Robins in the Ashes - :D

"Florges, let's go."

"Vikavolt."

Florges crossed her arms and stared the Stag Beetle Pokemon down, using her near royal demeanor to intimidate it. And it worked.

"Energy Ball."

"Counter with Moonblast," I said, snapping my fingers., The green and pink orbs collide in the air, creating a shining explosion.

"Use Petal Blizzard," I shouted. Florges raised her arms, sending white, glowing, heart-shaped petals flying towards Vikavolt who weaved through them.

"Thunderbolt," Max yelled.

"Dodge it, Florges," I shouted.

"Energy Ball."

"Counter with Moonblast!"

"Bug Bite!"

Vikavolt Zipped to the left of the explosion, flying towards Florges, who was caught off guard. Vikavolt's mandibles snapped, crushing Florges's kneck.

"FLO!" Florges cried, her extreme pain becoming worse by the second, and Vikavolt showed no signs of releasing.

My eyes widened as Florges continued to writhe and cry in pain. I looked at Max, his eyes were narrowed, he wasn't enjoying watching Florges in pain, I'm not sure why I thought he would, Max has never been that way, only someone like Lysandre would enjoy seeing a Pokémon in pain.

"Call her back."

I looked across the field, Max's eyes met mine and he spoke again, "Call Florges back."

I blinked back tears that were threatening to fall, "What?"

Max crossed his arms, "Vikavolt won't be letting go, and it will only cause Florges more pain, and damage will become irreversible in a few moments. For your sake and her's, call Florges back now."

I stood there watching Florges, still in pain. The tears were starting to fall as I wiped them away.

"Bonnie!"

"I forfeit Florges," I said, returning Florges to her Pokeball.

"And with Florges being forfeited, Bonnie is down to three Pokemon, while Max still has four left, but don't look away, both of these trainers are as unpredictable as a Future Sight's timing so it's still anyone's match," the announcer called.

"Vikavolt, you're staying in."

Vikavolt, then Milotic, then he'll go down to Gallade or Sceptile, and Milotic can barely take a hit, so let's go.

"Delphox, I choose you!"

Max raised an eyebrow, he didn't see my plan, meaning that he didn't know that I knew that Milotic couldn't take a hit.

"Ok, use Energy Ball," he yelled.

"Send it back with Psychic," I yelled. Delphox's eyes began glowing blue as she held her arms out. A blue aura surrounded the green orb as it flew back, pegging Vikavolt against the arena wall.

"Vikavolt is unable to battle."

"Ok, with Vikavolt out of commission, I'll use Milotic."

"Mi mi," Milotic cried.

"If the rumors are true, we're about to witness an ex-coordinating Pokemon and a current coordinating Pokemon. Milotic versus Delphox, I'm excited to see how this'll play out."

"HE'S THE BEST, HE'S OUR MAX, HE'LL SEND YOU BACK WITH HIS BEST ATTACKS," I heard his Zubat-like fangirls screech. Max grinned and waved at the cheering section, causing the girls to swoon. I clenched my fist, these girls knew nothing about him, and they were all acting like they were-

Oh.

I was jealous.

That realization hit me like a Take Down attack, but, trying to maintain cool under pressure I mustered up the courage to yell at him, "Stop causing your fangirls to swoon Maple, and focus on the battle!"

Max grinned, "Jealous?"

That little-, "Not at all, just want to start the battle."

"Okay," Max said with a wink that made me turn bright red.

"Battle resume."

"Hydro Pump," Max said, snapping his fingers.

'Use Psychic to dodge," I shouted.

Delphox's eyes once again glowed blue as a blue aura surrounded Delphox as she lifted herself above the attack.

"Rapid-fire Shadow Ball!"

"Bat them away with Dragon Tail," Max yelled. I saw his eyes widened as Milotic's glowing tail batted away the black and purple orbs.

"Mil," Milotic shrieked as it fell to the ground.

Max looked dumbstruck as he returned Milotic, "How did you know Milotic couldn't take a hit?"

"Serena told me," I responded.

"Not surprised," he said, shaking his head.

I smiled and glanced at his horrified fangirls, some of them were even crying.

"Sceptile, I choose you."

"Delphox return. Audino, let's go," I said.

The Fox Pokemon was replaced by the joyful, rested Healing Pokemon.

"You look pumped, Audino," I said, laughing.

"Aud, aud," Audino cheered before looking at her opponent, "Audino." I could tell her blood ran cold at the sight of Sceptile.

I almost couldn't hold back my laughter, "It's okay, Audino. You can battle for as long as you want. Just so Delphox won't have to take on a Sceptile when she's tired," I reassured.

"Since Audino doesn't seem too keen on battling Sceptile, we'll go easy on you," Max said.

"You're gonna regret that, Max," I said, "Audino, use Toxic!"

"Sceptile, use Frenzy Plant to dodge," Max shouted.

Sceptile slammed its fists into the ground as roots appeared across the battlefield and jumped between them, avoiding the black jets of liquid.

"Leaf Blade!"

"Use Psychic!"

Audino's eyes began to glow, much like Delphox's had. Sceptile was held in place as its eyes widened. Audino turned back to me and I nodded. Sceptile was slammed against the arena wall. Max looked at me and smirked before looking back at Sceptile.

"Sceptile, you know what to do."

Sceptile grabbed something from around its neck and held it in his mouth, jerking his head to send the thing flying towards Audino. It hit Audino square in the forehead which broke her hold on Sceptile, who pushed off the wall and slashed at Audino, sending her flying to the other side of the arena and knocking her out cold. Sceptile had caught the thing and sent it back to Max, who caught it and stuffed it in one of his pockets.

"What was that?" I asked, returning Audino to her Pokeball.

Max crossed his arms, "Sceptilite, it's one of my break-glass-in-case-of-emergency strats against Psychic Types or just Pokemon using Psychic."

"So you had Sceptile throw its Mega Stone to break Audino's concentration so you could attack it, right?"

"Yup."

"Where'd you pick that trick up?"

"Against Olympia, I had Gallade and Sceptile for the double battle and it was a spur of the moment idea," Max explained.

I was stalling by asking, of course, trying to give Delphox as long as I could to rest up, but it was a pretty good strategy, maybe I'd have to find some Audinite.

"Delphox, come on out," I shouted.

Delphox was still tired from her battles against Vikavolt and Milotic but Audino did some damage. If I could get the battle to end in a draw, he'd use Mega Gallade against Squishy.

"Dragon Pulse!"

"Dodge, then use Mystical Fire!"

Sceptile fired a multi-colored dragon-shaped beam at Delphox, who almost danced to the side. With the end of her ignited branch, she created a circle of fire and blew a stream of flames through the circle.

"Dodge it, Sceptile!"

Sceptile tried to move out of the way but cried out when Delphox's flames burned its tail.

"Sceptile, I know you're hurt but we still have to beat her, use Dragon Pulse!"

"Counter with Shadow Ball!"

The dragon-shaped beam collided with the Shadow Ball, creating multicolored smoke that resembled a nebula cloud, which masked Sceptile charging through it with glowing blades on its forearms.

"Fire Blast!" I screamed.

Delphox let out a shrill cry as she sent a Fire Blast directly at Sceptile as Sceptile slashed at her with Leaf Blade. The force of both attacks sent the Pokemon flying, both hitting the arena walls.

"It's a double knockout, both Pokemon are unable to battle and both trainers have one Pokemon left."

"Gallade, let's do this, our strategy will be hard to beat."

"Squishy, I choose you."

I heard the fangirls complaining that the matchup wasn't fair because Squishy was a Legendary and that he hadn't had time to prepare.

He noticed the complaining and forced himself not to laugh like I was, except I was failing. If anything, he had the advantage over me and Squishy because of the amount of research he's done to strategize.

"Well, let's even the playing field, in terms of strength of course," Max said.

I nodded, "Not that it'll do much," I taunted, purposely triggering the fangirls, "The scales still tip in my favor."

"Brute force will always lose to a carefully crafted strategy."

"Just Mega Evolve Gallade already," I said, shaking my head.

"Yes dear," he said with a wink, I felt my face turn hot, "Gallade, Mega Evolve!"

"Okay, let's hit the ground running. Squishy, use Extreme Speed."

"Dodge then Psycho Cut."

Squishy charged forward but Gallade flipped into the air and landed behind him, slashing at the air with glowing forearms.

The attack hit Squishy dead-on but he shook his head and shook off the attack. Max and Gallade's eyes widened as Squishy's narrowed and I smirked.

"Dragon Pulse!"

"Dodge then use Ice Punch."

Gallade quickly moved out of the way of the three-headed dragon beam, ramming his ice-covered fist into Squishy's side. He didn't brush off the attack as easily as the Psycho Cut, since Ice Punch was an Ice attack and Squishy was a Dragon-Type.

Max's strategy was to out-maneuver and attack. If he gets too much damage I'll use Thousand Arrows or something, I resolved.

The hit and dodge tactic continued, meaning I was zoning out. I was pulled back into reality once Squishy let out an almost alien scream of pain.

"Thousand Arrows!"

Squishy howled as green energy fell from the sky and brought Gallade to his knees.

Both Pokemon stared at each other before closing their eyes and hitting the ground at the same moment.

The arena went silent as Max and I looked at each other in shock. I heard someone get up and start walking. I assumed it was Ash, they'd need a Champion's opinion since a draw in nearly any competition has never been seen.

"We have an announcement about the winner," the announcer said, timidly. I looked over to the booth where he was sitting and saw Ash standing off to the side. I couldn't blame the announcer, in full Champion mode, Ash was a bit scary.

"The match is announced as a draw, and because of that, both Bonnie and Max are declared the winners of this year's Kalos League."

Max and I smiled at each other, and I went for it. I ran across the battlefield and wrapped my arms around him. He returned the embrace and we were both a blushing mess when we pulled away.

"So, am I crazy, or were you jealous?"

"What do you think?" I said, smiling.

"Just so you two know, Serena's been shipping it since you guys met," Ash said, walking over with two league officials carrying matching trophies.

"We're not dating," Max and I shouted.

"You will be."

"How did you become a matchmaker."

Ash raised his eyebrow, "I'm watching my wife fangirl over you two hugging, I think it's safe to say that I may be dense, but I can tell you two will be a couple, give it a year or something."

After doing the standard winner's mini-interview and being forced into a few pictures, Max and I walked off the battlefield, together.

He turned to me once we couldn't hear the crowd, "Do you wanna skip the whole press conference thing and just grab some pizza?"

"Of course," I said, jumping up.

We took one of the back entrances, avoiding the reporters, and walked out into the city.

Maybe we didn't start dating immediately, but we were both fine with starting this whole thing slowly, as friends.
