Chapter 17
He looked from Miranda to Ben: "Hell no, you can't date my sister." Part of Miranda was grateful. The other part stared at her brother. Who was he to deny her a date? Something she hadn't had in a long time. Kenny caught her looking. "Yes?"
"Did you forget that I'm grown?" She asked, forgetting that she didn't want to go in the first place.
Her older brother turned to her. "You told him to ask me. He asked me. And me is saying: hell no." Kenny looked at his friend. "You ready?"
Ben tightened his mouth and tossed up one hand. "I guess." His eyes landed on Miranda and she resisted the urge to lick her lips. "Nice to officially meet you, Miranda."
She stuck out her hand. Something in her wanted to touch him. And she couldn't really explain the feeling. He took it, shaking it. "Yeah, you, too."
Kenny walked out with Ben following behind him. Just before the door closed, Miranda rushed to it, throwing it open. "Hey!" She shouted.
Both men turned and asked: "Me?"
"Not you, friend of Kenny," Miranda said. "My brother."
Kenny walked over to her and she pulled him into her apartment. "What, Mandy?" She just glared up at him. He matched her gaze. A few seconds passed before he said: "Are you mad?"
"Yes!"
"Why?"
"Because," she told him unsure of why she was upset. If she wanted to go out with Ben, she should have just said yes, but she didn't and now she was stuck.
He leaned against the door. "Look, I don't want you dating my friends."
"I dated Tucker."
Kenny gritted his teeth. "And look how that turned out. He broke your heart and now I don't talk to him." She sighed. He was right. After Tucker cheated on her, Miranda had been devastated, prompting Kenny to not only punch her ex-boyfriend in the face, but to dismantle a ten-year friendship. "I can't have that happening again. Warren's one of my good friends. I'm sorry, Mandy."
"We're older now, I—"
"Mandy, no. I'm asking you to not do it. Promise me."
Even though it seemed unreasonable, she promised. "Okay."
Kenny hugged her and kissed the top of her head. "You could use a shower."
"You're a jerk," she laughed loudly. "Get out of my house!"
