oooOOOooo
It was a Thursday afternoon when the bell of the school building rang across the hall. A moment later, the teachers excused the students as they prepared their departure from spending their time in class. The vacant hallways were filled with students. Boys and girls, excited for the rest of the day. Some would have sports or clubs after school. Others would hang out with friends. A few would go directly home, but everyone has a place to be.
And as they moved, one girl in particular stood still. She kept her spot as they came and went. Never moving her legs, though her eyes were a different story. Her sights wondered from a grandeur perspective that left the wielder in dismay. She found her life to be mundane. There was no thrill. No excitement. It was around last year when she first became a middle schooler. The things that she thought were bright and colorful, became plain to her sights. Nothing brought her lips into a smile as she began to gradually fall into an abyss. And this year, she made several friends that shared her viewpoints. But despite the camaraderie, the void remained.
Maggie Wahlgren contemplated her worth in this place on earth. An idea that shook her core when she came to the conclusion that life has no meaning. If she was to 'disappear', it wouldn't make a difference. At least, that is what she thought. That is what it has been, among many. THOUGHTS.
Re-adjusting the backpack, she resumed her walk. She had no plans today, so she figured to return home to get started on her homework. Maybe watch a scary movie, followed by posting her daily blog online. The latter helped in both expressing her feelings and relieving some tensions. Just as she let out a sigh, something caught wind of her ears. A familiar sound that piqued her curiosity. Maggie turned and saw a girl by the park. The sound that escaped that girl's lips reminded her of how she was.
Foolish. Innocent. Happy.
If she remembered correctly, the girl that stood before her was Luan. The class clown. Seriously, the girl wants to be a professional entertainer. During her introduction to the class, Luan declared that she will be a top performer. Laughing, she filled the air with fuzzy giggles. Even now, the girl was laughing for some reason. And for some reason, it got Maggie to focus on the girl. The amount of time she spent staring at the girl was more than she spent looking at her friends. The shrills of excitement managed to get her heart to beat abnormally.
Maggie paused. Placing a hand on her chest, her heart was indeed beating faster than its usual tempo. Weird, she thought.
oooOOOooo
Several weeks came and went as Maggie kept her eyes fixated on the clown girl. This time Luan was juggling bowling pins while on a unicycle. All while telling cat jokes. Maggie silently applauded the girl for her concentration.
This time for sure, she thought. She has made several attempts in the past to talk to the girl, but they were mostly idle chats that ended the moment it began. Exchanges like "Mornin'." "Good morning." "Hi." "Haaay" As far as she knew, the clown girl didn't know her existence. At least not the way she would have hoped. Maggie wanted to engage in a conversation, but she didn't know where to begin. Should she start by asking her favorite color? Maybe if she has any siblings? Her favorite TV show? It seems she has forgotten how to talk to someone new.
By the time she decided to ask about her experience working as a performer, the bell rang once more. Leaving her to drop her head onto her wooden desk in frustration.
After all that time thinking, she felt inadequate. More so than usual as her dark and gloomy day seems more dreadful. She told her friends she needed to collect herself in isolation. They nodded as they left her to herself in Royal Woods public park. The scene was calm as she wholeheartedly came to her conclusion. After taking a step back to review her inner mechanism, she realized she may have developed feelings for the comedy girl. She wasn't entirely sure why, but she found herself 'attractive' to the other girl. It was a bizarre outcome since she never pegged herself in being a lesbian. Maybe there was more to it than just liking her. So, now what?
Knowing she might be a lesbian didn't exactly help in solving her problem. She still couldn't quite talk to her, especially now that she came to suspect her 'feelings'.
"So that's pretty much where I am now..." Maggie said, ending the tale she began for about half an hour. Her eyes shifted to glance at the newcomer that took a seat beside her at the park bench. A young man a few years older than her took notice of her troubled expression and walked towards her. He approached her with a penny in hand. Something that her grandpa would do as well when she was very small. The newcomer asked if she could spare a moment with him and talk about what was eating at her. Looking at the penny, something she associated with her grandpa, she accepted the exchange. Gesturing for him to sit, the man sat down and placed the penny on her opened palm. She spoke about what plagued her for several weeks now. And as she revealed her tale, the young man listened.
He didn't seem surprised that she may be attracted to another girl. Could it be the newer generation and their more open-mindedness? Was he just accepting of most things? Either way, he was a great listener. To her, it seems that this wasn't his first time.
"Well, you definitely have a lot bottled up." He looked ahead and waited for a moment before adding on. Perhaps he was thinking of what to say in response. "I have a little sister who is in a similar situation as you are. She finds herself liking a friend of hers who is also a girl."
"Oh, really..." That surprised her a bit. Guess he may have some insights on the matter. "So did she confess to her friend?" Her eyes turned away, embarrassed that she asked that.
"Honestly, I don't know."
Maggie sighed. Maybe not everything can be resolved by one chat.
The man resumed. "But I know she is definitely a lot happier coming to terms with her feelings. For a while now, she was scared. Scared of what it may bring out if her feelings were to ever come out. How would our family react? Her friends? The girl in question? That fear began to grow, but then she came to me and cried. And I was glad she did. She came to me to talk about her 'feelings' and how she was mostly attracted to girls."
"What did you say to her?"
The guy had his head down, but then he lifted it up to match her eyes. "I said, no matter what I'll always be by her side. After all, I am her brother."
That definitely surprised the girl. It seems it was worse for his sister when compared to her personal experience.
"So... What should I do about this?" She placed a hand on her heart. "Every single time I think about her, my chest begins to tighten up and my head feels clouded."
"Nothing." He said.
"Nothing?" What did he mean by that? She thought. What would nothing accomplish?
"Do you necessarily have to do something? I think it's great you come to acknowledge those feelings of yours. But I feel it's important to understand yourself more. You did say you don't know why you like that person, right?"
"So... I should wait and understand myself more?"
The man nodded as she dived for more thoughts. Why does she like her? What makes Luan special? Why indeed. There was but a few things she knew about Luan. That meant there was plenty to learn about her. And maybe then, she could bear fruit to those feelings that reside in her chest.
oooOOOooo
Maggie returned home after spending a good portion of her afternoon with the nice young man. After their talk, he bought her 'pan dulce' from a vendor nearby. It was warm and quite appropriate for the season as she felt the instant relief. Thanking him, she asked for his name. He was indeed much help as her soul returned to its tranquil self. Only this time, she has a goal in mind. To befriend Luan and learn why she finds herself attracted to a girl like her.
"Lincoln. My name is Lincoln Loud. Nice to meet you." He presented her a smile as they parted ways. And as she left, Lincoln received a call. Seeing as he was alone at the park, he picked up the call.
"Hello Dr. Lopez."
