They rushed down the now stopped escalators, trying to make their footsteps quiet as possible, stopping only when they heard the door open. They had gotten in. "Go," Mike urged them.
Their pace was fast, but they still tried to be as quiet as they could when they filed into a subway car, each of them looking over their shoulder to make sure they weren't being followed. Once they were all inside, Mike couldn't stop staring out the door of it. He knew they would be found eventually, so he couldn't just sit here and wait for that to happen. "Stay here, I'll be back," Mike told them while taking a step.
He was immediately pulled back in by the jacket, causing him to roll his eyes, not even having to turn around to know who the culprit was. "No." April still had her hand gripping on his jacket, knowing the second she let go he was going to try to slip out. "I'm going with you."
"April," he warned.
"No." Mike's head fell back, wishing she would just listen to him for once. "You are not going out there by yourself."
He took a threatening step closer to her as Ben just looked back and forth at them, not sure what the hell was going on, but feeling like it was bigger than just them fighting about April going with him. "You're staying here and that's fucking final."
April stared up at him, eyebrows furrowed, face stone-cold of emotion, and her eyes crackled with sparks. "One," her voice was still and calm as she picked up her index finger, her eyes bearing into his soul, "you do not tell me what to do. Two, you have been really mean all day. Three, who's going to watch your six?"
"I'll watch my own six." April opened her mouth again to argue, but Mike's face completely fell and April stopped. His face was crumpled under the pressure and stress that had been wearing on him for the past hour. His mask was finally off and April knew he was tired and terrified, and finally breaking. "April, please, I'm sorry and we will talk about all of it later, I promise, but I just please need you to stay here where you're safe."
She hated it. Every part of her body was screaming at her not to let him go by himself, but he was really shaken up and she knew he needed her to be here. She blinked a couple of times and wet her lips before letting out a low breath and finally looking back up into his eyes. "Promise you won't do anything stupid?"
Mike sucked in a breath before looking around making April roll her eyes as a small smirk came across her face. "Yeah, I can't promise that."
"I hate you," she breathed out, the closest thing to a chuckle she could produce today.
Smiling just a little, he pulled her in by the head and placed such a soft kiss on her forehead that April had to close her eyes, wondering if this was going to be the last time. "I love you, too."
When they pulled apart, he looked back at her, both of them giving each other weakened smiles before Mike ducked out of the train car. Once he was no longer visible, April let out a low, rattled breath as she began to rub her own arms to give herself some comfort. "Oh, I don't like that feeling." Ben walked up to her, putting a comforting hand on her shoulder as April just gave him a weak smile before looking back out.
Mike walked through the subway station, throwing off smoke grenades at any sound he heard. After a few explosions and about a dozen gunshots, April was bouncing and antsy. She couldn't distinguish what was going on or whose bullets were whose. She looked to her father who was waiting back awkwardly, leaving April to shake her head. This was stupid, and as she said earlier, Mike Banning did not tell her what to do. "Screw this."
"April!" Ben called in a hushed whisper just as she stormed out. He looked around at the subway car, knowing he was a lot safer with April than he was in here by himself. "Dammit," he muttered before deciding to follow her before he lost her.
After walking ahead a couple of feet, they rounded a corner where they ran into Mike, Mike automatically training his gun on them. Once he realized who they were, he let out a huff while letting his gun fall to his side, training his eyes on April, knowing this was her idea. "I thought I told you to stay put."
"I did," she defended. "But then I got bored."
A voice came out of a walkie talkie somewhere and by the looks of it, it could have been anywhere with the bodies Mike had left around. The voice sounded again, April pointing over to the one man who was still groaning, partially alive. Mike hurried to him and began beating him with the end of his gun, knocking him further down onto the tile floor. Mike then turned to April, throwing her the gun, "Here." April caught it, but she was also confused by the token after refusing her help earlier.
Mike got on the ground, beating the man with his bare hands, displaying a ferocity that April hadn't seen from him in a long time. It seemed almost unnecessary. "We can do this the easy way." Mike spun him around, pulling out a knife and plunging it into his back, making both April and Ben jump. "Or we can do this the really fucking hard way."
"Answer me, brother," the voice from the walkie talkie came again.
Pulling out the walkie talkie, he put it to his lips and firmly pressed down on the talk button with a sick smile. "Your brother isn't feeling too well at the moment. He's a little bit fucked up." Mike turned back to the man he was currently torturing, hitting him in the back of the head to get his attention. "Hey, what's this dickhead's name?"
"This is Kamran," they each looked back to the walkie talkie, realizing that Mike was getting answers despite how brutal it was. "Who is this?"
"Hey, Kamran," Mike sang out in a careless tune as April shut her eyes, feeling like this was all just going to piss them off even more. "My name's Mike Banning."
"You are the one with the President and his daughter." April and Ben turned to each other, not realizing that April was also on this hitlist.
Turning to look at April, he took a stressed breath before going back to the conversation. "Bingo. So, why don't you boys pack up your shit and head back to Fuckhead-i-stan or wherever it is you're from."
When Mike's finger moved from the talk button, April slapped him lightly on the arm. "That's racist." Mike turned back to look at her, irritated that she would be hung up on that little comment right here, right now, in the middle of a war zone. "It is," she told him in a hushed whisper before folding her arms in front of her chest.
"You should have let us kill them quickly because now we are going to kill them slowly and stream it live for the whole world to see." Mike turned back to look at April as she threw her hands in the air, knowing that she was always going to be included in these wild assassination plots because they always wanted to make her father suffer before killing him. "Can you hear me, Mr. President? April?"
April hated the way he said her name, so she just nodded to Mike, officially on the same terms with torture at this point. Ben also nodded, getting just as angry as her. "Tell him," Ben growled out.
"Yeah, they can hear you," Mike turned his head back to the man lying in front of him, close to death. If they were going to try to kill his family, he wasn't going to second guess killing theirs. "But I want you to hear something first." Mike dug the knife deep into the man's side as he let out screams before gurgling and choking on his own blood. "That's the sound of your brother dying." Mike pulled his knife back out of the man's side, hoping the man on the other end could hear it. "Yeah, not much of a talker that one. I'll see you soon, Kamran."
Mike dropped the radio before standing up and wiping off his knife on his pants. April watched him, knowing him well enough to know that he was not okay. "Was that really necessary?" Ben asked as he walked closer to Mike.
Mike looked him dead in the eye before shaking his head. "No, but he pissed me off." He grabbed April's arm, pushing her deeper into the train station. "We gotta keep going."
Washington D.C. 12:24 pm
Megan paced across the living room while talking to Conner on the phone. "I've tried all three of them and no one's answered."
"They're saying communication could be compromised across London."
Austin was outside with Tessa, glued to his phone, constantly refreshing and checking every single news report he came across to stay updated and to make sure he had the most accurate information. Although through that, he was finding that some reports were contradicting the other and quickly realized no one knew exactly what was happening. He didn't usually like to get his news through social media, but he had been exhausting all the other platforms, and maybe there was something there he hadn't seen yet. Lo and behold, the second he opened the app the same picture came through over and over again and was being shared by everyone. He turned to see Megan pacing while holding the phone up to her hear and threw the sliding glass door open before hurrying into the house with Tessa trailing closely behind him. "Conner," Austin began after almost crashing into Megan, hoping he could hear him despite the phone being right next to Megan's ear. "You should check social media."
Trying to regain her balance, Megan turned over to Austin with wild eyes, terrified there was an even worse development. "What is going on?"
Reluctantly, he pulled up his phone so she would be able to see. There was a picture of Ben and April with X's over their eyes and a time. Tonight, at eight o'clock. "Austin," Megan began in a shaky voice. "How soon is that in London?"
With a long sigh, Austin shook his head before telling her. "A little over two hours."
"They're getting executed in less than three hours," Megan whispered, needing to put it in words to grasp the severity of the situation.
London 5:25 pm
The three ran through an abandoned subway tunnel before finally stopping for a break. April felt like her throat was burning and her legs were aching. Mike looked them both over when they stopped before asking, "You okay?"
April nodded, but Ben answered, "Yeah." He then turned to Mike with a slight smile. "Made out of bourbon and poor choices, huh?"
Mike chuckled to him before pointing to some forgotten equipment. "Sit down. Take a breath." When he turned to look at April, she was still standing, hand on her stomach as she was trying to catch her breath. Mike watched her like she was gonna shatter at any second. He moved towards her, moving the strap for his gun so it was now behind his back. "Can we talk for a minute?"
April was experiencing an influx of emotions right now. She was worn out, panicky, and infuriated, and by the time Mike asked her that question, she thought she had about enough. "Okay?" She really didn't want to get into a fight right now, and for some reason, that's all he wanted since the moment they crash-landed. Mike placed his hand on the small of her back as they walked off a few feet. Once they were far away enough to have some privacy, April crossed her arms across her chest before turning to face him. She stared at him, waiting for him to let her have it before offering him a careless shrug. "What?"
Mike gave her a careful once over before letting out a flustered sigh. No one was having a good day, but April especially wasn't, and he was part of the reason for that. Mike knew if he was going to do this right, he had to start with an apology. "I'm sorry I've been mean the past hour or so, but I've also been dealing with a new issue."
April had no idea what he was talking about or insinuating, so she gave him another shrug, wanting him to just come out with it already and stop dragging this out. "Okay, what issue have you been dealing with?"
Closing the small gap that was between them, he sighed before meeting her eyes, not angrily, but with concern and a little bit of hurt. "Are you pregnant?"
April's eyes shifted downward, her first thought to deny, but he clearly found out from someone. She gulped before bringing her eyes back up to his, all of his behavior suddenly made perfect sense. "Yes." She shrugged, knowing the gig was up so there was no use in tiptoeing around the subject anymore. "Did my dad slip up? Who told you?"
He stared at her, sighing before shaking his head. "It wasn't your dad."
Locking her eyes with his, she placed it. The timeline of his attitude matching up with the only other possible option. "Lynne told you when you were alone."
As he nodded, April took in a deep breath. This was exactly what she didn't want to happen. She needed this to come from her and she needed this to come out after they were out of danger because he couldn't take on all these people by himself. "How far along are you?"
"Ten weeks," she answered instantly as her eyes found his again. "But we're not out of the clear yet. A miscarriage can happen any time before twenty weeks, but where we're at right now, it's rare."
Mike clenched his teeth, but not in the way April expected. Now April knew why he was acting the way he was. She hurt his feelings. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"I was going to." She went for his arm getting him to meet her eyes. "Tonight at the top of the London Eye and it was going to be special and romantic, but then all this shit happened, so I made up my mind to tell you as soon as we got out of this."
"And what if we didn't?" He shrugged at her blankly, wondering if that ever crossed her mind. "What if we don't get out of this?"
April shook her head, not finding that a worry. "I know we're going to get out of this because if anyone can get out of something like this, it's us."
"Then why didn't you tell me about the pregnancy when you found out?" His voice was now in a hushed whisper, and even though he was obviously trying to control his temper, it was starting to come out.
April let out a long, breathy sigh, knowing she owed him the truth. "Because I am terrified I am going to miscarry again." Mike watched her, not sure if he had ever seen April like this. Her eyes kept darting over his entire face and she kept pushing her hair back or running her hands down her tight dress. "And I didn't want to tell you because the last time killed you." She sniffled a little bit as her chest vibrated with her next breath. "I had never seen you so broken and lost before, and there was nothing I could do to fix it. This time, I could fix it, and I couldn't put you through that again."
It wasn't what she said that took Mike so off guard. It was what this situation meant for her. "April," Mike began, looking right into her eyes. "You mean you've been carrying this weight by yourself for at least a month?"
This was what she didn't expect. She expected him to get angry, excited, hurt, but she didn't expect him to pity her. She didn't like that he was making her out to be the saint when she had lied to him. "Um," she took a couple of steps back, needing to process and be alone. "I think I'm gonna scout ahead."
"April," Mike tried, but April was already moving towards the rest of the tunnel.
"I'm fine. I just want to scout ahead."
"You can't go by yourself."
April pulled out a grenade from one of her pockets. He looked through his pockets, sighing once he realized she had taken it from him. Although, he was impressed that she was able to take it without him noticing. "I'm fine."
"April," Mike tried again, but she was already heading down the long tunnel. "April!" She wasn't going to turn around. She kept going, far enough that they couldn't hear her crying as she walked.
With a heavy sigh, Mike sat down on some of the abandoned subway equipment and began fiddling with the machine gun. Ben watched him for a long moment. "You know you can talk to me about things, right?" Mike looked up at him, taken off guard. "You know, I'm technically your father-in-law now."
Collecting his thoughts, Mike sighed before pushing his tongue around the bottoms of his teeth. "She's scared she's going to miscarry again, and I don't blame her." Ben nodded, thinking that might have been the case for the limited amount of people knowing. "I just wish she would have told me, so I could have helped her feel less alone."
Ben watched Mike stare off at the ground before scooting up on his makeshift seat to grab Mike's attention again. "Ever since Maggie," Mike's eyes clicked up to his. This would be the second reminder of that day. "April is terrified of losing people, and," Ben looked around at their situation, "likely so." Mike scoffed, not quite sure how they ended up in this situation again. "And she will do anything not to lose someone." Ben stared at him for a moment, not sure if this had clicked for Mike yet. "That includes losing your spirit." Mike leaned back into the wall before shutting his eyes. "This past month I've never seen you happier, and April didn't want to take a chance on losing that."
Mike knew their conversation needed a redo especially with this new insight on this issue, but he was beginning to worry that they may not get the chance depending on how the rest of this night was going to go. Mike then turned to look at Ben, getting a small smile on his face. "You're good at this."
Ben chuckled while shaking his head. "I know my daughter."
After another smile, Mike made eye contact with him before giving him a small nod. "Thank you."
Ben wished they could talk more about it all, but they were kind of on a time crunch here. They had to get back on topic with the situation at hand. "How many do you think died?"
Mike sighed, bringing his attention back to the gun. "I don't know. A lot."
He shook his head feeling a tremendous pressure on him as he looked off at the ground, similar to how Mike did earlier. "All those innocent people are dead because of me."
"No, not because of you, because of them." Mike stood up, needing Ben to know this wasn't his fault. "They're trying to kill you, sir, and they've killed all these people just to make everyone else a little more afraid. Well fuck that, and fuck them."
Ben stared at him for a long moment before looking back to the direction April had gone. He got up, going to Mike, needing to say this to him now before it was too late. "Mike, you don't let them take me."
Mike looked him in the eye, planting himself before answering him. "I'm not going to."
"Let me finish," Ben warned before looking off to the rest of the tunnel for April before turning quickly toward him. "If it comes to it if it's going to happen – "
"Sir – "
"Mike! Please let me get this out before April comes back." He stared back to the President, deciding to let him say what he needed to. "If it comes to it, I want you to kill me. If you kill me, they have no reason to take April, and you don't fucking let them take my daughter." His voice had gotten a lot lower, and Ben knew that what he was asking Mike to do was unfair, but this had to happen for April's sake and his own. "That's an order. I will not be executed for propaganda as my son and the American people see me on fucking YouTube for the rest of their lives, and my daughter doesn't deserve that."
Mike nodded as he looked down, not sure he could do that. Not only because of his job but because of April. He didn't know if he could look her in the eye ever again if he had to kill her father days before their wedding. Then again, this was his job. This was a direct order from the President. Father-in-law or not, if it came to it, Mike had to kill him. "Okay," Mike finally breathed out, finally agreeing.
"Guys!" April came running back to the group, both Ben and Mike concerned someone was chasing after her until she came to a halt and pointed from where she had just come from. "The end of the tunnel is right up ahead."
Ben and Mike turned to look at each other, having a silent understanding of the conversation they just had. April could only know this agreement happened if Mike had to utilize it.
