Elphaba was again slammed back on the wall. This was her third day of torture. Before questioning in the morning she was given a little food and a drink, but it was not much. For the rest of the day she got nothing.
When the mouth mask is off she tries a healing spell and a spell so she doesn't feel the pain for an hour. Elphaba could pretend to be in pain. But after an hour the pain started.
This time they had used a hallucination spell during the interrogation. It wasn't a good one because Elphaba could see that Glinda was bigger than her. The real Glinda is smaller than her. The eyes of the fake Glinda did not have the same sparkle, but it still hurt Elphaba to see her lover but not to touch her.
Thanks to Nessa, she still had sense of time. Nessa tried to take care of her wounds, but there was little she could do.
Elphaba was almost at breaking point. She had run out of powers to fight the guards or cast a powerfull spells. Elphaba is tired, hungry and thirsty. But she still refused to say where the Grimmerie was.
Then a guard came in with two different bowls. The guard took off her face mask. "This is chicken soup with medication in it. It won't be much, but you have to get your strength back. In the other bowl is fruit, you will get it soon "
Elphaba almost fell asleep she was so tired. 'Hey you have to stay awake. Hold on a little longer' He said kindly while pulling some hair from her face.
'What is this?' Elphaba asked soft after a bite. 'Is this a way to make me talk or another hallucination? She wanted to eat, but she couldn't trust anyone.
The guard smile. 'I'm Niguel, maybe Glinda or Fiyero talked about me. I am their friend,' he explained while he continued to feed Elphaba.
'I hear you're giving Morrible a hard time. Most guards like that.' He laughed softly. Elphaba felt a little better with every bite. She nodded gratefully to Niguel.
'Niguel you said? Glinda once said that name' Elphaba said softly.
'Well then you know that I can be trusted. I'm the captain now while Fiyero is out looking for you. I think something went wrong.' Niguel explained.
Elphaba nodded
Elphabas eyes widened 'Nessa no.' she whispered loudly.
Surprised, Niguel turned around. He got the shock of his life when he saw a woman standing there with a stone. 'Oz what?' he yelps as he jumps back. 'Who are you ? How do you get here?' He asked.
' I can ask you that too,' She hissed back.
'Nessa this is Niguel the capitein of the Gale Force now Fiyero is gone. Niguel this is Nessa my little sister.'
'I didn`t know that the witch had a sister.' said Niguel surprised.
Nessa glared at him. 'She has a name. Or did you think my parents called her Witch?'
'Well father … never mind.' said Elphaba quickly when Nessa gave her a look.
'I know her name.' said Niguel 'Her name is Elphaba at least that's what Fiyero always says. But how did you get here,? he asked Nessa.
'Well Morrible locked me up here a few weeks ago, because I didn't want to cooperate with her plan against Elphaba.' Nessa told her story to Niguel. Who occasionally nodded but still fed Elphaba. He now took the tray with fruit.
'That's a story. Great that you can last so long in here and help the Animals.' Nessa blushed.
Elphaba didn't like it that he was flirting with her sister.
'If you untie me I can eat myself' she said angrily to Niguel. She didn't like that she was being fed all the time.
'I know that' he said. 'But what excuse should I use if a guard comes right away and we haven't reattached you in time?' Elphaba wanted to open her mouth but closed it again.
'Good point' she said against her will. She opened her mouth so Niguel could give her some fruit with the fork.
Niguel laughed. 'Is there anything news from the outside world?' asked Elphaba to change the subject.
'Two or three days ago, two troops with soldiers returned with a bubble. They said Glinda the Good was against them. Morrible was not happy to learn that they could not confirm that Glinda was dead. When they reached the village, they could not grab anyone because they were stopped by magical bubbles. Although a soldier was boasting that he had shot a magical Giraffe.'
Elphaba turned light green from the news. She immediately thought of Raisha. She was happy to hear that Glinda was still alive, but she knew it herself because she could feel Glinda. But that Raisha might be dead touched her deeply.
'Did you know the Giraffe?' asked Nessa when she saw her sister go light green. Elphaba nodded slowly.
'She admitted me to her village when I had nowhere to go. she helped me read the Grimmerie and become more calm with different people.' Niguel and Nessa both nod understandably.
'Can you do something to free us?' Nessa asked when she noticed that Elphaba had to process the news.
Niguel shake his head. 'I don't know how. Elphaba can barely walk on her own two feet and you cannot lift her. It is immediately noticeable.'
Elphaba wanted to tell that she can walk after she had rested for a while but Nessa was ahead of her.
'You're right. Fabala is too weak.' Elphaba give her a look. 'You know that. You can be as stubborn as you want but you know we're right.' She said sternly to Elphaba. Sulkingly, Elphaba admitted they were right.
'I also know Morrible is expecting some Boq from Munchkinland today or tomorrow.' Niguel added.
'Boq?!' asked Nessa in surprise. 'What is he doing here. Who watches Munchkinland?'
'Take it easy Nessa.' said Elphaba. 'I know you still want to lead Munchkinland but you gotta get out of here first.'
surprised Niguel looked at the girls. He gives Elphaba her last bite of fruit. Elphaba still felt very tired. But already felt a little stronger.
'I am Nessarose Throp from the Thropp family,' Nessa explained. 'Elphaba is actually the next in line te be come the governor of Munchkinland.'
'But I pass it on to Nessa,' Elphaba said quickly. She has never been interested in running the country.
'But I thought that the governor daughter couldn't walk.'
Nessa lifted her dress slightly so that the shoes were more visible. 'These are enchanted by Elphaba. I can walk through her,' she explains. 'I owe her a lot.'
Elphaba's cheeks turned dark green. 'Now you are the one helping Nessa.'
Niguel nodded. They heard the door of the dungeons open Nessa quickly went to her own cell and closed the door softly.
Niguel put Elphabas face mask back on. 'Sorry' he said softly. 'I wish I could do more.' Elphaba looked at him gratefully.
'Captain what are you doing here?' a voice asked. Niguel turned and saw Morrible standing there.
'I wanted to ask the witch herself what she did to Glinda?' He slapped her gently in the stomach with a fist to make it look like he was actually doing it.
'But why do you have two bowls with you? asked Morrible who thought it was suspicious.
Niguel laughed viciously. 'The witch has barely eaten anything for at least three days. I have eaten it firsthand. You should have seen her. If her look could kill! I would have been dead long ago.' Elphaba gave Morrible a death look. she understood Niguel's plan and played the game. Although she didn't have to pretend she hated Morrible.
Morrible started to believe what Niguel was saying. 'Good idea captain. Too bad it didn't work.'
Niguel hit Elphaba in the stomach again. 'What can I do for you, Madame?' he asked to Morrible.
'I wanted to see if the witch was reached to talk.' Elphaba shake her head.
'Maybe an old friend can get you to talk.' Morrible said with a mean smile. 'Captain, you can continue your interrogation another time now it's someone else's turn.'
Elphaba swallowed, looking straight at Morrible.
The captain went upstairs. When he was upstairs he saw a man from Tin standing there. He gasped. A tin man? How was that possible? He thought. But he said nothing. He walked to his office to come up with a plan. He knew a little more about Elphaba and her sister. But he couldn't do anything with the information. The Wizard was guarded all the time by Morrible's men and he had no idea how to reach Fiyero.
Meanwhile, Boq walked to the dungeons. He had seen the captain look at him. Despite not having a heart, he still felt a twinge.
He saw all kinds of trapped Animals when he looked for Morrible. He turned the corner and there he saw Elphaba against the wall. You could tell she had been hit hard during the interrogation. But she still held her head up.
'Aah there you are master Boq. We were just talking about you.' As she rubs Elphaba against her cheek. Angrily, Elphaba shook her head. Morrible laughed.
'I'll leave you alone for a moment. Maybe you will get something.' She walked over to Boq. 'Remember if you know where the Grimmerie is, I can conjure you back. I can give you all of Munchkinland and anything you want.' She whispers in his ear. Morrible walks away.
Boq waited until he heard the door shut. He wanted nothing more than his body back. He looked straight at Elphaba.
'You're not that tough anymore, are you?' he while he walked up to her. He wanted to be angery at her. But during his reign he also saw Elphaba change. Boq felt what it is like to be different and everyone is afraid of you while you are not doing anything wrong. He didn't see a picture of her in the house when he knew it was her childhood house. That got him thinking about her life.
He sighed. 'Listen Elphaba I don't know what I've done to earn this. I may no longer have a heart, but I do remember things from the past. Like the love I got from my parents and sometimes from your sister. I know that torturing someone is not my style. So I ask you nicely. Where is the Grimmerie?'
He loosened the screws. He untied the ropes tied behind her head. He removed her face mask.
Elphaba looked at Boq in surprise but did nothing until she could speak. She looked him straight in the eye. She saw the pain in his eyes.
'I'm sorry. I was learning a counter spell before I got caught, "she said softly. "I tried to save you, but it failed."
Boq looked at Elphaba in confusion. He had expected everything but not this. Elphaba was sorry and was already busy me normal? And she tried to save me? He thought. He kept getting dreams about what happened that day. Although Boq could not yet distinguish whether it is real or a dream
'You should know that I think about you almost every day. I'm almost at a counter spell to make you normal. But I need two powerful witches. Glinda is almost ready for it.' She explained further.
Boq almost jumped in the air of joy. He hugged Elphaba
'Uhm are you okay Boq?'she asked in surprise.
'Yes, everything is going well, but why didn't you tell me you've been busy for weeks?'
Elphaba sadly looked down. 'Did you believe me?'
Boq wanted to say yes but changed his mind. He'd been so angry with Elphaba that he probably wouldn't have believed her. He shook his head.
'That's why. I have to prove myself first before people believe me. Especially after Morrible and the Wizard made me a Wicked Witch.'
Boq wanted to ask a few more questions, like why she is called the wicked Witch, but was interrupted by a pair of guards who untied and took Elphaba out of the dungeons. Elphaba struggled to break free. The guards struggled to take her with them. But after a baton hit her head, she walked along quietly.
'What's the matter?' Boq asked angrily. 'I'm not done with her yet.'
'Yes you are,' it sounded angry behind him.
'Madame?' Boq asked, confused.
'I thought you were going to question her. This was a tea wreath. Did you really think I'd leave you alone with her? I was at the top of the stairs listening to you guys. Don't Believe What She Says She's Wicked. Just remember that.' She said with a sigh.
Morrible took the mask from Boq and walked away. 'We're going to question her again. If this doesn't work, we'll have to deploy another secret weapon. Be prepare because the Munchkins will get angry.' She said when she walked away. Confused, Boq was left behind.
Nessa heard everything from her cell. This was her chance to help her sister. She opened her door. There she saw Boq standing. Her heart leaped.
'Boq?' She says. 'I have not been completely honest with you. I'm going to tell you everything now.'
"Nessa? What are you doing here? I thought you were somewhere in the palace?'
'I am, but I am under the palace.'
Then Boq noticed something. 'Nessa you can walk ?! How? Wait I know this. I've been dreaming about this.' He said confused.
'That's what I have to tell you' said Nessa. 'I tried to protect myself but now I have to protect Elphaba.' She started telling everything that happened that day when Elphaba came along. She told him about Morrible and how she treats Elphaba and her. Boq listened carefully.
'So you are her secret weapon?'
'What do you mean?' asked Nessa surprised. She thought she had done everything about Morrible and the Wizard except her own role.
'You still have a lot of support in Munchkinland. Everyone knows you were young when you became a Goveneur in dire circumstances. Since they saw Elphaba change, they also believe in your second chance. People wonder where you stay. They want you back. When the Munchkins find out you were sitting here against your will. They won`t be happy.'
Nessa nods. 'That makes sense and that must be why she treated me the best she could. Should it come true, she can say it is not true because I have no injuries.' Nessa smile sadly. 'Even when she doesn`t know Elphaba helped me. The munchkins see her change zo they believe I can aswell. I am change Boq.'
Boq nodded. Thinking had given him a headache.
'Boq I'm sorry for everything; Nessa said.
Boq no longer knew what to do. 'I have to go.' He said while he walked away. 'It's too much for me. I just want to get normal. I'll be back Nessa' he said as he ran away.
Boq had to have some time to process everything. At first Nessa lied to him. Then Morrible came up with a story. What he thought about Elphaba is wrong. Then Nessa tells the truth again. He was walking the halls when he bumped into the captain.
The captain asked him 'are you okay?'
'No.' Boq said truthfully. 'Do you want to talk about it?' asked the captain?
Boq nodded his head. When they got to his office, the captain wanted to offer him something but wasn't sure what.
'Can I give you something?' he asked carefully.
Boq shake his head.
"I am Niguel," said the captain. 'Can you tell me why you belong to Tin?' he asked cautiously.
Boq began to tell his story.
Wow that's a lot. I don't know what to do either. Niguel said truthfully.
They paused. Boq insisted 'I'm going for a walk in the Emerald City. People seem to tolerate me more here than anywhere else. I don't like all those eyes staring at me.'
Niguel nodded. 'You said Elphaba is being questioned right now and they are going to deploy Nessa tomorrow?'
Boq nodded.
'Then Morrible is getting desperate. Because Wednesday, the day after tomorrow, Elphaba will be hanged.'
'We have to free Nessa,' Boq says suddenly. He didn't want to clean up Morrible's mistakes in Munchkinland. He was sick of all the lies. He also didn't like running a country at all. He much preferred to be a farmer like his parents.
Niguel nodded. 'Elphaba can indeed save herself. But if something happens to Nessa, there will be war with the Munchkins,' Niguel said. 'And I don't want to know what Elphaba will do to whoever touches Nessa with a finger.' He added as the shivers run down his back.
Boq nodded and they came up with a plan to get Nessa out of the palace.
'Good so I'm going to tell Elphaba to let her interrogation last as long as possible. That keeps Morrible busy for a while. In the meantime, you pick up Nessa. You act like she's a servant because no one believes she can walk.' Niguel explained to Boq for the last time.
Boq nodded impatiently. They had made the plan together. Of course he knew what to do. But he also saw that Niguel was very nervous. Everyone went their own way.
Niguel went to the room where Elphaba was. He knocked on the door.
'Come in' He heard.
He walked in and saw Elphaba hanging. Her hands were tied to the ceiling with an iron chain above her head with her eyes closed.
'What can I do for you?' asked Morrible impatiently. She still had no idea where the Grimmerie was and Elphaba didn't let go. Not even after the umpteenth attempt.
'We're going to stop in a minute.' She says to the captain when she saw that he was looking at Elphaba.
'No.' he said quickly.' I want to try something. Is she awake?'
Morrible looked confused. "No, she's unconscious, but we can wake her up.'
Niguel nodded. 'Well done. I need your help can you get me a bucket of water?' he asked Morrible.
'I will not be told what to do,' she said bossily. 'And the rumor that she is allergic to water may not be true.'
The captain nodded. 'I thought so. But I'll be right back with water, believe me, this will work.'
He walked out the door looking for a bucket.
Amazed, Morrible was left behind.
After fifteen minutes, Niguel was back with a bucket.
'Why did it take so long?' Morrible asked impatiently.
Because I have to stretch time thought Niguel. 'Since I couldn't find a bucket,'he said quickly.
Niguel poured some water over Elphaba. Elphaba woke up with a start and turned wild around her. She once surprised when she saw Niguel but said nothing.
Niguel walked up to her and pulled her hair. Elphaba growled. 'Play the game. We are saving Nessa' he whispered softly in Elphaba's ear.
Elphaba said nothing but wanted to know what was going on.
'Good to have you awake witch. Do you see the bucket of water there?' he asked, pointing to the bucket. Elphaba nodded in surprise. 'This is your last chance to tell us what we want to know or you empty the whole bucket in a way that no one likes'
'No' shout Elphaba. She hoped that she play the game correctly. Niguel nodded approvingly.
Niguel took a towel and put it over her head. Then he took a glass of water and shook it empty where Elphabas mouth was about. He kept filling the glass and emptying it next to her mouth.
Morrible looked at the captain in surprise. Maybe she was wrong about him after all. Morrible thought he was just like a sissy like Fiyero but this is the second time he's going to hurt Elphaba.
What Morrible didn't know is that he carefully let the water run next to her mouth. Sometimes there was some water in her mouth, but she could easily swallow it. Meanwhile, Elphaba played along by pretending to be in pain.
After ten minutes, Niguel thought it was enough. Boq had had almost half an hour to get Nessa out of here.
'Sorry Madame. But it doesn't work,' he said guilty.
'It doesn't matter,'she said, giving him an encouraging pat on the back. 'We've all tried. Tomorrow it's Nessa's turn 'she said loud enough for Elphaba to hear.
'What?!' she cried as she pulled hard on the chains.
'Hush you' said Niguel as he slapped her face. Of course Elphaba saw it coming so turned her head before his hand could touched her.
Morrible laughed. 'Leave her Captain. She will know tomorrow.'
"I will bring her back,' he suggested.
Morrible nodded. But Morrible wanted to put the mask on Elphaba again herself. 'So you see that sometimes you could have listened better to your father. Don't make yourself a spectacle and try not to talk so much. Anyone who does not want to learn must feel. 'Morrible said with a self-righteous smile as she slaps her cheek.
Niguel brought back Elphaba who could hardly walk from fatigue. When they were finally alone he whispered. 'Nessa is released by Boq. You don't need to know more. I'll make sure Morrible doesn't question you that often tomorrow.'
Elphaba nodded as she fell asleep.
The poor thing. Niguel thought. it's just after dinnertime and she's exhausted.
In the meantime, Boq is running with Nessa through the streets of the City.
It was very easy to get Nessa out of her cell. Although Nessa had her doubts at first. She didn't want to leave her sister. But after Boq explained that Elphaba would likely give up the book if Morrible touched her, she was persuaded. In the palace no one asked about Boq's servant. They thought it was quite normal for servants to walk around.
Nessa and Boq was running around the corner somewhere in the dark city streets when they bumped into three other people.
Nessa looked surprised to see who it was.
