any negative reaction."
"His son?" I asked Dorian.
"Felix told me that he would write to me upon his return to Tevinter. I will let you know when I've heard from him, my lord."
"Good. Let's just hope I'm not left feeling I need to do that too often going forward."
I spent some time with Evelyn after dinner, hoping she didn't feel neglected, sitting on the grass out in the courtyard, everyone giving us privacy. When I told her that I thought I'd been ignoring her, she laughed and said it was fine, that she spent time with Sera and also Scout Harding, that she wasn't feeling lonely just because we didn't talk often. I'd barely been out of Skyhold since our arrival, still plotting our next moves, and I'd been so preoccupied with everything else, I don't think I'd talked to many people outside my inner circle of Cullen, Josephine and Leliana. Even Cassandra had taken a step back since I'd become Inquisitor, which I didn't really understand. She was still an important figure in the whole thing having set it up. Evelyn also attended these meetings but, while she gave her opinion, everyone now looked at me for a decision.
"Today was another reason why I'm glad. I'm not sure I could condemn a man to death, let alone perform the execution myself," Evelyn confessed.
"It brought me no joy to do it, despite what he did. There is a difference to killing someone on the battlefield to executing a man, or at least I think so. But knowing what power I know hold in my hands, condemning a man… I can understand why those who makes those choices think long and hard. But I can also see now how such power can be abused. I must ensure I remain fair, that I seek only justice, not vengeance."
"Can I ask a question?"
"You can ask me anything, Evie. Nothing will ever be off limits."
"What is my position in regards to all of this now?"
"What do you mean?"
"Apart from this mark…" she trailed off with a shrug.
I wrapped an arm around her waist, and she shuffled closer. "You give the people hope as you are the Herald, Evie. The fact they believe you are the chosen of Andraste seems to inspire them. The fact you are part of this Inquisition, but that you are also by my side as we work to bring order to Thedas, it gives them hope that things will soon be better."
She remained silent before I glanced to see her wipe her cheeks with her free hand. "Wish my family believed in me like you do," she stated with a sigh.
"You've been nothing short of brave through all this, Evie. The way you've been by my side through everything, fighting enemies you'd only find in your darkest nightmares. Even if you were not the Herald, you've earned your right to be part of this."
"This is why I thank the Maker," she whispered. I gave her a gentle squeeze. We sat like that in silence until she needed to get up, her butt getting a little sore from sitting on the hard ground. She laughed when I struggled to get up, my knees cracking as I did so. "Old man," she joked.
"Old enough."
She hugged one last time. "Thank you, Uhtred. Nice to know someone gives a shit about me."
"There are many who do, Evie."
"How are things with Leliana?"
I couldn't help grin at the question, as I knew the intention behind it. "They're great, Evie. No complaints whatsoever. I assume you're asking for a particular reason." She blushed immediately so I took her by the hand, Evelyn stepping in close, needing to arch her neck to meet my eyes. "Evie," I said quietly, "You know I'm attracted. Things are good with Leliana. Now, it might be awkward for you, but I think we involve her, I mean in conversation. She knows of your… attraction towards me, as much as mine towards you."
"Oh…"
"Evie, trust me, considering how old I am now, the thought of a young woman like yourself being interested in me definitely brings fire to the old loins."
"Maker, I can't wait until you just fuck me," she blurted out, immediately embarrassed. So I hugged her tight towards me, feeling her immediately hug me in return. "Sorry, it's just… I've liked you since that first day, Uhtred."
"Evie, I've had some very unsavoury thoughts about you in return. Would you find sitting down with Leliana awkward?"
"Yes. But if she's as open minded as you say."
"You ever been with a woman?" That made her look up, wide-eyed, and I couldn't help grin. "Let's just say Leliana has experience, and after we have some fun together, she might want to join in."
"Really?" she asked quietly.
"During the Blight, Leliana and I had a lot of fun with… someone else." She heard the tone immediately. "Someone I cared for and loved very much. She's still alive but was…" I sighed. "She was made Tranquil."
"Uhtred," she whispered, immediately hugging me tightly.
"Gods, I miss her." Just thinking about her caused me to blink rapidly, leaning down to kiss Evelyn's forehead. "Anyway, sorry to tell you about her like that, but getting back to better topics, we should sit down together and discuss how it will work. But whatever happens between us should just happen naturally, Evie."
"I can wait a little longer, Uhtred. That's what my fingers are for." I definitely looked at her wide eyed as she let me go and stepped back. "Oh please, like that's actually a surprise."
"And who do you think about during those times?"
"You," she stated bluntly, "Can't wait until I have the real thing. Considering how happy Leliana looks each morning, I know I'll be in for a good time."
Gods, she was almost too much, her green eyes staring into mine. There was no missing the look. She wanted me right at that moment. It took all my willpower to step back. I needed to clear my throat, not immediately trusting my voice. "I'd better go," I said.
"I'll speak to you later, Uhtred."
I sighed with relief as she disappeared into the tavern as I stood at the top of the stairs, looking out over Skyhold. I could see Cullen with the engineers, in the middle of organising repair work. Others were constantly coming to and from the grand hall as rebuilding work carried on at breakneck speed. Cassandra had soldiers going through their paces. We'd lost many soldiers at Haven, but the numbers we had recruited almost replaced those lost already. Blackwall kept to himself. I know Leliana had been probing about the Wardens, and admitted to being frustrated by the fact he didn't seem to know anything. Vivienne had made herself comfortably on the second floor of the main hall, overlooking where my throne sat, and she had her own balcony. Dorian liked to sit in the library, where an extensive library was being built. I walked by occasionally to see him in discussions with either Fiona or Solas, or both of them, Vivienne and Evelyn also joining in, where they discussed anything and everything to do with magic.
At the next Council meeting, Josephine was filling me in with the latest news, of nobles who were pledging support to the Council, of where the Inquisition could head next to restore order. I had plenty of options regarding that, it was a case of deciding where to send the scouts first. I was ready to dismiss everyone when Josephine cleared her throat. "Inquisitor, there is one other matter we must discuss. It is to do with Lady Trevelyan."
I glanced at Evie, as she looked at me, surprise and concern in equal measure. "Okay, what is it?"
"It is to do with her family, lord. Well, there are a number of issues but there are two that you must know about. The first is that distant relatives of Lady Trevelyan may be sullying our good name. It will cause nothing but embarrassment, but even that could affect our gaining of influence in the Free Marches, if people believe that we are represented by such people."
"Okay, what's the second issue?"
"Her parents and immediate family, lord. They are…" Josephine paused, glancing at Evie next to me, before continuing. "They are issuing statements claiming she is a heretic, lord. And that is perhaps the nicest thing they are saying about her. I have one of their statements here."
"Give it to me."
I saw her hand shake slightly handing it over, so I think she knew I was going to react. I read the words through once and felt my blood start to boil. I read them through again and I definitely glared around the room. Even Cullen took a step backwards. "They would write such things about their daughter?" I crumpled the letter in my fist before slamming it on the table. "Commander, how long will it take me to get to Ostwick from here?"
"Inquisitor, you can't…"
"No-one writes such garbage about Evie. No-one! They want to pick a fight; they can pick one with the fucking Dragonborn."
"Inquisitor, you cannot make this matter personal," Josephine stated.
"Not personal? They just made it personal with the accusations they've raised."
I felt a hand on my forearm, glancing to see Evie looking at me. "I want to read it." I shook my head but she held out a hand. "I have a right to know what they wrote about me, Uhtred."
I sighed, handing her the letter. Watching her carefully smooth it out, she started to read. Within seconds, her eyes started to water, covering her mouth to hold back the sob that quickly escaped her. I'm not sure if she even read the whole thing, but she put the letter down and ran out of the room in tears. I turned back to the others. "Commander, Ostwick. How do I get there and how quickly?"
"Everyone out," Leliana ordered.
"No, Leliana. If they want…"
"Out now. And don't you dare move, Uhtred."
Everyone departed quickly, Leliana following them so she could lock the door and turn back to me. Approaching me carefully, she stopped inches away. "What have they done?"
Before I knew it, I needed to wipe my cheeks. "They fucking disowned her, Leliana. Their own daughter. Disowned her, said explicitly she was no longer their daughter. She might be their blood, but that was it. Written out of the family. Told her the Maker would never accept her. Said they would ensure her name would be ruined across Thedas if she continued this charade, but that she would never be accepted back into the family. Then what they accused her of regarding… with me…" I lowered my head, taking a deep breath. "She's got no-one now. They've abandoned her."
Leliana grabbed both my hands, beckoning me to look up. "She's got you," she said softly.
"What am I to her? I'm not family. The people who should love her unconditionally have just thrown her to the wolves."
Giving me a soft kiss, she replied, "Uhtred, she has you. Everyone can see the affection you two share. I admit, it's lovely to see how you have connected with someone so much younger than yourself, but it's obvious that you care. It's clear to everyone how much she already adores you. She looks up to you, wishes to follow your example. Considering she's a mage, you're already her hero because of everything you've done."
"It shouldn't be me. What they've said… No father should write such things about their own flesh and blood. He called her a whore, Leliana. His own daughter, called her that and other vile names."
"That reflects on him, on them, rather than on her or you." She squeezed my hands again. "But going to Ostwick is the wrong reaction, Uhtred. He's clearly trying to provoke one and you're doing exactly what he wants."
"I'll do it properly. I'll challenge him to a duel or something."
That made her chuckle. "Well, you are learning the ways of the nobility, it seems. Do you know the best thing to do? Don't react and I'll handle it. A few carefully worded statements will do just the trick. I'll make them look like fools. And it won't need to get violent." She could see I was tense, running her hands up and down my arms. "They want to make you angry, Uhtred. They want to destroy her and make the Inquisitor dance for them. Don't let them control you."
"Imagine what I'd do if it was about you…"
"I almost dread to think." She grabbed the letter, handing to me. "Burn it, Uhtred. It means nothing. They are nothing. You are the Inquisitor. You will bring peace to the land. And Evelyn will continue to be the beacon of hope everyone needs. Otherwise, fuck them." My eyes definitely widened. The only time Leliana cursed was in the bedroom. My reaction made her smile. "I mean it. Fuck. Them."
I sighed, not feeling any better, but I knew she was offering sensible advice. "I'd better go find her. She's going to be so heartbroken."
"And Cullen? What should I tell him?"
"I'm not going to Ostwick."
She leaned up to kiss my cheek. "Good. I'd miss you if you were gone too long."
"Knew there was an ulterior motive."
Walking through the grand hall, I first headed to the enormous fireplace and threw the letter on top, watching it burn. Varric noticed and asked what it was. "Worthless words from a pack of arseholes," I growled. I headed to Evelyn's bedroom, but there was no sign of her. I asked around but no-one had seen her come out. I spent quite a few minutes searching, and I did grow a little concerned. But I eventually found her on the battlements, far away from where everyone was. She was sitting on the edge, legs dangling over the other side, glancing as I approached.
"Don't worry, I'm not going to hurl myself off," she said, chuckling but it caught in her throat.
"I'm sorry. You didn't deserve to read any of that."
"At least I know the truth now. I've always wondered what they thought of me, because I carried magic. Because of their association with the Chantry and to the Templar Order, I've always been… looked down upon by everyone sharing my surname. Some people would suggest I should find the whole idea liberating, I can now be rid of the name now they want nothing to do with me." She paused and looked out across the mountains. "Still hurts though. My own parents think I'm worthless. Their own flesh and blood."
I walked towards her, not surprised she turned around so she could hug me. "I give you my word, Evie. You've always got me. We'll get through all this together, then whenever you need me going forward, even if I'm old and grey, you ever need help, all you need do is ask."
She tightened her grip around me, and when I felt her start to shake, I knew she was crying again. I lifted her up, feeling her head rest on my shoulder. I waited until she'd got it all off her chest. I didn't really mind how long it took.
Finally letting her go, I suggested we gather everyone and enjoy a drink that evening, take her mind off everything. She smiled and said it was a great idea. So I personally headed around and practically ordered everyone to the tavern for the evening. A few of them obviously wondered why but I just told them it's a good excuse to finally get together as a team. Since arriving in Skyhold, things had been so hectic, we hadn't had a chance to get together and relax.
The last person I told was Leliana, of course, and she knows exactly what I'm trying to do. After we'd enjoyed a quiet dinner that evening, we head to the tavern where most of those I'd invited were already sitting, having taken over one of the larger tables. Upon the arrival of Leliana and I, tankards are raised in salute as I took a seat, though only after moving Evie to the head of the table. I didn't drink too much myself, keeping an eye on Evie the entire time, making sure she was enjoying herself. The attraction between her and me was probably obvious by now, but no-one mentioned it. Iron Bull definitely had a soft spot for her too, as did Blackwall. Solas was impressed at how interested in all things magic and the Fade she was. Vivienne saw a potential ally in regarding the rebuilding of Circles. Everyone had a great time, and I think it may have been the first time that the memories of Haven didn't linger in the background. Instead, people spoke of the future, even looking as far ahead as defeating Corypheus. Perhaps confidence was that high already. I could only hope I could lead us to that promise.
Leliana surprised me by suggesting she would head to bed. When I made to follow her out, she stopped me at the door, laying a kiss on my cheek. "Stay here and spend the night with her."
"Huh?"
"I'm not saying you need to be intimate, but everyone is aware of your mutual affection, Uhtred. You do realise that, right?"
"Well, probably…"
"Uhtred, there's a good chance she's already fallen for you. Young woman like that with someone like you. It's definitely love already."
"I did suggest we sit down and talk to you about it."
"No need. If you just spend the night cuddling, that's fine. If you end up being intimate, then I think it's just what she needs. The man who would go all the way to Ostwick for her, duel her parents over it? That shows how much you care for her too, Uhtred." She kissed my other cheek. "And before you start worrying, I will let you know something. I think she's bloody gorgeous too." I leaned back and grinned. "Does the idea of two redheads interest you, Uhtred?"
"I do wonder what I've done to deserve all this."
"Well, you love me regardless, ready to give up everything for me." With a last kiss, she bid me goodnight as I headed back to the table.
I refrained from drinking too much more, noticing Evelyn do the same thing, as the night slowly but surely wound down until there were not many of us left. Bull could probably keep drinking constantly and not have it affect him, so I eventually called it a night, Evelyn immediately adding she would do the same thing. Once outside, I took her by the hand but let her take the lead towards her bedroom. Once inside and the door locked behind her, I sensed her nerves. "Evie, we don't need to do anything tonight except…"
She reached behind her and must have unzipped her robes, as they tumbled to the floor, leaving her before me in just her underwear. She was youthful, that was for sure. Perky breasts. Slim. Great pair of legs, despite the fact she wasn't particularly tall. I definitely grinned as she tried to appear confident but I could sense her nerves increase. So I stepped towards her, resting a hand on her soft skin at her back as I pulled her into me, leaning down and wasting no time kissing her for the first time. Again, some nerves but, once she accepted my tongue, she was eager to please. She was a pretty good kisser for someone who had already told me she hadn't had a lot of experience.
Taking off her bra was easy before I helped take off her panties, leaving her naked with me completely dressed. I don't think she really cared as I helped lift her up and carried her to the bed, her legs wrapped around me, before I lowered her down.
She looked up at me, eyes wild with desire, and I definitely smirked. I could have suggested anything in that moment, and I have no doubt she would have agreed. "Evelyn, can I be blunt as I think that will make all this easier?" She nodded eagerly. "We won't make love or fuck tonight. What I am going to do is give your entire body attention… then I'm going to eat your pussy and make you cum hard. How does that sound?"
"Please," she almost whimpered.
I didn't undress simply because I didn't trust myself. If I did, we'd end up fucking. I didn't want to do that just yet. So I showered her in attention, and it was obvious she'd never been with a lover as experienced as myself. I found all those little zones on her body that increased her desire, her want and need for me. Her breasts were not large, no more than a handful, nipples eventually hard enough to cut glass. And by the time I was ready, she was almost dripping wet.
She tasted divine, enough that even I groaned as I started to eat her out. Didn't take long at all for her to orgasm the first time. She cried afterwards so I needed to stop and hold her, and only then did she giggle at the fact I was still dressed. Then I continued, and I didn't count how many she had, just that I needed to eventually stop as my jaw was aching. Only then did I strip down to my underwear and lay beside her, as she was practically asleep by then.
Waking the next morning, she was ever so affectionate, and we spent a little time making out until there was a knock on the door. I thought it was a steward. Instead, Leliana poked her head in the door, immediately smiling at Evelyn cuddled into my side. "Breakfast is nearly ready," she said, stepping inside and closing the door. I could sense Evelyn was a little embarrassed, even nervous, so Leliana walked over and sat on the edge of the bed. "Evelyn, did you enjoy last night?"
"Yes," she whispered.
"Good, because I will tell you right now, you will enjoy many more nights together. You might be a little young to understand, but all I can say is that Uhtred and I love each other, but we also love to enjoy sex with others too."
"Uhtred said you…"
"That's for later, Evie. Right now, it's about you and Uhtred." She looked at me. "I thought you'd look far smugger at conquering a young woman like her."
"I haven't 'conquered' anyone just yet."
"Oh? So…" Her eyes lit up. "Ah, let me guess, it was just that talented tongue of yours?" Evie burst into giggles but I felt her nod. "You're a very lucky woman, Evie. Good thing that Uhtred simply adores doing it. Sometimes I have to remind him that there are other things than just spending his entire time with his head between my legs."
"I wouldn't complain," she whispered.
"True, it is a great way to spend a night. But just wait until he's inside you. Maker, you will desire it all the time after that first time."
"Oh really?" I asked.
Leliana just scoffed. "Your ego is large enough as it is. And as I said, breakfast is ready so enough lazing around. Evelyn, I will put this simply for you to understand. Though I would love his company in our bed all the time, I know how much you like him. When we're all here, I'd rather he be with me. When you're not here, well, let your imagination run wild."
"Okay," she said softly.
She leaned over and patted her leg. "I know it's a lot for you, Evie. Solona was just the same as you. Liked Uhtred immediately, wanted to be with him intimately, but knew I was the object of his affections too. Trust me, this will work because I want it, Uhtred wants it, and you do too."
"What about others?" she asked.
"Then we discuss it. Communication is vital for all of this to work. I'd rather not share him with too many women but… well, the Maker works in mysterious ways." She stood up and walked to the door, turning back once it was open. "I'll see you in the hall."
I got out of bed first and started to dress, Evelyn still a little embarrassed. In the cold light of day, I certainly understood. When she finally threw back the covers, my eyes definitely drank her in again before I turned around and gave her a little privacy to get ready. Walking into the hall hand in hand, the table certainly grew quiet as we took a seat, noticing Leliana left space for Evelyn and I could sit together with her.
"So…" Varric started to ask, "So… um…"
I looked around the table. Only Leliana had been there during the Blight so they simply wouldn't have known. "Who had a good night in the tavern last night?" I asked.
Everyone said they did and, though it took a little coaxing, the conversation eventually moved on, realising that I certainly wasn't going to discuss my personal life in that moment.
We were only a day or two out from departing for an area of Ferelden known as the Fallow Mire when I received a surprise. And I'm still not sure whether to call it a good one or not. I was in the middle of sparring with Cassandra, both of taking it easy, otherwise we'd start lumping seven bells out of each other, ending up bleeding and bruised, but neither of us wanted to lose either, so it still competitive. One of the guards approached, clearing his throat. I was distracted, Cassandra whacking me with the flat of her sword on my shoulder. "I win."
"Bah, I was distracted."
"The Inquisitor shouldn't be so easily distracted." I snorted but saw her point immediately, bowing her in her direction. "I'm going to pay for that later, aren't I?"
"Good thing we were using wooden swords."
Handing off the sword to one of the other soldiers, I followed the guard down to the gate. No idea what I was being summoned, surely they could handle… I came to halt when I recognised the woman standing there. Shit. "Something wrong, Inquisitor?" the guard asked, "Is she trouble?"
I almost laughed though not through happiness nor delight. "No. Not trouble…"
She took a couple of steps towards me, dropping her bag to the ground, folding her hands in front of her. Face complete devoid of any expression. Utterly blank. "Uhtred," she stated, her voice flat and monotone.
I swallowed before replying. "Solona. Um, what are you doing here?"
"My presence has been requested."
"By who?"
"Grand Enchanter Fiona. I am the replacement for Minaeve."
"Min… But she's still here?"
"I only know my presence has been requested, Uhtred."
Gods, every time she said my name without a flicker of emotion, it was a dagger to the heart. I'll be honest, after leaving her at the Circle Tower in Ferelden, I had never wanted to see her again. The memories were simply too painful. I remembered the bubbly, sweet, talented woman she had once been, replaced by the shell of a human she was now. Gawen was going to be terribly upset when he learned of her arrival.
"Would you like help with your things?"
"I packed light. I can carry them. It is of no trouble."
"Okay. Sure."
I led her up the stairs, past the courtyard and the tavern, up the other flight of stairs into the grand hall. Varric was the first one to notice her arrival. "Holy shit," I heard him mutter, "Um, nice to see you, Solona."
"You too, Varric. Are you well?"
"Um…" For once, the dwarf was speechless. "Sure, sure. Still getting into mischief with Uhtred. You know how it is."
Solona simply blinked. Before Tranquillity, she'd have made a joke at my expense about all the trouble we'd be causing. Now I looked at her and nothing. Absolutely nothing. Of course, word about her arrival would have spread quickly, so before I could escort her upstairs, Leliana came bounding out of the door from her place in the tower. She skidded to a stop, I think surprised that it was true. She hadn't seen Solona since it happened. I'd told her about it, and she'd been terribly upset. But now seeing it with her own eyes…
Watching her approach, the tears were not a surprise. They had once been the closest of friends. They should have been rivals, jealous of each other when we had been in a relationship, but they had always been close, and had even been lovers from time to time. That was in the distant pass though. Leliana hugged her, of course, but although Solona hugged her back, it was simply an automatic or learned reaction. There was no feeling there.
"Good to see you, Solona. Are you well?"
"I am." Leliana leaned back, still grasping her by the shoulders. "Do not cry. It was for the best. I am no longer a danger to anyone."
It was too much for her, choking back a sob as she shook her head. I gently grabbed her hand and pulled her towards me, feeling her head against my chest, gently caressing her hair. Solona just looked at me. "Where am I going, Uhtred?"
"Why don't I show her?" I heard Evelyn suggest, appearing from the same door as Leliana. She walked forward, offering her hand. "Hello, I'm Evelyn though most people call me Evie. Uhtred started it."
Solona shook her hand. "I'm Solona."
"I don't think Uhtred has mentioned you yet." I had but Evelyn was smart. "I'll be sure to ask him all about you later. Do you know him?"
"Yes. We are both veterans of the Fifth Blight."
"Evie…" I said. When she met my eyes, I shook my head. "Please, later."
"Sure. So, Solona, I'm assuming you are the replacement for Minaeve? Poor girl. What happened in Haven did a number on a lot of people so it's no wonder you're here now. Follow me, I'll help set you up, show you around, and introduce you to some others. You'll probably be working with us mages mostly." Evelyn inundated her with information as she walked away, eventually disappearing through the same door she'd entered.
"Thank the gods for that girl sometimes," I muttered.
"Uhtred, I…"
I shushed her. "Trust me, the day it happened, I was very close to burning down that entire tower."
"For what they did to her, I can understand your hatred for the Order."
"It's the main reason why I'd never forgive, never work with them. Why is she here now though? She said Fiona requested…"
"She probably didn't request Solona. She's likely just asked those who remained at the Ferelden Circle for an expert and sent her." Leliana finally leaned back. "Will it be too much for you? I'm sure they could send someone else."
"No. It's fine. Doubt I'll have all that much to do with her anyway. Still, what an absolute kick in the balls that is. Did not expect that waking up this morning." I took a deep breath. "I'd better tell Gawen. He adored her and was heart-broken when we took her back to the Circle. If he sees her without letting him know, he'll probably drop dead."
"I'll head back to work," she said, kissing my cheek.
Having to tell Gawen was perhaps the most difficult. He'd been racked with guilt when they'd taken her while I was in the Deep Roads, and that guilt only grew worse when I returned with Solona changed forever. But what surprised me is the fact he wanted to see her, so I led him up the tower, Evelyn still showing her around. When he saw her, the tears were immediate. No reaction from Solona, of course, but in that moment, she seemed to… understand, though at least she didn't try and justify what was done to her this time. She simply accepted his hug before he turned away, rested a hand on my forearm and thanked me, before he disappeared.
"Evie, if you'd like to let Solona know when we eat, I'm sure she'd like some dinner later."
"Of course, Uhtred."
"I'll… see you later, Solona."
"You will as I'm here permanently now, Uhtred."
With a sigh, I turned and headed back downstairs, strode through the throne room, and headed outside the courtyard when everyone was training. I needed to hit something, or be hit myself. I needed to feel something after that. Cassandra wasn't willing to fight me this time, so she grabbed Iron Bull, though made sure we only had wooden weapons.
"Don't go easy," I growled as he stood before me.
He just chuckled. "Sure thing, boss. Now, will I be in trouble if I knock you out?"
"I'd probably like it right now."
I hit him hard a few times, and that's when he realised I wasn't playing around. Should have remembered he was actually bigger than me, therefore hit harder. Still, I may have been sore and bleeding when we were done later, but once we lowered our swords, we collapsed against each other, laughing away. "No idea what that was all about, boss, but glad you're back to normal."
"Thanks, Bull. Glad you could take it and dish it out too."
"Sure thing. Now, I don't know about you, but I'm going for a drink."
"I'd better not, otherwise I'll end up wallowing in self-pity again."
"Bad day or bad thing?"
"Reminder of a bad thing arrived today."
"Ah, say no more. Well, if you want to wet your whistle, you'll know where to find me." He turned and threw the sword towards Cassandra. "Catch!"
Cassandra caught it then looked at me, shaking her head. "You should sort your face out. There's a bit of blood." She added, muttering under her breath, "Idiot."
Still, it worked, I didn't think of Solona again until I was back in my bedroom, Gawen attending to the blood and scratches on my face. I knew I was going to have to get away for a few days now, just to get my mind straight once again.
