Chapter Eleven: Clash
A still disbelieving Sky stood at the base of the wall. The only ones who didn't seem to have a problem with the wall were flying dragons and birds. He glanced back at the herd as they murmured to themselves before looking back at the wall. The herd continued to talk amongst themselves as Peril and the two Hivewing brothers made their way through. When they made it to the front, Peril looked to her brother before looking down at the boys. Peril firmly said, "You two stay here."
The brothers only nodded as they understood. She then reassured, "I'll be right back."
Peril then walked up to her brother. Sky looked about the wall to see if there was a way. The wall blocked out the sun a little over them as Peril joined him. Looking to her brother, she then reassured, "Don't worry, Sky. We'll find a way around it."
"In the morning.." Sky said as he decided what they would do. What he said next shocked Peril, "We'll climb over it."
Peril looked to him while he kept looking over it. Peril then said, "Sky, we don't know what the other side looks like."
"It leads into the nesting grounds." Sky pointed out. But it didn't matter to her and Peril then said, "But Sky, we can't risk the herd for a reward if we can't get to it."
"And we will." Sky said and turned away from the wall. Peril only sighed before following after him.

Clay finally made it back to the cave where they entered. Quickly passing by the two bodies of his friend and enemy, Clay climbed to the top of the cave in. Clay grunted as he pushed a few of the rocks out of the way. When he was through to the other side, Clay panted from the work but knew that he couldn't stop now. Pulling himself through, Clay hurried down the side of the rocks and quickly bolted out of the cave. But before he stepped out into the day light, Clay looked about to see if there were any predatory dragons nearby. When the coast was clear, Clay turned to his right and kept running.

The sun was starting to set as the group in the valley settled down. While Zini and Suri stayed with Baylene and Toothless, Yar and Plio sat next to Meatlug as they watched the entrance. Plio became beyond worried for Clay and the others the longer they were out there. Yar looked to his daughter and said, "Don't you worry, Plio. Clay's gonna come back with everyone behind him."
"I just can't help but worry about him." Plio said and hugged her knees. Yar placed a comforting hand on her shoulder and glanced to Meatlug. The Gronkle only glanced back before they turned their attention back to the tunnel. Plio just sighed and hoped that Clay would be all right.

The sun had set when Clay rounded one of the many bends of the area. He stopped to take a quick breath and the stench of death hit his nostrils. Looking about, Clay saw something behind some brush and came closer. He used his talons to move the dried plants out of the way and his eyes widened when he saw dead small dragon lying on the ground. Clay figured that it must have died from exhaustion during the journey. But he didn't have time to dwell on it for long when he heard heavy footsteps coming towards him. Clay looked about and his eyes widened again when he saw a familiar shape slinking amongst the rocks. Clay backed away and hid behind a rock as Smaug walked onto the scene.
Smaug looked about as many scents filled his nostrils. He growled as he recognized the scent of the herd, and even more so when he could smell that the Mudwing was close by. But the stench of death made him hungry. He walked over to the rock where Clay was hiding and let loose another growl. Clay carefully glanced around the rock as the wyvern hissed and ducked back down to avoid being seen. The wyvern could tell by the Mudwing's scent that he was close, but the smell of the dead dragon before him was too great to ignore. With a roar, the Smaug lunged forward and scooped the dead dragon in his jaws. Then with a mad shake of his head, Smaug began to tear the dead dragon's body apart to eat it better.
Seeing as the wyvern was occupied, Clay carefully went around the rocks before running off again. He knew that the situation just got a whole lot worse now that he knew that one of the wyverns was alive. Smaug was able to quickly finish his meal before he heard the sound of someone running. The scent of the fleeing Mudwing caused the wyvern's lips to peel back with a growl. Smaug glared and started to follow after the trail.

The next day came, and Plio stood at the base of the wall. She couldn't stop thinking that Clay was in some kind of trouble. Plio became determined with a crazy decision and started walking to the wall. But before she could start climbing, a voice from behind her said, "And where do you think that you're going?"
Plio turned around and saw Zini walking up to her. His sister sighed and said, "I know I wouldn't be able to catch up to them on foot, so I'm gonna take a much shorter route."
"And why may I ask?" Zini asked, even though he already knew the answer. Plio then said, "Because someone needs to help Clay."
"And we will." Zini said as he stepped closer and placed a hand on her shoulder. Then he said, "And right now, we just have to have faith that Clay's gonna come back to us."
He looked her in the eye and said, "And he will. We just gotta keep our chins up."
"You're right, Zini." Plio sighed in defeat. The sound of heavy footsteps caused the siblings to look back and see Baylene, Meatlug, Toothless, Yar and Suri walking up to them. Suri looked to her mother and asked, "Do you think Clay will be alright?"
"I'm sure that he'll be fine, Suri." Yar reassured her. Plio knew that her brother and father were right; Clay would be fine, and he would come back to them.

The moment that dawn had approached for the herd, Sky had them on their feet again and walked towards the wall. He, Peril and the two Hivewing brothers were standing on a rock next to him. Sky decided to encourage the herd by saying, "We have to keep moving, even if it seems like impossible odds." Gesturing to the rocks behind him he said, "Our survival, our future, is just over these rocks."
Then with a stamp of his talons he shouted, "Now, let us all go home!"
He turned and started climbing up the rocks. But the rest of the herd was a little hesitant to follow. Sky stopped in his tracks and glanced at them. Seeing as how they needed a little more encouragement, he knew that he needed to show them. Glancing about, his gaze fell on the two Hivewing brothers next to his sister. Walking down to them, he then nudged them forward and said, "You'll make it, won't you, boys?"
"No1" Peril interjected, knowing that they could get hurt. Sky glared and said, "Watch them. They can get up there. They're tough!" Then with another nudge he look down to the herd he shouted, "If these two can do it, so can you!"
"They're just kids." Peril argued, seeing that Sky was pushing them all too hard. Sky looked to his sister and said, "We all need to toughen up, Peril, or we won't survive."
His words seemed to sway the herd as they started moving again. The dragon herd started climbing up the rocks while chattering amongst themselves. Peril looked at her brother with a glare that asked if he was happy. Sky was happy to see the herd following his lead. With a satisfied grin, Sky nodded and turned to start climbing again. But before they could make any progress, a familiar voice shouted, "Sky!"
Everyone looked back to see Clay running up to the herd. Peril gasped and a smile crept on her face to see that he was alright. Clay made his way through the herd and warned, "Sky, you need to get the herd out of here! A wyvern is coming this way!"
Everyone started murmuring to themselves and Sky looked about, seeing that there was some disarray. But when he didn't hear any sounds of danger, he ordered the herd, "Keep moving, everyone!"
But when he turned to start climbing, Clay's shout stopped him in his tracks, "No, stop!"
Clay looked to all eyes of the herd and said, "I've been to the valley myself with my friends and family! And we've found a much safer way!"
This caused everyone to start talking amongst themselves. Then they all looked to Sky. Sky didn't believe Clay as he nudged one of the dragonets and shouted, "Go on, you two! Show them!"
"Sky!" Peril said and moved between him and the young dragons. She growled as he said, "You need to listen to him."
Sky looked to her as if she had slapped him in the face with her tail. Clay then told them, "Look, we gotta go right now!"
"And go where?" Sky asked, as if the idea were ludicrous. He turned away from his sister and the dragonets while adding, "Straight to the wyverns?"
"If we hurry, then we can get around them!" Clay said, knowing that they could all get through them. But then gesturing to the rock wall he shouted, "You can't get over the rock wall! There's a sheer drop on the other side!"
Sky snorted before growling at the two to go. Clay became angry by this and shouted, "You're gonna kill the herd, Sky!" Looking to the dragons around them and promised, "I know a better way into the valley and everybody here can make it!" Turning to the opening, Clay started walking and decided to take charge by saying, "Now, follow me!"
Sky growled at the Mudwing trying to take his leadership. He started heading back down and Peril moved in front of him while shouting, "Sky, no!"
But Sky just pushed past his sister before leaping off the rocks. He crashed onto the ground before standing tall. The other dragons backed away as they could tell that Sky was really mad. Then with a stern gaze, Sky roared in anger, "They're staying with me!"
Clay had glanced back to the Skywing, but decided that he had had enough of Sky's attitude about being leader. With a swish of his tail, Clay then said to the herd, "All right. Let's go!"
Sky's eyes widened to this and took it as a challenge. Then with a growl he rushed forward. The herd really moved out of the way as Sky made a beeline for the Mudwing. Clay looked back just as Sky threw himself at him with a roar. Sky was able to knock Clay off his feet but ended up rolling over the Mudwing. As the two started rising up on their feet again, Sky quickly wrapped his forelegs around Clay's neck while biting down on the back of the Mudwing's neck. Clay quickly acted by rolling onto his side, and it worked for a moment when Sky lost his grip on him. But as they rose onto their feet again, Sky once again wrapped his forelegs around Clay before twisting his body and throwing Clay to the ground. Clay grunted when his back hit the ground. Sky tried to claw at him, but Clay was able to get all four feet under the Skywing before tossing him off. Sky yelped when he hit the ground. Both dragons rose up to their feet and glared at each other. From up on the rock, Peril watched with worry for both her brother and her friend. With a gesture to the boys, they all started to make their way down. Clay and Sky circled each other as they continued to glare and growl at the other. Sky snarled as he shook his head before lunging at Clay again. But Clay was able to catch him off guard by leaping forward and hitting Sky in the chest with his head. Sky fell to the ground and grimaced as he slid across the ground. Peril was able to get between the other dragons and they only glanced at her before looking back to the fight. Sky looked to Clay and glared as the Mudwing prepared himself. Sky rose up on his feet and prepared himself as well. The two dragons then charged at each other and lowered their heads. The headbutt turned to Clay's favor as his head was a lot more harder than Sky's. Sky stumbled backwards and Clay took the offensive by standing on his hindlegs and using his wings to disorient Sky even further. The Skywing shook his head to clear it of cobwebs and looked to see Clay come in with a punch to the face. Sky grunted in pain as he once again fell to the ground. Sky felt where the punch landed and felt sore in the spot. Clay then said, "It doesn't have to be this way, Sky."
"I won't let anyone take my herd. No one!" Sky growled and was able to spin his body around. He used his tail to slap Clay in the face and the Mudwing was distracted this time. Sky quickly got back up on his feet and rushed at Clay again. Clay was knocked off his feet when Sky turned his body and kicked him in the face. Not only did Clay feel sore there, but he felt one of the claws nick him on the cheek. Sky followed up with shoving Clay to the ground. Standing over Clay again, Sky opened his jaws wide and looked to rip out the Mudwing's throat. But Clay didn't give him a chance by kneeing Sky in the gut. The wind was knocked out of the herd leader and Clay lashed out with his talons for a punch. The punch busted Sky's lip and a little blood trickled from the wound. Clay stood up and prepared himself for any more of Sky's attacks, but Sky changed tactics this time by grabbing a talon full of dirt. Then in one quick motion he flung it into Clay's face. Clay roared in pain as the dust hurt his eyes and it left him open to an attack. Sky lashed out with his talons and left a four-claw scratch mark on Clay. Clay grunted in pain from the blow and staggered back. Seeing as his foe was distracted, Sky then turned and smacked Clay really hard with his tail. The blow sent Clay flying into a rock wall and small dragons ran off chittering. Clay took a deep breath as his vision cleared. The crash had caused the corner of his mouth to bust and his left cheek as well. But when he looked up, he gasped when he saw Sky rise onto his back legs with a roar and stretched his talons out to end Clay. But he didn't get a chance as a roaring Peril barreled into her brother and it knocked both of them off their feet.
Brother and sister hit the ground and Sky looked to his sister as she stood back up. The herd looked very surprised to see the turn of events. Peril just panted and looked back down at her brother. Peril took a deep breath and turned away from him. A disbelieving Sky shook his head at the thought of his own sister turning away from him. Sky walked over to Clay as the Mudwing tried to stand back up. Clay felt a lot of pain from his wounds and would have fallen back down if Peril didn't move to help him. She placed her head under his and help Clay to stand up again. Clay stumbled a bit as they started walking away from the rock wall. Peril gave her brother one more glance before turning her attention forward. Sky shook his head as he rose to his feet. He couldn't believe that she was leaving and took a deep breath before shouting, "Peril!"
His shout echoed through the rock walls but Peril didn't look back. As much as she loved her brother, she knew that he needed to change his ways. She teared up at what she was doing, but Peril kept her head up and kept walking with Clay. Sky shook his head and quietly said, "No."
Tears started to well up in his eyes too at the thought of not having Peril by his side. The herd then started to follow Clay and Peril out of the canyon, knowing who the real leaders were. All the dragons didn't question the new leaders, only followed them. Sky looked about at the departing herd and began to feel alone. But the Skywing couldn't help but blame himself for what was happening. Clay grunted from the stinging of his wounds and Peril looked to him as they walked. But Clay was able to keep going strong and starting to lead them to safety. Peril glanced to Clay with an impressed grin before carefully leaning up to him while they walked and pressed the side of her face against his. Though startled by the touch, Clay returned it by rubbing against her back. The two shared a brief smile for a moment before a sound echoed through the canyon.
