This intense silence that could be cut with a knife. A rather fitting setting if you were to ask him. One moment everything seemed to be looking up the next everything started to spiral downward and he wasn't surprised. This is the first time he has been alone with his daughter after all. A daughter that he can see so much of her mother in her. The long black locks. The way she carries herself not backing down from a single challenge. The way she is so kind to all those around her willing to offer a helping hand at any moment's notice. A young woman that he knew he would have to tread carefully with. If she is anything like her mother in other areas then being anything less than truthful to her would prove to be costly. A daughter that stands silently by his side right now looking out towards the ocean with the faintest of smiles across her face that she tries desperately to hold back. After all this was a moment she has been waiting her entire life for according to Diana. To be able to talk face to face with her father. To be able to see the man that her mother told her stories about. He just hopes he doesn't disappoint.
" I've heard you've been accepted into The Justice League."
An amazing achievement. Such an achievement that he had been told in confidence by Diana that their daughter holds proud. Why wouldn't she? It's an amazing achievement. To be considered one of the elite heroes throughout the world. To be assigned the missions that only well established heroes could handle. Such a feat if he knew Diana well enough knows their daughter will go head first into without showing one ounce of fear. If not there would be no way she would allow for their daughter to adventure off on her own.
Nodding happily with a hint of a smile forming paying a quick glance towards Bruce seeing him staring straight ahead at the ocean unable to help herself from doing so with a sigh Elissa crosses her arms over her chest.
" I have although mother is still on the fence about it. She is proud of me for accomplishing such a feat but she has advised me to take extreme caution and think about it before making a decision. I don't know. I mean it's a big opportunity for me. To stand and fight side by side with the greatest heroes this planet has ever seen. To be able to experience all of the things mother had. It almost seems like it's too good to be true…."
" But?"
Looking back towards her father as she sees him looking at her out of the corner of his eye with a questionable look letting out a sigh lowering her eyes to the ground rearing back Elissa kicks a loose piece of stone off the cliff and watches it disappear down into the water with a silent splash.
" But there is something…..strange about it. I don't know. Not that i'm not flattered at receiving the opportunity but it seems like it's being forced. Kinda like it benefits them more than it does me."
She wasn't wrong. He knew this and he would bet every last cent of his fortune that Diana knows this as well. How his daughter had received such an opportunity was still unknown to him. From what he had been told she has only been off this island a handful of times and each of those times were always in the accompany of her mother. How would they know if she has what it takes to be a full fledged member of The Justice League? The answer to that question is simple. They don't. Don't have a single clue. How could they? Never has she been out on the field. Never has she once faced off against some of the worst beings this planet has to offer. It simply wasn't possible so that just leaves one thing. The lone reason that he can think of as to why he would want Elissa a part of The Justice League and that reason is simple. A reason that makes his blood boil on the inside. It wasn't about strengthening their group. It wasn't about ensuring the world would be safe from all those that try to harm her. No it was about something else. Something that sickens him.
Power. That is all it was. For them to have more power. Something that for years as a founding member he never once tried to achieve. Why would he? To seek such a thing would be taking a step towards becoming the very thing they had gone out to face on a nearly daily basis. Whose idea it was it still left up into question in his mind though he has a good idea. A really good idea on just who would try to achieve such a thing. The last founding member still with The Justice League. The proclaimed leader of The Justice League.
" You're right."
Now that was something she wasn't expecting. Out of the three outcomes she had seen coming this one throws her for a loop. On one hand she could have seen him congratulating her on achieving such a feat. Her parents were founders of the group after all. It was only fitting if their daughter would follow in their footsteps. On the other hand she could have seen him trying to persuade her to reconsider just like her mother has. Why her mother is so amendment on her not joining The Justice League is beyond her. From all of the stories she had heard growing up the league was how her parents had met. How they had bonded to eventually have her. How she factored into being born.
The miracle child. That is what her fellow sisters had once called her. A name she still hears from time to time whenever they think she is out of sight. A child that in retrospect shouldn't have been born. It was simply not possible. Not from the way her own mother had been born. A mother that had not been conceived like any normal child. No but instead made out of clay. How it was possible that she was born was still anyone's guess. She would just have to take her mother's word that great Hera had blessed her with a child. But this subtle answer. This short response really leaves her mind reeling. Just what does he mean by she is right? What is she right about? Right about feeling wary when it comes to the members of The Justice League?
" About what?"
And with that paying a glance towards her face seeing nothing but confusion in her eyes prying his eyes away to look towards the horizon taking a few moments to debate in his head whether or not to reveal his thoughts the answer is made for him as he feels her questionable stare burning a hole through him. Such a stare that makes his lips twitch upward that doesn't go unnoticed as her eyebrow raises up in question.
Just like her mother.
She truly is everything that Diana had described to him. All of their best traits mixed together into one with nothing getting past her. Their intelligence. Their strength. Their sense of justice if everything he has seen so far is any indication. There was no sense in lying to her. God forbid if he tries to anyways. She would just see through the lie as quickly as her mother is as well.
" They are trying to use you. The Justice League isn't what it used to be. When your mother and I first formed the league with Superman it used to stand for something. The message we were trying to achieve on a worldwide audience was to have a way to inspire people to do what is right. To put others before themselves no matter the cost but over the years things have slowly started to change. Heroes are born every single day. Some that wear capes and masks. Others that are fortunate enough and brave enough to go out of their way to do what is right and those people are the real heroes. In your mother's and mine's eyes our message has been well received. When we first started we hoped that one day the need for masked and caped heroes would become a thing of the past but some others don't feel as strongly about this as we do. There are many that still believe superheroes will always be needed to fight this planet's battles. Those that continue to fight on hoping to make the world a better place using any means necessary."
" You make it sound like it's a democracy."
" In a way it is. Out of the original members of The Justice League only a handful of us are still alive today. Some that have stuck around to train the next generation of heroes. Others that simply now live out the rest of their lives away from the spotlight with their loved ones but one thing has stayed the same over the years. The man at the top of the chain of command."
And she knew just who he was talking about. How couldn't she? Even the amazons know of Superman. Young and old. An extraordinary being. One of the greatest heroes this planet has ever seen. The proclaimed leader of The Justice League. A man that despite his great accomplishments always felt to her to be a little full of himself. At least that is the impression she gets from her mother. What had transpired to cause once great and close allies to become rather distant was beyond her. A story she hoped she would hear one day come straight from her mouth. Although that answer might be easier given from another. The very man by her side. She had heard a brief version of the tale. How her father had resigned from The Justice League after what she described to have been thought of as an injustice on his part. Though the way her mother told the story she never truly thought he was in the wrong at all.
" Your mother might not have told you this. In a way she is trying to protect you from the truth but the reality of the situation is this. The world is changing and to some that is a terrifying thought and those that are most terrified of this are in The Justice League. If i had to guess the real reason why Clark wants you to join is so that he would have the ability to call on the aid of Themyscira whenever he saw fit. It is something he has not been able to do for quite sometime and having the princess of Themyscira on his team would position himself better with your mother to rebuild the trust they once had."
Shaking his head sadly at such a one sided thought, turning to face his daughter fully gripping his cane tightly Bruce looks Elissa dead in the eyes with a wry grin.
" The choice in the end will be yours to make. The Justice League would present to you the opportunity to make a name for yourself in Man's World if you so choose to. Either way, I fully support your decision no matter what you choose."
Smiling briefly at the little nickname she has always heard being described by her mother for the lands outside of Themyscira turning to look away from his eyes and back towards the ocean after a couple of seconds in silence with a faint whisper that is barely heard Elissa whispers out.
" And what if i don't want that?"
Biting down on her lower lip nervously feeling his eyes on her once again letting out a sigh with a look of determination Elissa snaps her head to look back towards Bruce finding him staring at her silently with no judgment in his eyes. No ounce of anger for her to possibly decline such an offer. To not follow in his footsteps. Something at this moment she is nothing but grateful for.
" What if I decide to decline the offer? Wouldn't you be disappointed…."
" No."
Such a quick answer that makes her look back towards her father with wide eyes. A father that simply shakes his head at her making her eyes go even wider.
" You can never disappoint me. You are my daughter. My blood and nothing you ever do will ever disappoint me."
Blinking away the unshed tears that want to fall quickly looking away to wipe the evidence of her watery eyes away before he has a chance to see them turning back towards him to give him a bright smile looking back towards the ocean Elissa nods her head happily.
" Then, I guess there is only one thing left for me to do."
Grinning briefly nodding his head in understanding as he looks off towards the treeline seeing a familiar figure starting to emerge out just as he is about to turn away from the cliff and make his way down to meet her halfway once again Bruce comes to a stop when a faint whisper is heard. A question asked softly by Elissa that it strains his ears just to hear it but he did.
" Will you stay with us?"
A question that makes him pause. A question he can hear the plea in her voice with a silent message. The message to please stay here. Please stay on Themyscira with them and not return to Gotham City. To stay here with his family. A conversation he had discussed with Diana at great lengths with. And the answer to that question is simple. It was a part of the agreement after all for the training Mcginnis and Walker are receiving here on this island. Turning his head slightly to look over his shoulder back towards Elissa without muttering a response Bruce merely nods his head until before he knows it he feels as though the wind is being knocked out of him when a black haired missile smashes into his side bringing him into a tight embrace.
