This is shorter than I thought it'd be, but since I have some big stuff coming up, I wanted to tie the loose ends in her first week and get some things established before I get really swamped. Don't worry, I am coming back, and I might be able to get a chapter or two out in the next few weeks, but if I don't, ya'll will know why. Enjoy!
The first week of school was more difficult than Elizabeth imagined it would be. Not only was she stared at wherever she went, and often heard "Freak" as she passed by, it seemed the entirety of Slytherin had found much too much joy in the whole situation. They would say she was a Slytherin at heart, and that Gryffindor was not her true house. It got under her skin very much, but she didn't want to cause trouble twice in one week, so she bit her tongue, though she did send them glares.
She had become more acquainted with Ginny's family, and had met all four of her brothers currently at school. She learned Percy was just as pompous as Ginny described, that Ron was best friends with Harry Potter and a very clever girl named Hermione Granger, and that Fred and George really were adept at pranking. They had snuck an elixir into one of the older Gryffindors, Angelina Johnson's teacup, making her hair turn blue. She had only laughed, and joked they were losing their touch.
Zarah, Oliva, and Allie reached out more to Elizabeth and Ginny, which was nice, but Elizabeth could tell they were their own group, and Ginny and Elizabeth were their own duo. Not to say their conversations about Quidditch teams or school weren't pleasant, they were, but there was a lack of closeness that had developed so quickly between the outcasts of their year.
Indeed, it became clear that Ginny and Elizabeth were outcasts to everyone else, except for other Gryffidors. They were for the most part sympathetic to Ginny's chamber experience, and happy to have a real live Gryffindor in their house. But to everyone else, Ginny and Elizabeth were at the bottom of the pond. Elizabeth, because she could do "freakish" magic with her hands, and Ginny because she had been a vessel for You-Know-Who.
But at least they had each other.
By now, it was Saturday night, and Elizabeth was on her way to Remus's classroom. She was happy she'd lucked out by getting him as her detention proctor. He wasn't boring, like Binns, mean like Snape, or crazy, like she heard Trelawney was.
She knocked on the door, even though it was ajar. She heard Remus get up from his desk, and he grinned when he saw her.
"If it isn't my favorite Gryffindor!" He greeted with a smile. "Ha ha. Very funny." Elizabeth responded, fake annoyed.
"Well, come on in, let's get your detention started." Elizabeth followed him in, and sat down at a desk in the front row. Remus gave her a few feet of parchment. "I must not use magic on another student. About two hundred times, or however many fills two hours." he told her. Elizabeth dipped her quill in an ink bottle, and started writing.
"Minerva made me do lines on the first day, too." Elizabeth told him just as she finished line fifteen.
"Really? Was it because of the incident?" Remus asked. "Yes. She didn't want me developing any bad habits like recklessness." Elizabeth told him. "That sounds like her. Very practical and effective, I presume?" he asked. "I guess so. People have been saying things about me all week, but I haven't shrunk anyone else so far." She reported. "Good for that. Let's save your shrinking for someone who really deserves it." Remus joked. Elizabeth smiled, still writing her lines.
"It's funny. I hadn't really imagined her being that involved with my life once school started. I thought she'd be grading things or planning things when she wasn't teaching. And since I'm in her class, she could still keep an eye on me." Elizabeth told him a little while later. "Well, she is your official guardian. I'm sure if any of the teachers here had children here as students, they'd be more involved in their lives when not in class." Remus theorized. "I suppose that makes sense. It's just a little strange, I suppose." Elizabeth said. "Yes, well, I'm sure you'll adjust. It has only been a week." Remus reasoned as Elizabeth started on line sixty-two.
Two hundred and twenty-three lines later, Elizabeth was released from detention. As she was walking back to her dorm, she thought more about what Remus had told her. He was probably right. Minerva was her guardian, it was probably her job to look after Elizabeth, even outside of class.
She lay in bed that night, but hadn't had much luck actually sleeping. She knew the enchantment had altered her sleeping habits quite drastically, since she hadn't gotten a wink of sleep over the summer. Though she had more important things to do aside from sleeping. And it did take her a while to fall asleep Sunday night, but she thought that was because of her dementor encounter and talking to Ginny. She'd fallen asleep relatively easy the rest of the week afterwards, since adjusting to actual school was pretty tiring.
But now, she just couldn't sleep. What was the word for that? She could've sworn she'd heard it before. Well, whatever it was, she wasn't going to sleep anytime soon from what she could tell.
She quietly walked down the stairs, and got situated on a red, plushy couch, and studied the dying fire. The atmosphere felt quite cozy. Hopefully sleep inducing.
After a little while, she heard footsteps. She turned, and saw Harry was descending the boy's staircase. He looked at her, a little surprised.
"Sorry, did you want to be alone?" He asked. "No. I don't mind. I was just afraid you were Percy." Harry smiled as he sat on the other end of the couch. "He's not so bad. At least before he became Head Boy." Elizabeth grinned. "I'm not so sure about that. Ginny told me he can be a bit of a bore. And that's putting it nicely."
They sat in a comfortable silence after that. "What's keeping you from sleeping?" Harry asked after a little more time had passed. "I'm not really sure. I think it's an after effect from the enchantment I was under. Guess you don't need much sleep after sleeping a thousand years." Elizabeth explained. It felt a little strange saying it so casually, but Harry was a Gryffindor. Gryffindor's stuck together. "What about you?" She asked. "My friend Hagrid is in trouble. He had a Hippogriff in a Care of Magical Creatures class, and it scratched Draco Malfoy. His dad is furious." Elizabeth felt bad for Hagrid. He had returned after the announcement was made, and she thought he was a very nice man. "That's terrible. I hope Malfoy doesn't take it too far." Elizabeth said. "Me either." Harry responded.
"Say, since neither of us can sleep, how about we get some hot chocolate from the kitchens? I know a secret passage we can take." Elizabeth offered. "Really?" Harry asked in disbelief. "Really. Come on!"
