Chapter 12 Henry
They continued driving around further.
Reid soon recognized the neighborhood that they were in.
It was the same that Madelyn's aunt, Sophia.
Hotch probably had a pair of agents stay in the area in case Madelyn came back. They would be watching Sophia's apartment though. At least there were agents nearby and knew him.
Madelyn parked the car in the garage to the building that was across from her aunt's apartment.
Reid realized that Madelyn had been watching them from one of the apartments. Even though there was no connection to the building they could find, there was one.
"You didn't realize I was so close did you," Madelyn said as they walked up the flight of stairs.
"No, I didn't," Reid answered forcing himself to smile at her.
Madelyn must have double backed and had avoided detection.
She was a thrill seeker.
They walked up the steps to one of the smaller bedroom apartments.
Reid pictured the area in his head. From this apartment, Madelyn could have seen him earlier standing outside of the apartment building.
Madelyn knocked on the door.
The door was opened by a teenage girl.
"You're back early," the girl said.
"Yes, and I forgot the key," Madelyn said.
"She's still asleep," the girl said.
"I'll still pay you for the full time, I know it was short notice," Madelyn said. "This is my husband, Spencer."
"Hi," Reid said the girl.
"Hi, Mr. Reid." The girl said politely.
The girl was clearly only hired as a babysitter.
She was still in danger if something set Madelyn off.
Reid kept calm and gave the girl no indications of trouble.
Madelyn went to the bookshelf by the window and opened a small box. Inside were several bills.
"I know that this was short notice, I appreciate the help," Madelyn said counting out the money.
"That's okay," the girl said taking the cash and leaving.
Reid still did not make any moves. He did not know what Madelyn had planned further and he was on her turf right now.
Madelyn took Reid's hand and lead him into the small bedroom of the apartment.
"I am currently renting this temporarily," Madelyn said. "I couldn't spend all our time with Aunt Sophia."
Reid looked at the apartment. It appeared to be a rental, there was nothing personalized.
They stepped into the bedroom and looked at the bed.
"Henry," Reid carefully went over to the bed and looked him over. He was sleeping, taking a nap. He was in what looked like girl pajamas.
Reid looked on the dresser and saw children's cold medicine.
It was nothing that would have hurt him, only made him tired.
"Uncle Spencer," Henry woke up when Reid started to examine him. He leaned up and give him a hug.
"I told you, you had my word," Madelyn said. "I know you would be good with kids."
Reid looked over and saw a glimpse of the gun that was in Madelyn's hand. She had hidden it where she could get to it in the bedroom.
Henry kept his grip on his Godfather.
Madelyn did not do anything threateningly with the gun.
Reid had two choices, guarding Henry, or going after Madelyn. Any move he made at Madelyn would put Henry in danger. He would protect Henry.
Reid carefully removed Henry's arms. "Stay on the bed," he whispered.
Reid moved towards Madelyn in a way to block Henry from her.
Madelyn smiled at Reid.
"You know I was in FBI custody and I managed to escape," she said.
Madelyn lifted her gun slightly.
Reid made a gesture of surrender. He watched Madelyn for any signs of aggression.
"Come with me, you can tell them where he is," Madelyn said.
Reid took one last look at Henry. He was making sure that he did not show any signs of fear to Henry.
Henry was staying on the bed like he was told.
Madelyn led Reid into the living room. There was a landline phone on the table.
"Call whoever you want," Madelyn said turning the phone towards Reid.
Reid slowly moved towards Madelyn, he had to take an opportunity.
"Wait," he said. "Let's just wait a moment. It's quite right now."
Madelyn moved towards Reid as though she were sizing him up.
Reid extended his hand towards Madelyn. "This is the first quiet moment that we have had."
"We have been busy," Madelyn said.
"It's been busy," Reid said. "You planned all of this."
Madelyn placed her hand in Reid's.
"I haven't been able to take you all in," Reid said very calmly. "Everything that you did. How beautiful you are."
Reid moved his other hand up to touch Madelyn's face. "How did I get someone so beautiful?"
"You are so wonderful," Madelyn said leaning into Reid's hand. "You saved my life and then gave me something worth living for."
"You are so smart," Reid said to her. "Do you know how hard it is for someone to study science without having a prior interest? You studied and learned it. You escaped FBI custody, there are only a few that can do it. We can start our lives together."
Madelyn blushed at that.
"I kiss your vision as it rises before my mind." Reid quoted as he leaned in.
Madelyn turned her head slightly invitingly to Reid.
Reid resisted the urge to vomit as he leaned in to kiss her.
Madelyn received the kiss.
They broke off after a moment.
"In case you ever foolishly forget; I'm never not thinking of you." Madelyn said.
"Virginia Woolf," Reid said leaning in to kiss her again.
Reid placed his hands on her arms, just under her shoulders.
Madelyn was distracted by the kiss.
Reid listened and he the heard the sound of the gun being dropped on the table.
That was when he took his opportunity.
Reid immediately tackled Madelyn and started wrestling with her on the floor.
Madelyn was taken by surprise. Her arms flayed around trying to break from Reid's grip.
Reid was using every takedown procedure.
Madelyn had taken classes in self-defense. She was kicking and punching him wherever she could.
Reid resisted the pain from the strikes. He worked until he got both of Madelyn's legs in his grip. From there he flipped her around and went for her arms.
"Why are you doing this?" Madelyn screamed.
Reid didn't answer. He continued to maintain his grip on Madelyn.
That was when she managed to wiggle away.
Reid turned around to the table and grabbed the gun.
Madelyn turned at the same time.
When she saw Reid had grabbed the gun she went for the phone and swung it at Reid.
The phone contacted Reid's head.
Madelyn dropped it on the floor and looked at Reid.
Reid turned and pointed the gun at Madelyn.
Madelyn stared down at Reid. "How could you?" She then ran out of the door.
Reid's vision was blurry, and his head hurt, he would not risk the shot. He was unable to chase after her
After she was out the door, Reid carefully picked himself up to a sitting position. He reached over for the phone and dialed Hotch's number.
Hotch answered the phone, "Hotchner."
"Hotch, its Reid." Reid said.
"Reid, where are you?" Hotch quickly said.
"I have Henry," Reid quickly said. "He's fine. Madelyn's gone."
Reid felt woozy. He dropped the phone for a moment and waited for the moment to pass.
"Reid, where are you" Hotch said.
Reid didn't answer.
Hotch told Rossi to call Garcia and trace the phone and send a bus to the location.
"Reid answer me, where are you?" Hotch demanded.
Reid forced himself to focus. "She was watching us from one of the apartments, 4A."
"Reid are you hurt?" Hotch asked.
"I'll be okay," Reid answered.
"There is a bus on the way," Hotchner said. "We got agents and LEOs looking for Madelyn. Agent Michaels is on his way to you."
"Henry's fine. She only gave him cold medicine. He will need to sleep it off." Reid said.
"Where are you hurt?" Hotch demanded.
"Concussion." Reid answered.
"I need to keep talking until the Michaels gets there." Hotch said. "Tell me everything since you left the park."
"She had a car waiting," Reid started. "We changed cars, she drove us to the building."
"Describe the car," Hotch said.
"SUV, black," Reid said.
"What is the make and model."
"Chevy," Reid answered.
Reid looked up and saw a man standing in the doorway.
"I'm Michaels," the man said entering the apartment. "Is that Agent Hotchner?"
Reid nodded. "Henry's in the bedroom."
Michaels picked up the phone. "Agent Hotchner, It's Michaels. I'll keep an eye on Agent Reid. I will check on Henry."
Michaels hung up the phone and looked over Reid. "The bus will be here in a moment."
Reid nodded.
Michael went to the kitchen and grabbed one of the towels. He placed it over Reid's headwound. "Here, I'm going to check on Henry."
