I might've made a mistake

Oikawa Pov

After the trio left, it was just us. I looked over at Suzumi, who was still standing in the same spot as when I had entered the scene.

'Hey,' Her blue eyes looked up to meet my own, 'you okay?' I asked softly.

'Yeah.' She answered softly and offered me a small smile.

'I'm sorry.' I said and bowed once more.

She looked at me, confused, 'What for?'

'The truth is, I got here pretty early on. I overheard most of your conversation, but didn't step in. I'm sorry.' I hadn't been sure of what to say, what Aki-chan had said had been true.

'It's okay.' Suzumi said firmly and I raised my head. 'I don't think it would have done us any good if you had made yourself known earlier than you did. Besides,' Her smile turned into a grin, 'it all worked out, right? We're home free!'

With those words, it felt like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders. Her grin was infectious and withing moments, I sported a matching, carefree smile.

'I feel like we should celebrate somehow.' She said lively.

'I agree.'

'Wanna go to your secret hiding spot? The weather is still really nice.'

'Sure, let's go!'

We both sat down against the warm, brick wall of the gym.

'I still don't understand why we have to sprint like maniacs. It makes it so obvious we're up to something.'

I poked her side, 'Don't be such a killjoy, it's all part of the experience.'

We were both silent as we grabbed our water bottles and took a few sips.

'We're totally getting detention for skipping by the way.' She said.

'You might, but not me, miss Furuta loves me! She'll let me get away with it this once.'

'I want to deny that, but she probably will.'

We spend the next half hour like we usually did, joking around and getting into stupid arguments.

'No, we're not naming our schemes.'

'Why not? It'll make it all the more secretive!'

'Because,' She looked me in the eye, 'you are really bad at naming stuff.'

'Am not.' I countered.

'Are too, have you looked at the name of our group chat?'

'Pretty setter and the rest is a beautiful name.'

'Just… no, I overheard you naming volleyball strategies. They were all stupid, like roaring dandelion. Iwaizumi-san thought so too.'

'Hey! It's a pun! A lion roars, so roaring dandiLION. You and Iwa-chan just don't understand my genius.'

The blonde had the audacity to roll her eyes. After that we lapsed into comfortable silence. It lasted maybe five minutes before I opened my mouth to speak.

'Say, there's something I've been meaning to ask…' I said.

Hiyori Pov

I looked at the brunette, 'Why so serious all of a sudden?'

'You said that you had already experienced the wrath of girls…' he hesitated, 'can I ask what you meant by that?'

'You heard that too, huh? You really did get there early.'

'Sorry.'

'Don't be, I already said it's fine.' I shifted a little to get more comfortable, 'I suppose I can tell you what I meant.'

'Are you sure? You don't have to I you don't want to.'

Since he gave the choice, I took a few seconds to think about it. Did I really want to tell him? I didn't know what his reaction would be and that made me kind of nervous.

'Yeah, I'll tell you, I know I can trust you.'

'Thank you.' He replied gratefully.

I sighed deeply and looked up at the sky.

'You know, I've always gotten on better with guys.' I began, 'I just find it easier to get along with them. Last year was no different, after the first day I'd already become friends with these five guys. They were really nice and their kind of humor was right up my alley.'

'You're talking in past tense.'

I chuckled lightly and kept looking up.

'You're so impatient, I'm getting to that.'

'So fast forward a few months. Things were going great for me, I'd just met this second year who was in the same soccer club as one of my first friends, let's name him Tadao. He was a friendly one, really relaxed. I started hanging out with him and his friends more.'

I took another deep breath as memories resurfaced.

'I'd say that was the moment things started going downhill. Since Tadao, his friends and I were spending more time together, I spent less time with the five guys from my class. Now, just like you, Tadao held a special place in the hearts of most girls. So me he hanging out with the heartthrob of the school was not a smart move on my behalf. I should've known it wouldn't go unnoticed.'

'They- the girls started spreading nasty rumors about me. They said I was trying to sleep my way through all the boys in the school. They said that I had ditched my five classmates because I had already gotten what I wanted and was now moving on to my next targets.'

'Since I had been spending less time with them, my classmates believed the rumors. At first, Tadao still hung out with me, but then the bullying started. They drew on my desk, threw my stuff in the garbage and dropped my shoes in the pond.'

A lone tear fell down my cheek.

'Two months after the first rumor spread, I was completely and utterly alone. The boys believed I was a slut and the girls hated me. I dreaded going to school. The physical bullying had lessened, but the loneliness was crushing. When dad said we had to move due to his work, I was relieved. It gave me the motivation to finish the rest of the year. Of course I still had Chi-chan, but we didn't live close enough for us to hang out, so we only talked online. I knew how busy she was as a manager, so I only told her the full extent of the bullying after I moved here. My parents eventually found out about the whole situation. You already know how happy they get when I bring over a friend, that's the reason why.'

'Well, that's the story.' I said. My voice was surprisingly clear. I had thought I'd cry a lot more, but all I felt was relief. I'd only ever told three people about last year, it felt nice to tell someone else.

I turned to look over at Oikawa for the first time since I had started talking, but before I could do that, I was pulled into a bone crushing hug. A few more tears leaked from my eyes as I buried my face into his chest.

'Thank you, I needed that.' I whispered.

We held onto each other for a while longer. When we let go, I could see a wet streak trailing down his cheek.

'Don't cry for me.' I pulled him in for another, short hug.

'I can't help it. I made you go through the exact same thing you tried to escape.'

'No you didn't, you didn't leave me, remember? You stood up for me. I'm always excited to go to school because I know you and the others are here for me.'

'Are you sure? You're not afraid to go to school?'

I smiled brightly at him, 'No, how could I ever fear anything when I've got a handsome devil at my side.'

He chuckled, 'That's true.'

'I'm never wrong.' I countered wittily, 'But if you ever ditch me, I'll take you to hell myself.'

'Don't you worry about that, you better believe you're never getting rid of me.'

I laughed and leaned my head onto his shoulder.

'I wouldn't have it any other way.'

I walked into my room, fresh out of the shower. Not really in the mood to do anything, I flopped onto my bed and stared at the ceiling. So much had happened today. None of it had been bad, but it sure had been exhausting. I spent some time mulling things over. Deciding that that I needed to put my thoughts into words, I grabbed my phone and called Chi-chan. After a few rings, she picked up.

'Hey, Hiyo-chan! What's up?'

'Nothing much really, I just wanted to hear your beautiful voice.'

'Yeah right,' Came the sarcastic reply, 'when have you ever done that? Now for real, what's up?'

I smiled, 'I can't hide anything from you, can I?'

Except for the fact that I'm trying to set you up with your crush behind your back of course.

'Nope, so stop trying.'

I paused for three heartbeats before speaking up again, 'I told Oikawa about last year.'

The conversation fell silent as I waited for my friends' reply.

'Did he find out?'

'Yeah, kinda. I had a small fight with a third year girl, Oikawa was close by so he overheard.'

'Wait, woah, what happened?'

'I was cornered by these three girl, I only know the name of one of them. Her name was Aki. She told me a bunch of stuff and said that she was the one behind the bullying.'

'What did she want from you?'

'She wanted me to stay away from Oikawa. If I did, the bullying would stop.'

'What did you say.' She asked quietly.

'I said no. Before I could say a lot more, Oikawa came to the rescue. He and Aki-san talked for a bit and in the end, she said she'd stop everyone's advances.'

'You're leaving out a lot of details.'

'Yeah, sorry. It got kind of personal for them, so I just don't feel like it's my place to tell.'

'I see, it's okay then. She didn't hurt you, did she.'

I laughed at the threatening tone, 'No mom, I'm fine.'

I could basically feel her mood shift through the phone and sure enough, her next sentence was a lot more happy.

'This is great news! I'm so happy it's all been resolved.'

'Me too! I really didn't need a repeat of last year.'

'You don't have to worry about that, you'll never get rid of me.' She said cheerfully.

'You know, Oikawa said the exact same thing.' I said mirthfully.

We both giggled.

'I've noticed something.' Chi-chan said, 'You've been calling him Oikawa, why's that?'

'Oh, you see, he wanted to give me a nickname. In the end, he decided on 'Suzumi', since all the other nicknames were not 'special enough'. His words not mine. Since he gets to call me that, I asked if I could call him Oikawa and he agreed. So here we are.'

'My,' she said teasingly, 'you must really like him.'

'I do.' I told her.

'Hiyori? Can you come down for a second?' Mom yelled from downstairs.

'I gotta go, mom's calling me.' I said, rolling off the bed.

'Alright, good luck. Sweet dreams!'

'You too Chi-chan! Thanks for listening to me, I really appreciate it.'

'Anytime.'

I fell back onto the bed, this time face first. Mom had asked me to help fold the laundry. I sighed into my pillow as I recalled our conversation.

'Hey mom?' I asked while I folded one of my tie-dye shirts.

'Yes sweetheart?'

'Say if, hypothetically, someone asked me if I liked someone and I reply with yes, but I meant platonically… do you think they'd pick up on that?'

'Did you say you meant it as platonic love in that hypothetical situation of yours?' She asked with her usual knowing smile.

'Well, I didn't really say that specifically.'

My mom looked at me with a face that told me all I needed to know. Chi-chan definitely thought I liked Oikawa now. There was no way I could easily reverse this, she would just brush it off as me being shy. I sighed again, this time in acceptance.

Oh well, surely this wouldn't come to bite me in the butt… right?

All done! I know it's been a lot of Hiyori's pov, but I'll switch it up next chapter. Speaking of next chapter, I will not be uploading on the sixteenth. I've got a test week coming up and I really need to focus on that. The next upload will hopefully be on the twenty-fourth. Sorry about that, I'll be sure to make it real interesting to make up for it. I've got a basic idea of what it's going to look like, so please look forward to it~

Here's the name of the next chapter: Oh yeah, this is big brain time

Also, a big thank you to my dearest guest reviewer. I really appreciate your kind words. :)
