Heads up. There's a major turning point at the end of this one.
Disclaimer: I own nothing that has to do with Uncharted or Gravity Falls.
Chapter 15: The Thieves of Libertalia
(The twins had arrived at some kind of town square with the treasury building on the other side. Scattered across the ground are the remains of dozens of dead bodies. They are both stunned by the sight.)
Mabel: Well, I see our missing colonists. Some of them anyway.
(Dipper observes the area and sees weapons and stacks of random objects around the bodies.)
Dipper: Cannons... improvised barricades... What the hell happened here?
Mabel: Some kind of battle.
Dipper: It's a rhetorical question. The real question is who's fighting who? And why?
(Mabel looks closely at the corpses and notices the clothes on them.)
Mabel: Some of these bodies are dressed a bit more fancy. Look like soldiers.
Dipper: So it was the colonists verses the soldiers. Seems like they broke out into civil war.
Mabel: And if that's the treasury up there...
Dipper: It appears someone was trying to make a withdrawal.
Mabel: (nervous) Yeah. Let's just hope they didn't succeed.
(They hurry over to the treasury building and enter it. They observe the high ceiling and decorated walls. They are intrigued by it.)
Dipper: Man... this is impressive.
Mabel: To say the least.
(They approach a large set of doors with a switch next to them.)
Dipper: And here... we... go.
(He pulls the switch and a sound is heard but the doors don't open.)
Mabel: Or not. You wanna give me a hand?
Dipper: Yeah.
(They two push the doors open and step through. Inside is a massive interior with big shelves and storage containers that are all empty. A large part of the wall and ceiling is gone.)
Mabel: (disappointed) It's empty.
Dipper: 'Course it is.
Mabel: (sighs) You think Tyrone?
(Dipper observes how dusty the shelves are.)
Dipper: No. Nothing's been touched in here for hundreds of years.
Mabel: Right... Well... search for clues?
Dipper: Yeah. Search for clues.
(They start inspecting the place. Dipper finds a body by the wall wearing a uniform.)
Dipper: Fancy clothes. Some kind of uniform. You were a guard here weren't you? Nice job.
Mabel: What the hell happened here?
Dipper: Good question.
Mabel: (concerned) What if... maybe there's no treasure left? That they spent it all on marbled floors so the colonists found out their treasure's gone and they get pissed.
Dipper: Maybe so.
(They open drawers and containers and find most of them empty. Dipper finds a paper in one of them. It's a list of all sorts of treasure and how much it's worth.)
Dipper: What's this? Old manifest. Lots of treasure. Is this what was on the shelves?
(He then finds a wrecked statue of Avery lying on the floor at the back of the room.)
Dipper: Captain Avery... You've certainly seen better days.
(He looks around some more until he hears Mabel call him.)
Mabel: Wait a sec. Dipper! Over here.
(He goes over to her. She picks up something off the floor next to a shelf.)
Dipper: What'd you got?
Mabel: Libertalia money.
(She hands him a gold coin with a skull and crossbones imprinted on it.)
Dipper: This has Avery's sigil on it... He must've melted down the gold and minted his own currency.
Mabel: (hopeful) So based on that, all the manifests on the shelves... the treasure was here. That leaves the bigger question. Where is it now? Okay... so we know that there was fighting outside.
Dipper: Yeah and inside.
Mabel: You think the colonists stole it?
(Dipper looks up as he thinks and notices something. He then realizes what really happened.)
Dipper: No... I think they were trying to reclaim what was theirs. Look.
(He points to twelve large portraits of pirate captains hanging on the wall. Each has the word "thief" written in big white letters over them.)
Dipper: Henry Avery, Thomas Tew... Founders of Libertalia. All marked with the word "thief". Not "murderer", not "tyrant"...
Mabel: "Thief". So by the time the colonists busted in here... the treasure was already gone.
Dipper: Yeah, because these guys had already taken it for themselves. Pirates will be pirates, right?
Mabel: (smirks) Yeah, pirates will be pirates.
(This time, Mabel looks up and realizes something.)
Mabel: Huh. I know where they moved it.
Dipper: What? Where?
(She points up to the ceiling and Dipper sees a huge painting of a landscape with buildings on it.)
Dipper: It's a map. A map of Libertalia.
(Mabel points to a set of buildings on one end of the map.)
Mabel: Yeah, right there... that's our treasury... So follow it to the other side of the island and look... right there.
(They see another set of buildings on the other end. They're twelve big houses with pirate sigils next to them. Dipper reads the name of the place.)
Dipper: "New Devon". Wait. Avery was from Devon, England.
Mabel: He sure was. Man, those are some seriously large mansions.
Dipper: Each of them has its own sigil too.
Mabel: Because that's where they lived. (laughs) Avery named his new home after his old hometown. The treasure has to be there.
Dipper: (laughs) Whaddaya say we, uh, climb that watch tower, huh? Get our bearings?
Mabel: (confidently) New Devon here we come.
(They see the tall tower looming over the treasury through big opening in the ceiling.)
Dipper: Now... how do we get up there?
(Mabel finds a crank with a chain behind a shelf.)
Mabel: I got an idea. Gimme a hand.
(They push the shelf aside. Mabel starts turning the crank.)
Mabel: Okay, that's step one. Step two...
(The chain pulls a large chandelier off the ground.)
Dipper: (impressed) Raise the chandelier. Good idea.
Mabel: You sound surprised.
Dipper: Just take the compliment.
Mabel: (chuckles) Thank you. Alright. Now the place is looking classy.
Dipper: Let's get up there.
(Dipper climbs on a shelf and throws his hook to the chandelier. He swings on the rope across the room and grabs hold of a painting on the wall.)
Mabel: Oh, nice one, Tarzan.
(Dipper climbs across the paintings of the founders.)
Dipper: Sorry, Condent.
Mabel: Baldridge.
Dipper: What?
Mabel: You're stepping on Baldridge.
Dipper: Oh. So I am.
(He gets through the hole in the wall and onto a ledge on the tower. Mabel does the same thing he did and joins him. They enter the tower through a window.)
Dipper: Alright, up we go.
(They begin to ascend the tower by the staircase.)
Mabel: I'm really shocked the stairs are intact.
Dipper: (annoyed) Hey, hey, hey. Don't jinx us.
(They reach a floor where the stairs are missing and there's a hole in the wall.)
Mabel: Whoops. Spoke too soon.
Dipper: Like I said.
(They get out onto a ledge and use their ropes to ascend the tower on the outside wall. The tower is really well made and even has statues on some of the ledges.)
Mabel: (impressed) Dipper, you seeing this tower?
Dipper: Sure am.
(Dipper reaches a window on a higher floor.)
Dipper: Hey, Mabel?
Mabel: Yeah?
Dipper: Alright. Just making sure you haven't plummeted to your death.
Mabel: (chuckles) Just about there!
Dipper: (mutters) She sure is excited.
(They go through the window and find an opening in the floor above. Dipper crouches down.)
Dipper: Need a lift?
Mabel: I'd love one.
(He gives her a boost up. She reaches down and helps him up. Then they climb up a ladder leading to the top of the tower. There, they have a magnificent view of most of the island. They see the the mountain looming over everything, various cliff walls and the city below them.)
Dipper: (amazed) Whoa. Quite the crow's nest, huh?
(Mabel points to a set of large buildings in the distance. They're on an elevated part of the ground behind a river running through the island with some waterfalls on the cliffs.)
Mabel: There it is. Just on the other side of the river.
Dipper: (smirks) Well, whaddya say we go rob from the rich, huh?
(Mabel starts scaling the side of the tower to get back down. Dipper follows her.)
Dipper: Hey, is there a path down here?
Mabel: Ah, of sorts. C'mon. So, how long you figure it'll take us to get to New Devon?
Dipper: Well, a couple hours, maybe. Depends on what or who we bump into along the way.
(As they drop down to a lower ledge, they hear something zooming through the air towards them. Before they know it, the side tower of the tower is hit by a rocket.)
Mabel: (alarmed) Ah, shit! Dipper! RPG!
Dipper: (alarmed) Shit! You all right?
Mabel: Yeah! Come on! Through these windows!
(He drops down to where she is and enters the tower again through an open window. More rockets hit the tower which causes some debris to fall as it shakes violently.)
Dipper: Mabel, lookout! Move!
Mabel: Geez!
Dipper: These guys love blowing shit up, don't they?!
Mabel: Dipper! Down here!
Dipper: I'm coming!
(He follows her down the stairs. They run as fast down the tower as starts to fall apart.)
Mabel: Something tells me they've had enough of us.
Dipper: Really? What gives you that idea?
Mabel: Down here, quick!
Dipper: Don't wait, just go!
(The side of the tower Dipper is on is hit by a rocket and the walkway breaks. He tumbles down to the lower floor. Mabel jumps down and helps him up.)
Mabel: Dipper! Get up, we gotta go!
(Suddenly, the wall blows open and the tower tilts over. The siblings slide across the floor to the open wall.)
Mabel: Oh... God!
Dipper: Shit, shit, shit!
(They quickly throw their ropes to the wall above them before they fall out. The tower is now on its side hanging over a gorge. Shoreline mercenaries appear in a large ruined building on the other side and open fire in their direction.)
Dipper: (agitated) Assholes...
Mabel: Come on! Up here! Climb up the rope!
(They get back up into the tower. It starts to crumble as it keeps getting fired upon.)
Dipper: Ah, great.
Mabel: Oh, what the hell?!
Dipper: Run!
(They run across the tower and parts of it fall off.)
Mabel: (frantically) Don't stop. Don't stop. Don't slow down!
Dipper: Jump!
(They reach the end and jump to a ledge on the building on the other side just as the tower completely collapses into the gorge. They stop for a second to catch their breath until a wall blows open on another walkway. Several enemies come out and shoot at them. The twins start running again as they shoot back.)
Dipper: Ah, this is nuts!
Mabel: Keep running! Don't stop!
(They go through some doors and enter another part of the building away from their attackers. They find another door.)
Dipper: Okay...
(He opens the door and grenade immediately appears in front of them.)
Mabel: Grenade!
(They jump back as it goes off. Dipper is knocked off the walkway and grabs onto the edge of it. Then it breaks and he falls.)
Dipper: Oh no! Aaahhh!
Mabel: Dipper!
(He lands on a mudslide a few yards below him and slides down. He reaches a ledge and jumps to another part of the building.)
Dipper: (uneasy) Oh, I'm gonna feel this in the morning.
(He hears Mabel fighting a merc above him.)
Mabel: Asshole!
Dipper: Kick his ass, Mabel!
(He climbs the wall up to an open window.)
Dipper: Alright... let's try this again.
(As soon as he steps through, he's ambushed from the side and thrown to the ground. He looks up and sees Tambry standing above him in a light-tan safari shirt and dark-green pants. She kicks his gun away and points her own at him.)
Dipper: (smiles nervously) Hey Tambry. Great to see you again.
(She puts her foot on his chest.)
Dipper: (urgently) Ow! Okay, Mango! Mango!
Tambry: (irritated) What are you on about?
Dipper: Well, it's my safe word.
Tambry: (laughs humorously) Are you always this clever?
Dipper: (smirks) I have my moments.
Tambry: Yes. You and your sister have proven yourselves the more capable treasure hunters on the island. Shame we're not on the same side.
Dipper: Wait, there's... there's still time.
Tambry: (sternly) Trust a Drake? Hmm? I'm not falling for that again.
Dipper: (nervously) Hey, hey, just... let's just talk about this.
(Mabel suddenly comes down from a hole in the ceiling and shoves Tambry off him. She kicks Mabel down as Dipper tries to get her gun. Tambry quickly pushes herself into him and they break through the door in the room. They roll down a slope and land through the roof of another room in the ruined building. Tambry reaches for her gun but it falls through a small hole in the floor. Dipper slowly gets back up.)
Dipper: (sheepishly) Okay, that was a... bit rougher than expected. I'll just ah... see myself out.
(Tambry stands up and glares at him.)
Tambry: (frustrated) After everything... you think I'm just going to let you walk away?
(Mabel drops down in the room next to Dipper and glares back at her.)
Mabel: (firmly) That'd be the wise thing to do.
(Tambry makes a fighting stance.)
Dipper: Oh, come on Tambry, really? We know you're a badass and all, but... there's two of us.
Tambry: You don't think my men are on their way here right now? All I have to do is buy some time. That's if I don't finish you myself.
Dipper: (sighs) God damn it.
(The twins make fighting stances.)
Mabel: Go!
(They both come at her. She swiftly avoids their attacks and tries to strike. They block her attack and get some hits on her. She then dodges them until she manages to throw Mabel into some barrels in the corner. Then she pushes Dipper into a table and tries to punch him.)
Tambry: I'm tired of this island! And I'm tired of the two of you!
Mabel: Ah, no you don't!
(Mabel grabs her from behind.)
Tambry: Get off!
(She shoves Mabel off her as Dipper tries to throw a punch. Tambry blocks it and pushes him down.)
Dipper: Agh, how does she do that?
Mabel: C'mon!
(He gets up and rams Tambry into a wall as she fights with Mabel.)
Dipper: Can we just talk about this?
Tambry: I don't think so.
(She pushes him off of her and knocks him into Mabel. The she hits him hard that he stumbles out the window next to them. He grabs a wooden beam sticking out and hears them fighting inside.)
Mabel: Now hold on!
Tambry: No!
Dipper: Hang in there Mabel.
(He scales the outside wall to the roof.)
Tambry: Do you know how many men I've lost? Of course not. It's all just a game to you.
(Dipper gets on the roof and jumps through the hole.)
Dipper: (aggressively) Tambry!
(He slams on top of her and they break through the floor. They fall onto the side of a cliff the building is sitting on. Dipper sees Tambry's gun on the ground and tries to get it, but she gets up and kicks him. As she's focused on him, Mabel jumps down and manages to get the gun. She points it at Tambry who stands back.)
Mabel: (tauntingly) You're fast... but you're not that fast.
Dipper: Hey forget about her. We gotta get out of here before they-
(Shoreline men appear from the building's opening in front of them. Mabel quickly puts her arm around Tambry's neck and puts the gun to her head as the men aim theirs at her.)
Dipper: Shit.
Mabel: Back off!
Dipper: (cautious) Whoa, whoa, whoa. Everybody just... calm down, okay?
(From behind the men, Tyrone appears holding a gun of his own at them. He wears a gray shirt and dark pants. Dipper and Mabel are anxious at seeing him as it's been a very long time since the three of them were together. Mabel keeps holding Tambry hostage. Tyrone smiles at the situation.)
Tyrone: (amused) Well, this is interesting. Dipper. Mabel.
Mabel: (threatening) Put your guns down! All of you.
Tyrone: No.
Tambry: (aggravated) Tyrone, this girl's on edge.
Tyrone: Oh, don't worry about him, Tambry. These guys don't kill anyone in cold blood. It's just not their style.
Mabel: You willing to bet her life on that?
Tyrone: Go ahead then. Shoot her.
Dipper: (anxious) Mabel!
Tambry: I die, you both die.
Mabel: (desperate) So be it. Not another step!
Tyrone: (smirks) You mean... like this?
(He mockingly takes a step closer to them.)
Dipper: Mabel... put the gun down.
Mabel: I warned you.
Tyrone: Do it.
Tambry: Tyrone!
(Dipper quickly snatches the gun from Mabel and holds it up as it goes off.)
Tyrone: (to his men) Hold your fire!
Dipper: (calmly) It's done. Okay? It's done.
(He sets the gun down as Tambry breaks out of Mabel's hold. She picks up the gun and walks over to her men while glaring at Tyrone.)
Tambry: (sarcastically) "Don't worry Tambry. It's not their style."
Tyrone: What can I say? I didn't think she had it in her. Now if you can just give me a minute, I need to have a word with these two.
Tambry: Don't take too long. We can't afford to waste time.
(Tyrone puts his gun down and walks over to the twins. Mabel becomes more worried as he looks at her.)
Tyrone: (smiles) Mabel, good to see ya. I guess you knew this moment was coming, huh?
(His smile drops as he punches her hard and she falls down.)
Dipper: (annoyed) Hey! C'mon, man. You already got us. Take it easy.
Tyrone: Oh, I'd like to. If only you hadn't made this so difficult for me.
(Dipper helps Mabel up and faces Tyrone with a calm yet firm attitude.)
Dipper: Look, this doesn't have to go on any further. C'mon now, you're a businessman. Let's just... work it out a deal.
Tyrone: (smirks) Oh, a deal. Oh yeah, I'd love to hear what you have in mind. Go ahead. I'm listening.
Dipper: Alright... you wanna find Avery's treasure? We'll help you find it.
Tyrone: And in exchange, I let you live?
Dipper: Yeah. That... and a small cut...
(Tyrone laughs and looks back at Tambry and her men.)
Tyrone: (amused) The gauchos on this guy.
Dipper: (assuringly) Just enough to get Mabel her freedom, okay? That's all we're doing this for.
(Tyrone turns back to him with confusion.)
Tyrone: Her freedom?
Mabel: (guiltily) Dipper-
Dipper: Yeah. She did hard time. Our time. And the guy who broke her out, Hector Alcazar... she owes him a lot of money or else he'll kill her.
Tyrone: (bewildered) Whoa. What the hell are you talking about, Dipper? Hector Alcazar died in a shootout in Argentina like six months ago. I'm the one that got Mabel out.
(Those words shocked and confused Dipper profoundly.)
Dipper: What...?
(Tyrone is still confused until he realizes what's really going on.)
Tyrone: Ohhhhh. (chuckles) Wow. What did she tell you? Mabel, what kind of story did you cook up? Alcazar? Really? You lied? You lied to your own brother?
(Seeing that Dipper is too perplexed to speak while Mabel is too guilty, Tyrone keeps talking.)
Tyrone: Here's the thing, Dipper. As you know, I never stopped looking for Avery's treasure, but I wasn't getting any closer to finding it. I just kept running into these dead ends. So one day recently, I decided to go back to the prison in Panama where the search all started to see if there was anything else we missed the first time. And while I'm there, I find out that our dear ol' Mabel Drake, an authority on Avery, is alive and somewhat well. There was no breakout. And far as I know, her life wasn't threatened by any crime lord. I bribed the prison warden and your sister just waltzed right out the front gate. She spent some time after that tracking down the second St. Dismas Cross. And you know what? She did it all with me.
Dipper: No...
Tyrone: (grins) Oh, yeah.
Dipper: No, that's bullshit.
Tyrone: Oh, Mabel? Care to refute?
(Dipper turns to his sister hoping that she'll tell him it's not true. She steps towards him.)
Mabel: Dipper...
Dipper: Aw, Mabel... no...
Mabel: (desperate) Listen, Avery's treasure was ours... It was always ours.
(He pushes her away in rage.)
Dipper: (devastated) No! I left my life for you!
(Mabel says nothing more and steps away in shame. Dipper remembers the conversation between Tyrone and Tambry he overheard back in Scotland. He realizes that when they talked about Tyrone wanting to draw "Drake" out, they really meant Mabel and not him. Tyrone laughs at the tension between the siblings now that truth has been revealed.)
Tyrone: (assuringly) Hey look, Dipper, if it's any consolation, she duped me too. She pulled Houdini on me and brought you... and that old man back into the mix. And I cannot lie, Mabel, that really... pissed me off. But you know... it's all behind us now. Especially since we finally found where the treasure is.
(Mabel stops looking guilty and glares at him.)
Mabel: (aggressively) You don't deserve it.
Tyrone: (annoyed) And you do? Last I checked we're all a bunch of thieves... digging around where we shouldn't.
(Before anything else is said, Tambry walks up to him.)
Tambry: (impatient) Tyrone, I think you've made your point. So one way or another end it. Or I will.
(She steps back as Tyrone sighs and holds his gun up at Mabel.)
Tyrone: Well, you heard the lady. Sorry guys, I really wish we could've worked together on this. But you've caused me just too much trouble.
Dipper: (sternly) Hey, you kill us, you miss one clue and you can kiss that treasure goodbye. You said it yourself, you keep running into dead ends. Why don't you face it, Tyrone. You need us.
(Tyrone hesitates for a second before lowering his gun again.)
Tyrone: Yeah, you're right... You're half right.
(He points the gun at Dipper.)
Tyrone: I just need Mabel.
Dipper: (panicking) Wait, you're making a mistake-
Mabel: (frantically) Tyrone, don't!
(Mabel jumps in front of Dipper as Tyrone pulls the trigger. Mabel is shot in her left shoulder and the impact knocks her back into Dipper and pushes him off the cliff.)
Mabel: (horrified) Dipper!
(Dipper falls, leaving his sister alone with their enemies. His head hits a rock sticking out of the cliff wall and knocks him out. His hat comes off and he lands in the river about a hundred feet below the cliff.)
(After a short time, his unconscious body is washed up on the shore of the river. His forehead has a big gash on it. His hat is on the ground next to him. Someone runs up to him on the side of the river. It turns out to be Pacifica. She kneels down next to him.)
Pacifica: (worried) Oh, my God. Dipper. Hey. Dipper!
So, did you see that coming? Mabel lied about being in danger the whole time. And now the twins are separated again. The tables have turned big time. That's why Alcazar wasn't recasted since he was only in one chapter and not even involved with the actual story.
Also, in the game, it was never explained how Tyrone's character, Rafe, discovered that Mabel's character, Sam, was still alive before bailing him out of prison. It's a frustrating plot hole so I used my theory on how he found out. With him going back to the prison to find any more clues and finding Sam still incarcerated there.
