My soul thirsts for You; my flesh longs for You.

Playing a slow, almost depressing tune on the piano. Kagome was all alone downstairs as she hummed a melody to herself. She didn't know how to play the piano as Near did, but she could still play it. "I understand that you will one day love again. And that it's selfish of me to want to ask. If you can only live off the memory of me... so, please stay in my... past." Even as she sang in a low, almost unheard whisper, the song just sounded depressing. It held no meaning to her, or anyone who might hear it. The words were randomly strewn together to play in unison with the melody she was pulling from the piano. Her eyes stared ahead at a spot on the wall, not looking at anything but eyeing something.

"Anzhela,"

Turning around, she properly faced L as he walked towards her. Behind him was a gentleman and woman; both would be taking care of her lessons. With a charming smile, the man was blonde, chiseled facial features and blue pools that a young lady could get lost in. If she were a bit older, she too might have drowned. Though, she was sure that her eyes had already been drawn by the dynamic duo that was Matt and Mello even then, older or not. Beside them, another blonde, this one a woman with black sunglasses on that hid her eyes from the world. She was dressed in a black halter top and skintight leather pants. A dark red lip stain contrasted well with her much lighter skin tone. "This is?"

"Aiber," L held his hand out as he introduced the two, "and Wedy. They will be taking care of your growth over the next couple of years. You will be working directly with some influential partners of Aiber's and securing contracts where you can. Meanwhile, during your downtime and while you are not practicing your singing, you will work with these two on surveillance and the understanding of Social Etiquette among certain social groups. Things such as performance, persuasion, intrigue, and topic of conversation will be part of your daily lessons to help you better blend with the crowds you will be presenting yourself before." L took a moment to watch her while she took in all that he was saying. "I will say this. Your lessons will not be put on hiatus during this time. You will still be expected to keep up your marks and improve your standing in the ranks. Eleventh place is good, but you need to be fourth, at least. Watari will work as an in-between while you are not here and will see to your lessons personally."

"...I'm leaving the Wammy's?"

"You are, for now."

"Am I allowed to say goodbye to Mello, Matt, and Near?"

"If you think you must, then be quick. The location isn't as far as you might be thinking it is, but you will be staying there so as not to be distracted by Mello and Matt." When her head dropped, he crouched down so that he was at eye-level with her. "This is not a punishment, Anzhela. I know it seems like I'm being cruel, but I think, in hindsight, you will come to be thankful for the trades you are about to learn. They are the best in their field... and I trust them with my life. No harm will come to you, but I insist that you go into this, fully prepared to make sacrifices for Matt, Mello, and Near. They are my successors, and you are to be their protector. Like Watari is to me, you will be to them."

She looked carefully into L's eyes. L cared so much for all the children in the orphanage. However, Mello, Near, and Matt had a special place in his heart. He was so very protective of them. They were to not only succeed him someday, but they would be responsible for upholding their own laws of justice when the time came. For that, he needed to set the cards in their favor, and that was where Kagome came in. "I... don't need to say goodbye. I'll be back, after all. L..." she caught his eyes, the small smile on his lips. He reminded her of an owl sometimes. Knowledgeable, innocent, pure.

"Anzhela?"

"I, I don't want to let you down. I don't want to disappoint you." Her eyes dropped. When she found herself being pulled into a hug, L shifted into a sitting position on the floor where Kagome was pulled into his lap and held close. Her head nestled on his chest, his arms protectively shielding her from her fears.

"I didn't peg you as someone with Atychiphobia. The irrational fear of failure, ah, or perhaps it's simply anxiety? Whatever the case, so long as you strive to succeed, I won't let you fail. You can only disappoint me if you don't try." Standing, he carried Kagome to the door where Watari stood with a semi-heavy gray duffle jacket in hand. Placing Kagome down, L ran his hand along her arm and to her hand, where he held it gently in his, "you won't let me down. I trust in your resolve to take care of Mello, Matt, and Near. It's unshakable. You know it, and I know it." Letting go of her hand, Kagome let Watari help her into the jacket before Aiber held a hand out to her.

Looking up at the kind smile, she took his hand in hers and gave L one final look before smiling. Aiber and Wedy led her outside to a black four-door vehicle.

"Anzhela?"

Looking up at Wedy, who spoke for the first time, Kagome watched a gentle smile appear.

"You are scared, don't be. All things considering, I think you will enjoy the next three to five years. During this time, you may call me mom."

'Mom...' she glanced up to Aiber as he opened the door for Kagome, "does that make you dad?"

"You catch on quick."

'So in this mock family, I will play the role of their prodigal adopted daughter while maintaining my grades and learning to be the next Watari for Near, Mello, and Matt. Sure, sounds easy enough.'

"Let's get acquainted, shall we?"

Near was staring outside as the car Kagome was helped into drove off. Behind him, Mello and Matt watched him. The two took in his shoulders as they dropped as Kagome disappeared. It wasn't like he was close to her. It was just, now that she was gone, wouldn't things go back to the way they were? Bringing his hand up, he twirled a lock of his hair thoughtfully. "Are Mello and Matt not upset to see their friend leave?"

"Near, she'll be back." Mello leaned on the door of Near's room. He'd only come in here because Matt wanted to check in on the albino. Dragged is a more accurate description of what had taken place. "Matt and I knew she was going to leave soon. This isn't exactly a surprise to us."

"Right... then will Mello go back to bullying me?"

Matt looked at Mello, kind of curious about the same thing.

Eyes narrowing on Near, Mello crossed his arms over his chest and smirked, "guess we'll just have to wait and see." Mello watched Near blink in wonderment at his statement before he fidgeted and turned his attention back out the window. Of course, Mello knew he had no intention of breaking his word to Kagome. She wanted them to get along, and he had every intention of putting forth the effort to work together with Near while Kagome worked hard in her own training. Catching Matt's eyes, he conveyed to his friend as much before pushing off the door and leaving with Matt.

"You really shouldn't tease him like that."

"I can't change everything about me, Matt. Just be thankful I'm not pushing him up against the wall and threatening him with a good beating like I used to. I'm going to the library for a few hours, coming?" He stopped at the stairs and looked to see Matt smiling, "right, why did I even ask. I'll see you later."

Mello wondered if any of this would matter. Imagining where he'd be years from now, he sighed. 'It had better not be for nothing.'
