It felt as if the whole party came to a screeching halt. Everyone fell silent and stared at me, waiting for my reaction. My eyes were stuck on the sand. I didn't know how to process this at the moment. I was paralyzed replaying last time vampires came to Forks and even worse, now they threatened my Julius. He couldn't defend himself. This wasn't fair.
"Milly, we won't let anything happen to you," I felt Jacob hands on my shoulder. That snapped me back into reality.
"How about Julius? Fuck me. I don't want anything happening to him... nor you..." I shook my head no and put my hands to my head. I couldn't help it. I remembered last time how Jacob almost died protecting me. I had an intense pain in my chest and my eyes watered up. Tears flowed from my eyes without permission. Jacob quickly wrapped my in his arms and patted my head.
"Shhh. Nothing will happen to Julius... or me. I was built for this. You're the one most in danger."
I held my breath to try and control my emotions.
"I'm sorry guys. I didn't mean to make you guys uncomfortable," I said pulling away from Jacob and turning to everyone else. They were standing around me not knowing what to do.
"Not at all Milly. You have the right to cry," Leah defended me. Seth came to me with a tissue and I blew into it unattractive like.
"Ugh," I groaned as I got stuffy from crying.
"Dad, why don't you tell a legend? Milly asked for it earlier," Jacob asked his dad.
"Oh! I'll start the bonfire! And we can make s'mores," Quil said excitedly.
"Of course," Billy said looking at me sadly.
"I didn't mean to give you bad news on your birthday," Billy said.
"It's fine. It is what it is. I didn't mean to react like that. I'm just shaken," I said.
I watched Quil and Embry get the bonfire started. Jared and Kim were bringing the stuff to make the s'mores. Everyone else got comfortable around the fire.
As Billy started telling another legend about the Quileute people, my mind drifted to that day on the mountains. I remembered being frozen with fear as Tobias came closer and closer to me and feeling like my only escape was through death. My body started shaking.
"Are you okay?" Jacob whispered in my ear. I shook my head no. He grabbed my hand and squeezed it tight. I hated how that was able to soothe me, but I didn't let go. I squeezed back trying to give him all my fears.
My marshmallow started turning a brownish color. I let go Jacob's hand to build my s'more and shoved it in my mouth. Billy finished the story and looked at us.
"So which one of you made me a s'more?" He asked. Jacob started laughing.
"Oh, I got you Billy," Sue said handing him a plate of s'mores.
"Thanks Sue. I might be old, but I still like s'mores," he smiled.
Everyone broke out in conversation as they kept roasting marshmallows and making s'mores. I didn't make any conversation. I stood still watching the fire burn.
"Milly, it's time to open presents," Emily shouted. That's broke me out of my trance.
"You guys didn't have to get me presents," I sighed. I got up and made my way towards the tent that Emily was under.
"Open mines first. I made it last minute, so I really hope you like it," Emily smiled at me while giving me a wrapped box. I opened it quickly curious to see what she made me.
"Emily! I freaking love this! You must have worked all night making this!" I shouted at her. I pulled out from the box a crochet light pink and black hoodie with a matching scarf.
"I'm so glad you liked it. It makes staying up all night worth it," Emily blushed lightly. Sam was behind her rubbing her back and smiling proudly at his woman.
I instantly put it on. "I don't think I'll ever take these off."
"We made you this birthday card. Sorry, we couldn't afford anything or be talented enough to make you something," Quil said giving me a birthday card. I gladly opened it and read it.
"Happy Birthday to our favorite Short stuff. We are glad you moved back to the reserve," I read out loud. "Signed by Quil, Embry, and Seth," I smiled. There was also doodles all over the card that involved hearts, three little wolves, and a small girl.
"I love this card, thank you!" I smiled and held the card close to my heart.
"Our turn," Kim said shyly. She handed me a small square bag. I opened the small back and pulled out a thick leather notebook with a pen.
"Oh wow," I said taking out the notebook and testing the pen.
"I love inky pens... This is amazing guys," I said while putting the notebook back in the bag.
"I can tell you guys put so much thought on what to give me and I absolutely loved each gift," I said. I felt my eyes water and my voice almost gave away as I spoke.
"Why are you crying?" Embry frowned.
"I just... this... this was the best birthday ever," I croaked while tears fell from my eyes.
Emily instantly pulled me in a hug.
"I don't mean to get emotional," I cried. This really was one of the most thoughtful thing I have ever experienced.
"Hey Jacob, you haven't given her your gift yet," Billy said.
"I'll give it to her later," Jacob replied.
"What is it?" Seth asked.
"If I told you then it wouldn't be a surprise for her," Jacob said.
"It better not be sexy underwear," Paul joked but Jacob did not find that funny at all. In fact, if it wasn't for the fact that it was my birthday party, I'm pretty sure Jacob would have attacked him.
"Here you go short stuff, I got you something as well. Save the waterworks though," he said while giving me a package.
"I'm scared to open it," I joked. Paul put his arm around my shoulder.
"Open it!" He urged.
I opened it and stuck my hand in the box. I pulled out a wolf stuffed animal that was dark silver. It reminded me of Paul's wolf form.
"Did you get me a mini you?" I smiled up at him.
"Yes I did," Paul smiled proudly. I turned and gave him a big hug.
"I love it," I said into his chest. Paul wrapped his arms around me and squeezed.
"Love you Shorty. Happy Birthday," he told me.
Paul let me go and I grabbed all my presents.
"Let me go put all these things away," I said. Jacob followed me to his car so I could put my gifts in his car.
"You're being spoiled today," Jacob told me.
"Apparently I am," I agreed.
Jacob opened his trunk and I put all my stuff down carefully.
"You ready to go home, it's getting kinda late," he said.
"Yeah, but I should go help Emily clean up," I told him.
"You are the birthday girl. You don't have to clean anything," he told me. I rolled my eyes.
"Well, let me say goodbye to everyone," Jacob nodded his head okay.
I walked over to everyone and said my goodbyes. I tried to stay anyways to clean up, but Emily wouldn't let me. I went back to Jacob after I was forced not to stay to clean up.
"Okay, I am ready," I said. He opened the passenger door and I took a seat inside. Jacob went over to the drivers side and started the car to take me home.
We sat in silence, but it wasn't comfortable. I could feel that he was tense. I didn't have to ask what was on his mind, because I already knew.
We got to the house and he parked in the front.
"You need help carrying everything?" He asked.
"Umm, yeah. I could use the help."
Jacob turned off the car. I unbuckled my seat belt and got out of the car; Jacob followed along. He popped the trunk open and in one grasp, he carried everything.
"Okay, well I'll make sure you don't trip with anything," I said while walking towards the door. I opened the front door and both mom and aunt Jane were on the couch.
"Hey Sweety! Who's that?" Mom asked.
"Oh, that's Jacob carrying some gifts," I told her.
"Hey Jacob!" Aunt Jane chimed.
"Good afternoon. I was just dropping off Milly. I'm going to take these gifts upstairs and I'll be out," he said respectfully.
"No problem," Aunt Jane said.
Jacob followed me up stairs where he carefully put my stuff down.
"I should get out of here quickly. I don't want to upset you mom or anything," he said.
"Yeah, good idea. She doesn't like boys in the room," I agreed.
Jacob looked up at me. His eyes had a hint of concern.
"Can I come back later tonight? I have to give you my present," he said.
"You don't have to bribe me with a present. You can pass by," I said. He smiled at me and made his way towards the door.
"See you later," he winked at me before closing my bedroom door.
I could hear aunt Jane and my mom thank Jacob on his way out. I walked towards all my new gifts and started organizing everything.
I heard a knock on my door.
"It's open," I stated. Mom peaked her head through the door.
"I'm shocked that you celebrated your birthday this year," she told me.
"Well, it wasn't planned by me. I was surprised," I answered.
"That was very sweet of Jacob to coordinate it," she egged.
"Yeah, very nice of him," I said trying to die out the conversation.
"So what's going on between you two?" She asked. I rolled my eyes. I knew she was going somewhere with this.
"Nothing mom. We're just comfortable with each other," I said.
"But you guys aren't dating anymore?" She asked confused.
"Nope. Like I said. We're just comfortable with each other," I said.
"Well, if you want to talk about anything... I'm here. Your father was strange as well. In fact, he didn't want to date me because I wasn't from the reserve but I made him see that we were soulmates. I kinda see that between you two," she said. I gulped. If only she knew how right she was about the soulmate thing.
"Thanks mom. I appreciate it. We're just in a friendly stage and I kinda like where we are now," I said.
"Well, I'm here if you want to talk about the other boy too. You look like you're getting cozy with him too. I heard him outside your window the other day."
My face went bright red.
"Mom! I don't want to talk about boys. Seriously. I'm okay with how I am right now!"
My mom smiled at me.
"I can also give you the sex talk..." my mouth fell open. I grabbed the nearest item which was the wolf plushy and threw it right at my mom. She instantly closed the door and went down the stairs laughing. I picked up my wolf from the floor and threw myself on the bed.
I didn't even realize I snoozed until a faint taping woke me up. I dragged myself out of bed and walked towards the window.
"Don't you think it's a little to late to be waking me up?" I said while rubbing my eyes.
"Aww you look like a baby when you do that," Jacob responded. I rolled my eyes.
"Plus, it's not that late..." he finished. I turned around to see the alarm clock. It was actually in 9pm. Jacob dropped me off around 8pm.
"Damn, I must have been tired. Come in," I said moving away from the window. Jacob slipped in with ease.
I made my way back to my bed where I threw the covers over me.
"So what brings you here?" I yawned.
"I have your gift," he said while pulling a box from behind him.
"I'm excited to see what it is."
I opened the box and pulled out a beautiful light pink dream catcher. It had a beautiful woven pattern and contained three white feathers that turned blue on the tip.
"Wow Jacob, this is beautiful..." I said looking at it in awe.
"Thanks. I knew you'd like it. I made it myself using your favorite colors," he told me.
"Wait, you actually made this?" I asked. He nodded his head proudly.
"With no help from dad," he smiled.
"I wish I could have you hang this now, but we can't be making to much noise..." I looked around the room until my eyes stopped at the lamp next to me. "I'll put it here for now," I said while hanging it on top of the lamp.
"You should go to bed. You've had an eventful day," Jacob said. I nodded my head and threw myself back in bed. Jacob came close to me and placed a kiss on my head. It instantly sent warmness from my toes to my face.
"Goodnight," he said while walking towards the window.
"Goodnight," I said while watching him jump out of the window.
