Four years later

Her eyes looked at the bottom right corner of her computer for the thousandth time that day,11.45am. She still had fifteen minutes of work and then she will have the rest of the day off. That was the problem of when your husband is also your work partner, the two of them needed the day off but that would have meant no work for the day and since it was Cal's birthday she offered to be the one who worked half of the day, just to check everything they needed to do.

Once the clock showed12pmshe immediately got up from her chair and took her jacket.

"Derek, I'm leaving, see you tomorrow" she said peeking from the glass door of his office.

"Byrne can I talk to you for a second?" he asked.

"Ok" she simply answered, she just hoped it would be quick.

"I got a new job opportunity, the New York bureau asked me to be in charge of the FBI organization there" he stated as she sat on the chair in front of her.

"Wow Derek, congratulations! That's awesome!" it was a great opportunity for him, she had known him for a lot and he deserved it.

"It is, but I need someone that can make things work here, someone who is a leader, someone incorruptible and that has enough experience to rule this place" he explained and she looked at him confused.

"That someone is you. If you take the offer you can take my placein two weeks" he said.

"What? Me? Two weeks? What about the case? I don't think Cal and I can solve itin two weeks, that's some serious shit" she pointed out shocked.

Her? As the bureau chief? Was she even able to rule the entire place? She would have liked it for sure, it was a big opportunity for her and the fact that Crown had thought about her made her feel really honored.

"I think Isaac can figure it out by himself or you can still help him but I assure you that you'll have a lot of paperwork to fill" he chuckled.

"You don't have to answer now, but the sooner the better because you're my first choice" he explained and she interrupted him immediately.

"Ok, I take it" it was her shot, she couldn't take this opportunity down.

"Ok, we're gonna talk about this properly tomorrow, I don't wanna steal your time any more, I just wanted to know if you were interested" he pointed out.

"Ok, see you tomorrow then" she said before leaving.

She got into her car and headed home, Cal and Alison were waiting for her to have lunch together after going to the park, or at least that's what Cal told her, she actually didn't know if they went there or somewhere else. When she opened the house's door she saw Cal standing in front of her setting the table.

"You're back!" he said heading towards her to leave a small kiss on her lips.

She was about to answer when her daughter's voice interrupted her.

"Mommy! Look!" Alison shouted from the living room floor.

Emily took a few steps to see her better and her jaw dropped.

"Cal... is it ours?" she started.

"Oh yeah that... let's say it was either that or a husky puppy" he pointed out.

"It wasn't supposed to be neither of them where did you even took it?!" she questioned, weren't they supposed to go to the park?

"She saw a billboard and she asked what it was, I explained her it was a shelter where animals that don't have a home live before finding a owner... so she asked me to visit it and she fell in love with him and the husky puppy" he explained.

"So you thought that taking a kitten instead of an husky puppy would be better?!" she asked.

"It's smaller... and she gave me the look" that look was actually such a big problem for him, he just couldn't say no when she looked up at him with those big hazel eyes pleading him, Emily knew how to turn it down but he didn't.

"Let me get this straight... I left you two this morning knowing you would have gone to the park and now we have a kitten?" she just wanted to be sure.

"His name is Tiger!" Alison said proudly.

Emily's eyes turned to look at Cal. Tiger? Really?!

"Don't look at me, she cose it" he raised his hands, pointing at Alison.

"Baby why did you called him Tiger?" she asked, kneeling in front of her.

"Because he's red and tigers are orange so it's good" Alison explained her.

"She has a point" Cal defended her, making Emily chuckle.

Was it even a correlation? Maybe for a four years old it was. She wasn't mad at Cal for buying a cat, she actually loved animals, she had a dog so having a cat was just new. But she liked the fact that kids would grow up in a house with an animal, Flynn did that too. She extended her arm to pet the little cat in front of her, Alison was running a hand slowly on his back as he was sleeping, obviously Cal had already taught her how to behave and to be gentle. She got up from the floor to help cal set the table and to cook.

"She's really your daughter... tiger" he sad, mixing the pasta.

"She must have gotten her dad's sense of humor" she chuckled.

"So you're not angry?" he asked quite scared.

"I'm not, just next time... give me a call before bringing home any sort of new member of the family cause I would warn you some time before" she smiled.

"I will" he smiled.

"So, I got an offer today" Emily started, she had already accepted but she would have liked to know his opinion on it.

"what offer?" Cal asked curious.

"Crown got a transfer and he offered me to take his actual place as bureau chief" she explained.

"Oh my God Em that's great! You said yes right?" he said enthusiastic.

"I did. We'll talk better about it tomorrow but I should be in chargein two weeks" she was so excited.

"I'll miss having you as my partner but I'm so happy for you" he pulled her in, leaving a kiss on her lips.

"Ew stop" they heard Alison say.

"Ali mommy got a new job! She is the boss now!" Cal said proudly.

"But mommy is already the boss here" Alison said confused.

"No baby, at work. I'll be the boss at work" Emily said picking Alison up.

"So now you'll be daddy's boss at work too?" she asked, making Emily chuckle.

"I will" she simply answered.

"You know I will be a boss too when I'll grow up, just like you. But I will be a princess so I will wear a dress" Alison explained.

"A princess? Wow! That's a big plan" Emily answered surprised and Alison nodded as Emily helped her sitting on the chair.

"Yes! And we will all live in my castle. You two, brother Flynn, uncle Jack, all my grandparents and Nick too!" she pointed out.

In the last years things got better for them, Nick and Flynn could finally come back to Boston and Flynn started a private school, just in case. Everyone was a bit shocked at the FBI but they understood the situation. They could even attend their wedding which had been two years after Cal's proposal. They just wanted to wait for Alison to grow up a bit so she could stay with with her grandparents while they spent a week away for their honeymoon.

Once they finished eating Alison run to her room to pick up something, just to come back holding a paper and showing it proudly to Cal.

"Daddy this is your birthday present I made it" she said showing her drawing.

"Look this is you, this is mummy, this is me and I added tiger this morning" she said proudly.

"Honey that's beautiful, thank you so much" he picked her up, kissing her cheek as she wrapped her arms around his neck.

Alison was such a daddy's girl and she loved to cuddle with both of them. She also started questioning about a lot of things, like that time when, a few weeks before due to the hot summer weather, Cal was shirtless and she asked why dad had drawings on his body. They told her it was because they had a meaning and he liked them and at that point Alison took a sharpie and wrote her name on his arm, it was actually the only word she was able to write, and she got so sad when she didn't saw it the following day. So they explained her that those drawings were made with a particular ink that can't be washed and in that moment Emily got an idea for Cal's birthday present.

"Mommy listen!" her daughter's voice distracted her from her thoughts, she didn't even noticed that Cal had put her down and she was now petting the kitten.

"He's purring! Only cats purr right mommy?" she asked, looking up at her.

"I think so" Emily chuckled.

"Are you sure? I clearly remember someone in this room that can purr too" Cal whispered in her ear as he hugged her from behind.

"Shush don't" she whispered too, blushing.

"You can't deny it" he teased.

"Shut up or I'm not giving you your present" she said raising an eyebrow at him.

"So you got me something" he pointed out, she didn't have to actually, so it would have been ok even if she didn't.

"Tonight" she simply said, unwrapping his arms from her body before joining Alison on the floor.

They spent the whole day together, Emily had to get used to the little animal that suddenly started running everywhere and tried to jump on every piece of furniture, obviously failing due to its small size. It was like having another baby to take care of, but he will soon learn how to do it. After dinner Alison asked if Tiger could sleep on her bed, but actually they decided it would have been better if he slept on the floor since they weren't sure he could jump off the bed on his own and they didn't want him to get hurt. So they placed his bed on Alison's bed feet and just put him in there, hoping he would stay there for the night.

"Soo what's my gift?" Cal said as he closed their bedroom door, after putting Alison to sleep.

"I have two gifts for you" she said, suddenly nervous.

She went towards the nightstand and picked up a box and two letters. He handled him the first letter and he slowly opened it confused.

"I thought that since a sharpie won't last you may want to get a real tattoo with her name" she smiled as he looked at the tatto's shop gift card.

"I love it! Thank you so much! I actually wanted to make it too, guess you anticipated me" he smiled widely at her.

"I'm glad you like it" she started.

"Now, this other gift is something you've been kinda asking for a lot" she chuckled, but he could detect she suddenly got more nervous.

She handled him the letter first and he looked at him confused. He slowly opened it and he found a folded paper with just a gummy bear attached to it and a sentence.

"I'm this small now but I'll grow up" he read confused.

"Wait I don't get it, is that one of those things that you put into water and get bigger?" he asked, he actually didn't get it.

"A what? No that's a normal gummy bear. It was just symbolic I think but now I feel stupid" she said nervous.

"No I mean I'm the stupid one, I don't get it" he said and she handled him the small box she was holding.

He ripped the paper slowly and he opened the box, looking immediately up at her.

"Is it old?" he simply asked.

"It's not" she shook her head.

"First one?" he asked still looking at her.

"Fifth, all the same" she smiled and his eyes widened.

"You're pregnant..." he said shocked.

"I am" she couldn't even smile after saying it because his lips found hers immediately, as his arms took her up, making her spin around for a bit.

"You can't understand how hard it was for me to keep it from you for more than a week" she smiled up at him, looking into his now glossy eyes.

"It's ok, I'm just so happy, this is the best birthday ever" he kissed her again, not really knowing what to say.

Actually neither of them knew what to say, the happiness was just too much. Their little family was getting bigger and their love was still there since day one, getting stronger every day. Marrying him was actually one of the best decisions of her life, her first wedding finished due to a bigger circumstance but she would never know if it would have lasted. Although, as soon as Cal proposed to her she knew he was gonna be the man she would have spent the rest of her life with.

If six years before someone had told her that she would have met the most amazing and caring man ever, fall in love again, had sex with him on a train in Europe while trying to rescue her ex husband, got pregnant, had the most beautiful daughter in the world and she would have married that man, she wouldn't have believed it. She would have thought it was a joke, she would have never thought about the possibility to love again. Six years before her life was pure hell, always trying to fight PTSD or running from the police, thinking about having a normal life was just way far from her thoughts. But life moves on, and sometimes what you think would be impossible is just there waiting for you to take the risk, jump and reach it.
