Looking out the window, Madelyn hid a yawn with her hand.
"Are you feeling well, dear?" Lady Celian spoke up from the chair beside the younger seamstress.
Madelyn looked up and smiled. "Just a little tired, thank you." Madelyn turned her eyes towards the embroidered fabric in her hands, a new present for a certain servant girl. Madelyn had time to spend with the old seamstress, both needing support and being there for her friend.
"I've heard what you did, last night." At the gentle and kind words, Madelyn looked from her hands to the older, kind eyes. "Agravaine told me." Madelyn smiled slightly and looked out the window.
"I only wished I could've done more..." Madelyn's words were quiet and pained.
"No, don't you think or speak like that." Celia spoke up, stern in her voice. Surprised by the tone, Madelyn looked up and saw Celia standing up and walking towards her. As the elder seamstress reached the younger, she reached out and grabbed Madelyn's hands, making Madelyn stand up aswell. "You, my dear successor, have the kindest heart and most gentle soul. But right now you're wrong. There is nothing else you could've done. I've heard that it's actually thanks to you that the king isn't dead already." During her speaking, Celia moved her hands to the cheeks of Madelyn, and she spoke softer and kinder for every word. At the end, both were smiling and Madelyn nodded as Celia raised her eyebrow at the end.
After a hug, they both went back to speaking about other things such as sewing and eventually, Sir Lancelot.
"I'm simply curious, dear. You two have been courting quite some time now." Celia smiled over the goblet as she drank.
Madelyn shook her head smiling. "You and everyone else in this court. I had lord Agravaine ask me not too many days ago." Hearing Madelyn speak of the uncle, Celia gave an approving hum making Madelyn look up. Celia was smiling to herself.
"So... speaking of Lord Agravaine." As Madelyn said his name, Celia smiled slightly wider. "I've noticed give started calling him Agravaine, no Lord..."
Slightly shocked, Celia looked up. "W-what?" A small blush started spreading on the older woman's cheeks. Afted a short moment of silence and with a sigh she leaned closer to Madelyn. "The man is very polite and kind, but there is just ... something. "
This surprised Madelyn. Not only Merlin, but Celia was feeling hesitant aswell? She needed to make a true opinion herself. "Something?"
Celia snapped out of whatever wrinkling thoughts she had and waved had hand dismissively with a smile. "Just an old woman's speculation. Don't let it bother you."
Madelyn tried.
Walking down the stairs from the castle to the courtyard, Madelyn's thoughts were occupying her everything and so she was very surprised when a flower filled the space of her sight.
"A flower for your thoughts?" Lancelot smiled up at her as he stood two steps down. Smiling wide Madelyn took the flower in her hand.
"Simply thoughts I'm glad to be distracted from." At her words, Lancelot smiled wider and offered her his elbow.
On their walk through Camelot, both of them met and greeted many people. Young as old, wealthy and those with less. Madelyn's favorit was meeting the young boy, Tim, who's dreams seemed fulfilled when both Madelyn and Lancelot spoke to him. Madelyn about how much help Tim had been the night before when she was looking for Lancelot, which the knight thanked the young for and also let the boy look at his sword. Unfortunately the boy had to run along very soon. Too soon for all of them.
"I don't think I've seen someone's eyes that big before." Madelyn laughed as they spoke about Lancelot letting Tim touch the hilt of the sword. Lancelot chuckled and nodded.
"I hope he follows and reaches his dreams and becomes a knight." Madelyn agreed.
After some time, they eventually came back to the castle.
"Have you seen Merlin at all today? I haven't seen him or prince Arthur at all today." Madelyn spoke as she looked around as if she would see him but as she saw the slight change in Lancelot's face she knew she wouldn't find him. "Lancelot... where is he?" Madelyn used her extra gentle and kind voice.
Feeling her eyes at him, he cursed his weak mind and heart that he wasn't stronger against that soft voice and he gently tugged her to her chambers.
The door to the physician's chambers opened, not so gently, and Madelyn walked in. Thankfully Gaius was alone.
"Please, Gaius, tell me Merlin isn't as foolish as to pretend to be the old sorcerer again, and risking his life." Madelyn stopped in the middle of the room, keeping her firm but worried look at him. Lancelot soon followed and closed the door, huffing slightly as he had problem following his lady up all the stairs. He blamed his chainmail.
Gaius sighed loudly before answering. "I wish I could."
The angered she just felt, was suddenly deflated as she saw his worried state, amd Madelyn could tell Gaius was just as against this as she was and so she decided to not take this any further.
As soon as Madelyn saw her brother back in Camelot, she wished she could've run after him, but sadly the situation she was in made it impossible.
Next time she saw him, he was running around the his room with books that she wasn't sure were allowed at all.
When the evening and night approached, she walked up to Merlin who stood by the window and looked out. He was tapping his fingers against his legs.
"I have full faith that you'll do the best you can." Merlin quickly looked to his left and at his smiling sister and his shoulders visibly relaxed. Smiling and nodding confidently, he looked back out at the setting sun.
"I know I can do this."
Madelyn's heart nearly stopped beating as she heard the warning bells ring in the night. Sharing a glance with the physician, she felt her heart freeze as she saw the same worry in his eyes. All she could hope for was that Lancelot was the knight to find Merlin, and not someone else.
Soon she was alone as Gaius was called to the king's chambers with haste, all she could do was wait.
After what felt like hours, the door opened and Gaius walked in first and after him, Merlin. Seeing her brother alive, Madelyn hurried to stand up and walked towards him.
"The spell was working." As Merlin spoke up, Madelyn stopped in her walk. "I'm sure of it. I did everything right. I don't know what happend."
Before Madelyn could speak, Gaius spoke up.
"I think I do." And as the old physician turned around, both siblings saw something in his hand. It was a silver charm. "I found it around Uther's neck. It's been enchanted and such an enchantment would reverse the effects of your healing spells. Uther didn't stand a chance."
Madelyn felt sadness as she realised who could've done such a thing. "Morgana..."
Everyone shared a heavy sigh. "I believe so."
Madelyn had never thought the day when Arthur would take Uther's place would feel so... sad. Of course she knew it would mean grief, but after hearing Merlin repeat Arthur's harsh words about magic and seeing her brother actually cry, no. She had never expected that.
And she couldn't even comfort him enough because he was soon called to do his duty to help prepare the prince.
"Merlin-"
"He needs me. I need to be there for him." And with those words Merlin had left.
Warm and strong arms wrapped themselves around her and as she turned around she was held close and comforted by the one who stole her heart.
Together they held eachother through the night and together they woke up to a new day.
And a new king.
Long live king Arthur.
