Chapter 12
Morning arrived; the sunrise pouring in through the window in all sorts of beautiful colours at the small house at the top of the mountain. It was near the end of the sunrise by the time Gray's grey-blue eyes blinked open, and he sat up yawning. He glances around the room only to be surprised to see that Ur was still asleep. But as he glanced to where Lyon slept, he wasn't there.
"Hm..." He mumbles sleepily as he wondered where Lyon must've gone.
Gray glances back at Ur, who was still fast asleep. He swallows feeling a bit guilty as he remembered their late night. Before long Gray suddenly could hear the sound of calm yet distant shouting from outside. The boy crawls out of bed and leans up against the window.
He couldn't see the older boy, but it was his voice alright. Probably out practicing his magic...
Gray glances around the room once more before he gets up and starts towards the kitchen. He grabs a piece of bread, shrugs and takes a bite, eating it as he made his way to the front door, pulling on his jacket before he opens it and heads outside.
Gray made his way through the snow following Lyons footprints and shouts.
"Ice make: Ape!" Lyon's voice shouted, moving both hands as Ur had taught them.
Gray slows to a stop not too far from behind the nine year old. He watches as a large ice ape appears in front of Lyon and punches a huge hole in a snow hill.
Not having noticed Gray, Lyon smirks and readies his next spell, only this time his hands move apart too soon, as he casts his next spell.
"Ice make: eagles!" He shouts.
Gray's eyes go wide and his mouth drops open as five or six ice make eagles appearing flying straight for the snow mound, and they smash right through it making several holes through the ice and snow causing a slight area of the edge to crack and fall.
Lyon stumbles back and leans forward panting and sweating from the effort.
Gray's eyes were still on the area where the most of the action had been.
Lyon sighs after a moment and straightens up only to glance over his shoulder, spotting the eight year old for the first time. For a moment Lyon hesitates, his expression was a look of confusion at first, that slowly turned a bit smug.
"I'm pretty good Huh?" Lyon says to the open-mouthed younger boy.
Gray startled, shaking off his amazement, looking to Lyon with a slight scowl, but in the end he simply shrugged.
"Whatever. If you ask me you seem pretty full off your-" Gray starts grumpily.
Suddenly the two boys hear a scratching noise followed by a kicking noise. Gray and Lyon glance off towards the direction the sounds were coming from. Lyon smiles knowingly.
"Come on, let's go check it out!" Gray exclaims suddenly, making Lyon glance at him in surprise.
"I'll show ya I guess..." Lyon replies quietly.
Was it just him or did Gray just suggest they explore? And had he been...smiling?
Lyon smiles and leads the way despite a few times Gray ran up ahead.
"Slow down!" Lyon called to Gray.
Gray doesn't respond. Lyon shakes his head.
"At this rate you'll scare them away." Lyon mutters moving forward quickly.
"Wha-" Gray starts but then Lyon grasps the hood of his fluffy coat and yanks him back.
"Shh!" Lyon shushed with a finger to his lips.
Gray saw Lyon's gesture but ignores him as he pulls against Lyons grip, peeking out at what lay ahead of them past the tree they were partially behind.
"Wow..." Gray whispers in amazement.
"They're pretty cool huh kid?" Lyon replies. "I like watching the animals. They're so...majestic."
Gray gives Lyon a weirded out look.
"What?" Lyon asks.
"You're only one year older than me." Gray points out. "And you keep calling me kid."
Lyon doesn't respond and both boys gazes turn back to the two male reindeer.
"They're so..." Gray starts.
"Cool?" Lyon suggests.
"Yeah, and fluffy." Gray replies.
Lyon shrugs, but glances at the reindeer again. Gray asked why he called him kid? And Gray's response only answered the question for Gray in Lyon's opinion.
"I bet I can make one of those with my magic." Lyon says. But when he gets no response from Gray he adds. "And I could ride it and fight with it. Handy for all occasions." He says.
"Ride it..." Gray repeats softly.
Lyon glances at him, suddenly shocked to see something in Gray's eyes just light up with excitement.
"That's a great idea snowfla-Lyon!" Gray exclaims slightly faltering when he'd accident called Lyon snowflake again...
Lyon's face showed a mixture of shock, anger and disbelief as he turned to Gray, too stunned by the boys sudden change in behaviour as he stood and started off towards the reindeer. He opens his mouth to speak but no sound comes out as the white haired boy watches the black haired boy rush off towards the reindeer, of which who both looking up but didn't run off.
"Hiya cute fluffy reindeer," Gray says softly as he gets to just two feet away from it.
"Come on, don't run away on me," Gray whispers as two feet becomes one and the reindeers head moves towards him and starts to sniff at him.
"Please don't bite me either..." Gray adds squeezing one eye shut as he felt the animals nostrils touch his hand and his side, until it felt wet and slimy as it stole the last of Gray's bread he'd been eating for breakfast. "H-hey," Gray starts but then let's the rest of the crumbs fall down onto the snow.
Gray glances back at Lyon smirking excitedly. Lyon was also smiling and had started over as well. He had seen lots of wild animals before and would often observe them to better his ice make creations, but this had to be the closest he'd ever been to the reindeer.
Gray turned back to the reindeer that had finished cleaning off his hand and thoroughly soaking it in its slobbery spit and was starting to sniff at the crumbs that were dropped on the ground.
At this point Lyon manages to get closer to the other on and reached out hoping it would let him touch it even tho he had no food on him.
Lyon smiles at the reindeer and at Gray briefly who was closer to the reindeer again before he glanced up from a sound.
"Morning boys! You two coming in for breakfast?" Ur's voice called from just in front of the house.
"Coming!" Lyon called trying not to be too loud with the reindeer here.
Ur suddenly looks surprised and smiles widely as if she's about to laugh.
"Wahoo!" Gray exclaims making Lyon whip around to see Gray not where he'd been seconds before, but now he was closer than ever to his reindeer.
Lyon smiles in excitement as he sees Gray sitting on top of the reindeers back hanging on tightly but gently as the huge reindeer breaks into a run heading closer to the house. Lyon saw Ur smiling at Gray and suddenly Lyon decided he wanted to try it too.
Besides, animals were his specialty.
Gray glances behind him as he sees Lyon trying to get onto the other reindeer. After a few moments Lyon was riding one as well.
"Thanks buddy this is awesome!" Gray exclaims as they passed Ur with Lyon riding his just behind them.
Gray smiled and closed his eyes as he felt the icy wind blow at his face. This had to be one of the most fun things he'd ever done!
The sound of a crash makes Gray look back. He saw Ur smiling and laughing and Lyon's reindeer running further behind him...but Lyon wasn't on it.
It didn't take long to spot Ur's older pupil on his back where he'd fallen off his reindeer and Ur giggling behind him as she walked closer to make sure he was alright.
Gray smirked and laughed. This was so fun and despite knowing better Gray thought it was funny that Lyon had failed to stay on. He won't be bragging about this, anytime soon.
"Guess I should give ya a name..." Gray said leaning closer to the Reindeer. "I'll call ya...Rudolph." Gray says as they're running rapidly through the snow.
Glancing back Gray could see Lyon and Ur and the second reindeer but they were getting further away from Ur's house.
"Heh, looks like Ur's trying to help snowflake catch your buddy back there cuz he couldn't stay on," Gray says with a chuckle. "I'll race ya Lyon! If you ever get back on him!" Gray calls back to the others laughing.
"I'm gonna get you Gray!" Lyon exclaimed in frustration as he chased his reindeer.
Gray smirked at Lyons failed attempts to get back on the reindeer and at how Ur was laughing uncontrollable now.
Wasn't it just this morning he thought back to the awful night they'd had only to feel like there'd been something...something bittersweet or not all bad about it? He wasn't sure if it was the way Ur had been teaching him about constellations or the way she always stayed up with him or how to got him back to bed...but whatever it was it was obviously something about Ur...something about her kindness even when she could also be tough and to Gray maybe unfair too...but he was starting to realize in small moments like these that maybe there was just a bit of hope or light left so where despite everything he'd known and loved being gone...despite their flaws and annoyingness Ur and Lyon weren't so bad...
"Ice make: eagles!" Lyon shouted sending multiple flying birds at Gray that moved as if they were alive and trying to knock him off the reindeer.
Okay... Gray thought. I take it back...Lyon is that bad. Maybe not Ur...but Lyon is a big jerk.
Gray struggled to duck and dodge Lyon's eagles as the flew around him, when he suddenly had an idea.
If he can send eagles at me...then why can't I send something at him?
Gray glances back to see if Lyon was getting stopped or scolded by Ur, who wasn't laughing so much anymore but wasn't telling the older boy off, and she had a thoughtful look on her face as she watched Lyon's spell casting before looking back at Gray. Gray and Ur catch each others gaze for a moment before Gray smirks and ducks once again as he tried to think of what he could send at Lyon's eagles.
"Ice make magic is a creative magic. Like an artists your limits to some extent depend on your imagination, you can really make anything you put your mind to." Ur says to both of them.
"Sounds like a whole lot of freedom and choices." Gray mutters to the reindeer. "Not super powerful maybe...but..." he trails off as an ice eagle nearly knocks him off.
Lyon chuckles from behind them.
"I've got you." Lyon says. "Ice make eagles!"
"Uh oh..." Gray mutters as he glances at the new flock coming his way. "It's now or never, gotta do something!"
Several spell ideas come to mind when Gray suddenly realizes a potential problem...he needed both hands to make his shields...so it probably would be the same for any other spells...and right now...he was trying not to fall off of Rudolph!
"Aw man..." Gray mumbles in frustration.
I'm just gonna have to risk it. He thinks as he can hear the ice eagles approaching. They'd knock him off in seconds if he didn't hurry.
Gray pets the reindeer and whispers. "Steady pal. Try not to let me go flying." He whispers as he squeezes his legs against the reindeer's sides tightly hoping it would be enough to keep him on.
Here goes nothing. Gray thinks as he lets go and his fist met his other hand's palm in the motion Ur had taught him.
"Ice make: Lance!" Gray shouts as he watches a long lace shaped stick of ice form and go flying right towards one of the eagles.
Come on...
The first lance hits it's target and the eagle shatters and falls away.
"Yes!" Gray cheers but his victory was short lived when he remembered the rest of them. "Uh oh..."
"Great job Gray! You might have to hold back a bit Lyon." Ur said from behind them.
"Ice make lance!" Gray shouted and sent another one, even better than the first, at another of the eagles, he could hear Ur but had no time to answer as he clung tightly to the reindeer as he almost fell off from letting go to cast the spell. "Ice make lance!" Gray shouted again. "Got it! Did you see that Rudolph? I got it!" Gray exclaimed.
Ur smiled and shook her head. "Okay, Lyon, Gray, that's enough boys. Before one of you hurts each other."
"Okay..." Lyon replies. "At least I won." Lyon says as he makes his ice eagles disappear.
"Gray? Come on. You two need to get some breakfast." Ur calls as she sees the boy hadn't really heard her.
Gray glances up and sighs. Did he have to? He looks down at Rudolph...then he sighs trying to pet the reindeer to get him calm down so that he could leap or climb off.
"Gray?" Ur called, her voice started to sound worried. Lyon glances at her and then back at Gray.
"I uh..." Gray stammers. "He won't stop! I can't get off!" Gray cries back.
Lyon shakes his head and when Ur steps forward making her way to Gray, he chuckles. Served the brat right for laughing at him for falling off.
But Gray could hear Lyon's chuckle.
"Shut up Lyon! It's not my fault I ain't as good at falling off as you!" Gray shouts, but clamps his mouth shut as he sees Ur running towards him. "What do I do?" He asks eyes wide, but Ur's expression is determined and focused as she runs alongside of Rudolph and Gray.
"Ice make: fence!" Ur shouts making a long fence block off an area up ahead. They wouldn't be able to run like this much further. Ur turns her attention to Gray. "Jump Gray. This way, I'll catch you." Ur instructs.
If Ur expected or youngest student to protest or disobey as he often did she didn't show it, nor did she show surprise when the boy nods and throws himself up and off to the side Ur was on.
"Reckless..." Lyon remarks his gaze on the scene that was unfolding in front of him.
"Reckless hot-headed-" Lyon starts to mutter but then Ur sends a slide of ice below the boy, that sent him sliding down until he was within reach, and at that moment Ur promptly lifted the boy off the ground and started away from the animal.
Lyon smirks.
"Yeah! Yay Ur!" He cheers.
Gray glances back at the reindeer that had slowed and was walking off to rejoin the other one again. Gray glances down as his feet slowly go down until Ur places him back down on his feet.
"Great job Gray." Ur says smiling.
Gray back smirks up at her, which only made Ur smile brighter.
"That was awesome master Ur!" Lyon exclaims as he runs over to them.
Ur smiles but glances back at Gray. Gray suddenly realizes and stops smiling and crosses his arms over his chest trying to keep a serious expression. Ur chuckles. Lyon glances at her in confusion and Gray scowls.
"What?! What's so funny?" Gray snaps trying to fight the smile that tugged at his lips.
"Doesn't matter, I'm starving. Let's go get some breakfast." Lyon says.
"Sounds good." Ur says in agreement.
"Rudolph ate mine..." Gray mutters.
"Looks like we're all in agreement." Ur said smiling proudly at her two students.
Gray's eyes narrow as he watches her gaze. Ur smiles. Gray scowls.
"Sometimes it looks like your trying to be grumpy." Lyon remarked.
"Shut up Lyon!" Gray snapped ramming the older boy in a way that Ur wasn't sure if it was more play or more fight.
"Do you realize how weird annoying and difficult you can be?" Lyon shoots back as he shoves the younger boy off him.
"Do you realize how annoying you are when you're always talking about how good you're doing with your magic or obsessing over how strong Ur is?" Gray argued.
"Gray don't bring me into this." Ur says firmly.
"Yeah, don't bring Ur-" Lyon starts.
"It's annoying when you just agree with everything Ur says." Gray mutters.
"I do not! Just some things!" Lyon argues.
Ur puts a hand to her forehead. As proud of them as she was and as much as she loved them, her two students could sometimes manage to be such headaches.
"It's unoriginal." Gray commented.
"We don't agree on everything! Even if we did at least it would be better than being in agreement with you!" Lyon shot back.
The two boys were practically face to face now looking like they were going to start punching each other.
"Would you two knock it off! I bet you two don't even remember what you're arguing about!" Ur exclaims scolding both boys.
Lyon and Gray glance at each other.
"Course we remember..." Gray mutters.
"Do you?" Ur asks.
Lyon's face turns downcast. Gray suddenly is at a loss for words.
"I thought so," Ur replies.
"Sorry master Ur." Lyon says.
"Sorry..." Gray says just above a whisper.
Ur glances back at them, she sighs then smiles. She takes one of their hands in each of hers and walks with them back up to the house.
