HI YES HERE WE GO AGAIN MANS IS BACK
It's been a bit, I know. I'm trying to get back into a more frequent schedule but I just moved, so its all kinda weird right now. But! Yeah we're just gonna pick up where we left off.
Side note: I've been getting into the "Two Earths" series by Stand with Ward and Queen (a great series, i recommend reading it) and it gave me a new, and i believe better, perspective on Barry's place in Civil War. You'll see what I mean later.
Also I'm referring to Bucky as James in this. Don't worry, I'll call him Bucky later on. James is for when he doesn't know who he is, The Winter Soldier is for...well it should be obvious, and Bucky is for when he's actually Bucky.
Steve enters the apartment that his old friend was supposedly staying in. Above him, Sam and Allegra crouch on the rooftop, looking out for any trouble while Cisco stands a few feet back, surveying the area and keeping watch on the pair's flank. Steve looks around the apartment in muted wonder, his heart going out to his old friend who was forced into this whole ordeal against his will.
Sam notices movement out of the corner of his eye and lifts his hand to his ear. "Heads up, Cap," he says quietly, Allegra looking over at him. "German Special Forces approaching from the south."
"Understood," Steve replies. He turns around, only to stop as his old friend, seemingly appearing out of nowhere, stares right back at him. Steve quickly looks him up and down before meeting his eyes cautiously. "You know me?"
"You're Steve," James replies, his throat dry. "I read about you in a museum."
"They've set a perimeter."
Steve sighs in slight disappointment. "I know you're nervous, and you have plenty of reason to be," he says, moving towards the other. "But you're lying."
"I wasn't in Vienna," James says, shaking his head slightly. "I don't do that anymore."
"Frak, Cap, they're going inside!"
"Well the people who think you did are coming here, now. And they're not planning on taking you alive."
"That's smart. Good strategy," James replies solemnly. The pair look up as they hear loud footsteps above them.
"They're on the roof, Steve, we're stuck."
"This doesn't have to end in a fight, Buck."
The latter simply sighs in resignation. "It always ends in a fight."
"Five seconds!"
"You pulled me from the river. Why?"
James pulled off his glove to reveal a metal hand. "I don't know."
"Three seconds!"
"Yes you do."
"Breach, breach!"
As Sam calls out, a grenade is thrown in through the window, causing the pair to quickly look over. The grenade's explosion is caught by Steve's shield as the Special Forces begin to ram their way in.
As the duo begin to fight off the authorities, Allegra perches worriedly on the rooftop. "Shouldn't we be helping them?" she asks as James' bag flies out of the window.
"Trust me, kid, they don't need any help," Sam chuckles.
"You sure about that?" Cisco calls, the trio hearing the immense amounts of gunfire, grunting, and crashing coming from within the building. "Looks a bit intense in there right now."
"Look, Cap can handle himself, and I'm pretty sure his old war buddy can, too," Sam replies. "We're here for backup in case someoneā¦" Sam trails off as he sees a black figure in the distance running towards the commotion. "Cap?" he says into his earpiece. "We've got company."
Hearing nothing but static, he grunts and turns to Allegra. "We've got a new problem."
"What?"
He points. "That."
As he points, the man pounces onto James, only missing by a few inches as the latter quickly rolls out of the way. The two begin to duel as Sam, Allegra, and Cisco start to approach the scene. James quickly ends up on his back, fighting for his life as the man tries to dig his claws into his skin.
Steve, leaning over the railing of the building, notices the fight below him. "Sam, southwest rooftop," he calls.
"I know, who the hell's the other guy?" Sam replies.
"We're about to find out."
"Alright, eyes here, gang," Tony says, gathering the remaining Avengers. "German Special Forces just picked up a rather interesting lead," he begins, activating his holo-screen to show body cam footage from one of the officers. "Barnes and Rogers are doing God knows what, and one can only assume that Rogers isn't alone, oh wait, he isn't," Tony continues, lacing his voice with sarcasm. "Picked this up too; Rogers has Wilson, Ramon, and Garcia as backup."
"How do you know this?" Nash asks tensely.
"German Special Forces, was I unclear?" Tony replies, raising his eyebrow.
"How you wanna take this?" Nat asks Tony as he sighs deeply.
"I would like to take the calm route. Talk 'em down, hopefully talk some sense into 'em. But, as luck would have it, Ross is gonna declare them war criminals." Tony grimaces and looks around the room. "We're gonna have to bring 'em in."
"Bring them in?" Barry echoes in question.
"Arrest them," Tony clarifies. "Well, not really. Kind of a house arrest sort of deal. They'll get an office. No chains. No cells. Not a bad deal, really."
"So you're saying, what, we're law enforcement now?" Caitlin asks.
Tony blinks. "Honestly, up until this moment I completely forgot you existed." Caitlin bristles but Tony continues. "As much as I don't like it, we have to abide by the law. Cap and crew are breaking the law in broad daylight, and seeing as they just ran through a whole squad of German cops, I don't think we have much of a choice here."
"I'll go," Rhodey volunteers.
"I'll come with," Vision adds.
"No," Tony shakes his head. "Vision, you need to stay in the compound, keep Wanda safe."
"She can keep herself safe, Mr. Stark," Vision replies.
"Not from herself, she can't," Tony answers bluntly.
Nat looks at him incredulously. "That's a bit rude, don't you think?"
"Do you want an apology?"
"Yeah, it would be nice."
"Well, the line already formed, grab a ticket and wait your turn."
"Guys, guys," Rhodey interrupts. "Come on, let's focus here. I'll go and bring Cap and the rest in. Barry, you're with me."
"Wait, what?" Barry asks. "Why me?"
"You know your friends the best," Rhodey answers simply. "If I know Cap, he's not going to fight us if civilians could get hurt. Your friends don't seem the antagonistic type. Our only worries here are Barnes and the new guy."
"Alright," Barry nods. "So what's the plan, I get the people out of there so you can lock down Cap?"
"What? No," Rhodey replies incredulously. "You're going after your friends, I'm going after mine."
"But what about the civilians?"
"Look, kid, we have our priorities."
"But shouldn't-"
"They'll be fine!" Rhodey says loudly in irritation. "If someone's in danger, get 'em out. But right now, we need to make sure that Cap and his friends don't hurt anything or anyone else. Or did you forget that an infamous serial killer is literally part of Cap's crew?"
Barry backs up. "We're heroes. Our priority should be keeping people safe. Nothing should come in the way of that."
"And we are, or we will be," Rhodey replies slowly. "We get Cap out of there, we save a lot more people a lot quicker."
Barry stares at him, doubt filling his eyes. He sighs and nods his head. "Alright, fine. Where are we going?"
A blast ruptures a piece of the tunnel as James drives through on his stolen motorcycle. Before the structure can collapse, the man dives through an opening, slashing Jame's tires. Behind him, Steve jumps out of his car through the rubble and tackles the man before he can attack James. Sam stops, unable to make it out in time.
Steve, James, and the third man make it to their feet, the man quickly lunging at James. James, caught unaware, trips backwards, but Steve rams his shield into the man's side. The man leaps up to his feet as Steve attacks with his shield, the man managing to quickly roll out of the way and catch Steve in a chokehold (Cap's signature move!). Steve drops the shield, his hands shooting up to the man's arms in an attempt to loosen the hold, but he only makes it tighter. Steve begins to fight for breath, but the hold is suddenly gone as James crashes his elbow into the man's head.
The man stumbles back, momentarily dazed as James attacks again, jumping up and slamming his metal arm into the man's face. The man falls flat on his back, but as James goes to kick him, he grabs his leg and pulls, crashing his head into the street. James reels as Steve, finally on his feet, goes to grab his shield, only to catch a foot to the side of the head. He falls backwards, managing to grab the shield just in time, blocking an attack from the man. The man kicks the shield hard, shoving Steve back, and rakes at his face, cutting into Steve's cheek.
Steve grimaces but shoves his shield back towards his assailant, causing him to stumble back. The man rolls back into a fighting stance, but is quickly thrown back by two energy blasts, one blue and one violet, as Cisco and Allegra drop walk out from behind the debris, Sam in tow. "Stay down, Cat-man-du," Cisco says, only for Allegra and Sam to look at him incredulously. "Not my best one, just, gimme a sec," he sighs, embarrassed.
The man growls and gets to his feet, surrounded. He notices James behind Steve and lunges at Cisco and Allegra, only to jump as their powers shoot toward where he once stood, hitting Steve full-force. Steve flies back. Allegra stops in shock, but is sent backwards along with Cisco as the man dives into both of them upon landing. Sam attempts to punch the man, but is quickly blocked and sent back as well, the man turning only to catch a metal arm with his face. James pounces on the man, slamming his metal fist down at his face, only to miss as the man leans to the side, throwing James off balance.
The two get to their feet, only to be interrupted by a flash of lightning. "Stand down, all of you," Barry says as German police begin to pour onto the scene.
"Barry, man," Cisco sighs and walks to his friend in relief, only to be stopped by another voice.
"Nobody move," Rhodey says with authority, landing and pointing his weapons at each of the assailants. One of the policemen shouts as the entire force trains their weapons on the group. Cap nods subtly to the rest and puts his shield on his back, raising his hands in surrender. Sam, James, Allegra, and Cisco follow suit, Cisco looking at Barry in betrayal. "Congratulations, Cap," Rhodey says, his voice dripping with snark and sarcasm. "You're a criminal.
As the group is cuffed, the man raises his hands in surrender, retracting his claws. As Steve looks on, his hands continue to his helmet, which he slowly takes off to reveal the calm, steady gaze of T'challa, the king of Wakanda. Steve's eyes widen in shock and Rhodey tilts his head in confusion. "Your Highness," the latter acknowledges as the king looks over at him. T'challa's eyes drop down, noting James restrained on the floor, the flick up to meet Steve's, a regal gaze meeting a quiet glare.
