It began to pour as soon as Stiles and Aubrey were driving away from the McCall residence. After the accident, Peter decided to end the date early and took Mrs. McCall home – promising to reschedule when the weather wasn't terrible. The two teens had once again stalked their date, making sure that Scott's mom was not harmed or that anything else happened. Once that little mission was complete, the next goal was for Aubrey to make it home before the rain worsened.
Aubrey snuck a glance at Stiles and noticed that this was the most focused she had ever seen him. She smiled a little bit as she watched his eyes pay attention to all of the rain drops that hit the windshield, and how he scrunched his nose slightly as if his mind was still racing a mile a minute. Before she knew it, he had pulled up next to her house. The rain hit the roof of the car steadily as they sat in silence.
"The rain looks so cold," Aubrey joked, looking out the window at the raindrops hitting the large puddles on the ground.
"A little," Stiles mumbled, "Will you be okay getting back up to your room?"
"Oh yeah, I've done it before in the rain. Not with this house, but still."
Stiles shook his head with a light smile on his face before his eyes widened, as if with an idea. He frantically reached into the backseat to unzip the bag that had been carelessly thrown back there. When his arm moved back to the front seat, his hand had a balled-up piece of fabric in it. Unrolling it revealed a hoodie, but not just a regular hoodie – it was his lacrosse hoodie.
Aubrey quirked her eyebrow up as if to ask what it was for. He answered her silent question aloud though, "You can take it. Maybe it'll help keep you a little bit warmer while you sneak back into your house. Of course, I understand if you don't want too. It is a lacrosse hoodie that I use for, you know, lacrosse, so it might be a bit-"
"Thank you, Stiles," She cut him off before he could get to far in his rambling. "That's very sweet of you." Aubrey lightly took the sweatshirt from his hand and brought it closer to her. With a small smile his way, she tossed the hoodie over her head. Once it was all the way on, she could almost feel the warmth it once held when Stiles wore it earlier.
When she glanced over at the boy, his cheeks were a light shade of pink and he looked away quickly as soon as he noticed she was staring back at him. A crack of thunder brought Aubrey back to reality, making her shift her gaze back to her house. "I guess I should probably head inside."
"Yeah, I guess."
"I'll see you tomorrow Stiles."
"Bye Aubrey." And with that Aubrey threw up the hood of the sweatshirt and bolted out into the rain.
Just as she expected, it was freezing to the touch, but she felt slightly warmer when she looked down at the maroon color that now covered half her body. Before she knew it, she had climbed the slippery vines on the side of the house and made her way onto her balcony. She was inside in a flash, peeling the wet clothes off her skin and replacing them with warm ones. Although for a brief second, she glanced at the soaked sweatshirt and wishing that it was dry.
That thought vanished almost instantly when her phone buzzed with a new text message. It was from Allison. She said it was something urgent and to call as soon as she could. Of course, Aubrey was already hitting the call button, hoping the other girl picked up quickly. Luckily, she did – opening with a casual hello and a car door slamming shut.
"Hey Allison. What was so urgent?"
"You were right again. Kate showed me a werewolf and explained what the hunters did. I don't think I said or did anything to give away that I already knew most things, but now I think she wants me to join in the family hobby." Allison rambled on, "She was telling me that my parents didn't want me to know yet. And then I ended up breaking down which is not who I am at all."
"Okay, okay. It's all going to be fine Ally. Who did she show you? Do you know?"
"It was Derek Hale."
Aubrey closed her eyes before muttering a curse under her breath. "Well that's not great news."
"I don't know how you can deal with this stuff Bre. I mean after she showed me, I had a mini panic attack and I got pulled over."
"Oh. Well I guess I, um, compartmentalize better than most. I also had mini panic attacks too when I first found out, so it hasn't all been smooth sailing."
Aubrey heard Allison sigh on the other end of the phone, before a car started up. "I guess that's kind of reassuring, but I should be good to go now. I shot my bow and I've talked it out with you which I think is what I needed to get back to my usual self."
"Your usual badass self, Ally." Aubrey complimented with a hint of a smile on her lips. "I'll always be here to talk."
"Thanks," Allison breathed out, "I should probably be heading back home."
"Okay. Drive slower and try not to get pulled over." Aubrey pulled the phone away from her ear, reading to hand up before a thought came to her. "Oh, and Allison?"
"Yeah?"
"Please don't do anything stupid." There was a short pause before Allison agreed to be careful, and then the line went dead after a simple goodbye from her friend.
"Alright," Lydia exclaimed out of no where as the three girls were approaching an escalator in the mall. "What's wrong Allison?"
"Nothing's wrong," Allison replied with a sigh in her voice. "I just have a lot on my mind right now."
Lydia flipped a bit of her hair as they all slowly began to rise to the second level of the store. "You could smile at least. Ever hear the saying: 'Never frown. Someone could be falling in love with your smile.'"
"So, we should just be smiling all the time," Aubrey butted in with a baffled look directed at Lydia. "That's kind of exhausting, don't you think?"
Lydia let out a humph sound, "You should both be smiling because I'm buying you both dresses."
"Well then maybe it's not so exhausting," Aubrey gave a cheeky grin to the red head as the three of them exited the escalator.
Allison shifted the topic from dresses to dates for the dance. Since she already knew what Aubrey's plan for the dance was, the conversation was mainly meant for Lydia. "-So, you are going to cancel on whatever jock you said yes to and go with somebody else."
"Who?" Lydia and Aubrey both looked confused as Allison's attention turned towards fragrance section of the store, where Stiles stood smelling a perfume.
"Him," Allison replied simply. Aubrey felt a small drop in her stomach as the trio approached Stiles, but she dismissed whatever feeling it was. She had already asked Boyd to go with her as friends, seeing as how he didn't really go to stuff like this, she wanted to help him get out of his comfort zone a bit. When she asked him, she had been ready for a rejection but was pleasantly surprised when he agreed. After that she had run into Isaac again, making small talk with him about the dance and if he would be going. He said he would think about it, and she replied that she would save him a dance if he did show.
Aubrey didn't even realize that she had tuned out most of the conversation going on with Stiles until the group was moving towards the dresses. As they walked in that direction, Allison and Lydia were ahead of Stiles and Aubrey – giving them some time to talk. "So you're finally getting a chance to take out your dream girl," Aubrey started off casually.
"Yeah," Stiles replied with a small grin on his face as he watched Lydia walk in front of them. "I've thought about what it would be like, but never thought it would actually happen."
"Well, I'm glad to hear you're so excited."
"What about you? Who are you going with to the formal, we haven't really had time to talk about it?"
They neared the first row of dresses, and Aubrey began to admire them before answering Stiles' question. "I'm going with a kid named Boyd, as friends. And I promised a dance to someone else if they showed up to the formal."
She didn't glance up at her friend after she answered, keeping her gaze on a hideous purple dress, so she missed the slight dip in his shoulders and the frown that blinked across his face. Stiles didn't get the chance to respond as Lydia had called him over to carry the dresses she picked out. He rushed to her side almost like a lost puppy, and Aubrey continued her search for the perfect dress.
About thirty minutes passed, or so, before Lydia and Stiles wandered off to the dressing room with a lot of outfits to try. Aubrey and Allison just continued to look through the racks, occasionally holding a dress up to themselves against the nearby mirror. When Allison held up a red and white dress, Aubrey noticed the man staring at the two of them. Apparently, so did her dark-haired friend. However, that didn't stop Peter Hale from approaching the two.
"That's not your color." He said plainly to Allison after a beat of silence. Aubrey made her way around the row of clothes so that she could be closer to the two of them. "Sorry if that was intrusive," the alpha continued, "Considering your skin tone, I would go lighter."
"Cause I'm pale?" Allison indulged him, not knowing that he was a dangerous man to be next to.
Aubrey made her way next to her friend, but the man gave no reaction to her – as if he didn't even see her – and continued to give advice. "Fair. You can't call skin like yours pale, not skin that perfect."
"Okay," Allison smiled, hanging the dress back on the rack. This was when Aubrey decided to insert herself into the conversation.
"Well, that was nice of you. I guess we should move to lighter colored dress then," She never took her eyes off of Peter as she spoke.
Peter forced a pleasant smile as he finally made eye contact with Aubrey. She held no look of fear on her face because if he really wanted to hurt either of them, he would have done so, but this means he has another agenda. "I was just going to offer another perspective on the matter," he countered.
Before either girl could comprehend his words, he reached for a dress behind him and then for Allison's hand. He compared her skin to the dress as he declared that that dress was a much better fit. Allison pulled her hand away as soon as he loosened his grip on her. Aubrey narrowed her eyes at him as the three fell into an uncomfortable silence.
"What kind of dance are you going to," he questioned again, keeping his eyes on Allison, pretending that Aubrey did not exist.
Aubrey answered anyway, "Formal."
Peter wasn't given another opportunity to ask another question before a lady came over the store speaker and described Allison's car – apparently it was being towed. Allison let out a gasp before she bolted for the exit. Aubrey stayed behind with Peter who looked perplexed, with a hint of anger. That's when he finally acknowledged that you were here in his presence.
"Are you really trying to get me angry? Because messing with my plans is not the smartest move, sweetheart. Especially since you are just a human." He flashed his red eyes for a second in order to show that he isn't playing around.
Aubrey sucked in a breath, still keeping eye contact. "I had nothing to do with that, but you should really stop targeting our little group of friends because it hasn't seemed to work out for you so far."
He contemplated her words, "You're right. So far it hasn't worked, but since you have been such a pain in my neck, who always seems to be getting in the way. You will be one of the first people I take care of sweetheart."
With that, Peter turned and exited the store, only stopping briefly to whisper something under his breath. When she could no longer see his form, she let out the shuddered breath she had been holding in. She had royally pissed off an alpha werewolf, which was not the smartest move, and now she was a little scared of what the consequence would be in the future.
Aubrey had always thought she looked better in darker colors rather than lighter colors when it came to dresses. Lydia had tried to get her to go with a brighter color in order to stand out in the crowd, but she had to reject her friend because she didn't feel like being in the spotlight. So, instead of going in a white or silver strapless dress like her two best friends, Aubrey was going in a beautiful short, dark blue dress. It had a deep V-neck shape with a skirt that flowed around her body instead of hugging it, and as she looked in the mirror Aubrey couldn't help but smile at how pretty the dress made her look.
A knock at her bedroom door made her glance away from the full body mirror and at the person now opening her door. Gen peaked inside and let out an audible gasp as soon as she saw her niece. "Oh sweetie! You look absolutely stunning."
Aubrey smiled at her aunt, sitting down on the edge of her bed so she could put on her heels. "Thank you. I wasn't sure about this whole dance thing, but dressing up is kind of fun."
"I'm sure you'll have a blast with your friends." Gen took a seat next to Aubrey on her bed before pulling out a jewelry box. Opening the lid revealed a gorgeous necklace with silver diamonds forming an intricate pattern before coming to a small peak at the end.
Aubrey stared at the necklace in awe before Gen gently rested it against her neck and attached the clips in the back. "This was one of my old necklaces from back when I was in high school and going to dances like this," Gen said as the necklace fell into place. "I thought you might like it for your first formal at Beacon Hills."
"Oh, it's absolutely beautiful Gen. Thank you so much." Aubrey gave her Aunt a quick hug before the two stood up and made their way out of Aubrey's room.
"Of course," Gen said as the two of them began to descend the stairs to the main floor. Her Uncle was taking a few pictures as they did so in order to the 'capture the moments' as he liked to put it. Once Aubrey made it to the bottom of the steps, Finn took some more photos before finally allowing his niece to grab the car keys and her small purse. Since she was meeting Boyd at the school instead of riding with him, she wanted to at least be punctual.
"Alright kiddo, have fun but not too much fun," Finn almost yelled as Aubrey opened the front door.
"No promises," Aubrey grinned back at her two guardians, "Love you both." With that the young teen was out the door and to her car in seconds, and once she started the engine she was on her way to the high school. As she drove, with the music playing lightly in the background, Aubrey almost felt like her old self before moving to Beacon Hills. That part of her was a little more outgoing and excited about doing new things, and as she continued her journey to the school, Aubrey promised herself to be more enthusiastic tonight.
It didn't take that much longer before she was driving into the parking lot, searching carefully for Boyd as she put her car in park and got out. They had talked about meeting at a particular spot, but she didn't see him yet. However, she did see a familiar blue jeep and four familiar faces standing close to it before two walked off towards the building. Stiles and Lydia seemed to linger by the jeep, but Aubrey felt like she shouldn't intrude on their moment. Instead, she looked back at the meeting spot and found Boyd slowly making his way towards it.
Aubrey walked in the direction, and when she got into ear range she called out to Boyd. He turned at the sound of her voice with a small smile playing on his lips, "Hey Aubrey."
"You look handsome," Aubrey complimented him as she came to a stop next to him.
"And you look beautiful."
Aubrey blushed a little, not completely used to being complimented by anyone outside of her family or her two best friends on occasion. "Thank you. So are you ready to get your party on, I haven't been to an actual dance like this before."
"Me neither," Boyd laughed shyly, "So we'll both be trying something new. Thank you for the invite too, I usual never go to these sorts of things because I'll be alone."
"Well not tonight," Aubrey exclaimed as she linked her arm with his trying to guide him to the front doors. "You and me will have a blast tonight and dance our hearts away."
Boyd just shook his head as Aubrey led the way into the school, the sparkly decorations pointing them in the direction of the gym where the music was blasting. As they entered the dance, Aubrey could feel Boyd tense up a little. She looked up at him only to see his eyes scanning the crowd of people jumping around to the beat of the song. She gave his arm a slight squeeze before they were moving again deeper into the room.
"So, do you want to dance first or hit the punch bowl," Aubrey practically shouted up to her friend.
"We can get drinks first if you want," He replied back, shouting as well to be heard over the band.
Aubrey nodded and the two walked over to the punch table, Boyd grabbing two cups for the both of them. He handed her a cup before taking a sip of his own, she copied his action as she looked around at the people in the gym – spotting Stiles and Lydia at a table, and Jackson and Allison standing awkwardly near another punch table. As she continued to look around, she spotted a face she did not expect to see. Once she caught his eye, she waved him over much to the confusion of Boyd who didn't know him.
"Isaac," Aubrey smiled kindly at him, "I didn't expect you to come."
"Well," he looked towards the ground, avoiding eye contact with her and Boyd. "I thought I might give it a try." Isaac glanced up briefly at Aubrey before choosing to look any where but her.
"Boyd this is my friend Isaac. And Isaac this is my, um, date Boyd." Aubrey took another sip of her drink as the two made eye contact and nodded to acknowledge the existence of one another. "I think we were just about to hit the dance floor if you want to join us."
Isaac's eyes found their way back to Aubrey's, with much more anxiety shining through them than before. "Oh, um, I don't want to intrude too much. I was just going to, uh, grab some food as well, so I'll catch up with you later."
"You better because I still promised you a dance," she grinned at him as he gave her an awkward smile back before walking towards another table. Aubrey turned her attention back to her friend date. He looked down at her with questioning eyes, but she pulled him to the dance floor before any words could be spoken.
The two of them ended up dancing together for a while, longer than Aubrey had been expecting since she knew Boyd was shy and likely way out of his comfort zone. Eventually about half way through the dance and after the abrupt stop due to Scott McCall, Isaac had found the couple again and joined in bashfully at Aubrey's insistence. Boyd didn't seem to mind too much as he had relaxed a bit compared to when the two boys were first introduced. The trio continued to dance for a while longer before Boyd excused himself for a break. Aubrey watched as he disappeared out of the gym doors, knowing he would be back in a little bit, and of course as soon as he was out of sight the current song faded into a slow song.
Everyone around Aubrey and Isaac began to pair up and lightly sway to the slow beat of the music, which is what likely promoted Aubrey to ask if he wanted to dance. A light blush found its way to his cheeks as he carefully approached her and gently placed his hands on her waist, Aubrey's own hands linking together behind his neck. Isaac still avoided complete eye contact, but would occasionally look at her as they swayed along. Everything was going smoothly, until she spotted Stiles and Lydia slow dancing together. For whatever reason, Aubrey felt her stomach drop again at the two, but that stomach drop quickly shifted to concern as she watched Lydia frantically look around her. Aubrey watched her friend have a small conversation with Stiles before she looked up and found Aubrey's gaze.
Soon enough Lydia was gliding over to the dancing couple. "Mind if I steal her away for a few minutes?"
Isaac seemed shocked that Lydia was actually talking to him, only able to get a quiet okay before his dancing partner was being led out of the gym. As the two left the dance, Aubrey spotted Boyd heading in their direction.
"Hey Boyd," Aubrey greeted lightly, "Lydia needs my help with something really quick, but I should be back in no time. You could grab us a table or something?"
"Okay." Boyd glanced cautiously at the popular girl standing next to his date. "I'll see you in a bit then."
With one last smile in his direction, Aubrey allowed herself to be pulled away by one of her best friends. Eventually, the two girls found themselves walking outside near the lacrosse field as Lydia explained her dilemma, wanting Aubrey's help in finding her ex-boyfriend since she didn't know where he went. Aubrey reluctantly agreed, openly stating her opinions on the no-good lacrosse player as they searched.
As they walked around the dark field, Aubrey felt an odd sensation tingle across her arm as the hairs on the back of her neck stood up. Her friend didn't seem to notice anything strange as the two got closer to one of the bleachers, that is until the stadium lights began to turn on one by one causing both girls to turn in circles looking for the culprit. Lydia began to shout Jackson's name, thinking it was him who turned on the lights. However, Aubrey had a good feeling it was not him who was doing this and her theory was confirmed when she spotted a dark figure coming out of the woods, directly towards them.
"Oh shit," Aubrey muttered once she could finally make out the features of Peter Hale. "Lydia, run."
Aubrey grabbed a hold of Lydia's arm and yanked the girl in the direction of the school, hearing a distance voice call out to the two of them. But despite the person's cries and Aubrey's actions, Peter was quicker. He advanced on both girls faster than Aubrey had ever seen. He attacked her first, using his claws and werewolf strength to throw Aubrey into the bleachers they were near. Unfortunately, she didn't have time to change the direction of her body, so her head hit the metal of the stands, which sent her vision swimming. Dark spots began appearing in the corner of her eyes seconds later before everything faded to black.
