Clark's P.O.V.
It's been almost a month since Sayna told about where she's from.
I expected her to have nightmares because of it but, instead, she seems lighter somehow. It's like she's let go of something that was weighing her down.
She hasn't changed that much though. I think she might always be a little skittish.
I've helped her to filter sounds so she's not as jumpy. I have plenty of experience and she made a good student.
She actually eats in the cafeteria now.
Sure, she doesn't do it every day but still. She seems a little more confident now and it's just one thing that I'm happy to see.
I also like how she's gotten a bit bigger. She's gained an inch, which makes her half my height*, along with another pound and a half.
I've noticed that she doesn't seem to like getting measured too much, likely due to a man she calls "the principal" in her notebook. He, along with most of the workers at the I.E.C., would run tests on her and the children there.
Bruce and I were able to expose all that the I.E.C. kept hidden. We found a girl, known in a file as Cloak, who would work to keep the I.E.C. a secret.
According to the file, she had never been allowed to see the sun. She had very little language skill and was clearly being abused, as she had bruises along with a lot of scar tissue.
The I.E.C. is under new management now but Cloak has a lot of healing to do.
I've taken Sayna back there so she can see her friends. She clearly liked the visit and I got to meet her friends too, as you may have guessed.
She later told me that it felt weird going back. She obviously doesn't call the I.E.C. home anymore, which might explain the way her return felt.
Well, that and the new workers. There's more like Zoe now. Kind, not clinical.
Bruce and I want the kids, especially Cloak, to be cared for. He was able to get a speech teacher for her. She is learning words though her speech will likely always be a little halting.
Sayna's helped out some with her telepathy. She told me that just because she can't talk it doesn't mean she can't help others with words.
That's my caring little girl.
I know that she's helped with language before. Bat, one of her friends that I met, was a student of her language lessons. He was pretty happy to meet his teacher again.
All of her friends were happy to see her again.
I didn't just see them obviously. I met all the kids at the I.E.C.
It's hard to say which one I was most impressed by. Each one very well could be a potential Justice League member.
I didn't tell her bullies that. Maybe Sayna's rubbing off on me.
Anyway, we're at her first Halloween party now. Everyone I work with at the Planet is here.
Remember how I said that I had mixed feelings about dressing up as Sully? Well, Ma wouldn't hear a word of it.
Yes, that means Sayna is Boo. She's wearing the monster costume but it looks slightly different from the one in the movie. Her hands, for a reason you know, have been kept free.
She seemed kind of annoyed when she found out that no one's going to be Mike, likely because he's her favorite color, but she accepted the explanation of him being busy with paperwork.
I like her imagination. She makes a cute Boo, in my opinion.
I still feel kind of silly in my costume. You just want all the Skittles, don't you, Sayna?
Steve notices us then grins. "Look, everyone! Clark's a kitty!"
Great.
Wait, he's seen Monsters Inc?
I'm about to ask to learn more when Sayna glares at him and says I'm her kitty.
Jimmy laughs.
I smile, despite myself, since I think that's kind of adorable.
Lois grins. "Attagirl, Sayna! Show him who's boss!"
Lois, she's 7.
She turns to Lois then tells her she didn't do that to show Steve who's boss, she did it to defend me.
My smile widens.
That's even more adorable. She looks out for her family.
I've got a little hero for a daughter.
Soon, she's filling up a goody bag.
I laugh gently. "Save some Skittles for everyone else, Sayna."
She slowly nods, making it clear she's only reluctantly agreeing with me.
She gets what looks to be a good variety of candy. My little girl's got a sweet tooth.
I wonder if I should take her trick or treating later. I'll ask her what she thinks.
I tap her on the shoulder.
She finishes filling her bag then looks at me.
I ask her my question.
She scratches her head then her eyes light up. I know that means she's got an idea.
She says that she could go out with a bag that has the words that are supposed to be said written on it.
Jimmy grins and tells her that's a great idea.
She thanks him then smiles for a photo he takes of us.
Later, we go home and have dinner then Sayna prepares a bag.
I smile on seeing that she's written the words in alternating orange and black letters.
She puts the candy that she's already got inside her new bag, which fills about a fifth of it, then eats a few pieces.
I like seeing the joy on her face.
She tries to laugh then hands me a pouch of candy corn.
I take it with a grin. "That's funny, Sayna."
I wonder how much of that is due to Lois.
I know Sayna likes Smallville. I've seen her look at peace there, with the animals.
She's used her connection with them to help out with some things on the farm. Ma says that she's a good hand.
I've never seen an animal act mean around my little girl and I doubt that one ever will.
Pa says she's calmed a bull. He said it was something else to watch.
I think seeing someone do that without saying a word would make it all the more extraordinary.
She never tells us what she says to any animal because, as she put it, the conversations are private.
I can accept that, even though I'm curious. She's acted as an interpreter for a few animals when they've gotten hurt.
I'm distracted from my thoughts by her asking telepathically if we can go out now.
I check the clock. It's late enough.
"Sure, we can."
A grin spreads across her face.
Soon, we're outside.
Her idea ends up working great which makes her grin widen as her bag gets more and more full.
She rubs her eyes once it's completely full then securely closes it.
I offer to carry her home.
She looks at her bag.
"I have a place for that."
She rubs her eyes again then hands it to me.
I put it inside a hidden pocket then pick her up.
Shortly, we're back home.
I wake her up so that she can brush her teeth and get ready for bed.
I put her candy bag on top of her dresser.
It's not too long before she leaves the bathroom.
She gets in a green nightshirt then yawns.
I put her in bed then tuck her in.
She uses telepathy to tell me Good night then grabs Pippin and closes her eyes.
I gently run one hand through her hair then softly say a Good night and Sweet dreams.
She must have heard me because she smiles.
I tiptoe out of her room, making sure to turn off the light, then softly close the door.
I go to my room and check my phone because I just heard a text alert.
It's from Jimmy. He sent the photo.
I grin and print it out then, soon, I have it in a silver frame. This will be going on my desk at the Planet.
I also send a copy to the rest of her family.
Yes, Ma, the costumes were a hit and the hidden pocket was a good idea.
*according to canon, Clark is 6'3".
