Chapter 12

"Regular Speech" "Thought" "Telepathy"

"I can't believe you couldn't respect my wishes for one night. I asked each and every one of you to be on your best behavior. You all have been a big disappointment to me tonight." Esther did not appreciate the actions of her two youngest. She expected the oldest to be able to control them, but she was wrong. "They just solidified my resolve. I need to correct my mistakes at once." The family all left their mother alone,, but Finn stayed to be able to keep up the appearance of loving his mother.

"Mother, you should go and rest, you have had a long night." Ether nodded her head at her son, the only one that she is a little bit proud of, the only one with virtue left to sacrifice himself for the greater good. As she retired to her room, she saw that Kol was leaving the house again. Narrowing her eyes at him through the window, she set up a location spell. Once she knew where he was, she left the house.

Esther liked the way this house looked and was trying her best on figuring out just why exactly her son came here in the middle of the night. It wasn't until she saw a little boy walking past a broken window did she understand. It was her son, alive and well after all these years. A new plan started to form in her mind. She will start over with Henrik and raise her family like how she should have so long ago. As Esther was watching from the shadows she saw a young woman entering the room to get Henrik. She couldn't make out what they were saying, but the mysterious woman led Henrik out of the room and into another one.

Esther began going back to the mansion. Clearly her children already knew of this development since they themselves followed Kol out this morning. How dare they not tell her immediately about Henrik. Esther realized that Finn was no longer on her side either. She had to make adjustments to her plans. She thanked the spirits for allowing her the foresight to go after Kol herself, or else she would've never known, they had a powerful witch on their side.

The next morning everyone was up and ready to see Henrik again. Their mother told them earlier that she wanted them home by 6 tonight for a family dinner. They had plenty of time to get to know their brother again. The five of them headed out to the old house on the outskirts of town and walked in without a care. "Nik! Nik! Can you teach me how to wield a sword? Please please please pl-" They all laughed at his enthusiasm. Niklaus kneeled down to his height and picked him up. "Of course I will. I told you I'd do whatever you asked. However we are going to need to make some wooden swords. You are too young to be carrying real ones for now." Henrik cheated and wiggled out of his embrace to greet the other with a hug as well.

"Henrik, you have to finish your breakfast first before you can start your new training." Athena said from the dining room table, eating her own breakfast.

They make it towards the clearing with some tools in hand to cut down a small tree to make the wooden swords. Athena was lucky she kept all the tools of her late father in the shed by the house. As Nik and Elijah went about cutting down some trees to make enough swords for all of them, the others started setting up the blankets under the shade of a large tree. Finn brought a history book that Athena lent to him to try and catch up on the times, Kol decided to help his two brothers out to make the process go faster, and Rebekah sat down behind Athena to teach her how to braid flowers into her hair.

Henrik was with Kol, Elijah and Klaus trying to pick up the axe to cut down the tree himself. Everyone was smiling at him and just enjoying the day together for once, after a thousand years. Each of them are finally at peace.

When the sun was starting to set the family made their way back to the house to make sure Henrik had time to set up everything for school the next day. They all sat on the couch together and watched cartoons while Rebekah had Henrik on her lap combing her fingers through his hair. He fell asleep pretty quickly after the long day of sword training.

Rebekah was more than happy to be able to put him to bed in the guest bedroom. They all agreed his room was too dangerous for him to sleep in since the window will not be able to be repaired until tomorrow. Klaus made sure to hire the best construction workers to make sure the window will be properly fixed and replaced. Only the best for his little brother.

They all knew he was going to be the most spoiled child in the world, but that's okay. They'll just kill anyone who has a problem with it.

As they returned home to the mansion at exactly 6 oclock they discovered that their mother was not there. A note was left in her place instead. Elijah picked it up and read, "I know". They all looked at each other confused, but it soon dawned on them all. She knows about Henrik. They try and rush to the door, but they discovered that their mother set up a barrier that prevented them from leaving

None of them were deterred, they kept rushing at the barrier, hoping that luck would be on their side and it would just break. After a minute of full blown panic in Kol, he knew he was the only one that could get him and his sibling out. He stepped back a felt for the anchor of the spell, and what the spell was. The necklace that Athena had given him worked wonders and he was able to unravel the twists and turns of the barrier and break it from the inside.

When they reached the Black residence the house was on fire. Kol didn't hesitate to reach out with his magic to extinguish the flames. They all rushed inside and the scene that greeted them was from Kol's nightmares. It took him too long to break the barrier his mother set up, Athena laid in a pool of her own blood on the kitchen floor. The others rushed around the house to see if they can locate Henrik or any clues where he may be. Kol couldn't take his eyes off of her. Her once beautiful snow white skin is now an ashy grey color. The stench of her blood burns his nostrils and tears threaten to fall from his eyes. He hasn't experienced such a profound loss since Henrik died so many years ago.

Rebekah sat down next to him while he held onto her cold body. Her hand rubbing his back. For once in her life, she had nothing to say. She understands the feeling of loss he is going through, but knew no amount of comforting words can help her brother. She cried silent tears for him and the loss of her new friend. The only person outside of her family that was able to look past her rude front and actually cared about her.

Elijah, Nik, and Finn stood behind them to offer silent comfort to their brother and sister. They too felt the loss of a friend. Finn had his eyes downcast the whole time, not being able to look at the dead body on the ground. He felt like a failure. He should've stayed with his mother despite her wishes for them to have a day and kept an eye on her. He failed his family yet again.

He shot his head up however when a memory resurfaced. "Kol, you both blood shared this morning, she had vampire blood in her system." The others gasp at the great news. Kol's eyes were wide with the implication his eldest brother just said. "She'll be a vampire."
