Chapter12_The Gift
Angela spent the rest of the evening reading but she often found herself being distracted by the thought of him. His fangs piercing through her delicate skin, his arms wrapped tightly around her waist, and the looks he had given her all day. What was he doing to her?
She finally gave up and put the book aside to organize her thoughts once and for all. For starters, no one could deny that Niklaus Mikaelson was attractive; sometimes annoyingly attractive but that was another issue. He seemed to enjoy her company even though at first she was sure he couldn't stand her.
And there were his eyes. They looked at her with such intensity that sometimes she couldn't bear to stare back at them. She felt like if she did, she would lose all of her self-control and she was afraid of that. She couldn't possibly give herself to a man she barely knew. And she almost did when she tried to kiss him.
All her life, she was only approached by one boy: Stefan Salvatore. No one else showed any interest in her but him. He chased her around the woods, he played with her, he gave her flowers, and he wanted to marry her someday. How could she ever forget him?
Angela closed her eyes as guilt over forgetting Stephan shook her whole body. He was the love of her life or so she had thought. If she was in love with him, she wouldn't stop thinking about him, even in this unique circumstance she had found herself in. She could still fantasize about him, about reuniting with him, but she didn't.
Her thoughts were primarily about her mother, Klaus, and Ric. It had been a while since she had thought about Stephan and it pained her to think he was probably mourning over her while she completely erased him out of her life.
She sighed as she knew blaming herself for such things wouldn't change her situation. She stood up to get changed for supper and brushed her hair to waste time. She looked at her reflection in the mirror and her eyes instinctively focused on her neck. She smiled weakly and put the brush away to braid her hair.
After she was done, she heard a knock on the door and before she could help it, a smile was planted on her face since she was sure it was him. She opened the door with a coy smile planted on her mouth and it widened as she saw him behind the door.
He was looking even more handsome with his new attire and his hair gently brushed back. She was too busy taking all of his features in to invite him in her room. Klaus gave her a funny look and said: "Good evening to you too, my dear Angela."
Angela felt her heart melting at his sweet words and she gave him a toothy grin as she said: "Excuse my manners. Good evening, Nik." Klaus asked with his hands behind his back: "Can I come in for a moment?" Angela nodded and stepped aside as he walked in and closed the door behind him.
She turned around to see him holding a jewelry box in his right hand with an embarrassed look on his face. She whispered: "For me?" Klaus nodded and placed the box in her hands and said: "Open it." Angela bit her lower lip and carefully opened the box to see a simple diamond necklace that matched her engagement ring.
Her breath caught in her throat at how beautiful the necklace looked and how thoughtful he was. She raised her head and noticed a bit of worry in his eyes but soon he was smiling and asking: "So, do you like it?"
Angela gulped as her feelings ambushed her and before she knew it, she was holding him in response. Klaus seemed shocked but he wrapped his arms around her and whispered: "I take that as a yes." Angela chuckled into his chest and pulled back gently saying: "It's beautiful, Nik. Thank you."
Klaus beamed for a moment and then hid his smile and said: "You are welcome. Do you want me to put it on for you?" She nodded and gave him the necklace before turning around. She pulled her braid to the side as her carefully clasped the necklace around her neck.
She felt her whole body tingle as his fingers briefly touched the back of her neck. She took a deep breath and turned around to look at herself in the mirror. Klaus was standing right behind her as she took in their reflection. He took her hand and she swiftly turned right back to him and squeezed his hand.
He started: "And there is something you should know and keep to yourself. This is not just a necklace. This is for your protection." Angela frowned as she asked: "Protection?" Klaus nodded and continued: "Underneath the diamond is something called Vervain. It can stop vampire compulsion for humans. As long as you wear it, no vampire can compel you."
Angela sighed in relief and asked naively: "Not even you?" Klaus gave her a bitter smile and said: "Not even me." Angela took his other hand and stared right into his eyes as she said: "Thank you, Nik. I really appreciate this." Klaus smiled awkwardly and asked: "Shall we leave for supper?"

"It is not fair that all of you are drinking blood out of your goblets and I am sipping on warm water." Angela whispered into Klaus's ears and he chuckled in response. He raised his goblet to her and whispered: "Then our wedding cannot come soon enough. After you turn, you can have all the blood you want."
Angela pouted and he chuckled again which did not go unnoticed by several people at the table. Damon just gritted his teeth and stared at his food while Esther and Ric smiled sincerely and Rebekah rolled her eyes.
After the supper was over, Klaus guided Angela towards Elijah who was drinking blood and staring out the window. He started: "Hello, brother." Elijah turned around and smiled politely at Angela before asking for her hand and kissing it gently.
Elijah said cheerfully: "I am glad to see you two getting along." Angela blushed without control and Klaus glared at him before saying: "Actually, I hope you and Angela can get along as well because she is very interested in writing and I hope you can be her mentor."
Elijah answered quickly: "Of course. It will be my pleasure." Angela bowed a bit and said: "Thank you, my lord." Elijah shook his head and said: "I insist you call me Elijah." Angela nodded her head with a deep smile and asked: "When do you have some spare time then, Elijah?"
Klaus whispered an 'excuse me' and walked away to Eleanor who seemed bored out of her mind while talking to Ric. She excused herself and they both went to a corner to drink and talk. He started: "Well, you seem like you want to kill yourself!"
Eleanor huffed and whispered: "I thought being back would mean parties and getting drunk but apparently we just have three meals a day and then we go to sleep." Klaus snorted and said: "Well, if you want a party, then just ask."
Eleanor gave him a funny look and then she turned serious before whispering: "What is wrong with Damon?" Klaus frowned and asked: "What do you mean?" She shrugged and whispered: "He is colder than usual and he seems awfully interested in Angela."
They both turned to look at Damon who was openly staring at Angela and Elijah talking. Klaus growled as quietly as he could manage: "He likes her. From day one." She took a sip of her blood and said: "Then you should be careful if you like her as well. We both know what he is capable of."

The weekend came and along with it, a huge celebration in honor of Eleanor. The whole castle was running around and Angela tried to stay out of the way. She mostly spent the past few days with Rebekah and Elijah since Klaus was gone without an explanation. On the bright side, Elijah had helped her confidence in writing a lot, and Rebekah had helped with her day drinking.
Esther had insisted she pick out her own dress for the ball but Angela could not decide. Rebekah had helped her and picked five final options and she only had to choose between them. She finally settled on a dark dress that was tight enough to hug every curve of her body.
She blushed as she looked at her reflection. The maids had brushed and perfumed her hair and pulled it slightly back. Her diamond necklace was shining and she touched it without control. It reminded her of Klaus. She looked down as she realized for the hundredth time that day that she missed him.
Rebekah had promised not to leave her alone at the ball and dance with her so she wouldn't feel lonely without him. But she also said if she found a better looking companion, Angela could always dance with Elijah.
The ball was starting soon so she checked her appearance one last time and went to leave that she heard someone knock on her door. She frowned for a second because Rebekah had said to meet her at the ballroom.
She opened the door and took in Klaus in his formal suit and a new haircut. She was at a loss for words and it seemed like Klaus felt the same way. He was looking her up and down with a look in his eyes that sent shivers down her spine.
Finally, he said: "You look beautiful." Angela smiled and before Klaus could object, she threw her arms around him. Klaus chuckled and asked: "Happy to see me?" Angela moved away and said hurt: "You left without saying goodbye."
He nodded and sighed: "I know. My father sent me away on urgent business." He looked at her expectant eyes and said: "I am sorry." Angela smiled coyly and closed her door and caught his arm saying: "I am glad you are back. And you look… very handsome."
Klaus watched her blush and thanked her as they walked towards the ballroom. He asked about her days and she told him everything. Klaus groaned before they went in: "You should really stop drinking that much."
Angela grinned but managed to put an elegant smile on her face as they walked inside. The ballroom was heavily crowded, music was blaring and people were dancing. Esther and Rebekah approached them first and complimented Angela's dress choice before walking away.
Eleanor brought two glasses of Champagne for them and Angela accepted hers politely. She had steered clear of Eleanor for the past few days but there was no reason that she couldn't be friendly to her. Except for the fact that she had slept with her fiancé for God knows how many times.
The thought made Angela drink her glass in a hurry and politely excuse herself to talk to Rebekah. She knew someone was watching her, she could feel it on the back of her neck, so she slowly turned around as Rebekah was talking about the new guy she had her eye on.
To her surprise, it was not Klaus who was looking at her, but Damon. She forced a smile and turned around but she couldn't focus on what Rebekah was saying. She hoped he would stop staring at her like that. Like he was eating her up with just his eyes.
"Are you even listening to me?" Rebekah asked with a huff. Angela apologized and said: "It's all a bit much." Rebekah nodded in agreement and went to get them drinks. A hand touched her waist and she gasped in fear.
She relaxed as she heard Klaus whisper in her ear: "Seems like I startled you." She turned around with a smile and said: "I was in thought." Klaus gave her a mischievous look and asked: "About me, I hope?" She playfully pushed him away and muttered: "Arrogant."
Klaus chuckled and asked: "Will you dance with this arrogant vampire?" Angela whispered a 'yes' and took his hand as he led her on to the dance floor. She sighed as he pulled her close and started to move to his rhythm. She just hoped that pair of icy eyes would stop staring at her.
