Chapter 12: Misunderstandings and heart-to-hearts

Lizzy barely touched any of her food at tea-time; she was too nervous about meeting Lysander, especially after what James said to her. The butterflies in her stomach turned into snakes as James and Lysander came into the hall together. She already had Sadie sat on one side of her. On the other side was Freddie' Lizzy was Bethany Craig. Opposite Sadie was Indigo, which was slightly awkward. Still, she just spoke quietly to Bethany and Josie Bell, who was next to Indigo. James sat opposite Freddie and had Adrian next to him. Lysander sat next to Freddie opposite Adrian, and Rory was next to Adrian.

Consequently, she hardly spoke to Lysander at all throughout the meal. However, precisely at 7, Lysander stood up and, without looking at Lizzy, stood up and walked silently out of the hall. After 2 minutes had passed, which she spent wondering whether to follow him or not, she finally stood up and told Sadie she would see her in the common room. She saw him leaning on the wall opposite the Great Hall.

"Hey." She said, walking up to him.

"Hi, you ready to go?" He replied, pushing himself off the wall.

"Yep, I have all the books in my bag that we are going to need."

"Okay, let's get going then." They headed outside and started walking towards the lake, "so, how are you?" Lysander said. He kicked himself for asking something so stupid, he'd been planning this night all year, and that was all he could come up with.

"I am fine, thank you." Lizzy replied, "how are you?"

"I'm good." 'Well done, Ly,' he thought, the best way to kill a conversation, but he couldn't let it get awkward. "How are you finding Hogwarts?"

"I really like it; it's huge, though, so it's so easy to get lost. What about you?"

"Same, I really like it too, and I have got lost so many times it's unreal."

"Right erm so, shall we get started on this essay?" She said, sitting under a large oak tree near the lake.

"Sure, did you get the books?"

"Yep, I got two I thought would be useful; The ins and outs of Transfiguration and The Reasons for Transfiguration. So basically, you have to start the essay with an introduction briefly explaining the points you will go into more detail in the main body of the essay."

"Yeah, I did that. Is this okay?" Lysander said, giving her the essay.

"Yeah, it's good," she said, looking over it, "You need to be more specific, though. Instead of just saying 'the principles of transfiguration is' and listing them, give an example of each one maybe just to pad it out more."

"Okay, I'll do that then." He said, rewriting his introduction. After he finished writing it, Lizzy took it off him and checked it. "Lizzy?" He said nervously.

"Yeah, what's up." She replied, looking up from his essay.

"We should, erm, do you think we should maybe do this again, sometime?"

"Yes, I am enjoying myself."

"Me too, you're a good friend Lizzy." Any butterflies that Lizzy had in her stomach turned into a very heavy. He'd just friend-zoned her! Well, any hope of anything happening between them had been eradicated.

"You're a good friend to Lysander. Do you need any help with this essay? Your introduction is fine."

"No, I think I'll be okay now. Can I borrow your books, please? I'll take them back to the library for you." He said as Lizzy was packing up her stuff.

"See you later, Lysander." She said, standing up and walking away. He knew he had done something wrong but didn't know what, so he shrugged and walked up to the library alone.

"I don't know if you are aware, Liam, but I have been having a lot of complaints about you." Ginny said gently, looking at the top of his head as he was looking down, "do you anything about your heritage?"

"No, my Auntie would never tell me. All she said was that I was special, and people may not understand me, so they may treat me bad. She also said that I looked like my father when he was young."

"What's your Aunties name?" She questioned

"Lya." He responded quietly, looking behind him as if she would walk through the door at any point.

"Did she bring you up?"

"Yes."

"Did you know your father or mother at all?"

"No, they were both dead long before I was born."

"Do you know anything about them?" She said gently.

"A bit, I know that my dad was called Thomas and he was a pureblood, and my mum was also a half

blood called Bell."

"Is Bell a nickname or her real name?"

"I'm not sure it's just what Auntie Lya refers to her as."

"Is your Auntie Lya, your real auntie?"

"She says she is, but I don't think she is."

"Why do you say that?"

"Because when she talked about my mother and her when they were children, she says 'my mother' and 'her mother' instead of 'our mother,' and it's my mother she says she is sisters with."

"That's very clever to pick up on that, Liam."

"Thank you."

"Okay, well, your schoolwork is at an excellent standard well done, and I have nothing else to discuss with you, so you can go."

"Thank you, miss."

The next few weeks passed quickly, and before they knew it was the last week in February, it was the quidditch match between Ravenclaw and Slytherin. Ravenclaw caught the snitch, but as Slytherin was ahead by 10 points to 0, they won the game. The teachers were pilling homework on them, especially for those studying for OWLS and Newts. Even 1st years said their homework load was hefty, in which a 7th year would show them their workload. The fourth quidditch match of the year was 2 weeks later in the 2nd week of March, and it was Gryffindor against Hufflepuff. Gryffindor won 250 to 200 even though Hufflepuff caught the snitch. This meant Gryffindor was first in the running to win the cup.

Before they knew where they were at, it was Easter. Lizzy and Lysander still talked, but she found it a bit awkward. Especially since she actually thought he liked her. She decided to ask Dominique about it as she was the closest girl cousin she had that was also older.

"Dom, can we talk a minute, please?" It was a few days after Dom fell out with Victoire and Teddy. Lizzy didn't know much, only that Victoire had betrayed her trust or something. Anyway, they were in the Gryffindor common. Dom seemed to be a lot better as she actually agreed to talk to Lizzy and moved away from her friends.

"Sure, what's up, Liz?"

"What do you do when you think you like one of your brother's best friends?" She didn't really know where to start.

"Does this boy like you back?" Dom enquired.

"Jamie thought he did, and I kinder thought he did because he was always really nice and spoke to me more than the other girls, and he asked me if I'll help him with his homework. But when I did, he said that I'm a really good friend. He friend-zoned me!" Dom looked thoughtful for a minute before answering.

"If a girl did that to a boy, it would be friend-zoning them, but boys find it harder to show emotion. So maybe he does like you, but he is doesn't really know how to tell you. Plus, if he is James best friend, he may be worried about how he will react." She did have a point. "Just wait for a bit Liz, boys mature slower than girls, so it takes them longer to realise things. Talk to him about it."

"And embarrass myself?"

"Ask James or Freddie then or Sadie, you're friends with her, right?" Sadie seemed like the most comfortable option, but James or Freddie may actually what was going on

"Okay, I will do, thanks, Dom."

"No worries, Lizzy." She said, walking back to her friends. Lizzy walked out of the common room and accidentally bumped into just the person she was looking for.

"James?"

"Lysander! What's up, mate?"

"Erm," He said, putting his hands in his pocket.

"If it's about Lizzy, tell her you like her she's going insane."

"She told you she liked me?"

"She told me with horror that you friend-zoned her."

"How did I do that?"

"By saying you were really good friends."

"I didn't mean that I didn't like her. I meant she means a lot to me, as she's my friend."

"Girls don't think like that mate, I know that from past experience," James said, puffing his chest out.

"All that experience with two girlfriends."

"That's a lot for an 11-year-old."

"It's not something to brag about, Jamie," Lizzy said, coming around the corner, seeing Lysander made the butterflies start up again.

"I'll leave you two to it, shall I?" He said, walking away smirking.

"Lizzy, I wanted to talk to you about what I said a few weeks ago. You are a really good friend, but I do like you more than that. I was scared about telling you that in case your family corner me or something."

"Oh, they will; Jamie isn't the one you need to worry about its Teddy. If you don't hurt me, he won't hurt you." He gulped at that, and Lizzy didn't blame him. Teddy could be scary when he was the protective big brother.

"I'll take my chances. Will you be my girlfriend, then?" He asked nervously

"Yes, Lysander." She replied, smiling at him.

As James walked away from Lysander and Lizzy, he bumped into Teddy. "James, we need to talk." Teddy grabbed his shoulder and all but marched him to the magic room. They went into one of the side rooms, and Teddy locked the door magically and put privacy spells up.

"What about?" James enquired. Teddy sat opposite him and leaned forward towards him.

"Who do you want to be?" What kind of question was that?

"Erm…"

"Do you want to be arrogant and mean?"

"No, Teddy, I don't understand?"

"James, I have noticed you change once you arrived at Hogwarts. You seem more concerned about laughing at your sister's expense. You pick on the smallest kids and seem to care more about fitting in than being a good person." James' heart sank. Honestly, he acted like this to hide the fact that he was really struggling. "What is going on? I need you to be honest with me."

"How?"

Teddy was taken aback, becoming more curious. "Start with why are you being so arrogant and cocky? I know most first years are like that, but you are definitely the worst," He said severely. Maybe except for Indigo." he added as an afterthought.

"I really want people to like me, Teddy. I know they won't like me if I am not like that."

"Jamie," Teddy said softly. He never called him that, but it got James' attention. "people may or may not like who you truly are. Your friends may change, but that needs to happen. Your true friends will stick with you, no matter what. And your family certainly will."

"What if the real me isn't likable. I am scared, Teddy."

"I know the real you, and you are very likable. Why are you scared, bud?"

"I have all of these feelings and thoughts in my head. I am scared of what will happen if people find out.

"What thoughts and feelings?"

"I hate who I am." Teddy was shocked but tried to hide it.

"Why?"

"I am a bully, I am not good enough, I know everyone secretly hates me."

"You terrified that people hate you but believe they do anyway?" Teddy summarised. Trying to show James how contradictory that was.

"Pretty much. I know it makes no sense." James said, putting his head into his hands. He looked so vulnerable.

"Jamie, we are going to talk to Neville and get you some help." The colour drained from his face, but before he could protest, Teddy said firmly, "No, it's happening. You are not alone in this. Neville has dealt with this stuff before, and he won't tell your dad unless you are someone else is in danger."

"How do you know this?"

Teddy smiled, "Because he helped me."

Authors note: This is edited at 2AM on 4 hours of sleep, so probs not the best I've ever done. It's very teenage chapter in content, so bare with me. I have also changed the plot summary and title of the story. This book and the next and prequels to the 3rd book when the actions actually starts. Much love, Abs xx
