"Two more hours to go" Santana muttered as she stared at the clock. "I wonder what Brett is up too?" Santana looked out the window and watched the snow falling onto New York Street. Santana was doing her residency at NYU teaching hospital.
"Dr Lopez? Can you check the children's ward?" One of the nurses asked as Santana nodded.
"Right away!" Santana walked to the children's ward as she saw all children who would be spending Christmas in the hospital which sucked.
"Hi sanny!" Santana grinned when she saw Via waving at her cheerfully. Via was visiting her friend, Annie who was admitted to the hospital due to having tonsillitis. Annie loves the fact that she can have ice cream that Santana sneaks in for her as medicine to help soothe her throat.
"Hi Via, Hi Annie! How's your throat?" Santana asked in a professional and friendly manner. Annie smiled and nodded
"Im okay Dr Lopez, My throat is getting better!" Annie smiled as Santana grinned before updating her records.
"Looks like ice cream is doing its job" Santana smiled as the two girls giggled "what you two up two?" She asked as she looked down seeing a chessboard.
"Playing Chess!" Annie said excitedly as Santana sighed and rolled her eyes. Annie and Via were too smart for their own good. Santana doesn't even know how to play chess, she has a hard time understanding the game. Brett and Via can take hours playing one single game of chess. Brett always wins but Via was getting closer and closer in winning against him.
"Santana?" The matron came "your shift is finished dear, you can go home now!" The elderly woman smiled as Santana said thank you.
"Via stay here okay? I'll just go grab my bag" Santana told Via who nodded before she quickly went to the staff room and grabbed her stuff.
When she got her stuff, she came back and saw Brett with Ryan talking to Via and Annie. "Hey honey, how was work?!" Brett wrapped his arm around her and kissed her forehead making Santana smile.
"Tiring, I could get a massage to help me" Santana said teasingly as Brett just smiled and nodded.
"Just have to ask honey" Brett kissed her forehead.
"That's it Santana make sure he knows who is in charge" Ryan teased "Brett was a bit if a pushover especially to girls" Brett shrugged as everyone giggled
"Anyway I'm here to pick up Via and San" Brett picked up Via in his arms then stared at the chessboard "wow Annie you're keeping up well with Via usually she is ruthless" Brett patted Annie on her head making her giggle.
"Only against you Maggie!" Via stuck her tongue out as Brett rolled his eyes.
"Are you getting lessons from Erika?" Brett teased causing Via to frown
"I will beat you! You are going down!" Via playfully jumped on Brett's back as Brett played along.
"Arhh I got a koala on my back" Brett tried to reach his back and tried to tickle Via but she clung like a koala bear. Everyone laughed at the two and couldn't believe how cute they were.
"So Via whats for the menu?" Santana tickles Via who clung onto her brother tighter who gasped for air.
"Ah!" Brett wheezed out
"Ohh I want to do Via's amazing Spaghetti and meatballs!" Via shouted excitedly as everyone laughed. Via started learning about Italian cuisine and Brett was supervising Via to make sure she doesn't hurt herself but she was usually careful.
"Hmm..sounds good honey!" Santana encourages aa Brett smiled then turned to Annie.
"I'll get Santana to bring you some tomorrow!" Brett commented as Annie gasped and nodded happily.
"Right guys home time, I dunno about you but I am tired!" Santana gasped out dramatically as Via waved to Annie and Ryan.
"Bye guys!" Everyone said their goodbyes as Brett continued to carry Via on his back while waiting for Santana to get her stuff.
"Are we walking home?" Santana asked as Brett nodded
"Our flat is only 10-minute walk San, stop being lazy!" Brett playfully nudged her girlfriend who glared at him.
"My feet ache from all the walking In the ward!" Santana said defensively.
"I would offer to carry you but I have a koala on my back" Brett pointed to Via who giggled as Santana laughed "but when we get home I will give you a massage"
"Full body?!" Santana said excitedly as Brett nodded making Santana cheer.
When they got home, Brett helped Via make their dinner while Santana was finishing off her paperwork for university. "Smells delicious!" Santana commented as she walked to the table to see Brett and Via setting the table.
"Thank you Sanny!" Via said cutely as Brett helped Santana and Via to their chairs before he sat in front of them.
"Let's dig in!" Brett smiled as everyone started eating "my god Via, you should think about being a professional chef!" Brett praised Via who blushed.
That night, Brett and Santana were sitting in the bath just relaxing. Santana was sitting between Brett's legs and her back against his chest. "Do you feel better?" Brett asked as Santana hummed.
"After that body massage now this bath, I feel like I can take on the whole hospital!" Santana said triumphantly as Brett laughed before hugging her closer to him. "What do you think Brett?" Santana called out "Brett?"
"Huh?" Brett looked down and said "sorry miles away" he apologized as he kissed her temple.
"Are you okay?" Santana asked worriedly as Brett nodded
"Sorry, just worried tomorrow is my first time teaching a class," Brett said sheepishly as Santana smiled before kissing his cheek.
"Honey it's a great achievement for you and Erika for opening a dance school, after Terry fixed everything, you guys had thousands of applications for kids and adults that wanted to be taught by you and Erika" Santana encouraged him as Brett smiled sadly.
"I just wish Mum was there to see it" Santana touched the tattoo on his chest before saying
"Your mum is proud of you and Via of how great you two are turning out!" Santana made Brett look at her. "She is with you every day" Brett smiled then frowned playfully.
"Hopefully not every second, I don't really want her seeing what me and you do every night" Brett joked as Santana playfully slapped him on the chest.
"Come on, gonna be a prune if we stay longer" Santana got up as Brett held her hand making sure she didn't slip. Brett got up before kissing her on top of the head before drying off.
"Love so much baby" Brett hugged her before the two went to bed.
The next morning, Brett woke up early then turned to Santana who was happily snoring away. He leaned over and gave her a kiss on the forehead before he started getting ready for work. Brett opted for his tight white shirt, his slim leg Nike jogging pants, his white and blue hightops. Brett picked up his NY black baseball cap and placed it on his head.
Brett gave his baby sister a kiss on the forehead before leaving to go to the dance studio. Santana and Via were off today due to it being a Saturday. the two could hibernate if they wanted to.
"Morning Brett! You ready!" Erika smiled in front of the dance studio as Brett took a deep breath as they opened the building and started getting ready.
Few hours later
Brett was in his office having his lunch while Erika was teaching Ballet. "Maggie?" Someone knocked causing Brett to smile to see Santana and Via walk into his office.
"Oh hey, guys!" Brett said excitedly as he walked over to them giving them a kiss on the cheeks. "What brings you guys here?" He asked
"Just wanted to visit, me and Via started a bit of our Christmas shopping. Brett looked at the shopping bags in Santana's arms making him sigh and shake his head.
"By any chance are any of them mine or Via?" Brett teased as he noticed some of the bags were her favorite brands.
"Of course that tiny little bag is yours and the rest is mine and Via's" Santana teased as Brett rolled his eyes then Erika came into the room with Fern who was helping out.
"Hey San, Via!" The two greeted as they all hugged each other as Brett smiled.
"How is the class going?" Santana asked as they sat down at the small sofa in Brett's office while Brett was doing paperwork letting the girls talk.
"Good but Brett's class which was Hip-hop, freestyle, street, and waltz are the most popular" Erika playfully nudged Brett who laughed
"Sure getting hit on by elderly ladies is clearly what I want" Brett commented sarcastically as he was shuffled through the papers.
"Oh Mrs. Harpin, she is like 70 she was literally staring at Brett's ass throughout one of the waltz lessons with me" All the girls giggled as Brett rolled his eyes.
"Sure sure, when a guy stares at a girl it's stalking but when girls do it, it's funny" Brett playfully mutters as the girls rolled their eyes.
"As long as you only stare at me honey" Santana playfully pinches Brett's bearded cheek. "You will be a good boy"
"I am always a good boy" Brett muttered as he took a bite out of his sandwich then Via ran over and took a bite as well.
"Santana, do you feed these two?" Fern teased as Santana rolled her eyes and replied
"These two are like bottomless pits" Santana giggled as Brett and Via just looked at each other and smiled before looking at Santana.
"But you love us" the two did the famous Pierce puppy Pout which made Santana groan and reply
"Yes I do" the Latina rolled her eyes playfully.
BEEP! BEEP!
Santana groaned as she reached for her pager. "I will throw this out the window soon," she said angrily as Brett rolled his eyes before giving the rest of the sandwich to Via.
"San you wanted to be a doctor, go on, leave your bags here and Via can stay here" Brett commented as Santana apologized and kissed Via on the cheek.
"Okay I'll see you guys at home," Santana said, picking up her bag and running out the door.
"Via want to join the Kids class?" Erika asked as Via nodded excitedly while Brett continued with the paperwork.
It was at 2 am in the morning when Santana came back. She walked into hers and Brett's bedroom then saw siblings asleep on the bed. Santana quickly took a shower before changing into her pj's before heading to bed. She was surprised to see Brett walking sleepily back before laying down on the bed. Santana followed him and cuddled up to him. "How was work?" Brett asked sleepily as Santana cuddled into his chest further.
"Tiring sorry about needing to go," Santana said apologetically as Brett smiled before kissing her forehead and whispering
"You are worth a wait" Brett watched Santana just cuddle Via and fall asleep quickly. Brett just smiled at the two and watched them for a bit before going to sleep.
After a few hours
ZZZZZ….ZZZZ…..ZZZZZ
Brett woke up to the sound of his phone buzzing causing him to look at the time, it was only 6 am. He looked at the number and saw it wasn't a recognized number. Brett answered the phone "Hello?" he said sleepily as he tried to push back a yawn but it was useless.
"Hi sorry for calling you out of the blue but can you please do me a massive favor?" Brett blinked as he recognized the voice on the other side.
"Dad? Erm sure if I can" Brett said unsurely as he heard his father on the other line walking around.
"My wife needs to go to a hospital for an operation tomorrow, we are flying out to New York tonight and I was wondering if you could babysit my son, please I am desperate" he begged as Brett looked at Santana who was awake and watching him. "It will only be for a night I promise"
Brett sighed as he nodded "okay sure, do you need to be picked up from the airport?" Brett offered
"No, we are flying tonight and the second we land, I am dropping off my wife at the hospital and dropping my son at your apartment if that is okay?" he asked worriedly as Brett sighed and nodded. "Thank you again" the call ended as Brett just kept staring at his phone screen.
"Brett honey are you okay?" Santana whispered worriedly to Brett who sat on the bed and stroked her hair gently.
"Yeah that was just my dad asking me to look after his son while his wife needs to go into surgery, they are flying to New York as we speak" Brett explained as Santana bit her lip and nodded.
"Are you going to be okay with that?" she asked softly as Brett nodded
"I can look after a 2-year-old no problem, my issue is, can Via get along with our half-brother" the two of them looked down at Via who was sleeping peacefully. Via came to terms with the notion that their father will never come back as a family member. Walter was just a father to her but in her mind, it was Brett, Santana, and Jenna that have raised her. She saw Walter with Brett in a cafe but he let Via do all the talking as he knew she had so many questions to ask. Via was asking if he ever loved her or if he ever even wanted her in the first place.
Walter had explained that Via was unplanned and the family was struggling to get by. Walter said no he never wanted her in the first place and never loved her like a father should love their child when she was born. Brett held Via's hand throughout the whole thing but Via was being a brave girl, she just nodded and asked a few more questions.
Why did you hurt Brett and Mama?
"I hurt your brother and your mother was because i was angry that I lost my job and my life was not turning the way I wanted to, I turned to things like alcohol and drugs to help take the stress away but it caused me to change more into a monster"
Why did you respond to my letter when Brett got hurt?
"The reason I replied to the letter you sent me was that I wanted to see if you, your brother, and mother were doing okay even after everything I put you all through. I could see that Brett had turned into a man that I wanted to be and when I saw you, the fear in your eyes after seeing me just for a second made me realize that I was not the person you deserved to call a father and how could I ever hurt someone like you before you came into the world and how I didn't want you hurt me so much"
Was I not good enough to love? (This broke Brett's heart the most but he just kept giving her sister the moral support she needed as she wanted the truth even how brutal it is).
"You and your brother deserve all the love in the world, you are a strong little girl Via just like your Mama which made me fall for her in the first place. She would always stand her ground and brace anything that comes to her then somehow turns it into a positive. The fact that you at a certain age already knew how awful the world could be and still be able to stay positive and happy is something not many people can do. I could feel my heart becoming warm seeing you for the first time, I love you sweetheart. When I went back to prison, I kept thinking of what my life would have been like if I had stayed off the drugs and alcohol and stayed to look after our family. I think it would have been perfect"
In the end, Via just hugged Walter which made the man cry as he hugged her back. Via forgave her father but said "you are my father but you didn't raise me, Mommy and Brett did. I have a happy family now with Brett, Sanny, and my grandparents but I still want to keep in contact with you because you are still my father" Walter wiped his tears and nodded.
"You got it kiddo, you and your brother can message me anytime, and if you want to visit just ask" Walter nodded as he shook Brett's hand before saying goodbye. After Walter left, Brett kneeled down next to Via who then buried her face into Brett's chest and cried.
"Via can do it, you and Via are on good terms with Walter now, your mother would be proud of you two" Santana kissed him on the cheek. "Come on let's make breakfast" Brett pushed Santana back on the bed and replied
"Honey got some sleep, it's only 6 am" Brett covered her up with Via. "It's your day off relax" Brett kissed her forehead as he watched Santana cuddle Via and sank back to sleep.
Brett got up and opened his laptop before doing some lesson plans for his classes. Brett doesn't know it had been three hours when he felt a kiss on his cheek and saw Santana smiling with coffee in one hand, the other had a hot chocolate. "Morning!" Santana said happily as Brett closed his laptop as Santana placed the mug on next to him. "Lesson Plan?" Santana raised an eyebrow at him.
"Yeah something to distract me," Brett said as Santana sat on his lap and kissed his cheek.
"Honey, you okay?" Brett nodded and Via came out rubbing her eyes tiredly. "Hey Ducky!" Santana greeted as Via gave a sleepy smile. "Hot chocolate?" Via nodded as Santana got off Brett's lap and went to the kitchen.
"Via are you okay for us to babysit Oscar just for today?" Brett asked Via who thought for a moment and nodded
"Yeah I just hope he likes me," Via asked worriedly as Brett rolled his eyes and replied
"Honey, you are more likable than me" Brett joked as Via giggled "Are you sure you are okay with it?" Via smiled and nodded. "That's my brave girl" Brett kissed her forehead.
It was around 10 am when there was a knock on the door. Brett opened it and saw it was Walter who gave him an apologetic smile and in his arms who was Oscar who was an exact copy of their father but he was very shy. "Thank you again, Brett," Walter said gratefully as Brett smiled and nodded before kneeling down in front of Oscar.
"Hey bud, I'm Brett nice to meet you" Brett grinned as Oscar nodded shyly then shook his hand.
"Oscar nice to meet you," he said shyly then Via came up next to Brett.
"Hi I'm Via!" she said happily "Do you like to watch Disney?" she asked curiously then Oscar's face lit up.
"Mickey Mouse!" Via grabbed Oscar's hand and dragged him to the living room where the large tv was.
"Looks like they will get along okay," Brett said as Walter smiled then looked at his son with admiration.
"You both turned out great" Walter said softly as he glanced over to his son "I hope that Oscar will grow up like you," he said before staring at his watch. "I need to go, are you sure he is okay about staying here?" Brett nodded and waved goodbye to his father.
"Brett?" Santana called out as Brett nodded before kissing her softly. "What was that for?" she asked curiously as her fiance just smiled and replied
"Just because" Brett shrugged as he gave her a tight hug. "Oi you two what would you like for lunch today?!" he asked the kids who looked at each other and shrugged. "How about we make our own pizza?" Brett suggested as the two kids nodded. "Awesome"
At lunchtime, the four of them were playing with their pizza dough making weird shapes and faces before putting the sauce and the toppings they want. Via went for a simple chicken and mushroom pizza, Oscar with the help of Brett just had cheese and ham whilst Santana and Brett were sharing pizza had everything on the pizza. Santana looked at Brett and the two kids before daydreaming of them having a family with similar fun nights like this. After lunch, Oscar and Via were so full that they were both in a food coma which leads to them falling asleep on the couch. "And Knockout!" Santana whispered to Brett as they were cleaning up.
"I know right lol, oh to be a kid and have a carefree life" Brett sighed as Santana rolled her eyes and whispered in his ear.
"Yeah but adults can have fun too" she nibbled on his ear making Brett laugh softly before flicking water at her. "Ahh!" she screamed in surprise before flicking some water back at him.
That night, Brett cooked the dinner for everyone tonight as Via was having fun playing with Oscar. The kids were watching a Disney Film with Santana and Brett who were all asleep on the sofa. Brett opened his eyes and checked the time, it read 2:30 then put the kids to bed before lifting Santana and tucking her in. He couldn't get to sleep so he just laid in bed looking through his phone and scrolling through the internet.
*knock, knock*
Brett stopped and looked at the bedroom before pulling a confused face before carefully detaching Santana off him. Brett opened the door to see Oscar looking scared, he knelt down so he was eye level with him "Are you okay bud?" Brett asked worriedly as Oscar shifted his weight on his feet.
"Toilet" he said quickly as Brett nodded then led him to the bathroom and opened the door for him.
"Are you okay to go by yourself?" Brett asked as Oscar nodded, Brett turned around and let him have his privacy.
"Done!" he said as Brett flushed the toilet and helped him wash his hands.
"Come on let's go back to sleep bud huh?" Brett lifted him in his arms and carried him to Via's bedroom. Brett laid him on the air bed "Do you want me to stay with you till you fall asleep?" Brett asked Oscar nodded as he laid next to him stroking his back softly to help him which lulled him back to sleep.
Brett waited till Oscar was in deep sleep before checking his watch to see it was 5 am. He sneaked out to the living room and started doing some exercise to try and kill some time.
"Now that is a nice view to see in the morning!" Santana said as her hungry brown eyes staring at Brett who was sweaty and half-naked in the living room.
"Morning!" Brett smiled as he checked the time, it was 7:30 am and Santana was dressed in her hospital smock ready for work. "Do you need me to take you to work?" Brett asked as Santana shook her head as she started making a cup of coffee.
"Its okay besides you have the two rugrats asleep" Santana giggled as she poured the coffee into her travel mug. "I will text you when I am at work" she walked over to him and kissed him on the cheek before leaving. "Love you!" she said as she started putting her shoes on.
"Love you too!" Santana left as Brett took a shower before starting making pancakes for the kids.
Brett looked out the window and smiled at the beautiful day outside. "Mum me and Via are happy but still missing you, we will keep going in honor of you and hope that you watch over us" Brett whispered then he felt a light touch on his cheek as if something just gave him a kiss on a cheek which made Brett smile brightly. "I love you mum".
