"You'd think he'd run out of rocks," Macaria heard Percy mutter.
"Swim for it!" Grover said. He and Clarisse plunged into the surf. Annabeth hung on to Clarisse's neck and tried to paddle with one hand, the wet Fleece weighing her down.
But the Cyclops attention wasn't on the Fleece. "You, young Cyclops!" Polyphemus roared. "Traitor to your kind!"
Tyson froze.
"Don't listen to him!" The Jacksons siblings pleaded and Macaria held onto Tyson's arm but he didn't move. "Come on."
"I am not a traitor." Tyson said.
"You serve mortals!" Polyphemus shouted. "Thieving humans!"
Polyphemus threw his first boulder. Tyson swatted it aside with his fist. "Not a traitor," Tyson said. "And you are not my kind." He looked down at Macaria and she felt Polyphemus' eyes on her. "Plus she's here, so I can't be a traitor if I'm helping her."
The elder Cyclops stared down at her, but he didn't seem to get entirely what Tyson was saying. Instead his face twisted into anger. "Death or victory!" Polyphemus charged into the surf, but his foot was still wounded. He immediately stumbled and fell on his face. That would've been funny, except he started to get up again, spitting salt water and growling.
"Macaria! Percy!" Clarisse yelled. "Come on!" They were almost to the ship with the Fleece.
"We need to distract him." Macaria said and Percy nodded.
"No, go," Tyson told them. "I will hold Big Ugly."
"No! He'll kill you." Percy said before Macaria could. "We'll fight him together."
"Together," Tyson agreed.
Percy drew his sword. Polyphemus advanced carefully, limping worse than ever. But there was nothing wrong with his throwing arm. He chucked his second boulder. Percy dove to one side but would've been squashed if Tyson hadn't blasted the rock to rubble. Percy willed the sea to rise and Macaria felt something snap as it began to pour down onto the land.
A twenty foot waved surged Percy up and the water froze like a surfboard under Macaria. Percy looked at her with a smirk as he rode toward Polyphemus and kicked him in the eye and leapt over his head as the water blasted him onto the beach.
"Destroy you!" Polyphemus spluttered. "Fleece stealer!"
"You stole the Fleece!" Percy yelled. "You've been using it to lure satyrs to their deaths!"
"So? Satyrs good eating!"
"The Fleece should be used to heal! It belongs to the children of the gods!"
"I am a child of the gods!" Polyphemus swiped at him, but Percy sidestepped. "Father Poseidon, curse this thief!" He was blinking hard now, like he could barely see.
"Poseidon won't curse me," Percy said, and backed up as the Cyclops grabbed air. "I'm his son, too. He won't play favorites."
Polyphemus roared. He ripped an olive tree out of the side of the cliff and it was aimed towards Macaria but the cracked into thousands of snow flakes as she held her hands up. "Humans not the same! Nasty, tricky, lying!"
Grover was helping Annabeth aboard the ship. Clarisse was waving frantically at them. Tyson worked his way around Polyphemus and tired to get behind him. "Young one!" the older Cyclops called. "Where are you? Help me!"
Tyson stopped.
"You weren't raised right!" Polyphemus wailed, shaking his olive tree club. "Poor orphaned
brother! Help me!"
No one moved. No sound but the ocean and Macaria's heartbeat. Then Tyson stepped forward,
raising his hands defensively. "Don't fight, Cyclops brother. Put down the-" Polyphemus spun toward his voice.
"Tyson!" Macaria shouted and the tree was about to struck Tyson when a large gust of wind the weight of a tornado, smashed into the beach and the tree shattered. Macaria was immediately pushed deep underwater and she tried to calm her frantic heart as she opened her eyes. A cold voice began to sing in her head.
"Wolves asleep amidst the trees
Bats all are swaying in the breeze
But one soul lies anxious wide awake
Fearing all manner of ghouls, hags and wraiths"
She took a breath of the water and tried to swim up only for tree to enter the water, narrowly missing her. The tree froze on contact and Macaria grabbed the frozen branch of the tree as she willed it up.
"For your dolly Polly sleep has flown
Don't dare let her tremble alone
For the witcher, heartless, cold
Paid in coin of gold"
As she made it to the surface the voice went into a hum. She gasped as her took a breath of the oxygen, she still hadn't gotten used to breathing underwater, no matter the circumstances. But she didn't have much time as Polyphemus threw another boulder, and Macaria watched helplessly as it sailed over her head and crashed through the hull of the Queen Anne's Revenge.
You wouldn't believe how fast a ship can sink. The Queen Anne's Revenge creaked and groaned and listed forward like it was going down a playground slide. The ship's masts were already going under.
"Dive!" She heard Percy yell as a rock sailed over their heads. Macaria did as he said and the voice returned growing a little louder very time she breathed in.
"He comes he'll go leave naught behind
But heartache and woe"
Ignored it and looked around frantically for her friends, they were trying to swim, without much luck, in the bubbly trail of the ships's wreckage. Not many people realize that when a ship goes down, it acts like a sinkhole, pulling down everything around it. Clarisse was a strong swimmer, but even she wasn't making any progress. Grover frantically kicked with his hooves. Annabeth was hanging on to the Fleece, which flashed in the water like a wave of new pennies.
Macaria saw Percy swim towards them. No! Macaria thought and Percy snapped up to look at her. I got it!
He paused for a split second, a confused look on his face, but then he nodded. Macaria saw deeper, fighting against the sinkhole with everything she could. Pieces of timbre swirled around her friends but they easily moved themselves away from her. Macaria would've paused to think about what was happening but she grabbed Clarisse who would've been red in the face by the amount of strength she was putting in her body.
"Deep, deep woe."
We need help. Macaria heard Percy thought as she grabbed Grover next.
Yes. Tyson's voice said, loud and clear in her head. Rainbow.
Macaria tried to grab Annabeth but she had let go out the Fleece, unconscious.
Annabeth! She yelled in her head and she felt the darkness take her. The voice echoed so loudly that she had to cover hear ears.
"Birds are silent for the night
Cows turned in as daylight dies
But one soul lies anxious wide awake
Fearing all manner of ghouls, hags and wraiths"
RAINBOW! We need you! Tyson and Percy yelled and Macaria felt her ears ache at the volume. She placed Clarisse, the Fleece and Grover in an air bubble and dug deeper to get Annabeth. Immediately, shapes shimmered in the darkness below-three horses with fish tails, galloping upward faster than dolphins. Rainbow and his friends glanced in their direction and seemed to read the boys thoughts. They whisked into the wreckage, and a moment later burst upward in a cloud of bubbles— and popped the air bubble Macaria had placed.
"My dear dolly Polly shut your eyes
Lie still, lie silent, utter no cries"
Grover, and Clarisse each clung to the neck of a hippocampus and Macaria passed Annabeth to the other as she pushed herself up the surface. The voice began to hum.
Rainbow appeared with Tyson and Percy beside her and Tyson latched onto her and pulled her in the front. Her head was banging, she felt her entire body freeze as a familiar, haunting voice echoed in her mind. She focused her energy on Polyphemus's voice as they raced away.
"As the witcher, brave and bold
Paid in coin of gold"
The Cyclops roaring in triumph, "I did it! I finally sank Nobody!"
"Macaria?" Percy asked. "What's wrong?" He held her close but her entire body go limp as the voice only grew louder.
"He'll chop and slice you
Cut and dice you
Eat you up whole
Eat you whole"
The voice stopped singing. "I'll sing you another lullaby, again." The voice said and Macaria felt darkness build in her vision.
"I really hate my mother…" Macaria whispered as she fell asleep.
