So somebody asked why I didn't name Jaune's hawk Gwaihir. The only response I have to that is...

We don't use none of that dirty knife ear speak around here, boy. Humans are the best race! The Xenos must be purged!

Whoa, sorry, I lost control of myself there... I killed too many other races in DnD. Those kobolds pissed me off. Had to kill the men, the women, and the children. Just like the sand people in Star Wars.

My real answer to that is I'm the least versed person on Tolkien's books. My only experience is in the Shadow of Mordor games.

However, other than that. If you want an image of Ruby's armour. Look up, viking lamellar armour and find the image of the bearded guy holding a cup. That's the image I had in my head.

"Ruby, let's see it," Yang spoke up, waiting outside the smithy with Jaune and Weiss.

Jaune knew Yang was about as excited as Ruby was to have that armour done. While not as much of a weapons aficionado as Ruby and Jaune was, she still enjoyed customising her own kit or checking out someone else's. This time, it was more about her little sister getting some good armour to protect herself. It gave her some peace of mind knowing a stray arrow wouldn't be able to hurt her sister. Jaune made sure it was going to be his best piece just because of that.

He spent the entire night making sure the steel was going to be the strongest it could. Every plate was hammered out to imbue Tubal Cain's blessing into the metal or completely reforged if it was found wanting. Though, Jaune didn't want to stop there and added a few extra touches of his own to give the armour some flair. He wanted to make sure the armour had some personality that fit Ruby.

"Okay, I'm coming out!"

Opening the door, Ruby stepped out from within the hut. She wore the lamellar coat over her gambeson and chainmail. The plates had all been painted black to both protect the metal and reflect her style. Between each row of the steel scales was a red leather band tying each together. Along the hems of the shoulder pads and the waist were the same leather stitched along to hold everything on the leather padding. To top it off, Jaune used some very fluffy white sheeps pelt around the lamellar's collar to contrast the rest of the scheme.

Jaune could have sliced across it with his sword, and there wouldn't even be a scratch. Now only if he could have forged this with some enchanted steel for greater effect...

I wonder where I can get the spell to make some of my own? Maybe I should talk to Theresia...

It was undoubtedly better than hunting draugr for the steel. Mass manufacturing would pretty much allow Jaune to outfit all of his friends with the best available armour and he was sure Alexandre wouldn't protest. Though the alloy would be different from what the old Valeaens were able to create. Maybe he could make a better version of it or try to create a facsimile.

"Nice," Yang complimented, punching Jaune's shoulder encouragingly. "You do good work. Why the fuck are you wasting time killing monsters?"

"I'm sure you would be able to make more money adventuring, but students would be paying everything they could to get a hold of something like this," Weiss expressed as she inspected the plates, pulling on parts to make sure nothing came loose.

"I like it better," Jaune replied, shrugging his shoulders. "What's the point if I'm going to be bored doing a job I'm good at?"

"I feel you," Yang conceded. "If I wasn't big on adventuring and had a job I was good at, I would probably make a shit ton of money and retire."

"Though you are only able to do this because of the Exp you earn from fighting, so it makes it easier to be a smith in the meantime," Weiss added on. "Alexandre has probably spent his entire life getting to that level."

"Also, my hammer," Ruby reminded Weiss. "That thing's amazing!"

"Yeah, it is," Jaune agreed excitedly. "But what about you two, do you guys want something made? I can't do it before we leave, but after we're done, we can work something out."

Weiss could use some armour. Maybe a breastplate or brigandine would fit her nicely. She doesn't need to move around a lot, and something solid would benefit her more. Though, with the added benefit of enchantments, it would make the plate a much better choice. Something like that would be able to better bear the burden of magic than leather and steel.

Yang, on the other hand, needed something lighter, but still protective. Possibly some steel spaulders covering up her arms with two plates over her chest, but the rest had to be leather. Her legs would benefit from some greaves or chausses paired with the former. Blake would be a good example to build off of, though, her armour was almost entirely leather.

"Eh, eventually I'll need something, but I really don't have any reason to get armour like that right now," Yang replied, raising her hand to eye level and seemingly activating something.

Her hands slowly moulded themselves into a more lizardlike appearance with heavily scaled digits and large claws. Though Jaune was unable to see under her clothes, what exposed skin remained grew a lighter coating of greenish-brown scales along the spine and her flanks. These scales climbed her back, stopping just below her cheekbones. From her rear grew a large lizardlike tale with a forked tip. Even her eyes changed, producing a vertical slit pupil and turning blood red.

"See, Sun Dragon doubles my defence, strength, and constitution when I use it," Yang explained, grabbing a rock off the ground and crushing it between her hands. "If we're just doing easy quests now, I don't need anything... Unless you had some gryphon hunting in mind Jauney-Boy?"

"I'm gonna take a hard pass on that," Jaune replied without hesitation, though still marvelling at the ability. "I don't have anything to get the gryphon out of the sky yet."

Not gonna use the Longinuslanze on it. Too dangerous...

"I suppose I could use some armour, Dreizehn is going to need a set some time as well..."

"Yes, we must protect him at all cost," Yang demanded at the thought of the dog getting hurt.

"Oooo-oooo, we can draw something up on the way to Mountain Glenn," Ruby suggested excitedly. "I'll grab my stuff after we get done with Professor Ozpin!"

...

Breaking off from Weiss and Yang, Jaune and Ruby quickly made their way to the administrative building. In her new armour, the girl was prancing about playing out some fantasy in her head—the chest piece giving her the feeling of being a knight. A funny sight from Jaune's point of view, but he would have done the same at one point in time.

Now, Ruby needed to break in her armour and get used to how it felt. So, wearing it on the trip there was going to be her burden. Jaune had some tools he would bring to make adjustments if need be, but everything else would have to be handled by a proper smith. Doing anything with the metal absent a forge was going to verge on impossible.

"So, how does the armour fit you," Jaune asked as they stepped up to the front desk.

"It's great," Ruby exclaimed, tapping on the front plates. "I barely feel the weight at all!"

Before either could speak to the woman handling the desk, she waved them through. Ruby and Jaune shared a look as they continued up the stairs leading to Ozpin's office.

"Nothings pulling or too tight," he asked again.

"Nope, the gambeson's a little hot, but I have to get used to it."

"Yeah, you're not supposed to wear it when we're travelling, but once it feels comfortable, you can take it off."

Jaune usually did that with his breastplate and gambeson. They were easy enough to take off, so he didn't run any risk of having to put on a full suit of armour in the heat of battle. Once he could wear the eagle's armour, he would have to carefully pick and choose when he took it off. The only safe places to do so would be in town where he could use guards to hold off attackers while he donned his kit.

"Hopefully, we can ride a carriage the whole way there," Ruby expressed. "I don't know how it's gonna feel if I have to wear it when we walk."

"Shoulders are gonna hurt, but we can always add some more padding," Jaune pointed out, tapping on his right collar bone where he added a few squares of cloth to help his breastplate. "This trip's gonna be our test run for the armour. We can work out whatever kinks we need to when we're done. Heck, we might get lucky and find an even better set than the one I made."

"Ooooo, that would be awesome," Ruby exclaimed, turning to him as they climbed. "It would be enchanted steel too! Hopefully, we don't have to reforge it, but they would be so old everything would be all rusty."

"Only thing that matters is where we find it," Jaune added on. "Blake and I found our swords wrapped in cloth and put inside barrels of oil. I don't know how the oil was still there, but it preserved the swords amazingly well."

The only thing Jaune could guess was that the old Valeaens knew their stuff. Preservation of weapons for hundreds of years was not going to be beyond them. They managed to preserve a wooden bow for Blake somehow. Everything else in the tomb was rusted or completely rotten, but those few pieces were intact.

As they reached the top of the tower, those same guards welcomed the teens back inside the office. To Jaune, this place was starting to get more familiar given how many times he'd been called up here before. At least this time the boy wasn't being called upon to partake in some underground war.

"Mr Arc, Ms Rose," Professor Goodwitch acknowledged as they were allowed in. The woman looking much better than she had a few days ago. Though, the bandages were still apparent under her clothing along with the bruises on her face and cheeks.

She and Ozpin were gathered around a desk looking through some documents. As the teens entered, they quickly shut the folders and stacked them neatly. Jaune thought it was some sort of secret meeting they ended up walking in on. The idea made Jaune's spine tingle.

"What did the two of you need," Ozpin asked, leaning back and crossing one of his legs over the other.

"Well, we need a way to bring a ton of gold, jewels, and artefacts back to the academy," Ruby began nervously. Her words did not help clue the adults into what they were doing. She was unknowingly trying to keep the city a secret.

"I'm going to assume you found something," Ozpin replied, leaning forward and interlocking his fingers as he stared at the teens. "It would help us if you were more specific."

"Blake kinda found a super large underground city that's probably bigger than Vale," Ruby confessed still keeping her nervous demeanour up. "She made a ton of notes and drawings of it."

Jaune handed over the small book to Goodwitch who began reading through it with Ozpin. The look on the woman's face was one of awe. Both adults were gobsmacked at the sight of the ruins through only a picture.

"Professor, this is a treasure trove of artefacts, perhaps Dr Oobleck should accompany them," Goodwitched beseeched the man in a whisper. "This should be a proper excavation, not a dungeon run for treasure!"

"No, it would be better to send in the scouts now and then allow Bartholomew to investigate later," Ozpin countered, flipping through some more pages. "He could go down there with a team and document everything when the draugr and traps have been cleared out."

"Ummm, you're gonna have to talk to Blake about that," Jaune interrupted, earning the glare of Goodwitch and curious glance of Ozpin. "She's the one who found the cave, so it's her decision and her show."

"Then I will discuss this with Ms Belladonna once you return," Ozpin conceded, closing the book and sliding it back across the table. "However, if you want the best method of retrieving as much loot as possible, I would suggest Professor Goodwitch's teleportation magicons." He gestured over to the woman who pulled one out of a case on her side. "And given the size and general scope of this discovery, I ask that your team penetrate as far as you can into the ruins, marking out the paths as you go along. If you can disable traps and such along the way, I'm sure Dr Oobleck would appreciate that. This will act as the requirements for a quest alongside retrieving a sufficiently powerful artefact for us."

It's a quest?!

"So, like a staff," Ruby asked for clarification.

"If there is one of such power or perhaps say, a set of old intact historical documents," Ozpin replied. "Anything that makes the magicon worth it. Doesn't matter if it's a sword or the city leader's crown jewels."

"Then we'll take it," Jaune agreed confidently. Goodwitch handed him the crystal and a set of documents. "We should be back in two weeks."

"Good luck..."

...

Exiting the building, Jaune and Ruby looked over the paper Goodwitch had given them. It was a scroll with Vale's official seal on it as were most of the documents presented to the teens when accepting quests. Though, this one was more generic, not mentioning any specific task.

"So, we're just representatives of Vale, working in the name of the King," Jaune summarised as he scanned through the document. "Guess this will help get us past any of the lords down south..."

Even if the group wasn't going to be in Vale, none of the lords down there would fuck with them. That letter gave them full immunity under the King, and they could enjoy their time peacefully. The fact they were adventurers would give normal peasants something to think about as well. No one wanted the trouble harassing Beacon students could bring anyway.

"But it won't help with the Church, won't it," Ruby expressed, her voice filled with doubt. "Guess we're gonna have to follow Blake's map then."

Yeah, that's gonna add a few days to the trip, but it's better than Grosche...

Jaune wasn't too familiar with the city, but what he did know was their liberal use of the guillotine and burning people at the stake. It was enough for him to never want to go there on top of what he already knew about the Church. So, sticking to the coastline and forested areas outside their territory was gonna have to be the plan.

"Let's go find the others and show them what we came up with," Jaune said, urging Ruby along.

It was a short walk to the women's dorms were everyone was gathering. Ren and Sun already took care of Jaune's gear for him while he handled Ozpin. While he trusted them to grab the right stuff, he made sure to pack everything into a single bag so there wouldn't be any problems. However, everyone else had their stuff piled up in the middle of them while they waited around.

"Took you guys long enough, I was getting bored," Yang called out as the two approached. The blonde laid back on a stone bench next to Pyrrha, who was reading a book.

"Oh please, you're going to be bored enough sitting in the back of a carriage all day long, Weiss retorted, walking past Yang. "I don't want to hear it!"

Yang blew a raspberry towards Weiss as a reply only for it to be ignored. Jaune did his best to ignore them both.

"So, what did everyone bring," Jaune asked, looking through the pile of bags for his own. "I brought a bunch of my tools and monster hunting gear."

Finding it, he removed the small compartment where he kept those tools. A few new pieces joined them—an iron ladle with a narrow pour spout and set of tongs with a small mould on end. There were also several silver and lead bars for making ammunition on the go.

"Ooo, is that the stuff for the bullets," Ruby exclaimed as she went for the mould. Opening and closing the actual mould itself, she experimented with all the moving parts to see how it worked. "We should make a bunch of these tonight!"

The first few were pretty easy to make. The mould was able to cast half-inch balls in under a minute for each. Dropping them into a small cup of water to cool was what took the longest, but they were pretty solid projectiles that would easily kill some goblins. The best part about them was how one could find the bullet and melt it down to have a brand new missile.

"Bullets," Sun asked with a raised eyebrow, looking over Ruby's shoulder at some of the few Jaune had prepared prior. "Dude, you guys should have told me! I would have gotten a sling!"

"Sorry," Jaune apologised, laughing nervously. "We can pick one up in Mountain Glenn."

Guess he knows how to use one too...

"I brought a bunch of clothes," Yang stated, waving her arm vertically to bring attention to herself. "And some rations to last a few days for everyone when we're outside of town."

"Good, we might want to pick some more up," Pyrrha added on, sharpening her sword as she did so. "I can carry more if need be. I only have my clothing and items to care for my weapons, so there's space."

"We're gonna need the food down in the dungeon, so having more than what we think we need is a good idea," Blake agreed, opening her back to inspect the contents. Her mind was running through several scenarios that would require new gear to be purchased or brought up. "I brought a few dozen bags to hold any loot we find, but we can also use them to carry food or supplies if someone wants to double up. And Jaune, if you can make any arrowheads on the way there, I have materials for fletching."

"We should try to reuse any ammunition as much as possible," Ren suggested, pulling over his bags. "If draugr have arrows on them, it would be best to grab what we can along the way. The same goes for potions. I have alchemy materials, but there were potions Jaune and you found in the dungeon as well. I made enough to help us get through the entire trip, but we can forage if need be."

Ren pulled open smaller sack filled to the brim with healing potions. There was at least three or four dozen in there. They were probably worth anywhere from a thousand to fifteen hundred lien. It was enough to supply a small army after a skirmish.

"And we only have one teleportation crystal, so we have to make it count," Ruby declared, gesturing over to Jaune who pulled it out. "So, who wants to carry it?"

Everyone turned to Sun simultaneously who looked behind himself trying to figure out the rest were staring at. He glanced back and forth between them and the courtyard behind as his mind clued in on their chosen one. The boy's experience with magicons made him the perfect candidate.

"No fucking pressure guys," Sun quipped, sighing loudly. "Fine, I'll carry it around. I'm the only one who knows how to use this kind of magic." The device was exchanged, and Sun wrapped it in some cloth before putting it away.

"If we're done, we should find a carriage," Weiss declared, grabbing her things and beginning to head into Vale. Everyone followed close behind.

[Vale]

Finding some carriages was the easy part. Jaune and the group had done this part dozens of times before. The hard part was getting someone to take you anywhere close you wanted to go. Nobody wanted to waste their time dragging a bunch of teenagers around for a pittance when they could deliver goods for thousands more lien in a single trip.

Too bad Kaedin wasn't around. Jaune hadn't seen him since the goblin quest. He was probably the best man to coerce into letting the group hitch a ride. They could guard him as he took some of his wares down to Mountain Glenn to sell. If he wasn't going to be an option, there was always another they could convince to take them.

"Let's split up and look around guys," Jaune directed, as everyone dropped their bags near a gate. He spun around and locked eyes with Ruby and Pyrrha who were getting ready to search for someone. "Do you guys want to watch the bags?"

"Sure..."

Good... Don't want someone stealing our stuff.

This place was pretty crowded right now, so they had to be careful. In the early hours of the day, traders and their workers scrambled to load everything on carriages or move goods from the various warehouses. That also meant thieves were probably going around and scouting out good marks. With all of the enchanted goods and supplies they had, the group was a prime target.

"Okay, Weiss, where do we start," Jaune asked, looking around at the dozen or so carts in front of him now.

"It doesn't matter, someone should be willing to take us," she expressed apathetically. "They're going to need protection from bandits."

The two set off, going to the closest driver they could find. Despite their attempts to convince him, the man did not wish to go anywhere south. The next five or six traders were the same. A few were outright afraid of the idea. Just mentioning it became an off-putting declaration to those men.

Weiss was becoming visibly frustrated by this point.

"Errrgghh," she growled, gnashing her teeth to restrain herself. "How is it that so many of these men are afraid of going south?! We've offered more than enough coin to make the trip worth their time!"

"They probably don't have a death wish, Weiss," Jaune pointed out. "Something's got them scared, and they don't want to risk it. Cowards usually get to survive these things."

Jaune wasn't opposed to running away from scenarios where death was more than likely. Especially if your skills were lacking and couldn't properly defend yourself. Self-preservation was the most basic instinct of them all. That made heroes like Jaune and Ruby idiots by that definition.

"Fine," Weiss spat, shaking her head in disappointment. "We should try these last few drivers before heading back to join the others."

They walked over to a man loading what appeared to be tools onto a cart. He was with a younger man in his twenties who resembled him closely. Jaune guessed the two were father and son. Not unusual since he had to help his own father with work to support the family.

As the pair stepped up to the cart, the younger man pointed the adventurers out to the older one.

"What did ye want," the older man spoke with a thick Valish accent.

"We would like to hire your carriage," Weiss pleaded, using her training to make a deal. "Our group needs to travel as far south as Mountain Glenn or if you are willing, to the Pantan Swamps. We can pay and guard your carriage along the way."

The son's face seemed to grow pale at the idea. He looked over at his father, who did not appear to be fazed before glancing back at the teens.

"U-Ummm," he stuttered in fear. "You guys haven't heard about what's happening down there?!"

"Demons," the older man interjected. "Some sort of incursion on the southern cities around Grosche. Forhelm was hit bad."

Demons?

"Yeah, no one wants to go south anymore," the son explained. "They stayed outside the kingdom, but we don't know if the roads are safe!"

"Well we have a bunch of people with us," Jaune replied, gesturing over to a few of their number. "They're pretty high level too. We also know how to kill demons."

"Really?"

"Yep, silver and salt," Jaune explained, grabbing the handle of the new and improved Ira Rubrum. "We watch your back and pay you guys to take us to Mountain Glenn. Or if you want to make more, you can take us farther south along the coast."

The father and son glanced at each other for only a moment sharing an unspoken dialogue. A moment later, the son relented and sighed loudly.

"Okay, if you want us to take you, we'll need five hundred lien upfront," he demanded confidently. "Mountain Glenn is a good market, so it would be worth our time, but we need something to ensure we make money out of this. That's as far as we're going."

Jaune looked over to Weiss, trying to find her opinion on it. All he got was a shrug, giving him no options for bargaining. Even attempting to haggle the price might lead to the traders rejecting the service outright.

"Deal," Jaune conceded, shaking the son's hand. Weiss handed over a few gold lien to cover the costs, and the other pair pocketed them. "We'll get everyone over here. I want to leave as soon as we can."

"Help load the wagon and we can leave in twenty minutes..."

Jaune gave Weiss a look, telling her to grab everyone. The boy merely sighed and dropped his gear right there. The pile of sacks weren't going to be too heavy at least.

...

"So, demons," Sun asked with a bewildered look. "How the fuck did nobody tell us?!"

Everyone had piled into the wagon as the traders began urging their horses forth. Blake took a spot next to the driver, helping him navigate while his son sat in the back with the others. They were leaving the city alongside a few dozen other caravans heading to their intended destination. The carriage was quite cramped, however. Everyone was pressed up against another due to the volume of goods in the back.

They didn't have the luxury to complain about this, unfortunately.

"It was only a day or so ago," the son explained, sitting on the backrest for the driver's seat. "The news finally reached Vale this morning, I think."

I wonder if Ozpin knows... Scratch that. He definitely knows something happened.

"That sounds right," Pyrrha stated, leaning forward to join the conversation. "News in Mistral can take a week to reach major cities. We even have dedicated messengers to do it for us, but they still have to stop at forts to rest their horses."

"Doesn't help if demons keep attacking the roads," Nora added on. "Beowolves can outrun most horses."

"What's a beowolf," the son asked.

"Think of a large wolf with elongated forearms and armoured plates," Ren described, flipping through a bestiary for an example. He found an image and presented it to the group. "They shouldn't be too difficult for one of us to kill. They're generally level fifteen to thirty for the basic variety. However, guards and traders like yourself don't stand much of a chance."

"Lucky Blakey chose the long way around," Yang expressed, leaning back on a sack of grain. The bag moulded itself around the girl's body, providing a comfortable pillow. "Haven't killed a demon myself, so I really don't know how to fight them."

"I have," Blake confessed, checking her map. "They're not too difficult if you aim for the vital organs, but they're very fast and powerful. It should only take a week to get to Pantan along the coast if can avoid any on the way there."

"We can use Jaune's bird to scout out the area too," Ruby mentioned.

As she did so, Junior landed on the outer wall of the wagon behind Blake. He had a mouse in his talons which he quickly tore apart and devoured. The son seeing this, began to appear green around the gills. Everyone else didn't seem to be fazed.

"Not used to it," Yang asked, outing his squeamishness. The boy's response was to blush and look away at the pretty girl's attention. "Don't worry, you can see a lot worse working with us. Clear out a goblin cave, and you won't ever complain about being dirty again."

"W-What do you mean," he stuttered, trying his best to hold back the contents of his stomach.

"We used their blood to cover our scent," she indulged, seeing the young man getting more sick as she described the hunt. "That shit took a week to wash out when we got done."

"That's absolutely disgusting," Weiss exclaimed in horror. Her mouth hung open as she contemplated the situation.

"That's nothing compared to what I've dealt with," Blake interjected dryly. "You want to know what disgusting is, Weiss, try falling into a goblin latrine."

"Nooooo," Yang exclaimed in bewilderment. "You're kidding?!"

"I'm not," she replied, not looking away from the map. "I fell through a hole in the ground leading to their nest, and the latrine broke my fall. Had to fight my way out and replace all of my armour when I was done."

Everyone let out their own sounds of disgust at the thought. Ruby even gagged as it was too much for her to bear. However, they had succeeded in breaking the son's will, and the boy was left-leaning over the side of the carriage spitting and coughing as he recoiled.

Yang-Blake, leave the poor boy alone!
