Claudia had been writing letters for quite some time when she heard a knock on the door. She glanced at her watch and wondered if it could be Hawkeye. Her suspicion was confirmed when she heard his singy-songy voice.
"The doctor's here."
A smile appeared on Claudia's face as she went to unlock the door and opened it for him. Hawkeye walked in quickly and close the door behind him.
"Well hello, doctor. I have been waiting for you."
Hawkeye leaned forward and pressed a quick kiss on her forehead.
"So what seems to be the problem, ma'am?"
"I have been very lonely, doctor." Claudia said with a flirty wink that just about melted Hawkeye's heart.
"I know just the cure for that, milady." He pulled her into a tight hug, locking his lips with hers. Loving how her body responded to his touch, he put his hand on her behind and pressed her roughly against him. She must have been surprised, judging by the squeak that escaped her lips, but a long satisfied sigh followed right afterwards. He kept kissing her vigorously, enjoying the enthusiasm that radiated from her.
"That was a nice hello." Claudia purred when their lips separated. Still contently clinging to Hawkeye's body, she laid her head on his chest and listened to the fast beating of his heart. "How was your shift?"
"Also very lonely." Hawkeye said, caressing Claudia's hair.
"Let's go, then." Claudia extended her arm to reach her jacket and put it on.
"Or we can stay here and play doctor…" Hawkeye suggested, putting his arms around Claudia again and bringing her closer.
"I have to be at Colonel Potter's office in a forty five minutes." Claudia objected with a stern tone but continued more playfully. "Also you need to eat something, mister!" Getting on her toes, she kissed his forehead and walked out the door.
"Wait for me, Claudia!" Hawkeye shouted and run out of the tent to catch up with her. It was pretty easy, since she wasn't walking too fast. He placed his arm around her shoulders and squeezed her tight. Feeling her up was the only thing that felt right lately, everything else felt a little off.
"So what inedible arrangement have you prepared today, Igor?" Hawkeye handed Claudia a tray and then got one for himself. "So how do you see it today, milady?" He turned to Claudia who was carefully studying today's offer. "You are looking at it like you haven't seen it million times already."
"Well, it looks like someone had eaten it already, too. Jeez, is there something that is just a little bit appealing?"
"If you want appealing, look at me, not the food!" Hawkeye's tone made it like the most obvious thing in the world.
Claudia rewarded him with a nice smile, then turned back to the supposed nourishment. "Well, let's bite the bullet. I chose the meatloaf with potatoes and whatever that green thing is."
"Would probably be safer to bite an actual bullet…" Hawkeye noted, pointing at his choice of meal and then watching it land on the tray.
"Hello, kids!" Colonel Potter greeted them, drinking another cup of coffee. The only other person at the table was Radar, who nodded to them in acknowledgement. His mouth was full and he was busy trying to chew the leathery food.
"Hello, father!" Claudia answered, making Hawkeye shake with hysterical laughter.
"I have such bad-behaved children!" Colonel Potter sighed and turned his attention to the meatloaf.
"What have I done?" Hawkeye protested loudly.
"So many things, Hawkeye …"
Hawkeye didn't answer, just shrugged and carried on eating quietly. Between his bites, he was watching Claudia converse with her colleagues. When they were kissing before, he just wanted to scoop her in his arms and run with her all the way to Maine to escape this shell of a life in Korea. And it just bewildered him.
The Colonels were talking about the military operations that happened while the sniper was shooting at 4077. Apparently, the area was hit so hard, their side would have had trouble to transport the wounded to their unit.
"So there had been survivors. Good… That's good." Claudia said, alluding to the previous conversation she had with the colonel. Hawkeye did not really partake in the chat, so he didn't mind he didn't follow and just kept staring at Claudia.
The horrible weather made air transport between the Korean peninsula and Japan almost impossible. One of the nearby MASH units were dealing with an outbreak of hemorrhagic fever and the others were pretty full due to the intense fighting. So since 4077 was relatively calm in contrast to others, they were told to prepare for a long stretch.
The first wave of wounded were Marines, and as usual they were awfully young. Hawkeye commented on this fact numerous times. One of these youngsters, Timothy Burke, had a nasty head wound and not as bad, but still pretty serious belly wound. Claudia and Hawkeye worked on him together, Hawkeye handling the belly full of shrapnel. The aid station personnel had done great job in dealing with the head wound, so Claudia was done sooner and went on to another patient.
Major Burns was very agitated by Hawkeye's attitude, which was nothing new, but as the day continued, the rows were getting more frequent and harsher. A few times even Colonel Potter intervened, sending one of the men to take a five a bit prematurely. With no end in sight, they were taking short breaks every two hours or so. The headquarters didn't lie when they promised a lot of injured.
In the end they spent close to twenty hours in the OR, well, everyone except for Frank, who overslept and therefore was punished with the following night shift. Claudia and Hawkeye said good night to each other in the scrub room, and both hurried to their respective tents. It was an exhausting day. Claudia still managed to take a quick shower, but Hawkeye just entered the Swamp tent and fell asleep right after his face hit the pillow.
The camp went dead silent after the OR session ended. Klinger walked back and forth, sporting a green skirt while on guard and the occasional person strolled between their bed and the latrine. But no one was as memorable as Hawkeye mimed playing basketball. It stroke the corporal as odd, but the captain always came up with new pranks and weird ways to relax, so he wasn't that worried until they talked over breakfast.
